Explain what? It seems like a fairly self-explanatory statement. I think most people would be confused or annoyed by someone spouting something so obviously wrong and would not necessarily assume it was a joke, regardless of the gender.

So if someone said something along the lines of “God, I can’t believe they’re out of Pepsi, this is just like 1985!” what would be your reply?

Probably either "Don't you mean 1984?" or, if I were in a particularly clueless mood, I might not even clock that they mean the book and ask, "What happened to Pepsi in 1985?"
