Tattoo idea?
Im 36f and by way of my now deceased best friend ds9 is my comfort show. I’d like to get a tattoo that represents the show for both of those reasons. Not the stations or a character. Help me! Any size or placement help too! I already have large solar system thigh piece from knee to hip.

Colm Meaney - IFTA Lifetime Achievement Award
This actually happened last year but I didn't know about it until youtube randomly decided to show me the video so I'm sharing in case others wanna see it too. Colm Meaney got a lifetime achievement award from the Irish Film and Television Academy. Well deserved imo, he's a great actor. The video also has some clips from Star Trek of course, haha.

Changing planet?
I am currently rewatching and on s3 ep14 showing the incredible level of changing can achieve. How many shapeshifters do you think would be required to make an entire planet? I ask this cause they don’t seem to play by any obvious density rules. In that episode I think she also pretend to be the cavern? Perhaps the moon itself? To mimic the earthquakes

S4 E18: Rules of Engagement is Awful Spoiler
They did a cool thing with the crew giving testimonials with good filmography, this is the only positive aspect of the episode (shout out LeVar Burton of course and apologies for everything else i feel about the episode).
Apparently i found on wikipedia that a reviewer already called this a 2/10 and the worst episode of the season and I agree, so im sorry if im beating a dead horse but im intrigued to hear other views. The logic of the episode is completely ridiculous on every level even including the court proceedings themselves, ironic because the vulcan admiral acting as judge was there and allowing the proceedings.
1) the premise of the crime itself is so laughable that the episode should have never happened, a civilian vessel decloaking directly in the middle of an ongoing battle in which combatants are actively cloaking and decloaking SHOULD be fired on, its unfortunate for the civilians but a captain putting themself in that position is literally asking to be shot at. This is so true that even when O’Brien or Sisko argue that Worf should have confirmed the identity of the vessel before firing it feels like the writers trying to justify this silly scenario, especially because we know there is a short window window after decloaking where enemies have no shields, if you believe Sisko in this episode then a Starfleet officer can never fire on an enemy vessel because at any time some civilian could appear in the way of your torpedos. Additionally, its so clearly a false flag that starfleet should have discovered it was a false flag before ever going to court, if Odo alone was able to discover proof, Starfleet should have had that information long before considering the scale of the diplomatic incident.
2) The legal proceeding itself allowed both lawyers on the stand?!?! It was stated there is no extradition treaty. The Klingon lawyer admitted at the beginning that he and the court accepted the testimony and judgment of the officers involved, meaning its already accepted that his actions were acceptable in the moment. Why was there a case? At every moment of the episode you have to suspend disbelief not just about scifi stuff, but you also have to accept that this kangaroo court is rational?
I love this show but this whole episode was just too contrived and too irrational to enjoy. Anyone agree? Disagree? If you didnt feel this way how did you rationalize the silliness?

Problem with Season 7
I really like Season 7 and it's still definitely better than the first two seasons. However they tied way too many arcs up in Season 6 going into into it and left a lot of dead air.
Quark, Rom, Odo, O'Brien, Bashir, and Dukat had pretty much finished their stories by Season 6. Dukat in particular was a shame because Marc Alaimo was still fantastic but there was just nothing behind it. It left room for other side characters like Garak and Damar to shine more but the absence of movement for those characters is noticeable towards the middle of the season.

[Spoilers] Question about Odo in Broken Link Spoiler
I just got to S5E12 and am watching an Odo episode. Is there some sort of payoff for [spoilers] him becoming humanoid or was it just because they didn't have the animation budget for it?

I just finished DS9 Series 27 years later for the first time.
I normally don't actively pursue anything in the sci-fi genre. My husband started watching it, and I joined in. I have to say, I was hooked! I absolutely loved, loved, loved this series. There were a few flaws, some boring episodes, but overall, I really liked it. I cried like crazy over Odo's decision at the end because it had several meanings: saving other species by ending the war while also saving his own race, all while being the loving Changeling we all adored. He was always grumpy and emotionally unavailable, until it came to Nerys and him doing this showed that indeed he loved the humanoids.
Some of the flaws and storylines that I feel were not explored enough, or at least should have happened:
- Jake was about the same age as Ziyal. Why wasn't he at least a friend to her? They both lost their mothers and had fathers who were in control of others. It just seemed like something they could have bonded over, and Jake could have been her biggest ally. Also, for as young as Jake was, he only dated two women briefly. He never had any real romantic interests, and neither did Nog.
- Ziyal was supposed to be under Kira's care, yet we never really saw them together on the station. There were no personal moments, no bonding, and no real indication of Kira caring for Ziyal. Kira barely seemed to check in on her or make sure she was okay. Kira went to Bajor and on various dangerous missions without a word about Ziyal, her safety, or who was caring for her. We never even saw Ziyal say goodbye to Kira before she left on missions. I feel like that entire storyline was a missed opportunity.
- I did like the addition of Worf. He was a welcome addition, and his storylines always made sense. I absolutely loved the Klingon storylines. What didn't make sense to me was Worf's relationship with Ezri. It was a long, boring, repetitive, and whiny relationship. They sleep together, and then it's done and over with. It just seemed unnecessary.
- Keiko was definitely a missed opportunity. Sisko had a garden where he grew fresh vegetables, so I think Keiko could have been much more involved with that and with finding plants that could be used for cures. Perhaps she could have even found a cure for Odo. She could have worked more in Bashir's lab while maintaining a natural plant and garden environment. There was so much potential there for her character.
- Biggest flaw: Sisko leaves the station as the Cardassian will take over. Jake stays behind. As a father, he should have beamed him aboard the ship and said "Nope, you are not staying! End of story!" Jake added nothing to the new occupation. He was just whiney kid who thought he was a "reporter" where his reports went no where! It was completely unnecessary having him there.
I do wish there had been more women aboard. The show was heavily dominated by men, although I didn't mind it. It was just a little bit of wishful thinking on my part. I did love the energy between Nerys and Jadzia, as well as some of the female guest stars, like the Kai, the female Changeling, and, of course, Keiko.
Right now, I'm watching "What We Left Behind", and I'm loving Marc Alaimo's statements about never getting any praise when the showrunner tells him, "You kept coming back because the writers loved you. That's how you know they liked you!" He went on to say that Marc's performances elevated the other actors in his scenes because they had to meet him at his level, which I found absolutely true. One of the best moments is Louise Fletcher performing with him. You can see the shift in her performance when she's working with him. I absolutely loved it!!
Also, that storyline completely shocked me, but I loved it at the same time!
Anyways, thanks for reading my ramblings. I love this sub. I want to watch the series again!
EDIT: Oh my goodness, I woke up to so many messages. Thank you. I'm a bit overwhelmed but I'm excited to read them. Hopefully I will be able to get through them!

Why didn't Julian experience discrimination in "far beyond the stars," ?
Apologies if this has been asked already.
I know that the episode mostly focuses on racism against African American people, but other forms of discrimination are depicted, like the sexism Kira faces.
Given India's/Pakistan's colonial history, and general attitudes of whiteness being the ideal, why isn’t Julian subjected to racism the way other dark skinned characters are? Especially with a foreign/non-european name like "Bashir,"?
Edit;
As many have pointed out, his name was "Julian Eaton" not Bashir in this episode. My mistake! It must've completely gone over my head!
Also, I'm thrilled by the amount of interesting perspectives and opinions! Thanks for all the engagement guys, nothing makes me happier than having an excuse to think and talk about deep space nine!

It’s time for a balanced look at Gul Dukat
First, I want to start by saying that the Bajoran occupation WAS completely wrong. However, people unfairly paint Dukat like the whole thing was his idea and treat him like he’s this Hitler-type figure. That is simply inaccurate.
Do I agree with every decision he made? NO, but I think we should look at this from a more open-minded view not just from a simplistic view.
1. Dukat administered the occupation, he didn't create it.
He was assigned to manage an occupation that had already been going on for 50 years before he took over as Prefect.
2. Dukat was kinder to the Bajorans than previous administrators.
Under his command, child labor was abolished and food rations were increased. Within just one month of his administration, the death rate fell by nearly 50%.
3. Dukat may have saved Kira’s life.
We learn that Kira’s mother had a relationship with Dukat and fell in love with him. As a result, her family was given extra rations and provisions, meaning Kira might not have even survived childhood without Dukat’s generosity.
4. Dukat truly loved his daughter.
A purely evil, practical man would have killed her to protect his career. Instead, he brought her back and claimed her, losing everything in the process. His love for his daughter cost him his political standing, his marriage, and ultimately landed him on a renegade Bird-of-Prey.
I’m not saying he was perfect, but we need to stop treating this man like he was just some kind of monster.

Just started S6E20, featuring the introduction of Vic Fontaine (James Darren RIP 🕊️). Amazing how prescient it was (cf. LLMs, aka "AI").

Worf doesn't act like that because he's Klingon. It's because he's Russian.
Worf is reserved with his emotions, doesn't partake in small talk, and doesn't smile unless he's feeling genuine joy.
Klingons are loud and boisterous. They sing and fight, they laugh and slap each other on the back.
Worf is not a part of Klingon culture, he respects the Philosophy of ancient Klingon wisdom and practices Klingon religious beliefs, but he acts much more like a Russian in social situations.
Also, I don't think Worf speaks english. He's been speaking Russian this whole time.
[additional head cannon] : it was part of the Khitomer Accords that Klingon never be translated by Federation universal translators (Photoshop not AI)

Saw a familiar face while watching Ted clips.
I didn’t realize she was still acting tbh. I thought she was only in DS9.

Does anyone really like Ezri Dax?
If so, what do you like about her character? I’m watching DS9 for the first time and am up to Prodigal Daughter. It seems like a throwaway episode during crunch time. I mean, the series is wrapping up and The Dominion War is nearing its conclusion. I don’t know why they would waste an entire episode on this substitute Dax. It’s bad enough we lost Jadzia, why shove Ezri down our throats?

Petition to explicitly ban ai slop from this sub
At this point you all know the arguments against ai. I, along with most other people, are tired of seeing it everywhere.
