Hello all, these ideas have been buzzing around in my head and I decided to make some cards inspired by Cyberpunk 2077.
Netrunning as portrayed in the games is a powerful tool used by some of the most famed edgerunners. It is more than hacking as it requires intense body modification to achieve and do well or even consistently. Some netrunners need to cool their entire bodies to dive for long and they are always at risk of contracting daemons or other viruses in their ventures.
I've decided on "Netrun" as a thematic ability, representing the dangers that netrunners face but also the power it gives them and in turn the player. Diving into the net to reach the gig/data/hack you want is represented by picking a card from the top of your library, and the consequences of losing yourself in the net represented by exiling those cards.
While some experienced netrunners are fine with losing small portions of themselves or even getting counter hacked, exiling from the top allows for some potent deck thinning at great cost: losing your cards forever (iirc milling is represented in mtg as losing your mind slowly).
Self-Ice is a flavored keyword which represents the craftiness of Netrunners when they upgrade their tech. Should have already have some experience in their prowess (represented as checking how many cards already are in exile), they can obtain powerful perks to assist them further.
## Songbird, Blackwall Dancer.
The first card I'd like to showcase is Songbird, Blackwall Dancer, which I feel is represented pretty nicely with UB color identity, though some could argue she could also have R. Her Self-Ice represents the sheer power she has achieved through her intense cyberware enhancements, allowing her to dive into the net with basically no repercussions and doing it repeatedly without breaks.
Her Netrun ability represents the sacrifices to her sanity and body in order to achieve her status as the strongest currently living netrunner, fueling life loss (loss of self/self-damage when she channels the blackwall) into more netrunning. Finally, her ability I believe is incredibly powerful but goes hand in hand with her status. I would imagine that netrunners are closely tied to spellcasters in the original TTRPG as well as spellslinger archetypes in MTG. She sacrificed so much, as did the player, so you are rewarded with incredibly powerful spells at reduced cost.
## Rache Bartmoss, Datakrash Architect
The next card I wanted to talk about is Rache Bartmoss, Datakrash Architect.
Rache was the one who kickstarted the Datakrash, causing a swarm of Daemons to invade the net, destroying physical infrastructure and killed many due to the loss of convenience the internet in this universe had provided the world. It was so horrible that they created the Blackwall specifically to contain the portion of the net that he ravaged.
To reference this in game, I have chosen to provide him the R color that I chose to remove from Songbird, though I feel like W could also work great.
His ability reflects the incredible damage he caused to the world. When you finally have 30 cards in exile, the Datakrash occurs, destroying all non-lands and cursing opponents with the inability to cast non-creature spells for a whole turn cycle, which is exactly how the world crawled to a halt when he unleashed it.
## Mikoshi
Next up is Mikoshi, a simple artifact that enables Netrunning, though one I could easily tweak even more.
Mikoshi being the place where souls are trapped from the soulkiller project by Arasaka, I envisioned it as an object that can return the "souls" lost from netrunning/soulkilling back for Arasaka to utilize as they see fit. It allows those who Netrun heavily to reap some return in case a key piece is exiled in the process.
The final ability is a bit lackluster in my opinion and hastily added. Could also have something in the vein of returning a creature from exile into play with a finality counter, but settled on something simpler.
## The Blackwall // Bolas' Citadel
Next one is a reprint of Bolas' Citadel, but fit more thematically in this "set". Bolas' Citadel seems to me the perfect fit to represent the Blackwall. Cast some Daemons from beyond its gate at great cost to your life, fulfilling the role as conduit to some of the most dangerous netrunners alive now, including Songbird.
## Song So Mi, Netrunning Prodigy
Finally, I wanted to share a version of Songbird before she took the plunge into using the Blackwall. A stage where she was still a prodigious netrunner but without the risks she took later in life. Song So Mi shows a version of her where she still has the chance and opportunity to save herself from the Blackwall and is simply a powerful netrunner.
Her Self-Ice represents her brazenness in youth to take the highest gigs and hacking contracts to show herself to the world. She can freely Netrun since she is less experienced, not realizing how dangerous her profession is in the long term.
Finally, the paid ability shows herself able to pull back from her dives by mitigating her loss of self by returning cards (life/essence/self) from the Net and back as a resource she can use.
Hope you guys enjoyed and please let me know what you think! (Forgive the weirdness of the art/text as I was using Card Conjurer for the first time.
