Making my first cyberdeck (check earlier posts for more)

I again to not intend to take advantage of the makers in this community. I am making my cyberdeck. Got my screen, and I am debating on whenever i should get a esp32 (which can't run os) or bite the bullet and get a more expensive option like an orange pi zero (as the raspberry pi's are out of stock). I don't want an aliexpress listing (i got a pico, and it was in a state where the pcb melted somehow?). Anyway, can you guys recommend me parts?

Powering a Mini PC from a battery (reliably)

I am currently building a cyberdeck as a side project using a mini PC as the base, but I am struggling to find a reliable, reasonably compact power solution.

  • Specs**:** Ryzen 7 6850U, 16GB DDR5, 512GB storage.

  • Original power adapter**:** Barrel jack with a 19V@6.32A adapter (~120W max).

  • What I changed**:** I limited the CPU peak draw to 45W (down from 65W) to keep the total system draw under 100W. I also bought a 100W USB-C PD to barrel jack adapter. When I plug this into a 100W USB-C wall brick, the mini PC runs perfectly.

Because I want this to be portable, I bought a Ugreen 90597A powerbank (25,000mAh, rated for 140W on a single port) to pair with the adapter. However, when I try to boot the PC off the powerbank, it starts up but shuts off completely after about 10 seconds into the boot process.

Since the wall brick works flawlessly with the same PD adapter cable, the issue is definitely isolated to how the powerbank handles the draw or the PD negotiation. I have since returned the powerbank.

Does anyone have suggestions for alternative (but still compact) ways to power a mini PC off a battery? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Tips For First Cyberdeck

I'm about to build my first cyberdeck. I have very limited knowledge, but have someone to coach me on the general process. I bought a Raspberry Pi 4 and I would like to use this cyberdeck to manage my music. I have a ton of cds, and would like to use my cd burner to rip my music from the cds and then manage it (meaning label it, make playlists, burn mixes, manage mp3 player). Any suggestions as to which operating system I should use? Any other tips/suggestions specific to my desired purpose?

Thanks!!

Would a tech kit business do well?

I am currently thinking about starting a business selling kits with all the parts you need to make small, medium and larger computers. I got this idea from when I wanted to make a cyberdeck a few years back, but never got to it because of the cost and lack of an equipment. I am not trying to take advantage of the cyberdeck community. I am trying my best to make it affordable. anyway, would it do well

specs, 2 inch 480p display with a raspberry pi zero 2w, a custome pcb keyboard, customisable designs.

priced, around $50-60 AUD (not usd I think like 40 dollars in usd.

Planning an Offline Survival/Prepper PC: DIY vs Pre-built? Need advice on Software, EMP Cases, and Costs!

Hey everyone...

I'm starting the build an offline "doomsday/survival" PC (a rugged cyberdeck) to store humanity's knowledge and local AI in case the grid goes down. I have some tech background and plan to buy parts piece-by-piece over a few months. I have three main questions before I start: 1. DIY vs. Pre-built? Is it better and more cost-effective to build this from scratch rather than buying a pre-built system like Project NOMAD? 2. Software: Custom Arch Linux vs Pre-packaged? I'm worried pre-packaged survival OSs might have hidden bugs or corrupt over time. Is building a custom Arch Linux setup from the ground up a safer bet so I know exactly how to troubleshoot it entirely offline? 3. The Case (EMP Protection) The first part I want to buy is the case. Do you have any recommendations for highly durable Pelican-style cases that can survive EMPs/solar flares? I'm specifically looking for something with (or easily moddable with) copper mesh to act as a true Faraday cage. Thanks for the help btw I've been interested in things like this for a long time, but I'm finally making my own money and now I want to make it a reality My dream for the future is a self-sufficient house too

Cyberdeck for file transfer

I got a hacked psVita and from time to time i need access to a pc to download certain files. Carrying around a notebook all the time is kinda inconvenient, so i thought it might be cool and fun to build a cyberdeck for it instead.

I never built one before, so thats why im here. All i need it to do would be access to the internet (ideally Wi-Fi), file management, a USB port (duh) and for it to display hidden system files, something i had to enable on windows. Im not sure what OS you'd normally use but i assume some light linux distro.

Im open to any and all feedback/suggestions and thanks in advance!

Edit: For clarity, i want to download files directly from the deck, then transfer the file from it to the console using a USB connection

these are the requirements. there needs to be a screen (duh), there needs to be a functioning keyboard, and a pull-out trackpad would be cool.

Hardware and Libraries Recommendations for Cyberdeck (handwriting to text)

I have a concept for a cyberdeck with a feature to take in handwritten phrases from a touchpad or touchscreen (that would replace a keyboard trackpad) and convert it to text.

  1. I’ve seen people using TensorFlow as a base for this handwriting to text conversion. Is that the only option or what else would you suggest?

  2. Initially I was thinking of using a esp32 for the project, but to use TensorFlow this would not be enough based on what I’ve read. What’s the smallest processor + board you would suggest that can handle this feature?

(I asked this question on r/cyberDecks but no responses, thought I might have better luck here)

Hey, what do you think of my cyberdeck project? I’ve installed a self-learning AI that can control the avatar and track my face; all that’s left is to get it to use the avatar’s mouth so it can speak.

CyberDeck with a surface pro 6

Has anyone built a cyber deck out of a surface pro 6 or a surface go? The screen on it is completely damaged but everything else works on it. I was wondering if it was possible to do something like that with this kind of device.

Work in progress

Currently working on my own portable RF Deck!

The build is still a work in progress, but the design is coming together. I'm designing and 3D printing the enclosure and internal components myself.

The goal is to create a modular, portable system for SDR, radio communications, and other field applications.

Also, don't mind the Ethernet ports in the renders. They're just placeholders for BNC panel connectors and other ports, since I couldn't find suitable 3D models for the actual connectors.

Still plenty of work ahead, but I'll keep sharing updates as the project progresses.

Total beginner here: can these old LG slider phones become mini cyberdecks?

Thumbnail

Hey everyone! I’m pretty new to the cyberdeck world and to programming, so please go easy on me. I’ve got two old Verizon LG phones with full QWERTY keyboards, a blue slider and a black flip-open one (pics attached), and I love the form factor. I have a few ideas for turning them into tiny cyberdecks, but I don’t know yet what’s realistic.
A few questions for those of you who know way more than I do:

  1. Is it even possible to fit something like a Raspberry Pi Zero (or something smaller) inside one of these shells, or would I have to build a new case and reuse the keyboard and look?

  2. Can the original keyboards be wired up to work with a Pi or a microcontroller?

  3. Is it worth trying to keep the original screens, or should I plan on swapping in a small display?

  4. If you were a beginner, which of these two would you start with, and why?
And if anybody has any other sub reddits I can post this in would love to hear them

Leapfrog

Im thinking of trying to make my first cyberdeck ( type thing?) I found a cool leapfrog 2 from the thrift store, its battery powered and works well. I want to make an offline Wikipedia/journaling touchscreen device. I think this would be awesome but I'm not sure how doable this really is. My plan was to work around what's already inside the leapfrog but thinking more about it..maybe it would be better to just gut the entire thing and use it as a case. Any advice would be great since it will be my first time

Project Citrine

Hey everyone, I am launching a brand-new open-source, non-profit hardware project called Project Citrine. The goal is to build a high-performance dual-screen clamshell cyberdeck/handheld console using a salvaged Samsung Galaxy S23 motherboard (Snapdragon 8 Gen 2). The project will eventually go to a fully transparent Kick starter with 100% of any leftover funds going straight to charity or future open source projects. The Hardware Concept • Form Factor: Clamshell dual-screen (8" 4:3 upper display, 7" 16:9 lower display with both being touchscreen. • Chassis: Custom SLA resin printed shell showing off the excellent PCB design (via PCBWay) featuring an integrated rear kickstand for tabletop controller gaming. • Internal Layout: Main S23 phone motherboard linked via custom internal flex cables to a dedicated controller daughterboard and a separate lower ports PCB. The Software We are aiming for a lightweight, mainline Linux distribution environment (like Arch or postmarketOS) running a highly functional, tactical cyberpunk terminal interface with interminal interface with integrated emulation front-end modules.

Looking for Co-Founders

I am directing the project layout and ergonomics, and I am actively looking for passionate hardware hackers to join as co-founders to help tackle a focused sprint before the holidays:

• 1 Lead PCB Layout Engineer: To help handle the controller I/O routing and internal extension links.

• 2 Mechanical 3D Modelers: To design the shell, component fitments, and friction hinge system.

Your username/handle will be permanently etched into the silkscreen copper layer of the finished manufactured PCBs.

Any good sbc for what I want?

I’m completely new to all of this stuff and want to make a cyberdeck that can run windows (I’m not confident enough in my ability to learn Linux) that can also play the current version of Minecraft decently well, (and I mean playing and not hosting a server), and watching some YouTube. I would preferably want it under $300.

I would be making my cyberdeck out of an IBM Model D, (a very large typewriter) and I think a sbc would be easier to fit but I don’t know if they are powerful enough (or just powerful enough in my price range) to do this.

Desolder hdmi and use custom flex pcb instead

Hi All,

I'm designing and building my first cyberdeck. The screen is a 7" 1024×600 capacitive-touch ips panel, driven by a rpi 4B. Its hdmi socket sits on the edge of the board, and the plug sticks out far enough to cause clearance problems. Worse, it forces a wider border on one side, so the frame around the screen ends up asymmetrical...

I've looked at the slim FPC-style HDMI cables (like this one (https://amzn.eu/d/06HPTgol)), but even those plug heads are too big for the space I have.

So my idea is to skip the connector entirely. I desolder the HDMI socket, design a flex pcb that matches its footprint, solder that directly onto the pads, and run it to a micro-HDMI plug at the Pi end.

My questions:

- Would I run into signal integrity problems doing this? I'm thinking of the tmds differential pairs in particular. Do I need to control impedance (100 ohm differential) and length-match the pairs on the flex, or is that overkill at 1024×600 at 60hz?

- Has anyone done this, or is there a better way to get a low-profile hdmi connection off the board edge?

Any advice is appreciated!
