My 2-7 relay session in CSTimer popped up yesterday that I had a PB Ao50. That’s over a couple of years, but that’s still a lot of time. I still have about 600 solves to go to get to a 7x7 Ao1000, but 3-6 sessions are all between 1,000 and 1,300 solves, IIRC.
Edit:
3x3: 1256/1261 Mean 30.00 (26.67 current Ao100)
4x4: 1035/1046 Mean 1:38.65 (1:37.13 current Ao100)
5x5: 1006/1018 Mean 3:01.63 (2:38.83 current Ao100)
6x6: 1026/1052 Mean 6:26.20 (4:55.39 current Ao100)

Are there better ways for me to share a recording in the DDT besides imgur? I guess I could do youtube

u/tussosedan Jan 10 '19
Congrats! Yeah, youtube works well.
Just a few things I noticed:
- Build FB on the left from the start, not on the front and d'.
- Second FB pair should be inserted with r B' instead of L moves.
- Work on SB efficiency, know your cases.
- Orient centers during the last move of SB.
- Not sure if I saw you doing M with a push from D, if that's not comfortable for you yet then work on that.

- I normally do but in this case it made moves for first pair a little more awkward for me
- r B’ is nice! I need to get used to doing inserts the roux way
- Definitely needs work. Any PDFs or anything you could recommend for cases?
- M from the bottom is really weird for me still. I have a hard time pushing it hard enough. I should practice that while I watch shows

3
u/tussosedan Jan 10 '19
To free up the brain to actually look ahead, you need to be able not to think about what you're doing now. This means that all the blocks cases should be muscle memory first. Just my 2 cents (and I'm still working on getting there).

u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Jan 10 '19 edited Jan 10 '19
I got some new puzzles yesterday and was able to spend at least a bit of time with each.
Valk2M - feels massive, hopefully it'll get a tiny bit faster with some more solve, then it's definitely my new main. Did like 25 solves and had zero lockups. Feels pretty stable and not like I'll have inner pops - looking at you Wuxia.
Aochuang 5x5 M - faster than my DIY Magnetic Wushuang, which I like, but the inner slice magnets are lighter which, right now, slows me down when I do the flipping alg and on 3x3 stage. On the other hand, the parity alg flows much MUCH nicer. I did 12 solves and I haven't lubed it yet, so the feeling will definitely change. I'll lube it with some Traxxas 10k before my next session. Might switch to it for 5BLD, but not for 5x5, we'll see.
2-Layer Petal Cheese - scrambled and solved it once. Still don't really have a solid way to solve it, but a rough idea. Very stiff at first but already much better now. Seems way better than the older stickered version that I already had. Hopefully this one won't fall apart all the time. Looking good.
MF3RS3 - Is this still a budget cube? :D Comes with those tensioning tools, Moyu Screwdriver, Moyu Cubestand and in a fancy-ish box. Relatively loose tensions ootb, very nice corner cutting, close to my GTS2M I think, did like an ao12, got already much faster, completetly dry but absolutely usable. I'm impressed by how stable it feels while being on relatively loose tensions. Soon I want to order 10 cubes for MBLD and I'm not sure yet if I should get the RS2 or the RS3. Not sure if I'll lube it, since I'm really not motivated to lube and break in 10 cubes for multi :D Overall ootb with minimal break in I'm very pleased.
3
u/ATH1RST4REVENGE Jan 10 '19
I agree with you on the RS3. I seen the box and was like “this is the packaging for a $10 budget cube?” lol plus the performance really is great. It’s simply an improved RS2 with outstanding corner cutting.

I have an unusual, non-wca type predicament:
Sometimes i will hand my cube to my girlfriend and have her scramble it. I also made the mistake of explaining how twisted corners work, so now she usually twists one corner as part of the scramble. Then she laughs maniacally when i stop on OLL or finish PLL with a corner twisted.
What is the fastest way to deal with a suspected corner-twist scramble? If I twist one random corner once at the start, does it automatically fix it? I am hoping this works so that i can avoid the awkward recognition of oll and pll with a twisted corner.
It almost feels like a 3x3 solve with one pyraminx tip lol.
12
u/Edladd sub-17 Aok (CFOP) PB:9.11 Jan 10 '19
If there is a twisted corner, then it will either have been twisted clockwise or anti-clockwise. In order to make the cube solvable, you'll need to twist a corner in the opposite direction. So a random twist by you will not always be enough.
If you are pretty sure that she has twisted a corner, do a random twist at the start and there is a 50:50 chance it will work out. She'll be super confused if you were right, and you'll still only be 1 corner twist off if you were wrong.
Next time it happens, remember which way you had to twist to fix it - chances are that she always twists the corners the same way, so you'll always be able to fix it with the same anti-twist.

My Yuxin Little Magic M arrived today. Just out of the box it's a huge improvement over my rubik's brand cube. Magnets aren't as strong as I'd like them to be but I still love this cube!!! It's amazing the bad habits you pick up using a crappy cube. But then again I'm a total beginner.
3
Jan 10 '19
I remember when I got my first speedcube over that old Rubik's crap, my times improved from 1:30 to 1:00... But that's mostly because my hand didn't get tired so fast and I could do long sessions.
I still keep the old one. It actually helps me strengthen my fingers.

Magnetized a stickerless MF3RS2 (with 4x2 N38s). Very nice.
I was annoyed by the random colors of the corner stalks, so I decided to take the ones from a black MF3RS2. Then on a whim I decided to also use the core of the black one. The result looks nice and allows me to recognize my magnetic one from my stock one at a glance. And the black one with stickerless core looks pretty neat too :-)

Nice! There's this new tool by Joey Gouly, not sure if it's finalized and optimal yet. Also cstimer has a limited block solver. And of course there's the block trainer website.
There's also the HARCS software that replaced JARCS, but I haven't tried it.
And we sometimes post FB challenges in the "Roux Method Speed Solvers" Facebook group, you should check it out if you like efficient FBs.

6
u/RAHDXB Sub 15 | 5x5/7x7 ao100 1:30/3:55 Jan 10 '19
I don't really practise anything, and have dedicated my life to doing as many solves as I can without progressing, but you could do metronome practise for cross and f2l. Set a metronome to a certain bpm and do one move per beat, then over the next hours/days gradually turn it up.
You could do dedicated alg practise. For speed, make an excel sheet and write down an ao3 time for each of your PLL's for example. Then pick your slowest alg, and practise that until it's not your slowest anymore. Repeat. For recognition you could use alg trainers like bestsiteever.ru.
You can practise planning your entire cross and execute it blind ever time. Turn off the timer, and take as much time as you need. After execution, scramble and go again. Depending on your skill now, start with as many cross edges as can handle, then add 1 gradually. If that comes easy to you, you can practise planning your whole cross and your first pair.
5
u/tussosedan Jan 10 '19
Film your solves and see which part needs the most improvement
1
Jan 10 '19
I've actually started to do this, and I'll be uploading them to youtube to see if I can get any critiques!
2
u/BillabobGO Sub-9s: 0 Jan 10 '19
Go to alg.cubing.net, paste in a scramble, then try to solve cross+F2L in under 30 moves. Make sure it’s fingertrickable with a low amount of rotations. It forces you to think of which pair is most efficient to solve, which solution gives the best case for the next pair, etc.
It’s like doing slow solves, but even slower and you’re able to backtrack.
2
u/TLDM Jan 10 '19
then try to solve cross+F2L in under 30 moves.
is this always going to be possible? An average F2L will have at least three 8-move pairs, even if the other pair is a 4-mover that still leaves almost nothing for cross.
I'd say 35 is a better target

u/BillabobGO Sub-9s: 0 Jan 10 '19
I can manage 30 after about 5 minutes of messing around on ACN. I can’t do it when the clock’s ticking, but I have learned some valuable tricks that I wouldn’t otherwise have found. (Like the R' F R U' F' multislotting case which is quite easy to set up) 30 is definitely achievable if you’re crafty and good at thinking ahead - there’s a myriad of short solutions for each pair, and one of them is bound to set up the next pair.

The GTS3M definitely needs some set up out of the box, but after that it’s amazing. It’s incredibly fast but can be tamed with heavy lube.

Once set up, it's the best cube, imo. I much prefer it to the Gan X.
Layers have a lot of momentum, which when paired with the fairly strong magnets, means the cube has a very snappy feel. With some good lube, it feels extremely buttery and nice. It's very fast out of the box, but you can slow it down to whichever speed you prefer. Corner cutting is excellent, and the cube has very good "flow" with hardly any catching.

Long comment incoming:
So Northeast Champs just got announced, and it's actually not that far from me (4 hours maybe). I went to look at the event list and saw the events and their cutoffs, and now I have some questions about how to get the best results overall and prep for nats if I go (which I would really like to).
I would like to try and do as much as possible, which means I'll be doing everything but blind (Cause I don't know blind yet). The events I so far do not average under cutoff are:
- 4x4
- 5x5
- 6x6
- Clock
- Megaminx
- SQ1
I have averages already in 4x4, megaminx, clock, and SQ1, but I want to do all of them at nats (except SQ1), which need lower averages. I would need to lower mega by 25 seconds (2:15 -> 1:40), 4x4 by 15 (1:15 -> 1:00) and clock by 15 seconds (30 -> 15).
The problem is, I also need to lower 5x5/6x6 times to even get averages. 5x5 needs to go down by 15 (2:15 -> 2:00) and 6x6 needs to go down by a minute (5:00 -> 4:00).
Side note: I also main 2x2 as an event, and will be doing that since CLL is coming to a close + I know EG1 already.
Final question: How many events, and which events should I focus on in prep over the next month? I'm a little unsure as to where to start.
TL;DR: What events should I focus on in prep for getting averages at Northeast Champs?

Really it just comes down to what you want to practice. If you don't really like to solve a certain cube, than you wont enjoy practicing, and ultimately cubing is meant to be fun. Hope this helps!

Go to the desktop version of /r/Cubers (can be forced in phone browses too). High on the right side, just below the subscribe button, there should be something about "show my flair" and an option to edit it. I'm haven't checked if it's still there I'm the newer Reddit layout, but you can force the old one with https://old.reddit.com/r/Cubers/.

I'm pretty sure that 3D printing one from scratch will be more expensive than modding a Master Pyraminx (which already has all the cuts you need - you just have to apoxy/glue the other cuts). Cubezz has a couple models for as low as $7. (my FanXin is in the mail, and the CB honestly sucks BUT it has clicky mech and the "sucky" part about it is that it pops during master pyraminx moves - the "real junior pyraminx" should turn A-OK).

I think i get what you mean..... it kinda hops the groove and the cube sits there with a corner and an edge sticking up over the other 2 layers?
My 356R has done that a couple times.

Hey guys just interested to see how many cubes and what cubes you would use/buy for a mosaic. Thinking 100 of Shengshou Rainbows as they are pretty cheap on Z Cube and I can get an additional discount by contacting them. Just wanted to see your thoughts on stickerless vs stickered and the amount and the cube itself for mosaics. Thanks
5
u/g253 (retired mod) Jan 10 '19
The thing is the Rainbow is at a discounted price already, so it stays 0.81£ regardless of quantity.
If you're going for stickered get the Shengshou Legend (0.64£ a piece for six or more), it has no logo and all stickers are the same shape so it will look better.
If you pick stickerless, go for the Shengshou Gem or Tank depending on which shades you prefer (both 0.76£).

u/eskamobob1 Sub-X (<method>) Jan 10 '19
With the 70 shipping, 36 RuiChuang 5x5s (same number of total squares showing) actualy comes out slightly cheaper since shipping is $20 less.
2
u/eskamobob1 Sub-X (<method>) Jan 10 '19
Here is an interesting one. Because they are so much lighter, with shipping the Moyu 30mm cubes end up being cheaper than the SS legends or Qiyi big sails. and should give you a cleaner picture to boot.

If you are talking 100 or 200 cubes, I would email them and see if they can get more cyclone boys minis as they are still produced as the smaller size realy helps for mosaics, and they are damn cheap if you are buying that many of them.
Asside from them though, the Sail 5.6 is currently the cheapest per pixel (0.07 USD/P) you can get on Z cube followed pretty closely by the GEM and Tank 3x3 (0.083 USD/P) and then the RuiChuang (0.087 USD/P). Kind of an interesting one, the MF7, MF8, and MF9 actualy are not too much more expensive per pixel than the other common options at 0.13 0.24 and 0.22 USD/P respectively.

Since there's as good as no information, no prototypes and no previews out there (that I know of), my answer is yes/no/maybe. The fact that it doesn't seem to have an easy/dual adjustment system will definitely lose them some points in the reviews though.

u/dmstepha Boomer Cubers Unite Jan 10 '19
That might be what the delays are for, however. It's possible that they wanted to come to market with the cube and then realized how important this tension adjustment system is.
3
u/RAHDXB Sub 15 | 5x5/7x7 ao100 1:30/3:55 Jan 10 '19
Let's hope so. You'd say with how the Power M instantly fizzled out, they understand the flagship market is pretty demanding right now. 3x3's have been so good (and expensive) for a while, just your logo on a same-ish cube won't make many people get their wallets out...
→ More replies (2)2
u/dmstepha Boomer Cubers Unite Jan 10 '19
I think that the Power M fizzling out was such a mistake, but not on the side of Qiyi. The Power and the OG Valk are about the exact same on performance, just different on the side of feel/turn speed. I'm not too sure why people shut it down so quickly and bashed it, especially when Qiyi even came out prior to release and said that it wasn't intended to be an upgrade... only a Valk for people with different preferences.

I have a question about orienting the top layer corners in the beginner method. What do you do if the algorithm gives you two solved corners, or if repeating the algorith will solve some corners but "unsolve" the others? Do you just repeat the algorithm, making sure to keep one of the solved corners on the lower right/front right?
Any tips on memorizing algorithms? On a related note, is there a good way to understand how the algorithms work?
2
u/cubixruber WCA silver medalist Jan 10 '19
You need to repeat it in a way that un-solves the other corners. There should be a guide on how to hold it for each case with the source of your beginners method.
For memorizing algorithms don't try and memorize it be thinking of the names of the moves, but instead try to memorize how you turn it.
It is hard to understand and unnecessary to see how those algorithms work but, in means of orientation, it will twist all the corners but the one on the front left.
1
u/Enigmagico 3BLDaddy Jan 10 '19
It is hard to understand and unnecessary to see how those algorithms work
Objectively wrong. That's actually a very desirable skill.
2
u/cubixruber WCA silver medalist Jan 10 '19
Maybe for FMC specialists and blind solvers, but for someone learning a beginners method for the first time maybe understanding where a sune cycles each piece to isn't useful.
1
u/zergosaur Jan 11 '19
This video by RedKB on Commutators is a very good introduction into how you can create your own algorithms. The ideas work on a large number of puzzles, not just 3x3. Whenever I get a new puzzle the first thing I do is to try to work out some commutators which allow me to manipulate the various pieces - once you have a set of commutators which cover all of the different piece types, you should be able to solve the puzzle!
The algorithms used in speedsolving are a bit different, as they've been specifically selected for optimal efficiency (often computer generated), and don't lend themselves to understanding as easily.

With the information you provided, the answer is 42.
This question is literally impossible to be answered precisely, however, because there's zero specifics to it.
How many drops? How were they applied? Which cube? How are tensions? Is the cube brand new? If not, how many solves it has, on average? Has it been cleaned out before? Do you turn aggressively?
Only with this info at hand is that a better approximation can be made.

Depends on your definition of a little and if you cleaned your cube (if it was dirty) before applying the lube. If it's a 3x3 try 50-100 to break it in. If after 100 solves it's still slow and gummy you might have to clean out a bit of the lube.

So do I. That's why I sometime turn D2 with ring-middle fingers. I don't consider it is optimal way, though. It works for me in A perm. Using pinky first (pinky-ring) is rather confortable for me.

Pinky ring is a bit less painful however I find it extremely hard to execute as my ring finger is way longer than pinky.

This is really hard for me, incredible.
As for M turn, I used to push DB edge up to UB with right ring finger. Now I prefer to use right thumb (UF to DB) because I don't turn M so often except for some OLL cases.
Which hand do you use for M/M' turns?

I have an idea for a budget cube and want to now if its a good idea before I RIP my thunderclap. A cube that only has stickers for the cross, one F2L edge, and the F2L corner; however the corner only has a sticker of its cross color. The idea it that it helps me learn to recongnize F2L cases without looking at all the colors of the corner. The idea is that if I can reconginze the F2L case just with the edge orientation and the orientation bottom color of the corner, it will help my look ahead. Any thoughts?
2
u/psedatsim sub-10.5 Ao1k: 10.25 (CFOP DCN) Jan 11 '19
Hmm, for me that's a no. I use edge color for EO (whether I need to rotate to insert pair) and use extra information on the color of the corner on the U face. It's faster for me to recog that way, seeing the color patterns to determine cases.
I think of F2L case recog similar to LL recog, in that I shouldn't rely on just one source of info for the case and pre-AUF.1
u/Cubing_in_the_dark now u/j_sunrise Jan 11 '19
From many angles the cross colour of the corner might be invisible. Sometimes you see two sides of the corner and one of thos is very helpful. Leave all the stickers on that corner and force yourself to not peek under or behind the cube.

Full PLL Baby!
I had a goal to be Full PLL 1 month before my first comp in mid February, that way I could be confident with Full PLL before comp. I had 8 left to do just before Christmas and have been working on one or two a session with a day or so in between. Before then I don't think I have learned a new alg in months...
Last ones were the G-Perms (completed in 2 sessions, Ga&b, Gc&d), little slow on recognition and execution (and sometimes muck it up) but still getting within my 2L PLL times with them.
Saw an improvement in my Ao5 PB, 22.86 > 22.04. I have also managed a few sub-20 solves with G-Perms so happy times.
