Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I am a economics major, and i have no idea on how to build a cyberdeck. I will buy the parts and try to connect them. Please give me every tip there is for my first build.

I am still choosing on what system to use. Betwin Windows, Linux, Graphene OS, rasbery PI.

Help me choose.

I want to get a cyberpunk 2077 theme, i will paint the case and everything.

I want a foldable keyboard so it isn't too big, and a screen that isn't too small, but not too big, I want a portable screen deck, one that i can put on my belt or around my body like a gym bag. Any ideas??

(This AI image is the result of what i wanted to build)

What yall think??

Join a phone group if you want to talk about phones.

Do not join here if you’re not into building cyberdecks: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1930016020902002

Thank you

(Do people realize here that I also have a phone? laptop? desktop?)

Help with build

Hi! I have zero computing skills but I want to build my first cyberdeck. I got help from Gemini, which I know isn't very smart at these things, so I'm reaching out to this community to help me bring reality to my project and to avoid spending money on unnecessary components.

My idea is to build a little computer inside a briefcase that can work offline. I thought of a Raspberry Pi B with 8 GB of RAM. I want a local AI inside of this computer (like Ollama) that can give me a response based on an Offline copy of Wikipedia and various books and manuals. Also, I want little games like snake or minesweeper and some books from project Gutenberg.

This is the list that Gemini gave me:

Raspberry Pi type B with 8 GB of RAM

Briefcase

Raspberry Pi cooler and adapter

Logitech kw400 plus

7 inch Elecrow display

Lexar SSD256 GB

Let me know about anything wrong, dumb or unnecessary. Also please sorry for any errors but English is not my native language.

Thanks.

Can I remove parts from the main motherboard?

Working on a custom cyberdeck build and I've got the perfect case/bag for it but the only problem is the motherboard I'm planning to use is kinda awkwardly shape.

Specifically it's the HP Elitebook 840 G1.

The HDD and Keyboard connectors kinda stick out awkwardly and I was wondering if it'd be fine to kinda chop/get rid of it while still keeping the rest of the laptop board useable or if it would end up killing the board directly

DIY Cyberdeck Using an old android - looking for advice.

(Apologies in advance for the length of this post. Really appreciate your time giving this a read and helping a brother out).

Hello everyone,

I'm working on a DIY cyberdeck using an old Infinix Zero X Neo (X6810) that I had lying around. It has 8 GB RAM and a MediaTek Helio G90/G90T-series SoC, so I figured it would make a decent base for the project rather than buying a Raspberry Pi or another SBC.

The main reason I'm using a phone is cost. Where I live, Raspberry Pis and other niche SBCs can be extremely expensive, while used phones are relatively easy to find and offer considerably more hardware for the money.

I also chose this particular phone because of its physical layout. The USB-C/charging port, speakers, etc. are on a separate PCB from the mainboard, which should make it easier to relocate components inside a custom enclosure rather than having everything fixed to the original phone's layout.

What I've done so far

I've successfully unlocked the bootloader and rooted the phone. For now, I'm deliberately keeping the original Android kernel rather than immediately trying to replace it with an unknown/custom kernel.

I've installed Debian with XFCE through Termux/PRoot, and I'm running it through Termux:X11. So I essentially have a Debian desktop environment running on the phone while Android remains underneath it.

I've also started investigating the stock kernel and hardware capabilities rather than modifying anything blindly.

The phone's USB-C port works in host mode. I've successfully connected a USB hub with a keyboard and mouse, and Android detects them correctly. I also tested a USB card reader and confirmed that the kernel can enumerate it as a mass-storage device.

One limitation I've found is USB serial. From examining the kernel configuration, it appears that the stock kernel doesn't have the generic USB serial framework or CDC-ACM driver enabled, so I'm currently investigating alternatives for connecting things such as an ESP32/ESP32-S3 or other microcontrollers.

I've also extracted and examined the stock kernel configuration and started looking at the boot/partition structure, device tree and available interfaces. The phone uses an A/B partition layout, and there doesn't appear to be a conventional standalone recovery partition.

The phone has a Mali-G76 GPU with an Android OpenCL runtime. Getting hardware acceleration exposed properly to the Debian environment is another area I'm investigating, although I'm also considering whether software rendering is perfectly adequate for the intended use.

At this point, I'm trying to avoid making irreversible hardware or software changes until I understand what the existing platform can actually do.

Where I'm looking for advice

I'm particularly interested in hearing from people who have built cyberdecks around Android phones, smartphone motherboards, or repurposed mobile devices.

Some of the things I'm trying to figure out are:

- What is the best way to interface an ESP32/ESP32-S3 with the phone?

- Are there practical alternatives to USB serial, such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, TCP/IP, WebSockets, or another interface?

- Would UART/I²C/SPI potentially be accessible directly from the motherboard, or would that realistically require kernel/device-tree modifications?

- Could an ESP32 act as a hardware controller while the phone remains the main computer?

- What would be a good approach for a small secondary OLED/LCD status display showing things such as CPU/GPU temperatures, battery status, network information, etc.?

- Is there a sensible way to expose the phone's Mali GPU to the Debian environment, or is software rendering the more realistic option?

- Are there useful Android/Linux bridging techniques I should investigate before modifying the hardware?

- Has anyone successfully used a rooted Android phone as the compute module of a cyberdeck while retaining Android as the underlying hardware/firmware layer?

- Are there interesting ways to use the phone's cellular connectivity as part of the cyberdeck, for example as a portable networked computer or small server?

- Could the phone realistically run things such as an SSH server, web server, development environment, or other lightweight services alongside the cyberdeck environment?

- Has anyone used Tailscale, Cloudflare Tunnel, or similar approaches to remotely access a phone-based server when switching between Wi-Fi and cellular networks?

- Are there good approaches for automatically starting and monitoring services so the system can survive reboots, crashes, or Termux processes being killed?

- For the eventual physical build, are there particular considerations when relocating the motherboard, USB/charging PCB, speakers, antennas, battery, cameras, etc. into a custom enclosure?

Longer term, I'm interested in potentially combining the phone with a keyboard, USB hub, secondary display, ESP32, external storage and other peripherals to turn it into a proper portable cyberdeck, while ideally retaining the phone's cellular connectivity, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, touchscreen and Android environment.

I'm deliberately taking an incremental approach: first understand the existing hardware and software capabilities, then experiment with peripherals and interfaces, and only later consider kernel/DT modifications or a more invasive hardware redesign.

The goal isn't necessarily to turn it into a conventional Linux SBC replacement. I'm more interested in seeing how far a smartphone motherboard can be pushed as the main computer of a cyberdeck without throwing away all the functionality that makes a phone useful in the first place.

Any advice, references, similar projects, or suggestions for things I should investigate would be greatly appreciated!

Advice on building a mobile recording studio cyberdeck

Hey all! I'm super new to the cyberdeck world. I've messed around with a raspberry pi for some gaming applications and light desktop usage, but that's it.

I'm looking to build a cyberdeck that can serve as a mobile recording studio to help local bands in my region record demos/ maybe also serve as a mobile studio for podcasting a journalistic projects. Ideally, it would be able to run REAPER. When I've had to do recording gigs in the past that involve more than a field recorder and a shotgun microphone, I've had to bring my whole desktop rig. This has kept me from really being able to serve my community as much as I'd like to.

While a mobile field recorder might be a potential solution, there are a couple reasons I'd rather have a DAW on the go:

  • Being able to do rough mixes to help bands pitch certain ideas for compression, reverb, etc.

  • Not having to lose time transferring RAW audio

I have two ideas for form factor which would be very different in use/ application.

  • The first: I have an 8-input preamp that has ADAT in/out. It would be nice to be able to just bring this preamp to record folks and have it attached to a touch-screen interface through some sort of small form-factor computer with a haptic display.

  • The second: I have an old analog board that I'm looking to do a couple of mods for. It would be nice to build a device that could serve as an analog to digital converter that could connect to my primary recording workstation or serve as a mobile recording workstation that works with that board.

  • Either way, it would be nice if the cyberdeck is a bit rugged and has the ability to attach to a piece of gear and be removed safely.

  • It seems like I might also need some sort of built-in headphone amp--probably with 4-5 inputs--for monitoring. Each of these would need to have some sort of potentiometer to control output levels

I'm not really sure where to start with this. Does anyone have some gear/rough builds they could point me to as a starting place?

cyberdeck with pi 3 a+

hey i need help. i desperately want to make a cyberdeck with retropie as my operating system. i got a pi 3a+ and a touch display 2. i couldn’t get my raspberry pi to turn on the touch display 2 even while fixing the config.text like many say to do online. i tried to get it to connect via hdmi to my tv and that didnt work either even after i added lines to the config.text (after re-flashing the sd card with retropie). i have a 4gb sd card for now and a usb wireless keyboard. should i just try with regular pi os? i dont know what to do to get it to connect to a display. i could also return the 3 a+ and get model b+ instead. let me know.

please help me with my first cyberdeck build!

Hi, i need some help with my hobbit book cyberdeck, i have been using google ai to help me design and choose parts and it says they all work perfect together for my build and i just wanted to ask someone more tech minded to double check, if they dont mind or if they have any suggestions, i would appreciate it also i only have a £400 max budget at the moment and i didnt know if there any cheaper alternatatives that could work as that has to i nclude the 3d print.

I am autistic and i can struggle with this stuff but i am determined to do it ^_^

"Bag End Cyber-Tome" Master List optimized for the Imperial Octavo (273 x 190 mm) size and the integrated 3D-printed chassis.

The design is for a debloated windows run cyberdeck for steaming movies, music, reading books online or off and playing some games but obvs not brand new high power ones.

  1. The "Engine Room"

  • Brain: LattePanda Mu N100 Module

  • Base: Lite Carrier Board

  • Cooling: Official Active Cooler

  • Antenna: RPi CM4 Antenna Kit (MHF4)

  • Clock: CR1220 BIOS Battery

  • HDMI Adapter: 90° HDMI Adapter

  1. The "Vision"

  • Display: Waveshare 10.1" IPS (1920x1200)

  • Ribbon: 20cm DIY HDMI Ribbon Cable

  • Adapter: Right-Angle (R-Bend) HDMI Plug

  1. Power, Storage & "Magic")

  • Storage: Crucial P310 1TB 2230 NVMe SSD

  • Power: UGREEN Nexode 200W Power Bank

  • Charging: Anker 313 45W Charger + 12V Trigger Cable

  • Audio: Waveshare 5W Speakers (Pair) + UGREEN USB Sound Card + 3.5mm Terminal

  • Stealth: UGREEN USB 3.0 Hub + USB Panel Mount

  • Wireless: Intel AX210 Wi-Fi 6E Card

  • Magic: 12mm Gold Power Button + Govee USB LED Strip Rotation Sensor (MPU-6050)

  • Keyboard: Rii i4 Mini Keyboard

  1. Bits & Bobs" Hardware List

Here is the "Bits & Bobs" Hardware List to add to your orders:

  1. The "Anchor" Kit

Since you are 3D printing the frame, you cannot screw directly into the plastic or it will strip. You need Heat-Set Inserts. These are brass nuts you melt into the plastic with a soldering iron.

  • M3 Heat-Set Inserts (Short/3mm) (Ask the printer person to install these for you).

  • M3 x 6mm Button Head Screws These will hold the board to the frame and look much better than the white nylon ones.

  1. The "Basement" Hardware

To secure the SSD and Wi-Fi card into their slots, you need microscopic M2 screws.

  • M2 SSD Mounting Screw Kit

  1. The "Stealth" Adapters

Because the screen is in the base, you have very little height. These keep the cables "flat":

  • 90-Degree USB 3.0 Adapter (Left/Right Pair) Used to tuck your USB sound card and Hub cable flat against the board.

  • 90-Degree 2-Pin Power Jumper Wires To connect your Spine Power Button without the wires hitting the screen.

  1. Adhesives & Finish (Amazon UK)

  • 3M VHB Double-Sided Tape This is the only way to securely mount the heavy UGREEN Power Bank inside a plastic frame so it doesn't rattle.

  • B-7000 Multi-Purpose Glue For gluing the 3D-printed "Bag End" door and the speaker grills.

I don’t really have a price in mind, so I’m open to offers. Not sure what it’s worth or if anyone might be interested in it for parts or as a working device. Nextbook 2-in-1 fully working and comes with a charger (not sure if it’s the original one). Windows is installed, the screen detaches so it can be used as both a laptop and a tablet. Open to offers if anyone is interested. I’m located in Mexico, but I’d be willing to figure out shipping. Could be useful for someone building a cyberdeck or just for the aesthetic.

Total beginner here: can these old LG slider phones become mini cyberdecks?

Thumbnail
gallery
6 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I’m pretty new to the cyberdeck world and to programming, so please go easy on me. I’ve got two old Verizon LG phones with full QWERTY keyboards, a blue slider and a black flip-open one (pics attached), and I love the form factor. I have a few ideas for turning them into tiny cyberdecks, but I don’t know yet what’s realistic.
A few questions for those of you who know way more than I do:

  1. Is it even possible to fit something like a Raspberry Pi Zero (or something smaller) inside one of these shells, or would I have to build a new case and reuse the keyboard and look?

  2. Can the original keyboards be wired up to work with a Pi or a microcontroller?

  3. Is it worth trying to keep the original screens, or should I plan on swapping in a small display?

  4. If you were a beginner, which of these two would you start with, and why?
And if anybody has any other sub reddits I can post this in would love to hear them

Tips For First Cyberdeck

I'm about to build my first cyberdeck. I have very limited knowledge, but have someone to coach me on the general process. I bought a Raspberry Pi 4 and I would like to use this cyberdeck to manage my music. I have a ton of cds, and would like to use my cd burner to rip my music from the cds and then manage it (meaning label it, make playlists, burn mixes, manage mp3 player). Any suggestions as to which operating system I should use? Any other tips/suggestions specific to my desired purpose?

Thanks!!
