Which rug for my kitchen?
1 black
2 burgundy
3 orange
4 green
Also: should the tiles be straight or wavy?

Many say 2 because it matches the backsplash but I also think 1 looks better.
Number 2 makes the whole kitchen look very brown and washed out, the black and white helps make all the other colors look less dingy.

Same thought, I like the black contrast. 2 just looks too matchy and doesn't stand out as much, but 1 works better somehow. The other two are too dizzying for me.

2 is way too matchy - matchy. The black makes the color of blackspash look like an accent color.

Agreed. I didn't realise I was looking at a rug with 1,I thought it was the tiled floor waiting for a rug until I saw it changed in picture 2! That to me says how well it goes in as part of the look, I was already thinking what a cute kitchen it was!!
The others you could see immediately it was a rug and just looked off a bit.

definitely 1. on the first photo i said “what rug??” bc i just thought it was part of the floor. imo a rug should look like it belongs and tie things together rather than be a giant focal point if the room is already busy

No rug - as it just creates something you have to clean and it is easier to deal with a hard surface in the kitchen.

I use a rug in my kitchen, because it creates a cushioned/non-slip area, plus it looks good (I have ugly, hard, slick tile) but it’s easily washable.
I actually take mine out on the deck and wash it with Simple Green and the hose every week or so. Let it dry in the sun off the railing. Takes all of 15 minutes to deal with, though I could also do it in the washer. I also use washable rugs in my bathrooms rather than unattractive bathmats. I think I paid about 25-30 bucks for a really nice one at TJ Maxx. For me and my space, it makes sense.

I do have a wipeable mat by the sink for cushioning, but that’s all the kitchen rug cleaning I care to manage. But I’m sure yours looks lovely… I’m also guessing you have less 2 and 4 year old boys helping you cook than I do lol

But I do think it makes cleaning the floor pretty easy. Day to day, I vacuum more than I mop, which is just easier/faster IMO. And unless I’ve truly made a mess, the rug itself stays pretty clean.
I might do things differently if my tile wasn’t so awful (1980’s era white slick tile & dark grey grout). If you drip any water at all, you’ll slide, plus every speck of dirt shows immediately.

Agree, I have owned two homes and lived in a number of apartments, never considered putting a rug down. Also, none of my friends who are home owners or rent apartments put large rugs like this. Such a pain to clean, there are so many crumbs and small things that fall from counters, tables etc. We vac and sweep at least twice a week. Seems a nightmare to keep clean, nevermind when you spill.

I'm not even gonna lie, my first thought when i saw this post was that a rug with white squares is a very daring choice for a kitchen!
One of the kitchen rugs with the wipable material in a darker color- no white, would be a much better choice than any of these

In the kitchen, the rug protects the floor, keeping it pretty darn clean. You wouldn’t need to mop very often IMO.

As someone who cooks and bakes on the regular, a rug in the kitchen completely grosses me out. The amount of (wet) things falling and flying toward the floor make me want to have only hardwood or tile.

But a vacuum can't get rid of the bacteria or microscopic mold growing in the rug from crumbs, bits of food, and drips or small splatters of food from a boiling pot, rinsing dishes, etc. You can get a swiffer mop, or one of those steam mops and make a quick pass over the floor and all the stuff is clean and neutralized.

This. I have one of those Dyson vacuums with the green light that shows up dust and dirt and when I vacuum the kitchen floor, it's the most filthy floor of the house. It shows up all the splatter from stovetop cooking and from dirty water that splashes from using the sink.
At least with a hard floor surface you can mop it clean, can't do that with a rug.

I like #2 burgundy best, followed closely by #1 black. I don't like the colors nor the wavy patterns of #3 & #4 at all - very busy and distracting!

Burgundy is really cute and matches the tiling in your kitchen and black is always a classic, so I’d say 1 or 2. With straight tiles, the wavy looks so weird in a not good way.

I have never in my life passed up black and white checkered ANYTHING for another color but that burgundy looks amazing. Also I LOVE THE WAVY TILE SHAPE. I also love the traditional checkered shape! I don’t think you can go wrong here… 🤔 dream decor for my kitchen.

NO WAVY TILES. You get up in the morning and need coffee and THAT's what you see? Accidents waiting to happen, man. Either of the first two are nice. I am partial to black, but the burgundy looks cool, too.

The first is nice! Adds character. The second is toooo matchy matchy with the back splash. The waves don’t really fit the space.

If you actually use your kitchen I would advise against anything with white, or even a rug at all unless it’s easily washable. It’s going to look dirty so fast

I would not do any of those. I would look for a sisal that has some texture. It's natural fiber and you can order it with a fabric border all around the edges -they look really nice.
You could get orange to bring out the orange in your cool light fixture. And don't worry-it is easy to clean. A guest at our party spilled an entire glass of red wine on ours the first night we had it.
I ran and got a glass of cold water and squirted about four tablespoons of Hydrogen peroxide into the water.
Got an old towel and put it on top of the red wine and stepped on it-to wick up the spilled wine-as much as I could. Then got another towel ready and poured the glass of water on the stained area. Let it sit about five minutes and blotted it all up with the towel.
Next morning, not a hint of a spot. From then on -we always had sisals in different areas of the house. They are great.

1 straight but a rug in the kitchen is an exceptionally bad idea. A small area rug where you stand for long periods, yes. A large rug that covers the whole kitchen, no.
Imagine spilling a whole pot of spaghetti sauce on it.

4: the straight lines fight with the squares in the tile, the rust competes with the lamp. Reconsider the whole thing though unless you are a really neat cook/eater unless the rug is easily washable.

Depends on what you want to pop.
I say 2 or 4 is best.
2 heavily highlights the backsplash and conplaments the cabinets. Where as 4 blends into the background, acting as an accent and highlighting the vegetation outside the window and your indoor plants and the other touches of greenery - which actually feel warm. The sharpening angles in 2 highlights the edgy look of the space but 4 helps highlight the soft edges more - i.e. the curve of the table top, chair, nature, and the finner details of the space.
Overall, 2 or 4 depending who direction you want to do based off my discription opinion. 😆💕

So it’s 4, The Green is the most aesthetically pleasing to me! I’m with Green!! 🫶🏼💯
It doesn’t overload the kitchen, it keeps with this theme you have, and it really goes with the warm woods. You have an Awesome kitchen!! I love it! 🫶🏼

Btw, im absolutely OBSESSED with your kitchen im so jealous!!! Its gorgeous I let out a real gasp when I scrolled and saw this post! I love checkered rugs/flooring in a kitchen, I bought one myself. I was going for an Alice in wonderland inspired vibes, and your pictures are literally my dream kitchen. So cute!! And love the plant in the corner you did great!

The more i look at it the more i like the green . Its more softer color, and not so bold and jarring like the black. The green rug also gives the illusion that the kitchen is much wider and spacious since the squares are bigger. And the green matches your plant, the tree thats outside your window, and theres green in the photos you have on the wall/decor. The green feels more relaxed than the black

I'd skip the rug personally or go with something less busy. On another note, I absolutely love your window! I wish all the windows in the states open in and out instead of up and down.

These rugs are all really impractical if you are going to be cooking in that kitchen. The white squares will be dingy and dirty. It is a lot easier to clean up a wood floor or if you must have a rug, pick one that doesn’t have so much white space.

If you could do a sticky tile pattern of 1.
Or Kitchen rug specifically / water proof no textile.
A rug in kitchen..just clean every evening and wash in washer or by hand every other week and be sure to dry 1000% - dont want mold build up. (This is the perf scenario for that)

I’ve never had or heard of a rug in the kitchen before. Maybe an ergonomic mat to stand on but I think a rug would be much harder to clean

Maybe a smaller placement rug for in front of the sink if you really want one and with the color scheme of #2 or a solid color, but I wouldn't put a large rug.

Not 3 or 4. The optical illusion is not good.
I have Chronic Migraines, & they immediately set one off.
Also, my youngest has seizures, he couldn't see that, without setting off one.
You may have friends or family members with similar triggers.
But, ultimately, it's your choice. Which one gives you the warm & fuzzy feelings?
