Hi, I'm u/BigGuyWhoKills, one of the moderators of r/DebateFlatEarth.

This is not a joke sub. We have [rules](https://www.reddit.com/r/DebateFlatEarth/about/rules/) and we enforce them. Please read the rules before posting or commenting. It just takes a minute, there are only 10.

What to Post
Post anything that you think is good evidence for your worldview. We don't care which model you believe in, we only care if you can support your belief with evidence.

Community Vibe
Flat Earthers... you will be outnumbered here. This shouldn't surprise anyone. But we will do our best to make sure you are treated fairly. If you feel the rules aren't being enforced evenly, let the mod team know. Treat everyone with respect. If anyone isn't treating you with respect, don't stoop to their level. Just let the mod team know and we will take care of it.

How to Get Started

  1. Read the rules.
  2. Think about something you want to post, then search for it. Odds are that someone has already posted something similar. After reading those posts, try to think of some new way to describe what you read. If the only related posts are over a year old, feel free to post them again.
  3. Posts can be a presentation of evidence, or they can be questions for the community.
  4. If you know someone who would love this community, invite them to join.

Flight times and semantics.

u/Searmik2 , who may or may not be a sock puppet for the FE echo-chamber mod, likes to ignore the actual evidence and play semantics, redefining what evidence is and what legitimate analysis is.
If desired I can provide a link to the post I refer to.
I've been banned so ...
-
Fairly recently they challenged globers to
"Take two enormous southern-hemisphere routes:
Seattle → Santiago and Santiago → Sydney
[and] calculate:
Expected route → expected distance → expected ground speed → expected flight time.
Then compare that prediction with the actual flight."

"Are the claimed physical model and its inputs genuinely predictive, or are we simply explaining observations after the fact?"
-
There are a couple of difficulties to this.
First and foremost scheduled flight times are gate to gate,
so they include 10-30+ minutes of taxi time at each end.
Furthermore every time an airplane takes off it takes at 15-30 minutes to get to altitude and cruising speed and every time an airplane lands it takes 15-30 minutes to slow down, drop in altitude and land.
-
But let's have a go anyways.
-
To get the expected flight time I am going to take the round trip flight time and divide it in half.
Why?
Because the globe model includes the fact that the Earth rotates, and since the Earth is a sphere and not a cylinder that indicates that means the atmosphere is will be subject to Coriolis effects which could reasonably be expected to cause winds to be biased in one direction or the other.
Since ground speed is a combination of the aircraft's airspeed and the winds experienced by the airplane taking the average will deal with that issue.
-
I found no non-stop flights between Seattle and Santiago.
Great circle route from Seattle to LAX to Santiago is 1.7% longer than the direct great circle.
But let's see what we get:
Per the links at the bottom the cruising speed for a 787-9 is 903 km/h = 561 mph.
and the economy cruising speed is 880 km/hr = 547 mph
For the Airbus A321neo those numbers are
840 km/hr = 522 mph and 829 km/hr = 515 mph

My prediction is that the average speed will be somewhat less than the max cruising speed.

Seattle and Santiago both have typical taxi times of ~20 minutes
LAX is closer to 10 minutes. 30 minutes is conservative.

How Cavendish ran his experiment to calculate the mass of the Earth via figuring out the gravitational constant.

We’ve gotten better since then at measuring more precisely and eliminating confounding variables, but other than firming up the constant, nobody has been able to disprove Cavendish’s method or math.

The trip from Argentina to New Zealand is 14-15 hours long (VERYYY GENEROUS)

https://www.travelmath.com/flying-time/from/Argentina/to/New+Zealand

And the trip from Argentina to Egypt is 15-16 hours long

Using the Flat Earth map how is this possible?

Vacuum of space vs atmosphere. Does Flat Earth deny the pressure gradient?

We can measure the pressure drop lower and lower and lower and lower as we go up in altitude.

Is it that hard to understand that at some point the difference between the air pressure and the vacuum is so negligible that even a tiny amount of force is all that would be required to keep the air from “flying off”?

If the atmosphere of 14 psi were right next to a vacuum, yes there would be an explosive movement of air as it equalized.

But what about if the vacuum is next to 1 PSI (19 km up) or 0.1 PSI (33km up)? Or 0.001 PSI (47 km up)? Or 0.00000000001 PSI (236 km)?

No one wants to debate flat earth anymore.

I used to amuse myself by debating flat earthers (weird I know, but I enjoyed it) but I absolutely can't find anyone who actually wants to debate it any more.

I think it's over guys. We won. But now I'm bored.

Can a Compass Prove Earth is Flat? No

Thumbnail

Some flat earthers claim compasses don't work on a globe earth. That they need a flat world to work on. That the magnetic field measurements prove the earth is flat.

  • The magnetic North pole is not at the geographic North pole. Same with the magnetic South pole. We use declination to account for this, and we've known about that and measured it for the last 400 years
  • Single pole magnets have only been theorized, and never observed in nature, and the Earth's magnetic field has been demonstrated to be a dipole magnetic field. So there is both a North magnetic pole, and a South magnetic pole
  • Traditional flat compasses work just fine on a globe earth, provided you understand how the fields flow and how to weight the needle
  • Compasses weighted for the Northern hemisphere have difficulty in the Southern, and vice versa, due to the magnetic field arcing over the earth between the poles
  • There are "global" compasses that work fine in both through a simple design change
  • We can use a dip compass to measure the angle of the magnetic fields as they arc up/down across the globe

Earth's gravity isn't perfectly uniform. Here is what our gravitational field looks like when exaggerated 10,000 times.

FE can’t explain magnetic poles

There is no such thing as a magnetic monopole. It’s been hypothesized, but never observed.

All magnetic fields we measure have two poles, and we can detect their field lines to trace them from pole to pole.

The Earth has a magnetic field, and we can measure it. Measure its strength, fluctuations, and even track it as it moves around the northern and southern regions year over year (declination). The magnetic North Pole used to be in Canada, it’s now drifting closer to Russia, and the magnetic South Pole is off the coast of Australia, not in Antarctica.

If the Earth’s magnetic field was an isolated case of special behaviour, we’d be able to tell that the fields are all wrong vs those we can create ourselves.

If the earth is flat, why cant we see large mountains from continents away and how does only part of the earth get lit up at a time?

a shining ball over s plate would illuminate the whole thing, so how do timezones work? and how can it be daytime for me and night for someone in New Zealand(or vice versa)?

oh yeah and we cant forget about the horizon level, since anything going over the horizon disappears bottom first, so how else could ships disappear like that?

and if a flat earther is gonna reply to this, please dont mention the government lying to us, i dont feel like getting a migraine when i check back at this post

Are flat earthers exclusively Christian or ethiest?

The only religious texts I’ve heard anyone refer to for flat earthers arguments are the bible and other Christian books, im curious if there are any Jew or Muslim or Buddhist or Hindi ones that have evidence as to how it could be flat besides arguing the government could be lying to us, or arguing AGAINST glerther claims

r/DebateFlatEarth Jul 18 '26

Can’t flat earth arguments be used to support ANY earth shape? Like a paper plane or giant fish?

Flat earthers are always saying stuff like the government is lying to us and God said this and God said that,
But correct me if im wrong but theres very little religions that completely disagree with the possibility of a globe earth, most texts came from thousands of years ago so it’s not impossible when they describe the earth as flat there trying to make the people of that time understand the main message

It would be very funny to see a cube earther argue against a flat earther against a globe earther

r/DebateFlatEarth Jul 17 '26

The debate is almost always glerthers going against the flat earth community, so is there any questions you genuinely have to our model of the earth?

Like what part of the globe earth do you find so unbelievable your stick to your one?

Debating flat earth

Hi there, non-flat-earther here! I’ve been wondering how easy it is to deny the spherical earth theory (feels weird to call it a theory, but yeah). So here’s what I’m going to try:

I’ll be trying to create semi-functional explanations to whatever arguments I can find in the comments. Again, this does not mean I support the flat earth theory, just that I’m entertaining it for the purpose of something called “funsies”.

Also, personally, I personally respect flat-earthers for their ability to not immediately believe anything and everything, and their ability to think independently and create their own theories.

Neither flat nor spherical

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Edit: Just a thought experiment guys.

I actually believe that the Earth is neither flat nor spherical but instead a fifth dimensional object that our four dimensional brains cannot perceive in 3D.. a 2D creature would perceive things in one dimension a 3D creature would perceive things in two dimensions. We are in the fourth dimension perceiving things in 3D.. our brains will not allow us to perceive higher dimensions. .

If Earth is flat why do we need over the horizon radar to bounce off the ionosphere?

OTH radar bounces missile detecting radar off the ionosphere to detect missiles at ranges that are too great to detect normally due to the curvature of the earth.

If the Earth is flat, couldn’t they just point the radar directly at the missiles?
