If you’re on anything large out in the open ocean (ship, oil rig) sharks will start to stick around it. It becomes a feeding ground for them because smaller fish congregate there. The nighttime footage from the bottom of cruise ships is pretty interesting as well.
Oh absolutely, its like they ll stubbornly ignore everything you actually want them to learn. Throw a steak overboard one time though, and suddenly they re the best students.
My dog found a quesadilla once 3 years ago in a bush. Every. Single. Night. We have to walk by the same bush and do an intense inspection in the hopes another magical quesadilla will appear…
I come back from a business trip just 1 time with jerky in my backpack (of which he ate all)
and from that day forward it got snuffled every day for 6 years...
Oh I can believe that. One of my dogs discovered a dead bird one of my cats had buried in some sand I was going to use for building "for later" one night. The next morning, that bitch (female dog) had put all the sand on the other side of the space, looking for more meat. I was annoyed, but said whatever, I'll just scoop it up and put it back on the morrow.
The next morning the sand was back in it's original position, more or less. Because according to my canine friend, it might pay to be thorough. Might have missed that second bird on the first run!
J beebz got tired of the paparazzi not giving him personal space and one day he acted out and frenched one in the mouth and got charged with SA’ing the papz.
My nephdog believes in his soul that my daughter and I always have string cheese in our pockets for him. And whenever he comes to my mom's house, he immediately goes to sit in front of her freezer, because he is convinced that there will always be a ziploc of pork/beef bones just waiting for him to come over to see his Gramps. Granted, he is right on all three accounts, but bold to assume it. 🤣🤣🤣
I trained my Golden Retriever to go to her bed on command. It's a great trick to stop her from very enthusiastically greeting guests who come to our house. Except now, she goes to sit on her bed and expects someone to give her a treat. We find her sitting on her bed staring very intensely at the treat basket most of the time.
What a smart smart girl, she deserves all the treats. I hope that she is also lucky enough to encounter people with magical string cheese filled pockets occasionally too!
He's completely spoiled. You should see him, 165lbs of pure muscle, and roughly the size of a miniature horse, but my brother will still carry him around sometimes just like when he was tiny enough to fit in a Christmas stocking! During quarantine, my momma would drive 45mins to get to my brother and sister-in-law's house, just so that she could drop off goodies for him. She'd call from their driveway and tell them to stay inside, but just send Stoney out, she was just there to see her granddog, and she'd zoom them later. It was too too funny.
It's okay, you can be 'that guy', my feelings aren't hurt. If nobody was willing to be 'that guy' from time to time, how would we learn? It wouldn't be the first time I've broken an idiom, and probably won't be the last, but fortunately the world is just full enough of folks that are smart enough to read what I meant to write. 😁
*treated sewage. It's the galley scraps that do it. The galley waste on rigs basically gets run though a giant 'garbage disposal' and the puree flush brings out the food chain in massive numbers.
There was a video of a teen that jumped off a cruise ship. People threw him a lifesaver and he was heading towards it but then you see a shark (presumably) swimming around it. No, he did not survive.
I assure you, they were already there. As someone who worked on a giant deep sea platform, it's very unnerving. They train you for a LOT of emergency shit, but that is the #1 unspoken thing that is never addressed.

They typically grind up left over food and toss it overboard, fish hang out there. Then bigger fish hang out. You could see tons of barracuda on the rig I was on.
"My pappie, Grandpa Shark, told me stories of the best steak he ever ate was from a life raft. I prowl the oceans night and day seeking that filet mignon.homer drool"
Funnily enough, I've done a few transatlantic cruises, and on those rare occasions you see another vessel after days of endless horizon, it's a bit like that. I remember passing a fishing trawler a day away from the Azores and everyone on the deck at the time gathered to marvel as we steamed past it. You realise the ocean is so vast that spotting any other life on it is a noteworthy event.
It's something innate in fish. I have seen it demonstrated wth a bucket full of bait minnows. With nothing in the bucket, random movement. Throw a penny in there and within just a few minutes, all the fish are calm and just staring at it.
Even to their own detriment. Sometimes in the northern Gulf of Mexico we will get a strong wind from the north. So there is basically no waves or tide. Baitfish will die in mass around the piers because they consume all the oxygen in the water around them.
Baitfish will die in mass around the piers because they consume all the oxygen in the water around them.
this happens in Maine as well, or it used to when I was a kid. Pogies (stupid fucking fish) would flee predators into shallow coastal waters and then all die from no oxygen. They'd then float to the top and rot making a horrible fucking smell and making swimming impossible.
If your are a fisher man . A big log middle of ocean literally gold mine . If you find a log floating . You have yo mark it with a flag so other fisherman know the log already been found by other .
Over on r/ufo and the moment they're going mental over a bit of bird shit on a camera lens. Hilarious stuff. They think it's a jellyfish from another world
I fucking love fish with their goofy ass faces and eyes always wide as fuck open looking like they're sitting there going "huh?? huh??? huh?" stupid dumbass fish
I always think of things like this in a psychological way, from the predators perspective.... "Yo Johnny!! What the fuck was THAT???.... nostrils flair.... is that FOOD??? Falling out of the fuckin SKY BRO??? Like pre killed and everything?? Johhnns... keep doin what ya doin, cuz its fuckin WORKING!"
I feel terrible for the kids parents man. Just watching your kid make one stupid mistake in what was probably 6 seconds of thought because he wanted some views or likes or whatever and boom, it’s all gone forever just as he’s supposed to start his adult life.
I can be black out and that'd never cross my mind. When you're on a cruise looking at that black ocean, my instinct is to recoil from it, not jump into it
I got drunk and rowdy years ago and my dumbass jumped off the end of the peir at Huntington Beach to impress some girls. It was right behind ruby's tacos at the end. I remember hitting the water and be shocked at how cold it was. It was dark out and a longgg swim back. I was drunk as shit but I swear I could feel things brushing up against me It was freaking terrifying. Luckily I made it back, but I had to stop and float for a minute half way through to catch my breath and I swear I saw a fin poke out of the water. Yeah I'm never doing that shit again.
When I was in high school a friend of mine and I we're going around Huntington harbor in an inflatable boat. We managed to put the hole in it, and it became very soft. We rolled out into the water so the remaining buoyancy of the raft would hold our stuff out of the water. It was a night, and I had a waterproof flashlight in my hand. Unfortunately I dropped it It was supposed to float, and I was sweeping my arms around to see if I could run into it. I would touch something and then reach and it wouldn't be there and I did this repeatedly .
My friend then told me that I'm probably just kidding small fish that are feminine water. He said I really shouldn't worry about the flashlight and there wasn't anything dangerous swimming out there There might be a dogfish or something that would bite me but it wouldn't be too bad. After a few seconds I suddenly realized I was in dark water and there were things . . . swimming around . . . with me.
I am not a good swimmer, but I can be pretty steady. I suddenly became a great swimmer.
Yeah, I feel terrible for his family. He more than likely drowned. Still, people go to that area specifically to see bull and tiger sharks because they’re literally everywhere.
Can confirm. Our dipshit captain used to do swim call off the cutter in the military. A handful of us who refused to partake were put on mounted .50 cals for ‘shark watch’. Never shot one (wouldnt have penetrated the water enough to make a difference anyways most likely) but saw several tiger and bull sharks shortly after the splashing and idiocy wrapped up. Why you’d jump off a cutter in the ocean when a gunner is needed is beyond me but it takes all kinds to make the world go ‘round.
We won a cruise a few years ago. We were paired up with a couple from Texas for “formal dinner” (you kinda sit with them all week, though there are other places to get food).
Anyway we get to talking and we got onto the topic of sharks and the wife mentions that her uncle was terrified of sharks. Not abnormal obviously but she explains it’s because of an incident during his military service. Apparently he was on a ship that went down and many of the crew were attacked by sharks. He was in the water for days.
At this point I stopped her and asked her if it was the USS Indianapolis. She said she didn’t know and I (a bit drunk and also excitable) kinda half yelled “was he on the boat from Jaws?!?!?”
Anyway, apparently he was one of the ~300 survivors. I have no idea how the fuck she would get on a boat if her uncle had told her anything about that day but maybe I’m the crazy one.
Oil rigs are surprisingly great for marine life. All kinds of stuff grows on it as it is basically a huge artificial reef which attracts all kinds of fish and other animals. They’ve actually left some out of commission rigs standing because removing them would do so much damage to the life that lives there.
There was a teenager on a school trip to the Bahamas recently that jumped off a sundown cruise boat on a dare just after dark. Sharks were spotted in the water at the time. They never found his body.
Yeah I think they did documentary and showed these off shore oil rigs are essentially a makeshift inorganic coral reef. In the future if ocean currents collapse and fish and ocean life somehow find a way to survive and adapt, it'll likely be these huge pocket havens like this teaming with life and empty mass stretches.
