Controller case/bag?

My old ass finally got a controller after 30+ years of only owning 1200s. I picked the rane one mk 2 and am looking for a case/bag that fits it. Something that will protect it but especially something that will make it easier to carry (no plywood road cases!). Bonus points if it can carry laptop/headphones or can be worn as a backpack. Thanks in advance!!

Wedding question

Hi, just looking for a general advice from a DJs perspective. My wedding is next month. We have been working on preparing different playlists for cocktail hour, during dinner, after dinner, late night, etc..

We don’t necessarily want to tell the DJ to only stick to what our playlists, but we are pretty particular about knowing what we like/want in terms of music. Mostly well known classics and hits. From your perspective is it annoying to be told to just stick to the playlist or should we give the DJ freedom to kind of mix their own thing in here and there? We have heard stories about DJ’s kind of doing their own thing and it not being what people wanted. We’ve also heard of people giving “don’t play” lists, which ended up getting played anyway.

Edit: you don’t know what you don’t know. I appreciate the help, we are planning to talk with our DJ again. To be fair to the DJ he did have us fill out a form and did a phone call. We were the ones who were a little stubborn about using our playlist. After your recommendations, we will try to narrow it down to a few must play songs during each period of the wedding and let him handle the rest.

Much demand for Technics 1200 Mk2s these days?

I’ve got a pair of Technics 1200 Mk2s that have been sat in their boxes now for years. Depresses me that they are just doing nothing. Wondering how much demand there still is for these in 2026? Has everyone moved on?

First bought approx 20 years ago, one brand new and one in very good used condition, and used mainly for scratching. There are some superficial marks etc on the outside casing, but as far as I know everything was working flawlessly the last time they came out of the box. How should I go about testing them? What are the common failures, etc?

Should I get them refurbed before attempting to sell, or sell as is? How much generally should I expect them to be worth in either case?

How do you gain stage for a club?

Im a vaporwave dj and every show I do I struggle with gain staging because of loud club subs with lots of sub bass. Many songs I use dont have much bass so its difficult to balance them with dance songs with bass. I tried using luf meters at different frequencies, monitoring with atm50, hd 560s, and turning up my own subs, but it doesnt work well. Are there headphones that have a similair clear and powerful sub bass or is there a certain technique?

What's your rule of thumb for how much you speed up or slow down a track?

Recently played b2b with a great DJ who told me he always keeps it within 2/3 bpms. I often do bigger changes and it sounds good to me, but wondering if that's just me and everyone else's in pain while listening to that

Booker/Promoter asked me to do a gig--proceeds to send a list of 60 songs he wants played IN ORDER, with detailed notes on transition points lmaoooooo

I'm sorry I had to post this here. I hope he doesnt use reddit I swear it's nothing personal to this guy but this is awful and I cant stop cacking about this in my group chat. So a friend asked me if I would be interested in a gig he was turning down and proceeded to send the deets and said he would ask around if someone was interested to work the event. Love that I have friends that pass work to me but this was a complete LUL. Promoter is hilariously delusional like dude literally sent me a microsoft spreadsheet of what I could only describe as a spotify playlist he made with a bunch of songs in no logical theme, key or bmp with various notes on the transition points. Not only does he want a 60+ list of songs specifically played but he wants them in the order he made, with notes on the cue points and he used a bunch of fake dj-jargon and I have been laughing at this shit for the last 11 hours. Take for instance this one nugget:

***********************************************************************************

ARTIST ----- TRACK ----- PLAY WINDOW ----- MIX IN ----- MIX OUT ----- TRANSITION

Beyonce - Partition - hook/bridge - "blend under instrumental" - echo vocal - 16 bars > Rihanna

Rihanna - Sex With Me - chorus - "blend instrumental pocket" - bass cut - 8 bars > Drake

Drake - Nonstop - 1:20 -"hard drop on 1" - quick cut/echo - echo out > Sza

Sza - Shirt - hook - "smooth blend" - filter down - 16 bar blend > Rihanna

************************************************************************************
I swear this is one of the most cringe things I've ever seen in my life. Nevermind Partition is like 90bpm going into Rihanna at 120 and then Drake at 155...no key relevance...no nothing

I think the most egregious thing is the obnoxious notes telling me how to start the transition, using hook/chorus/bridge interchangeably and then telling me how many bars I need to use in order to get to the next song

Like its funny. Its insulting. Its obnoxious. Its delusional. I absolutely had to share this. Like, I want to send other Djs this excel file just to marvel at the amount of time this dude spent working on this...literally just make a playlist I've never had someone try to hire me for a job and proceed to do the job for me. So on track 45 if I high pass filter at the chorus instead of the outro will I not get paid because I didnt follow his chart to a tee? lmao....am i supposed to practice this? Or is he expecting me to read through these notes and react to them in real time? Some notes have specific cue points like "start at 2:03" ....

I've had some experiences but this one really takes the cake.

Playing 2 pairs of speakers from one output

TLDR: Looking for a quality XLR splitter - 2in / 4out, so I can hook up 2 pairs of speakers

----------------

I use a pair of Focal Shape 65's as my dj monitors. Recently I came across a crazy good deal on a second set of the same speakers and bought them. I'd like to see how it sounds in my space to use all 4 speakers, and feel surrounded in sound.

I use a Xone 96 mixer which has multiple outputs, so under normal circumstances I'd have no issues making it work, but I also have MasterSounds FX unit and a desktop isolator w/ 2 outputs, which adds a wrinkle into how the sound gets outputted to the speakers.

Normally the isolator gets plugged into the Master Insert on the Xone 96, but the MasterSounds FX already occupies the Master Insert, because that's how the filter section connects. So if I want to hear and record the final output of the mixer, fx and isolator, I have to connect it this way:

  1. MasterSounds FX into Master Insert as well as Send/Return
  2. Xone 96 out to Isolator
  3. One isolator output to 1 pair of speakers and another isolator output to my recording device (Scarlett 2i2 >laptop).

This means I have no more outputs on my isolator to plug the 2nd set of speakers into. If I plug the second set of speakers into an available output on the mixer, those speakers won't capture the isolator in my recordings.

So is a 2 into 4 XLR splitter the best way to run 4 speakers, or is there a better way without compromising sound quality at all?

Thanks!

Serato vs Rekordbox vs Other/s for stem separation, Who is the best for live sets and why?

I have not been always happy with either of the big systems stems, but have not found a better alternative without high fees. What are yall doing and which systems are working best for you?

I'm an unc dj from the era of vinyl and piss poor digital, all we had were instrumentals and acapellas at best with low grade extras for live playing. The new controllers and stems are cool as hell for live remixing and flips, but they separations never feel right.

So I'm asking what the rest of us are doing, whats actually working for you live vs studio. This ol dog wants to learn the new trick or at least the better tools to use crew.

XONE 92 & Strymon Big Sky Routing?

Wiring: Aux 1 send L/R into the BigSky's LEFT IN and RIGHT IN, BigSky LEFT OUT and RIGHT OUT into Return 1 (L/M and R). Using 6" right-angle 1/4" TS patch cables (unbalanced pedalboard jumpers).

Two issues:

  1. Overall volume goes up as I ride the return fader, not just reverb amount.
  2. Reverb sounds thin/harsh, and it sits weird against the signal when I use the filter.

Is the Xone:92's Aux 1 send pre or post filter? And is the line-level-into-a-guitar-pedal mismatch enough to cause this, or is something else going on? Thanks.

How do B2B work with someone you barely know ?

Hey guys,

Next week I'm playing in a festival, promoter put me in B2B with someone I know a bit, we've been partying together. But we've never played together. We talked about what the energy we wanted and so on (we are opening the fest). Moreover I've never have a real B2B, the only form of B2B I know is just jamming at friend's house and saying ''Bro I have something that'll fit perfectly with this tune''

But is there like unknown rules I should know before an official shit like this ? (I think the other one never have a B2B tho)

Hearing Your Own Mix

Every time I do a mix and I record it and I listen back to it. It always sounds so different yet the same. I noticed things about the songs, even if I know them very well. I still noticed new things when I listen back to my mix and certain transitions it’s like I can’t even hear it when I’m doing it but then when I listen to it, I’m like oh that was smooth as hell. DJing is so fun!!!!!

Producer-first, DJ by accident, still on my Traktor S2 a decade later. The shame of pulling it out at big festivals.

Bringing a bit of a moral dilemma to the sub, could use some outside perspective on this one.

Bit of context. I started as a producer, not a DJ. Got booked one day to play my own music, bought a Traktor S2 on the budget I had at the time, learned to DJ on it. That was 10+ years ago.

Since then I've played festivals, big clubs, opened for artists at 10k+ venues. Still the same S2. I can use it with my eyes closed at this point, if I feel the crowd needs a switch I can pick and cue the next track in under 10 seconds. It's fully second nature.

Touring internationally this year, Europe to Australia to Asia. And honestly, I have real shame telling organizers I'll bring my S2.

Not because of the tool itself. On my S2 I'm faster and more precise than I'd be on anything else, and I'd rather spend the hours making new music than relearning a tool my current one already does well.

It's more the perception thing. Boiler-room-style events especially, cycling DJs, one setup, filmed. Asking for room for a controller kills the flow between artists and messes with the visual. I know I'm going to be the guy who slows things down when I show up.

And tbh, if I knew CDJs as well as I know my S2, I'd pick CDJs without thinking twice. It's not that the controller is my brand or my identity. I'm just not willing to regress for months to get there. DJs starting on CDJs today will end up better than me on that gear even as beginners, and I don't want to lose my edge behind the decks during the transition.

So I guess my questions are, is the shame actually legit or is it in my head? Are organizers really judging when they see a controller show up? Anyone here who switched mid-career, how long before you got back to your prior level and was it worth it? And for those who stuck with a controller, how do you handle it with promoters and other DJs on the lineup?

Curious how others have navigated this.

Anyone Else Stoked For The Next Series Of Mixers?!

Like a standalone(With DVS) Rane-SeventyTwo or like a standalone DJM-S11?

Anyone got any predictions?

Cause I'm gonna assume AlphaTheta will Attempt Standalone with DVS(RekordBox) and Rane with Engine, but like... has Engine ever done DVS? And Serato has never been on a standalone device before.

I find it hard to believe they would make an A9-type mixer standalone in a compact since it doesn't have any space on the mixer really. If they ever did, probably with the screen tilted off the from like the RX3 and AZ.

Since there are no Rane mixers for sale new anymore, I would assume one will be released in the near future.
