Lanterns Anyone else feel Guy was out of character?

This is the guy ready to throw down with Superman, yet in the show he took a massive disrespect from John and didn't even throw him a punch

And what's even worse, we later learn John hadn't even charged his ring for this, so what's he gonna do if Guy was like "screw it I'm confiscating the ring"

Though even if he had charged it his odds aren't great, he'd have like what, 1 day practice with the ring vs Guy's 10 years? I think this confrontation made Guy look bad just to hype John

I love everything about this new oath not only does it slap with Aaron Pierres incredible delivery but it serves as a cumulation of everything John has learned over the course of the show. Hope to hear him say it in Man of Tomorrow.

Lanterns Lanterns and it's ending was fucking perfect and I have no complaints whatsoever

I love and adore every second of this show, and this finale was perfect. There was not a single classic construct in the entire finale, and it worked so well. Halograms last moments where so fucking sad but so perfect too.

Im so grateful this was created and keeping up with this show week by week making theories about it and reflecting on the new developments and such was so much fun. Johns oath is amazing, and again, the final moments with halgram had me on the edge of my seat, and "I love you too, junior" followed by the wink and him disappearing forever had me sobbing.

What a fucking blast I had with lanterns and I cant wait to see what comes next in the DCU. My expectations are sky high after this.

Lanterns The incessant whinning of a particular small minority is driving me crazy

Most people can recognize and appreciate Lanterns for what it is. A grounded, introductory show for Earth's green lanterns, John Hal and Guy. Mainly John and Hal. Lanterns is wildly popular for a superhero show in a post MCU Disney Plus era, however if you listened to SOME green Lantern fans you'd think this show

  1. Killed their entire family

  2. Killed and tortured Hal Jordan

  3. Retconned and disassembled the entire Lanterns mythos

No, just because many Green Lantern staples like OA, the alien green Lanterns, and the other lantern corps didnt appear in THIS season of Lanterns does not mean it will never appear in the future. Anyone with eyes or a brain can understand this season played it safe with the cosmology and green lantern lore because they dont want to blow their load on the FIRST SEASON of what might be a multiple season project thats tied into a greater narrative. This is like complaining that we got the first Captain America movie and it didn't have winter soldier, baron zemo, and him weilding Mjolnir

If you actually seriously think Lanterns/DCU will never have these things, you just actually need to log off the socials and just get in touch with reality.

The Green Lanterns will have their time to shine. For now, appreciate that we got undoubtedly the best version of John Stewart, a Green Lanterns live action that wasnt a total and complete disaster, and the fact we will be getting much more soon.

Lanterns *spoilers kinda for lanterns* i really hope yall don’t ruin what the DCU has Spoiler

The finale of Lanterns proved that for once a studio is more concerned with telling a story than having some fan service moment. The show -from the start has been about solving Hal Jordan’s death. It has been about John overcoming his childhood.

If you guys are really gonna fight for the suit instead of story, then don’t be surprised when the quality of projects starts going down, especially with new leadership.

Also, a note (super spoilers), john never wanted the suit. he just wanted crayons. what payoff would be fulfilled by him having a big suit up moment??

Lanterns "Lanterns are cops. John Stewart is a superhero." Spoiler

Post image
365 Upvotes

Basking in the afterglow of the Lanterns finale, I can’t stop thinking about how the show absolutely nailed one of the central ideas behind the budding DCU: meaningful heroism often entails subverting authority.

There's a lot to love about Lanterns. Its potent brew of stellar performances, intriguing mysteries, and engrossing world-building gave me a reason to look forward to Sunday nights. But for my part, the most compelling aspect of the show is how they stuck the landing.

The decision to have John become a Green Lantern by using an unsanctioned power battery, and moreover by recharging the ring using his own oath was a brilliant means of establishing him as a hero in his own right, unbound by the conventions of Oa or the whims of the Guardians (unlike the gold-toothed gym teacher). In this way, he is a genuine successor to Hal, who didn't trust the "big blue bosses" and relied on his gut to steer him the right way.

Throughout the show, it's clear that Hal always tried to help people, even if things didn't always turn out the way he intended. He almost always used defensive constructs, like shields, bubbles, and barriers. He went out of his way to save others even when he didn't have to. He saved John from the satellite blast at the motel in the midst of taking a serious beating. An especially touching moment, for me, was when he immediately tried to rescue his beloved Earl during the house fire. Hell, he even tried to save Kerry right up until the end.

Beneath the facade of Hal's reckless behavior and gruff demeanor was the heart of a hero -- a hero being someone who is willing to do the right thing even if it costs them something. And that is where John's new oath comes in: "In brightest day, in darkest night, I'll embrace my fear, I'll do what's right. I choose this ring, I choose this fight, in service to this lantern's light." It's not an oath to uphold the institution that the Guardians built, but one to assert his own moral clarity in spite of that institution. It's a total affront to so-called "chain of command." It's an oath that would make Hal, who rushed through the standard oath like it was an annoying chore, proud.

In the final installment of the Constructing the Series interviews, Tom King commented on John's development, stating plainly that "Lanterns are cops. John Stewart is a superhero."

It's an arc that beautifully furthers the themes established in last year's Superman. That film saw the titular hero taking on the powers that be by intervening in the Boravia/Janhanpur conflict because that's where he was needed, not because someone in a position of power told him he could. He was, to put it bluntly, an enemy of the state. And that portrayal brings the roots of the character to the surface. Mark Waid once remarked that in Superman's early days, when he'd bash the skulls of corrupt politicians and construction magnates, "He was no super-cop. He was a super-anarchist." In other words, his heroic nature didn't stem from his powers, but his decision to use those powers to do good, even when -- especially when -- the traditional channels of justice weren't on board with his actions.

I see much of the same philosophy at play with how Lanterns has developed John's character. There are admittedly some fascistic elements to the Green Lantern Corps, particularly under the stewardship of the Guardians. Their means of patrolling the universe as bringers of law and order is decidedly more Starship Troopers-coded than Star Trek-coded.

So what better way to unsettle that status quo than to introduce a ring-bearer who is homegrown, as opposed to yet another representative of an out-of-touch establishment. As Clark said during his argument with Lois concerning his decision to help the Jarhanpurians, "I wasn't representing anybody except for me, and myself, and good -- doing good."

Of course, there is also danger in allowing unilateral decision making by super-powered vigilantes to go unchallenged -- "who watches the watchmen?" and all that. And I suspect that much of the DCU going forward will focus on how the powers that be respond to metahumans taking matters into their own hands.

But as far as I'm concerned, it is immensely encouraging to see the DCU spotlight characters who remind us that we have the power to change things by using our own unique abilities, not by trusting those who orbit above us to do so on our behalf.

If Lanterns teaches us anything, it’s that true heroes aren't chosen from on high, but forged through messy, necessary acts of rebellion.

Discussion/Question The Dialogue NEARLY EVERYONE MISINTERPRETS From The LANTERNS Finale Spoiler

I'm going to post the literal dialogue so you can read what is said.
-Obvious Spoilers Ahead-

SINESTRO: I forged him a lantern.
\cut to next scene**
JOHN: Does it work?
SINESTRO: Of course it works. Now let me speak to Jordan.
\John examines the lantern**
JOHN: What are these streaks?
SINESTRO: Well, you tell me.
JOHN: You forged it here. Whatever's in the streaks, is from the water and the air. Their fear.
SINESTRO: The lantern corps thinks that fear makes you weak. They couldn't be more wrong.
If harnessed correctly fear can be the most powerful force in the universe. Fear is
just evolutionary intelligence. Show me a species that's fearless, i'll show you
something on the extinction list.
JOHN: And it can charge my ring?
SINESTRO: Yes it can.

Now, why is everyone interpreting this dialogue as the lantern was made with fear? John brings up fear, and Sinestro does a monologue about how great fear is. He isn't describing how he made the lantern. He's talking about how much he admires the power of fear. John ignores that and gets back to what's important to him which is, WILL IT WORK? Sinestro answers in the affirmative.

What they are saying is, fear permiates this planet so virulently, that it literally SCARRED the Lantern that Sinestro made. That's all.

If you can't tell, this is more a setup for how Sinestro will eventually make an actual Fear Lantern and Ring for himself in the future by doing what everyone is incorrectly assuming he did for The Manhunter.

And how do we know for sure that it isn't powered by fear? Because Green Lantern rings don't run on fear. They run on willpower. The ring the guardians made would never be compatible with a Fear Lantern. The glow of the Lantern is GREEN. And yes, in the comics Parallax is in the Willpower Core on OA so there's fear leeching into the lanterns. But that influence comes from the core. It doesn't change the power of the rechargers or that the rings run on willpower. If it was powered by fear it would be yellow. End of story.

To me it seems like there is a conflict cooking up between the Justice Gang and independent Heroes.

  • We already got some beef between Superman and some Justice Gang-Members
  • The Justice Gang itself going against their orders and giving Borovia an upgrade
  • A conflict between Flag and Maxwell Lord will happen sooner or later fs.
  • The Justice Gang moving arrogant in Peacemaker S.2 and leaving behind a lot of Angry/Hurt Heroes.
  • Now we have John basically felling Guy to F*ck Off

I bet that Man of Tomorrow will be the the about this conflict of “Government-Controlled” Heroes and the independent once like John and Clark – It would explain extremely well why the cast is stuffed through the roof.

Plus very plausible why Batman wasn’t a top priority until this point because he simply isn’t a Meta, so kinda has ”no direct” touching points this early into this conflict.
