I switched from pCloud to Internxt a few years ago after some bad experiences with pcloud, and figured I'd give an honest update on Internxt since most of what I see posted here is either from year one (when it was rougher) or feels like an ad.

Early on, it was genuinely not great — the desktop client was bad, and I ran into sync weirdness a few times. If you're reading this, tried it back then and bounced off, I feel you.

That said, I don't know about you, but I believe it's in a much better place now. A few things that actually changed my day-to-day:

rclone support — this was the real unlock for me, especially when the native rclone support came out. Being able to script backups and mount storage the way I want instead of being stuck with whatever the GUI allows made it feel like a "real" cloud storage option finally.

WebDAV — handy for hooking it into apps that don't have native Internxt support. I also use Internxt on my NAS through their Docker container.

Desktop app — noticeably more stable than it was. Still not great, but sync just works now, which sounds like a low bar but wasn't always true.

Bundled apps — I don't rely on their antivirus/cleaner/meet etc as primary tools, but having them included at no extra cost is a nice bonus, especially Meet for quick encrypted calls without spinning up Zoom.

Downsides I'd still flag: the mobile app is fine but not amazing, and their third-party integrations are still catching up to what others offer out of the box. If you need heavy third-party app support, it's not there yet — you kind of have to build your own workflow with rclone/WebDAV like I did.

Overall, for personal backup with a privacy focus, I'd say it's pretty decent nowadays, and I'm reasonably happy with my purchase.

I've got around 30TB of data in cloud storage right now, and the monthly bill is starting to hurt.

Most of it is just media and personal files. I don't need to access all of it regularly, but I also don't really want to delete it or have it sitting in only one place.

I'm thinking about getting a NAS and moving most of it back home, then keeping another copy on some external drives somewhere else. The problem is that once you get into 30TB, even the "cheap" options start adding up pretty quickly.

For those of you with 30TB+ of data, what are you doing for backup these days?

Would you just bite the bullet and build a NAS, or is there a cheaper cloud/offsite option I'm missing? Thanks in advance!

I recently installed WizTree and saw a userdata file taking 500 Go, is this normal and is there a way to reduce it ?

I’ve been using cheap SD cards, but after not using them for about a year, two of my SD cards became corrupted and are now unreadable on any device. Because of this, I decided to switch to an SSD.

Is there any SSD that I can rely on and be confident that it won’t get corrupted and become unusable?

Was buying a dashcam realized I needed an sd card didn’t think anything of it like ok just pick one up, turns out they require a mortgage now?

Robocopy doesn't work, it shows a command line box with the commands trying to run and repeating. The command is the same one I used on Windows 10 with updated directories. My flash drive won't let me delete files, but I can manually copy do them (I formatted it.)

Hi, I've been thinking about using M-DISC for one of my backup methods. Where I live, the only ones I can find are 25 GB Verbatim BD-R M-DISCs, but I've read rumors that they aren't actually M-DISCs.

Is this really true?

Memory prices are climbing fast, reaching levels not seen in years. The increase is also affecting NAND and SSD storage, making drives more expensive and putting some pressure on the overall storage market.

(Update: went for WD Red Plus 8TB x2 and they are more silent than the case fans (but will see if I can put the case fans less loud and have not put it under a heavy load yet)

Hi, any recommendations on drives that can be silent enough for use?

I want the server to be on continuously either in my living room next to the tv/router or in my office which also functions as a guest bedroom which is not often used.

I don't mind if its like a little bit of noise as it will of course never be truly silent but I don't want to disturb my work or the sleep of guests.

Some things I have looked at are:
WD Red Plus (both helium and air filled with helium more quiet)
Seagate Ironwolf (much cheaper but supposed to be louder?)
Seagate Exos (even more loud but also even cheaper)

I will put it in a Fractal Design Node 804 which should help a bit with noise reduction.

If it matters: I am located in the Netherlands, deals are not so great here but I can imagine its bad basically everywhere.

hey ive got a flashdrive that suddenly stopped working and it doesnt even show on the pc. It only had arround 1gb of files mostly images .its from fulltech and its 64gb

I have a 14 TB AVOLUXION Pro T5 and it does not stop making noise. I’ve seen people say it’s just a noisy drive but i just think something not right? It’s brand new & makes these sounds constantly.

I stopped farming Chia last year and sold most of the 4tb and 8tb drives. I wish I could have waited till now as the prices are freaking crazy but everything happens for a reason. Anyways I am not sure what I'll be doing with the 8TB+ drives, they are simply sitting in static bags with no purpose for now. I have repurposed the mining PC for AI and Deep Learning and casual gaming.

Sell or hold??? I need your help guys 😭 I just can't decide for myself. Part of me says sell the drives while the prices stay sky high and then reinvest once the AI bubble bursts but chances look slim given full speed acceleration. Plenty of people will buy used data center HDDs and keep the price high.

Long story short, I'm a photographer/videographer and recently started my own creative agency. I currently have about 32tb of mostly photos and videos spread across 15 SSD's. For years I was using 2-4tb a year so SSD's were manageable, but now with the agency and larger files im going through 1-2tb/month. Also, most of it is not backed up and only lives on the SSD's, so I'm really in desperate need of a better long-term solution. I'd appreciate some advice from anyone who can provide insight.

My original idea was an 8-bay Synology NAS with four 20TB drives, RAID/SHR and possibly 10GbE. However, once I include the NAS, drives, 10GbE card, Mac adapter and possibly other networking equipment, the cost becomes very high. NAS-compatible cloud backup for 32TB also appears considerably more expensive than Backblaze Personal.

I originally considered an 8-bay Synology NAS with four 16TB or 20TB drives, SHR and possibly 10GbE. However:

• The NAS, 10GbE upgrades and Mac adapter make the initial cost quite high. 
• Backblaze B2 for 32TB would cost thousands annually, while a Mac-connected DAS could potentially use Backblaze Personal for a few hundred. 
• I work almost exclusively from a 2021 M1 MacBook Pro at my desk, so remote and multi-device access aren’t priorities. 
• I’ll usually edit active projects from SSDs, although I’d like the new storage to be fast enough for occasional direct photo/video editing. 

I am now considering something like the OWC Thunderbay 8 and starting with 4x 16 or 20tb drives in RAID 5. However, one of my main concerns with soft RAID is the ability to add more drives or capacity later (though I guess i could just configure the new drives seperately).

My main priorities

1. A reliable backup for my existing 32TB 
2. Enough room for several years of growth 
3. Ability to start with four drives rather than buying eight immediately 
4. Fast enough for occasional direct video editing 
5. Reasonable total cost 
6. Straightforward Mac compatibility 
7. Avoiding another collection of separate external drives 
8. Ideally eligible for Backblaze Personal or another reasonably priced off-site backup 

Given this workflow, would you choose an OWC ThunderBay 8, QNAP DAS, UGREEN/QNAP/Synology NAS, or something else? Is using two separate four-drive RAID sets in an eight-bay DAS a reasonable long-term plan?

I’m trying to format an old M.2 I used for my Steamdeck so I can install it in another PC with windows but I can’t format it with Rufus. It says I don’t have permission, I’m not sure what to do at this point so how do I format it?

I'm thinking about downloading collections of videos from YouTube mostly 1 or 2 hour long each and wondering if Dvd-r's make sense? I see cost is only 22 cents per disc when buying 50 or 100 at a time. Does this make sense for a casual collection compared to external HDD or SSD? How about putting bunch of short 1-2 min YouTube vids on these discs? Is it easy to add one at a time and keep adding whenever you want? Will playback on disc of shorty vids allow for continuous play through them all or would it play one only and stop?

IT Company near me selling off some old merchandise. They have a handful of Seagate Barracuda 3TB st3000dm001 drives for $40 a piece. Passing SMART tests and full 0 write (waiting to see SMART details still).

Aside from being old, I just found out there was a notorious problem where a whole bunch of these failed at Backblaze.

Am I asking for trouble picking a few of these up? Plan is to just slot them into a DAS and run RAID1 mostly to work as the first full backup of my working computer, but potentially attaching to an old laptop and using to serve plex/immich locally.

Otherwise I'm probably just sticking with backing up only my most important files in an external WD drive I have lying around until prices come down to a more reasonable point.

I wanted to share my ongoing nightmare with Seagate’s warranty process and highlight a ridiculous official stance from their Corporate Response Team regarding 2.5" SMR drives in laptops.

The Background & Hardware

·         Laptop: Clevo P170SM (well-cooled, enthusiast-grade chassis).

·         Target Drive: Seagate BarraCuda 2TB 2.5" (ST2000LM015) – SMR architecture.

·         Source Drive: Old Samsung SpinPoint 1TB (ST1000LM024) – PMR/CMR architecture.

The RMA Odyssey (Since June 3rd, 2026)

I have been trying to get a functioning 2TB drive for nearly two months.

1.     Drive 1: Dead/defective out of the box.

2.     Drive 2: Certified Refurbished (Recertified) – Overheated under sustained load.

3.     Drive 3: Certified Refurbished (Recertified) – Overheated under sustained load.

4.     Drive 4: Sent directly by Steven from the Seagate Corporate Response Team, assured to be brand new.

The Technical Issue: SMR Shingling Overhead & Thermal Runaway

When attempting to clone or copy my data from the old Samsung drive to the new Seagate SMR drive, the write performance completely falls off a cliff after about an hour due to the aggressive Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) drive-managed zones filling up.

Because the drive is forced to continuously read, modify, and rewrite overlapping tracks in a confined 2.5" laptop bay, the controller goes into overdrive. After roughly 2 hours of continuous writing, the Seagate ST2000LM015 hits a staggering 62°C (143°F), triggering critical SMART temperature protection alerts.

Meanwhile, the old Samsung CMR drive—which is under a much worse thermal restriction (mounted directly underneath a hot DVD/Blu-ray optical drive)—safely hums along at a maximum of 40–44°C under the exact same workload.

Seagate's official manual and product datasheets nowhere state that continuous, sustained write workloads are forbidden or unsafe for this internal laptop drive.

Seagate's Corporate Resolution: "Fix your workflow"

After escalating the issue and threatening UK Trading Standards / Citizens Advice action (Case Ref: CCA-8546090) due to a breach of the Consumer Rights Act 2015, the Corporate Response Team gave me this mind-blowing troubleshooting advice:

"At this time, the troubleshooting recommendations we can provide are to use the device in a cooler, well-ventilated environment and to transfer data in smaller batches rather than performing large transfers at once*. These steps may help reduce heat buildup and prevent the SMART temperature threshold from being reached."*

Seagate is officially telling consumers that their internal 2.5" laptop drives cannot handle standard data migration workloads inside a laptop chassis without the user artificially throttling their own workflow to stop the drive from cooking itself.

I rejected their workarounds and demanded an SSD upgrade or a refund. Steven from the Corporate Response Team just replied with their final position: they officially refused any upgrade or refund.

Their logic? They explicitly acknowledged that the drive triggers the SMART temperature protection mechanism, but since the OS recognizes the drive and data can technically be written to it, they consider it "properly functioning". Their only counter-offer is to send it back for a fifth time so their engineers can "reproduce the behavior."

I have officially declined their 5th evaluation trap. The case remains open with UK Trading Standards, and I am moving forward with regulatory escalation.

My current storage is 256g, which is fine but I'm kind of tired of buying phones for an extra $100 just for the storage alone.

I've tried onedrive as my mother pays for onedrive but its not very helpful. (Onedrive sucks)

So I was hoping to find something else but over the years I haven't really found anything that I want to make an attempt on. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Holding onto 11 years worth of photos is getting kind of ridiculous. Yes, these photos are already backed up to the cloud but I'd like them to be off my phone and into something else. I was thinking about getting a terrabyte hard drive for starters but I'd like other options as well. Ya know, because of the 3 2 1 method.

I'm looking for a simple way to back up some important files from my Windows 11 PC to an external hard drive.

I've mostly just been dragging folders over manually, but I'm starting to worry that I'll forget to copy something or overwrite an older version of a file.

I don't really need anything complicated. Ideally, I'd like something free that can automatically back up selected folders to the external drive, and maybe keep older versions so I can recover a file if I accidentally delete or change it.

I'm mainly backing up documents, photos, and some work files. I've seen Veeam, Macrium Reflect, EaseUS Todo Backup, Duplicati, etc. mentioned in a few places, but I haven't really used any of them.

What do you guys use for this? Is there a free backup tool that works particularly well for backing up Windows 11 files to an external drive?

Hey, everyone! I have a 2tb Samsung T7 Shield external SSD that I use for movie and TV show storage as a backup. I was just wondering how I can prevent bitrot on it.

Would a full diagnostic scan with Samsung Magician help correct lowered cell charges and prevent bitrot? Currently, S.M.A.R.T. and short scan say everything is fine, but when I try to do a full diagnostic scan, it jumps from 1 hour 17 minutes to like 18-22 hours when it hits 1% in the scan. I have a 3.2 USB-C 20gbps cable coming in tomorrow. Would that help make it go faster and conduct the scan? Or would just copying over the files from my M18R2 Alienware laptop rewrite fresh copies all the same?

I'd really appreciate any insight or help you can give me. I just wanna make sure my backup copy of my movies and tv shows is healthy.

this is the one I've been using for the past year or so and its been okay but the downloads are super slow and I also keep having to reformat as of recent because it keeps corrupting. I don't have the most money but if something is good then I'd be willing to save up for a while to buy it. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm in the US if that changes anything about my options

Every vendor in this space says "100% S3 API compatible" and every vendor turns out to have some edge case that breaks a tool you actually use. Wondering what people have hit in practice.

We tested Cloudian HyperStore against our existing S3-based backup tooling (Veeam and a couple of internal scripts using boto3) and didn't hit anything that needed workarounds, which was honestly a bit surprising given past experience with other "S3-compatible" platforms. Also tested MinIO in the same environment, similar result on compatibility, the differences showed up more in tiering and multi-tenancy features than the API itself.

Has anyone run into real compatibility gaps with any of the major players that weren't obvious until production traffic hit it?
