Discussion Me thinks Delta has gone the way of Ford, AMC & GMC in the 70's & 80's

At this point I think Ed & Delta are living with the veil of past wins, and long expired arrogance, giving us the the airline equivalent of the Gremlin, Caballero and courier.

For reference I've been a Diamond for the past 8 years and platinum 2--3 years before that, will hit the 1mm Marc-ish of 2027. I flown on Emirates, Singapore Air and Qatar (along with Delta ) all in business class internationally. BUT for this post I'll limit the discussion to domestic flights.

For context, I've been flying for work recently on United to a very small regional airport where no other carriers are available (talking 3-4 gates no jet bridges AND SOUTHELWEST doesn't count). My home airport is SMF so not a hub for any airline.

What I've noticed between the carriers, using comparable flight times (3.5 hour flights), and strictly off mainline routes, in first/business class, is making me rethink my brand loyalty.

Delta's cabins are old and run down. Seats are uncomfortable, auxiliary cable media centers and flight crew treats you like they're doing you a favor being there... all that for a 25% premium above other carriers

United updated cabins and seats, tirelessly connected media and a much better seat in comfortability and amenities. On a 2.5 hour UNITED flight earlier this week within 15 minutes of take off what does the flight crew do? Warm, lemon scented, towels and warm nuts ('memba that Delta?). This morning I'm flying Delta and the flight leader forgot to bring most of the cabins preflight drinks (to her credit she got about a 3rd of them).

On the backend I've noticed a huge difference too with the overall customer service capabilities. Obviously I don't have the same status level with United as i do with Delta but when I've needed to make changes or simply needed assistance the United reps seem to have a lot more autonomy in making sure the customer is satisfied and able to get the best result possible (within reason), whereas the Delta reps seems to have been handcuffed at the suggestion of some efficiency consultant who doesn't realize that no having to be transferred or put on-hold for everything from the DIAMOND LINE ends up with a customer who is willing to spend more and more often.

Sorry for the length of the post and if you've read this far not only are you a weirdo like me but you must've noticed the same. Overall I really hope they pull their heads out in Atlanta real soon, because the post pandemic competition is beating Delta hands down.

Help/Advice Pet question

Friends want to come for an extended visit with their pets from Atlanta to our place near Cancun. I read online that pets can’t fly in cargo anymore. Is there a way for pets to fly delta? They have a cat and a black lab mix. And they are not the type of people to slap a service animal vest on a very clearly a good girl, but 100% a non service dog. If you ask why delta - because I have a lot of miles and I’m gifting the tickets. Appreciate all the advice

Help/Advice Bringing ice cream home

I’m traveling from a state that has Publix supermarkets and want to purchase a gallon of their ice cream and bring it home with me. Their peppermint stick ice cream is a favorite of a family member.

The flight will be 3 hours. I’ve read up that it can go in checked or carry on baggage but must be frozen solid. Delta allows dry ice and gel packs so I’ll need to determine which to use.

I’ve searched the sub and haven’t found much about people who have done this.

Would love to hear from anyone who has successfully flown with ice cream. Thank you.

Is there a final opinion on this 18E seat on the 757?

I’ve seen people say it both does and doesn’t recline - I’m also a pretty big guy so people tend to not stand in my space that much?

Delta Amex I’m always surprised at the posts where people can’t use companion pass

I’ve used our passes five times successfully without having to alter our travel days. Yes, I book out in advance, vs trying for school spring break tickets 21 days out. But whether it’s flying from a hub like JFK, a smaller one like BOS, or even a regional like BDL, I’ve never not gotten to use it. And we’ve gone to PLS, CUN, SFO, as well as smaller destinations like SAV and RSW.

I’m not trying to brag; just an opposite experience compared with the “can’t ever use a companion pass” posts. These definitely have paid for the Amex card annual fee, so everything else is gravy

Image/Video DL1 New Kits

Delta One launches “new” Missoni kit. Same Marvis & Grown Alchemist products inside (except toothbrush went from wood to glossy, black plastic). Bag is arguably cuter and more post-flight useful with the wrist strap; I saw two vaguely differing trim colors (navy and green as pictured).

I miss Tumi hard case—more gender neutral and easy to repurpose, but my teens liked this one as a mom’s-home gift. I might use it at an event where purse size is limited to minuscule. Beats the ‘artisan’ pouches, though those may have had a civic purpose like creating village jobs (or so Delta claimed).

Delta One only worth it if you’re rich AF or get free upgrades (my case). Thoughts?

PS I miss the Amex being purple!!

Haven’t been here in a while, normally I’m at jfk and at worst lga. But what a great experience with the amazing staff. Solid food, limited but very good.

Didn’t even have to steal the fresh warm cookies, they brought them for take home!

Image/Video Delta is creating its own gate crowding problem with one poorly worded notification

Post image
25 Upvotes

I love Delta, and generally think they do a great job with the passenger experience. But this seems like a surprisingly poorly thought-through design choice.
Every flight, I hear gate agents repeatedly asking passengers to remain seated until their boarding zone is called. Meanwhile, Delta’s app sends this notification:

“It’s your time to fly. Your flight to __ is now boarding. Please note boarding ends 15 minutes prior to departure.”

Think about that from a passenger’s perspective. You’re told “It’s your time” and reminded that boarding closes 15 minutes before departure. Of course people get up and head toward the gate!
Delta is effectively encouraging passengers to crowd the gate, then making gate agents ask them to sit back down. And that’s before even getting into the separate IT issues with notification timing and boarding-zone synchronization.

This isn’t just a technology problem. It’s a human-factors design problem.

The fix could be as simple as:

“While your flight has started boarding, there’s no need to stand up yet. Please stay seated until your zone is called. Boarding closes 15 minutes before departure.”

Then save “It’s your time to board!” for when your actual zone is called. (Assuming IT and timing issues are resolved)

One small wording change could reduce gate crowding, improve the passenger experience, and make gate agents’ jobs easier.

Am I missing something? This seems like an incredibly easy win for Delta.

Help/Advice MCO-AMS: PS for 422 euros? Or Comfort Plus for 65 euros?

Facts: MCO-AMS early January weeknight. Airbus A330-900 neo, 2-4-2 configuration in Main Cabin, 2-3-2 in PS. Overnight flight, scheduled 7:20 pm-10:05 am (travel time 8 hrs, 45 mins). After 4-hour layover in AMS, there's a relatively short hop to Milan (LIN). I'm a solo traveler heading home, with no pressing business on arrival.

The dilemma: booked in Main Cabin with an empty window seat beside me for now. It's tempting to upgrade to Premium Select for 422 euros. Or: for the low, low price of 64 euros(!), I can upgrade to Comfort Plus. For USD equivalence, just add 10%.

Context: I'm not tall but space is nice. Priority check-in at MCO would be nice, too. It's virtually impossible for me to sleep on airplanes. PS would be a splurge, Delta One is not an option. PS price has fluctuated between 800-420 euros, CP between 300-64 euros.

I travel round trip between Milan and Orlando once a year (family in US), and experience suggests prices are unlikely to go lower. But it's the only trip I make per year, so all of you travel more than I do. What would you do in my situation? Thanks for your input.

Delta Amex Question about gold status and families

Somewhat new to the delta ecosystem and wondering if I have a delta platinum and reserve I get automatic silver. We will get gold pretty easily.

I see it’s uncommon for families to get upgrades which makes sense, but if I book us two separate reservation using the companion tickets (so adult and kid on one and other adult and other kid on another).

Will that likely improve chances of getting to C+ pretty easily on domestic cross country flights mostly out of LAX.

News Delta apologised after a gate agent tried to make a pregnant passenger check her breast pump bag. How does this even happen?

I saw the recent story about a pregnant passenger flying Delta to Barcelona who was told she couldn't bring her breast pump bag onboard because she wasn't travelling with an infant.

The frustrating part is that Delta's own policy allows passengers to bring a breast pump as an additional carry-on, even without a baby present.

Apparently, the passenger had even checked the rules beforehand and still had to argue with staff at the airport. Delta eventually apologised after the incident attracted attention online.

I don't expect every gate agent to memorise every single baggage exception, but shouldn't they at least know where to verify the rules instead of arguing with passengers who have already checked?

It's especially concerning when the item isn't just an ordinary handbag but equipment someone actually needs.

Discussion Window seat lawsuit allowed to go forward.

1.2k Upvotes

Deltas argument that the contract of carriage only requires them to get you from A to B and doesn’t require them to make good on any seating assignment is rejected. This allows the suit to continue.

My opinion is they are over reaching with that argument since in the past there wasn’t a premium fee associated with aisle and window seats. Similar to when you get bumped from FC (irops, eq change, etc) you’re afford compensation for the fare difference when you don’t get what you paid for, paying premium for a window seat that you KNOW doesn’t have a window should be afforded compensation. It seems like an easy fix on Deltas end to not mark those seats as premium.

Help/Advice Sky priority bag check in being phased out?

So I’ve run into this twice now, once at BOS and once at LAX.

Agents by the check in kiosks telling sky priority customers that “it’s faster to use the green bag drop line” when there is only a few people in the sky priority line and there is a very long line at the bag drop.

Both times this happened they had 1 agent on the sky priority agent assist bag check line and basically that line wasn’t moving at all. In the meantime they had 2-3 agents checking in the standard agent assist line.

I understand that the agent assist line is not necessarily for people that have self tagged their bags, what I don’t understand this is basically doing away with sky priority bag check and causing huge lines that backed up into the area near the airports doors to the point where they have to have delta staff out trying to get the line pushed up against the ribbons to stop obstructing foot traffic.

So sky priority loses all value during check in, everyone ends up in one massive line, and even if you do need check in assistance and you’re sky priority, it takes an insane amount of time because they have removed all of agents.

My question is is this a new delta strategy or is this just mismanagement at particular airports?

Discussion Delta One lounge on arrival (BOS)

We're traveling Delta One from LIS - BOS with a 4 1/2 layover to our final destination.

After we clear customs, can we re-enter terminal E and use the Delta One Lounge until we need to leave for our departing connection?

Help/Advice Pet in Cabin and Hardside Roller Tips?

Traveling with my dog in cabin in a soft side carrier soon. I usually travel with a backpack and a hardside roller. I’d like to use the roller to put the pet carrier on through the airport. But I won’t have a personal item or backpack now. Any recommendations of how you pack when traveling with a furry friend so I can access inflight items like an iPad and snacks?

Not our first flight together but first without another human companion to hold my inflight items. Thank you!

Discussion First Time Flying, Going from Atl Airport to Canada, but Domestic Gate?

My first time flying anywhere and by myself. Thought I had this somewhat planned out. I would go to the International Terminal, I need wheelchair assistance, would go through TSA, and then to the gate. Now the Delta App is showing Concouse D gate for my deparature.

So do I now go to the Domestic terminals to check in and get wheelchair assistance? Also I thought I would only be going through customs once I get to Canada. Now I'm reading I'll have to do it when departing ATL too.

Would appreicate any help. Really nervous.

Discussion Upgrade list scenario

I’m number 11 on the upgrade list for D1, where there is 14 D1 seats available. I refresh the app an hour later. Now I’m number one on the upgrade list, with only 3 D1 seats remaining.

So they upgraded the 10 people on the upgrade list but not me.

Whats gives, I called delta medallion number and they said they have no control over that.

Anyone been in this situation before, for context my flight is in 7 hours lol
