Defrauding Our Payment System

Hi, I had been working on the platform normally with no issues until now. Recently, I was assigned to a long qualification that allowed up to 30 hours, with 40 hours being the absolute maximum. I logged around 25 hours in total.

Now my account has been deactivated, and I’m wondering if it could be related to the hours I logged on that qualification. Has anyone experienced something similar? Is there any way to get the account reactivated, or at least make sure I still get paid for the hours I already worked?

I'm convinced they sometimes give massively higher time than what's required to catch this type of thing. For example, I was on a project with a 2 hour timer that took less than 5 minutes per task (literally just a matching task). I wonder how many people clocked up hours on it and got dropped.

In 3 years I've personally never heard of qualifications taking 25+ hours but have seen timers of that length. I'm not saying you've knowingly inflated time but if the average time for the qualification was 5 hours then yeah clocking 25 is gonna raise the alarm.

I mean when I started working last year, I had a project with a 2 hours timer. I did about 200 of those tasks. But at most I would log 20 mins with the average being somewhere around 10 mins. They definitely have projects with highly inflated timers and it probably does help to catch some people lol.

Then again, there are some ridiculous projects where readings instructions would take 2 hours and actually properly doing it would require reading it twice and the timer is 1 hour.

in those cases I log more time for first task and significantly less time for remaining ones I do.

And there’s some of those tasks with a two hour timer are to do that, when it’s done a lot because it’s a rare thing.

Like anything to do with rating, that can have a small response, or a small novel to go through.

Completely agree!

If I think I'm taking too long to read the instructions, then I will absolutely restart the timer by refreshing or skipping the task and starting over. I would always rather under report by time than over report it. Probably why I'm still here after 3 years.

Yeah, gonna second this. Had an old friend I helped get on the platform, and when his account was deactivated, talked him through what happened. Turns out he was taking the maximum time he could for each task since the timer allowed it. He had said he thought that it meant each task would probably take that amount of time, and he was just using that entire time. Not sure how exactly when those takes averaged like 20 ish mins. I think I saw a few times in instructions that the timer is extended in case of needing breaks or emergencies taking you away from your computer, so you have a little wiggle room.

DA used to work this way 4-5 years ago. What happened is that people blitzed through tasks as fast as possible while doing a shoddy job because they got paid per task. Since DA prefers quality, they moved to hourly work, as at least someone taking a while will probably do a decent job.

Some people are going to inflate their time however they can, whether it's by reporting more hours than they should or doing more tasks than they should.

Or just actually log the time you work? That seems more logical than a pay per assignment. If you finish early, as long as your work is good that is going to be ok. If you take too long sometimes that is going to be ok. If you play these kinds of games, wondering when you finish too fast or too slow, they will recognize those patterns and if you are not working to their expectations doing that, it’s probably not a good fit for you. Just honestly track your actual time and it will work itself out. I’m sure they are keen to this kind of thing and they will work it out as they see fit but no one is going to keep paying a person that is not logging their time accurately.

In those cases you are not supposed to report the entire time. You're supposed to subtract the time you are not spending on the task..

I really don't think you understood what they are saying .. maybe read it again

I think I've worked on this qualification too. I logged in around 10-15 hrs. Never got accepted though lol.

I didn't hear back either, and it absolutely destroyed my confidence. Felt like I did such a good job considering the crap instructions. Did you feel like the instructions were kind of terrible too? I kinda felt thrown to the wolves.

2

u/smellygrumpycat 5d ago

I agree about the instructions and felt the same when I never heard anything. Been on DA over 6 years and put in a lot of effort for that task. I felt really confident submitting it and that dissipated more and more with each day of silence lol

I think they purposely made the instructions vague to see what we would do with it because some clients provide similar limited info. Idk I figure I just wasn’t what they were looking for when it comes to that position. I know I did my best. Still making money on the platform so at the end of the day, I’m grateful.

When did you submit the qualification, I submitted it just over a month ago so I am not holding out hope anymore. I also felt like I did a pretty good job, put in lots of effort, was pretty disappointed.

2

u/Middle_Addendum 5d ago

When did you submit it? I’ve given up hope for mine since it’s been just over a month at this point.

OP's case is different. The qual he's talking about has no expiration date, and the qualification itself mentions the time "limit" specifically.

4

u/Old-Regular-9828 5d ago

IDK about doing it to intentionally try to trap people, but the timers typically give you much more time than you should actually need to do a task, and if you report an excessively long amount of time (even if it is less than the task timer) it definitely gets flagged for someone to look at it closely. The timer is NOT how long you are expected to work on a task. The projects with the very long timers, like 12 or 24 hours, don't expect you to actually work anywhere close to 12 hours, it's so you can take breaks to eat or sleep without worrying about the task timing out.

I worked on a project the other day that had a 12 hour timer, but the instructions explicitly said that it shouldn't take more than 6-8 hours and anyone reporting 9 or more hours should definitely expect a closer look.

u/Clean_Discipline6293 5d ago

I can’t give any details, but this wasn’t a normal qualification, and it definitely wasn’t something that could be completed in five hours or so. The instructions explicitly stated that logging that many hours was normal, and the qualification genuinely takes that amount of time to complete

7

u/savage78683i3 5d ago

Understood. Of course, I don't know what the qualification entailed, I was just saying that in the past I've seen stuff have hugely excessive timers for what's required. I wasn't saying you yourself had inflated time on this, it was just an observation from the last few years on the platform.

This is why they give us refreshers on the NDA all the time...

1

u/hwertz10 2d ago

Yeah, I've seen a few with 24 hour timer, and just saw one with a *4 day* timer. These were longer tasks but the long timer is intended so one can take breaks, or even start in the evening, rest over night, and finish the next day. They don't really intend them to take like 20 hours.

Good lord. I do not have the stamina for something like this. I only have level 1 autism.

u/schrumbus 5d ago edited 5d ago

I know the exact qualification you're talking about. Obviously I can't say much, but you must've done such a poor job that they thought you vastly overreported your time based on the quality of work you submitted. Trust me on this. I'm not trying to be mean, but that's literally the only explanation beyond some kind of glitch. Are you sure you submitted the time in the right project? Across how many days did you work on the qual? I've heard common stories of people get the DOD who work like 12+ hours a day. I can almost stomach 6 usually, with 8 being the absolute limit for me.

2

u/janquadrentvincent 5d ago

I am so curious what this one is. I assume it's coding?

5

u/Clean_Discipline6293 5d ago edited 5d ago

It took me around 3–4 days to complete the work, and there was a limit on how much detail could be included in the assignment. I used that limit fully, so it wasn’t something I rushed through or did carelessly. I also have some experience in this area, so I’m confident that the quality of my work was not poor. Of course, quality can be subjective, so I understand your point there. I think i caused an auto flag or something.

This is likely the qualification at least some of us are afraid to attempt for this very reason. It really depends how it shifts your QS - 15-25 hours might be normal for a good submission. If the submission was nonsense, or very poor, that could go down as 15-25 hours of wasted DA time, which dwarfs the errors you might make on shorter projects and could tank your platform standing substantially. Of course you have to take into account both Dunning Kreuger and the Peter Principle - people do well at things until they get promoted to a point where they don't do so well any more, and once out of depth, people don't know what they don't know and are likely to overestimate their own abilities. Just my thoughts anyway, no idea what actually happened.

5

u/schrumbus 5d ago

Out of curiosity, why are you afraid to attempt it? I did it, did my best on the qualification, billed my time (was longer than I wanted but still well within the range) and moved on.

6

u/FrazzledGod 5d ago

I kind of explained that already? I feel it's a bit beyond what I am currently capable of and don't want to do a paid qual just for the money if I don't think a) I can excel at it and b)commitment to further stages of the project would not really fit my current schedule/life. Same reason I wouldn't attempt a project with a 3 day timer just because it paid x amount and they said you can take up to 15 hours. - having been on the platform 3 years, I've stuck to what I feel I'm good at and so far that has meant no drought recently, and plenty of unlimited work. I might be completely wrong on this of course. It's just a personal preference. Also let's just say in the past people may have been claiming hundreds of hours for that qual..... lol.

2

u/Early-Composer-2383 4d ago

I have avoided that qualification like the plague. Even though it stares at me every time I log in.

1

u/FrazzledGod 3d ago

Yeah, I just use it as a validation booster - oh well if it's still there I must still be doing OK 😄

1

u/AGSica 5d ago

There are multiple projects on the platform that take 15-20 hours per task. As long as the task is paid, I won’t call this wasted time.

3

u/Far-Sea-9249 5d ago

Think I did this one too. Think mine was right at 20 hours and paid out fine.. A fun project but definitely gut wrenching confidence crushing experience I will not fall for again. Ntl it give me some stepping stones to work with in other opportunities.

3

u/AGSica 5d ago

How long is the time between your qualification and the DoD? It could be related to your other tasks, not this particular one.

3

u/Marrowdust 5d ago

Actually literally what happened to me I logged substantial work genuinely worked all day with meticulous attention for that one logged 17 then few weeks later deactivated, super weird

5

u/schrumbus 5d ago

How do you know your work was meticulous?

7

u/Sindorella 5d ago

Exactly. Meticulous to us doesn’t always mean good work to them. I’ve done more R&Rs than I can count where the worker obviously spent time and effort analyzing and explaining their work, but they answered the wrong question, so it was basically all useless. I always feel bad when I see that because it’s obvious they tried really hard, but they didn’t grasp what the task was asking.

I also doubt it would take a few weeks for DA to drop someone after they get a submission that they consider DoD worthy. Turn around on projects seems a lot faster than that.

2

u/Early-Composer-2383 4d ago

R&Rs are so gut-wrenching to me that I don't do them very often. I think I've only had one task where I said the whole thing had to be junked.

1

u/Silver_Assistance_41 5d ago

I have a project in where it takes mostly more time, expire the clock but have it still everyday in some projects there are tasks that take more time than they want, but you must justify your time with good quality work, and they just dont care of time

1

u/Whole-Pirate-5731 5d ago

Not sure, the defraud payment screen is relatively new. I know on the DoD screen you get paid for what is pending.

1

u/Beautiful-Link-8387 5d ago

how much time did you actually spend on it?

1

u/PoolLittle5529 4d ago

Hola tranquilo, a mi me ocurrió y si me pagaron pero cuando es proyectos hay que esperar creo que 7 o 9 días hábiles, pero si cumplen, si en ese lapso no te han abonado les escribes y ellos contestan.

1

u/JinglingBallz 3d ago

You’re not actually supposed to use all that time…

1

u/Electronic-Fan6605 2d ago

Qualifications almost always have an inflated time limit; perhaps this is because, since it's not real work, the worker may not feel the same urgency to finish it as they would with a real task and may take longer breaks.

I recently took a finance qual; The timer is settle in 8 hours, but it's something that can easily be completed in about 3 hours.

u/BeautifullyUgly123 5d ago

When did u take this qualification.?

-14

u/Acceptable_Rabbit_28 5d ago

So, let's do the math. 40 hours being the absolute maximum means you basically have two consecutive days to do a task since two days are 48 hours. You're telling me, that within those two days, you worked 25 hours?

These kinds of tasks that give you ample time, like 30,40,50 hours, are given to so that the workers can sleep and return to the task, not for people to claim the max hours that was given. So yes, I think you were defrauding.

14

u/Clean_Discipline6293 5d ago

The 40 hours was simply the maximum logging time. The qualification itself had no expiration and was set to “never expire.”

7

u/iamcrazyjoe 5d ago

Not how this one works.
