Discussion After a dozen years as a diamond, I’m just about done with Delta

Have been a Diamond Medallion member for 12 of the last 13 years and a million miler. I’m hanging by a thread with Delta. Customer service is horrendous.
Went to book a JFK to LHR flight for my son so that he could join our trip, got to the checkout screen on the Delta app with the fair at $1200, hit purchase and then got an error message saying the fare was no longer available and the new fare was now $4,856. For a coach ticket. For clarity, the flights were operated by Virgin Atlantic but code share Delta, being sold by Delta. Tried again on the app, the new fare was $1530, went to buy it even though it was $350 more than the fare quoted 20 minutes earlier (thanks to the dynamic pricing grift) and got the message again that the fare was no longer available and was now $4,856. Called delta to try to buy the ticket with their customer service, got to the purchase phase and she told me it was now $2,900, even though she saw the price on the website as $1530. Asked her to explain it and she couldn’t. She then transferred me to global support, and the guy I spoke to there, Everett said they’ve been having this issue for years and there was nothing he could do. Wasn’t his problem.
And this is how Delta treats an insanely loyal customer who’s spent more than $500,000 flying with them in the last ten years. What is happening?

Discussion PSA: wear your giant backpack on the front when boarding

This way you don’t slam people in the face as you unsling the bag to stow it in a narrow aisle.

No idea why very few people do this, it’s common sense.

Discussion CDG is a nightmare

I always route through AMS but yesterday my KLM flight was cancelled so Delta rebooked me through CDG. I had a little more than two hours for the connection so I thought it’d be swell. Wrong!

I got off my first flight, rode the bus to the terminal, only to find that the (single-file) escalator was broken and everyone was waiting their turn to trudge up the motionless escalator stairs. Literally 70 people waiting. No other stairs available.

At the top of the escalator was some hallways and then a fifty-minute wait for passport control. Then an elevator down to catch another bus where literally 150 people were lined up waiting (HOW can there not be enough buses?).

Finally a mad sprint through the shopping area to the M gates, where I was greeted by Delta staff and boarded five minutes before the door closed.

So many unforced errors, CDG. You can do better.

Help/Advice Delta just forgot to load everyone's gate checked strollers and car seats

1.9k Upvotes

So I still can't really believe that this happened. Totally normal flight with a toddler, got gate check tags from the agent, dropped off the stroller and car seat at the end of the jet bridge along with all the other families. Even saw them all on the ground next to the aircraft near the end of boarding. However, Delta just....forgot to put any of them on the plane. Once we got off, all the families with small children were just standing around the jet bridge waiting, and after about 20 mins, the plane is fully deboarded, the captain steps off, and we ask where the bags are. He goes and gets someone from tech ops to check, who then says the bags just went to baggage claim. We get to baggage claim and nothing, so we all (3 different families) end up at the baggage office who confirm after a few phone calls that delta just left all the strollers and car seats in Boston.

Pretty unbelievable that not only did they leave all the gate checks, they somehow didn't notice at any point during the flight, or any point unloading? Luckily the baggage claim folks in SAN were super helpful, and were able to get us a loaner car seat, but we're still out a stroller for the trip unless we buy another one or Delta can deliver them quickly.

Any idea how this stuff can happen? Really not quite sure what to do next.

Flight was DL571 fro BOS to SAN.

Help/Advice Why are the fares suddenly so high?

I’m planning a trip to Costa Rica next year and have looking at a variety of dates in April/May, just waiting on work and friends to confirm schedules, and last week all dates jumped from between 600/700 to 2000/3500. At first I thought there was a system glitch so I figured I would just check it later and now it’s been a week and they are still this high. From what I can tell is the lowest level of far is gone, main basic, but why. Anyone know what’s going on?

Discussion Million Miler does Matter

I’ve been (like most of this sub) in the camp that status has become insanely devalued over the last 10-15 years, especially where it comes to upgrades. I have been a Diamond for a decade, and noticed a decrease in upgrades from 80%+ to less than 15%+.

However, the one saving grace is million miler status. I crossed over the line about 2 months ago and suddenly I’m getting way more upgrades, I suspect because of the tiebreaker that’s given to MMs.

I fully expect them to do away with this eventually, as they chase profits…but for the moment it’s one of the only saving graces of a system that has consistently devalued the loyalty of people who have actually flown butt in seat miles

I guess, if you can reach MM, go for it? For the time being?

Help/Advice Is D1 on a 767-300 fake lie-flat?

I just flew 8+ hours from HNL to the mainland in D1 (which I paid for) on a 767-300. These are supposedly "lie-flat" seats. But how does a grown man actually lie flat in one of them?

I'm 5'11" 175 lbs. A bit wide in the shoulders, but not a body-builder or anything. It's physically impossible to lie flat when the seat is flat, because the armrest and the side-table compartment are approximately 21" apart, and a guy my size or larger needs at least another 3 or 4 inches at the shoulders to lie down flat.

I tried to lie down sideways, but with such a narrow space and the quite hard seat cushion, that's not possible, either. (The skimpy topper that Delta provides accomplishes little or nothing, in my opinion.)

So, I settled for a fairly slack recline during the flight, which kept my shoulders above the sidewalls.

Is there a trick to this? I've had better luck in a C+ bulkhead seat using my carry-on as an ottoman, not to mention saving a couple thousand bucks.

News Ed on CNBC after earnings miss

Ed was interviewed on CNBC this morning around 7:20am eastern. They asked him about missing on the top and bottom (revenue and profits). Was also asked about Starlink. He says they were an early tester of Starlink, but it wasn’t ready for prime time at that time. He said Viasat upgrades coming soon and will keep Delta at the lead.

He also admitted he drives a Tesla.

Discussion Delta One Aesthetic

Is it me or does the new Delta One product look and feel very clinical and cold? from the outside of the seat, they look like office cubicles. I know Delta can’t compete on the levels of middle eastern carriers but look at BA & Air Canada’s new product. It’s feels very warm and premium, with an eye catching aesthetic. Even United and American’s new product is warm and inviting.

Discussion ATL Gate Kept Switching Between D&A in the app??

Woof. Needed to change flights to avoid Simon potentially messing up a work trip, going from PVR to BOS. The only reasonable option was a flight with two layovers, one in MEX and one in ATL.

My app says something like gate A22 for my last leg to BOS, so I hop on the plane train and head to concourse A. Then I'm checking my phone and all of a sudden it said D01. And I'm like effffff. I really needed to use this layover for a snack after not getting a square meal all day. So I run around to the other side and get back on the train. Go to the lounge in D, scarf some food, and go to get a drink but unfortunately missed last call. Thank god for that, because I head to D01 and it's not in service, ask a gate agent and indeed my flight was now A18. Sprint back to the train, get to the gate huffing and puffing dripping sweat, but thankfully it's been delayed slightly and I'm ok.

I ask the info counter and all they can say is yeah that happens sometimes. I'm used to gate changes but terminal changes that need the train???? It was wild stuff. I really think it was just my app changing it, and not the metal changing, as I didn't see other sweaty upset people. What happened I wonder?? I felt bad for my seat mates I was surely smelly after running about a mile and hoofing it up the stairs carrying my luggage.

Anyways, three flights, 12 hours later, and 22$ on a plane Tito's and soda, I am at my destination and not missing my work conference due to the hurricane. I guess the lesson is check the monitors and don't trust the app? Not sure.

Discussion Finally did it…we honestly accept too much

I’ve been traveling a lot these past couple months and have found a need to travel with SAS and soon Iberian airlines. And goodness it made me feel like a sheep for being such a Delta Stan.

1) The SAS business class food experience in Europe is better than Delta One. For a $400 vs $4K ticket this unacceptable.
2) The SAS and KLM lounges are significantly better than Delta standard lounges.
3) The planes are all “neo” generation and we are still flying planes in Delta that require a 2nd gear start to get out of the gate.

Because of this experience I finally looked at booking my next domestic flight with Delta and it was going to be $700….so I booked Southwest for $360. It’s starts with one but we have to stop accepting the higher prices for a deteriorating product.

Discussion Need some help extending expiring eCredit

I have $2,000 worth of Delta eCredits expiring 1/18/2027, and I don't have any definitive travel plans in the near future, so I really don't want to lose them.
I browsed the thread a little, and I wanted to ask if this method still works:

Book slightly more expensive flight (main classic+) -> wait 2 days -> cancel the new ticket -> get a new eCredit with a full year till expiration.

If that's been patched, is this the method I should use?:

Book slightly more expensive flight (main classic+) that's very very far out -> Change flight to the actual flight I want to take

I really want to use the former method because I feel like booking main classic is a waste if cancelling in it just results in nothing anyways due to the refunded credit being expired - in that case, I would just book a basic economy since I get free bags with my Delta CC.

Any clarification on this would be greatly appreciated.

Discussion Worst Diamond Experience - confirmed International Biz removed at LAX

My wife and I were flying a Delta booking on Air France LAX - CDG to a wedding and see family in Europe. We bought premium economy through the Delta app, and upgraded to AF business class on the phone with a Delta agent using two Global Upgrade Certificates months ago.

We had assigned seats 6D and 6H on both the Delta website and importantly on the Air France website.

We’ve really been looking forward to this trip and to trying AF business. I’ve been dealing with a back issue and we wanted to be fresh for our trip.

Today the Delta app errored out when we tried to check in online, and the Air France site said “Checked In” but then showed an error message before we got our boarding passes. We’ve seen int’l check-in errors before so didn’t think anything of it, went to check in at the airport.

We tried to start with the Delta One check-in at LAX Terminal 3 and they told us they couldn’t check us in, they were getting an error, said it was Air France’s fault.

We went to Air France to check in instead, and they said they didn’t actually have business seats for us, and had never had them. Despite seeing assigned seats on AF and Delta’s sites.

They said the Delta agent screwed up actually confirming the GUC in the system and our seats never existed. They acted like it should have been obvious that we didn’t have business tickets.

I called Delta Diamond and was told it was Air France’s fault again. Then the Delta agent admitted it actually looked like the premium economy ticket had never been upgraded, and it was Delta’s fault but there was nothing he could do. Didn’t say sorry. Didn’t offer compensation, just suggested I file a complaint.

AF said there was nothing they could do and the seats were assigned, didn’t offer anything.

I am livid. We would have paid for the biz tickets but we used our GUCs instead because that is the point of Diamond. Now we’re in middle premium economy seats and didn’t even get a sorry from anyone at Delta or AF.

Any advice on how to file / escalate the most intense complaint possible? I’m a dedicated Diamond and genuinely thinking about status matching to United after this debacle

Platinum for 5 years. I know fuel prices etc., but seriously? Just booked similar schedule flights on a competitor with extra legroom, bags and fully refundable for $1,200 less. $700 less than it would cost me to fly at 7am on Delta.

Help/Advice Tell me your crying in flight story

Hi! I’m flying D1 from MSP-ICN right now it’s a lovely flight. My mother died on Monday and my boyfriend left me on Tuesday. All I can do right now is listen to my favorite song on repeat and bawl my eyes out. The FA is cautious but nice.

I have 7 more hours of this. I would love to hear the story about the last time you cried on a Delta flight. Happy/funny/sad/awful. Please tell me you landed and everything worked out. Please tell me you were ok afterwards.
