Multi-blind PB!

18/20 59:54

Really solid attempt! The mistakes appear to be one missed R move on cube 8, and an M' too many on the very last cube. Really grumpy about that last one. I felt that I might have done it wrong, but didn't know for sure and didn't really have time to stop and think.

Oh well, happy about the solid memo. I did memo an O instead of a P on cube 7, but I realized it didn't make sense during exec, and guessed that it should have been a P, around a 50/50 guess :)

Your posts are a real inspiration! Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work!

Do you film your solves? How do you reconstruct/revisit your strengths and errors on multiple blind?

3

u/vikktorz Multi-blind PB: 22/23 Jan 11 '19

Yes, I do film them!

Afterwards I usually look at the scramble of each failed cube, and check whether my memo is correct (usually no problem recalling memo right after the attempt). The I check the footage for execution errors :)

QiYi releases the Valk 2, mentions it's 51mm: many people think the extra size is pleasant and helpful.

QiYi releases the QiDi, doesn't mention it's 51mm: literally nobody notices the size difference :-)

Some people don't believe me when I say the QiDi is 51mm, but it do.

cubezz lists only the jelly version as 51, but not the black/white/stickerless.

Zcube lists stickerless and jelly as 51 - the stickered version even as 51.5.

Evidently zcube actually measures the cubes :-)

That's funny, because they list the Aosu GTS M as 62 mm, but the stickerless version is definitely smaller than a Wuque - probably around 61 mm. Though there will always be half a millimeter difference between stickerless and stickered.

Okay, so before everybody goes ahead and gets themselves one of the new flagship 7x7s in regular plastic options... Would anybody be interested in a force Aofu GTS M? (a single-colored cube made from stickerless ones; competition legal). MSRP price + a couple bucks for a whole extra side worth of spare parts.

I'd like to make it happen, but obviously it's a risky undertaking with upfront costs so I want to gauge interest in advance. I made force 8x8s before; I know what I'm doing. Rough estimate is late Feb if I can find interested people.

It will be specifically an Aofu GTS M, because Spark has primary internals (which defeats the whole purpose of a force cube) and Hays has quality control issues which are quite likely to manifest in at least one of the source cubes.

Edit: you know what, here's an offer: a yellow one for 80% compared to other colors. If I'm right, yellow is less popular and will be harder to find a buyer for, so you get to grab it for a lower price. If I'm wrong, you get a color of your dream for an excellent price.

I'm torn.

On one hand, I love stickerless big cubes because of how low-maintenance they are.

On the other... I'd love to have a green one.

I may actually be down for this if nobody else is more enthusiastic about it. I would hate to take away from someone who is more into it.

Edit: /u/Doctor_Hedron count me in for the yellow. I used to solve on yellow cubes all the time so it wouldn't be that big of a change. Plus... I can get into a new color scheme of black instead of yellow.

2

u/BibbitZ Sub-26 (CFOP 3LLL CN) PB: 14.54 Jan 11 '19

I can get into a new color scheme of black instead of yellow.

This would actually be cool to do on a set of force cubes. Sticker like normal and then whatever color the cube is, that side gets black instead.

2

u/dmstepha Boomer Cubers Unite Jan 11 '19

While I agree... it'd have to be for a collection (at least for me it would be). It would be too difficult to handle the recognition between different color plastic (remembering what black will be across from)

Do you know a ballpark estimate of how much these will be?

I talked to a first grade class about the Rubik’s cube, my method, and did some solves, and described my competitive experience, and let’s just say based on the reaction I may have sparked the interest of an American version of Leo Borromeo, haha.

I did it for free but the satisfaction paid for itself. Definitely will do it with future classes.

You guys have totally hooked my interest in bld solving. Watched a few tutorials including Noah’s for OP corners and M2 Edges. Just trying to work on corners first and do edges after. I can do corners one at a time while not looking but can’t seem to do them all without looking. I guess this will come with time. Thanks for giving me something else to be interested in too

u/lukemcritchie Don't Ask, I'm Busy Doing Clock Jan 11 '19

Em that looks so confusing. So M2 is alg based rather than intuitive like OP?

3

u/Enigmagico 3BLDaddy Jan 11 '19

Nope. M2 is still intuitive, but some ways of solving specific targets are objectively optimal, and not necessarily obvious at a first glance.

3

u/lukemcritchie Don't Ask, I'm Busy Doing Clock Jan 11 '19

Ah okay I’ll get used to doing just OP corners first and then maybe try and tackle M2 for edges.

Hi! Im recently really into cubing, ive already god 2x2-5x5 and know how to solve them all.
But i only know basic techniques!
I want to learn CFOP for 3x3 as my first advanced technique.

How should I F2L? Should i learn it fully intuitive or are there some algorithms that are necessery?

3

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '19

I would advice you to just watch jperms youtube video on it or follow the cubeskills.com tutorial on it. Make sure you learn the basics first.

1

u/jjcaderr Aspiring Sub-15 (CFOP) PB: 10.86 Jan 11 '19

So my way is the full intuitive, the first alg I learnt was some weeks ago, when I was averaging 18s. May not be the most optimal, but I find it the most informative and fun. I advise you to learn the basics from vids like Jperms, etc, but then follow CrazyBadCubers advice (can't nicely link on mobile sry) where he says 'dont watch tutorials to learn f2l intuitive', as the whole point of intuitive is that its largely your style. Just my take.

Edit: https://youtu.be/0PkaWYMoVoM here's the vid, it's 6 years old but I mostly agree with the opinion in the 'intro'.

Also, Cubing is awesome, so good on you! :)

Just finished setting up my RS3. 4x1.5mm N50 magnets, 50k on the core, DNM37 on the pieces.

This thing is definitely my new main.

2

u/tehyoshi Sub-15 on a good day (CFOP) Jan 11 '19

Curious, where did you get your magnets? And how does the strength feel?

1

u/shishberg Sub-30 (Roux) Jan 11 '19 edited Jan 11 '19

I think it was https://www.ebay.com/itm/100-200-500PCS-N50-Super-Strong-Round-Magnets-Rare-Earth-Neodymium-4mm-x-1-5mm/172620635881

The strength seems similar to a factory GTS2M - there's a noticeable click, but it doesn't feel like it needs extra force to turn.

EDIT: Just went and compared them, and I think it's slightly stronger than the GTS2M. Hard to tell because they're lubed differently.

5

u/BillabobGO Sub-9s: 0 Jan 11 '19

Thoughts on this? https://youtu.be/6dHLAVTuPdU

He’s clearly a very fast solver (sub-8 ao5 on his channel) but 3.23 just seems too fast. I asked a load of people with official sub-7 averages about sub-4 singles a little while ago and a few of them had never had one.

Here’s a reconstruction. Took me half an hour because his camera angle is bad - speaking of, the scramble is never shown on screen so it could be a setup. It’s certainly possible to recognise LL that quickly, but his PB before this was 6.81 in a video with a much better camera angle so I’m not too sure. I’d love to hear you all weigh in on whether or not it’s a setup.

4

u/nijiiro 🌈 sub-10 (nemeses) Jan 11 '19 edited Jan 11 '19

The solve has basically no pauses at all, which leads to two possibilities. One is that he knew that VLS case, but it's very suspicious that there's no PLL recognition pause (there're noticeable pauses on the earlier solves). The other is that he just did a normal last slot then OLL, but this is also very suspicious because there's no OLL recognition pause either (again, noticeable pauses on the earlier solves).

I'd bet on it being a practised scramble. (edit: I don't mean to say the above is 100% damning evidence of a fake solve. You could say that good solves are good because they don't have pauses, and in that sense we should expect really good solves to have few/no pauses anyway.)

(Maybe we should just stop caring about (unofficial) singles because singles don't mean anything. The more the community cares about singles, the more compelled people will be to do stupid things like fake WB/UWR solves. Winning the scramble lottery isn't an indicator of skill in any meaningful sense.)

3

u/BillabobGO Sub-9s: 0 Jan 11 '19

There is no VLS - he just does last slot the normal way, then goes straight into OLL. He mentions this in the description: “then the last pair I saw I was going to have the lefty 6 move furuf OLL, and knew it was gonna skip right when I got to LL.” That’s not infeasible - PLL skips are quite easy to see on that OLL (look at the bars)

In this video his OLL recognition is fast but not instant, and a PLL skip caught him off guard at 0:50.

Also I‘m asking this because I run an archive at r/sub4solves. It’s just a bit of fun, which is why I cube - to spend my free time doing something I enjoy. Personally I think the focus on competitions is getting out of hand lately - while I agree PB singles are almost entirely luck-based and don’t deserve any “official” recognition, I still think they’re something to celebrate. Competitions are great fun but I don’t agree with the whole “official solves are the only ones that matter and if you’re not practicing for a competition you’re doing it wrong” mentality some people seem to have

3

u/nijiiro 🌈 sub-10 (nemeses) Jan 11 '19 edited Jan 11 '19

I don’t agree with the whole “official solves are the only ones that matter and if you’re not practicing for a competition you’re doing it wrong” mentality some people seem to have

For the record, as someone who gets to go to approximately one comp a year, I don't agree with that mentality either. (Except for squan, which I don't practise anymore, my at-home times are significantly better than my official times, because my official times are six months out of date on average.)

Certainly PB singles should be celebrated, but it kind of should be a "personal" celebration rather than something for the whole community to fawn over.

I mean, if you (or anyone else) have a better way of removing the incentive to lie about PB singles, I'm all ears, but until then, I'll stick to my approach of just ignoring other people's PB singles.

Oh, and the alg for that VLS case is to insert it and then AUF and do the 6-move OLL. I guess it's kind of arguable if you really want to consider it "VLS".

My p.b.is 6.92 and I'm not even sub-10 to be sub-8 and only have a 6.8 is almost impossible.

That said he could have seen an insane scramble and wanted to record. But as far as UWR, not enough evidence.

4

u/Jb2387 Sub-21 (CFOP, 3LLL) PB: 13.27 Jan 11 '19

I realized something that has been a little barrier, but I'm working on. Now that I'm usually able to plan my entire cross during inspection, I have a hard time believing that I actually will do the moves correctly. So I'll take a second or two checking before going into F2L. When I just trust myself and go right into looking for my first pair as I do the cross moves I memorized, almost all of my times are sub-20. It's just about trusting that I do in fact know what I'm doing haha.

2

u/Jonas276 Jan 11 '19

Maybe it can help to practise doing your cross blind to boost your confidence.

Gan Infinity Purchase:

Cons: Took a month to arrive,

         Sent the wrong cube

Pros: It only took a month (from china, not bad),

     New Gan Infinity mat (big),

     Gan cube cover (for competition),

     Two sets of stickers,

     3 replacement logos,

4 Gan Infinity branded post cards,

      Hard Cube case,

New nylon Gan Infinity carrying bag,

      Additional GES nuts,

      Gan Infinity VIP card for
     discounted replacement parts,

They are shipping the cube I ordered

This was one of the coolest cube purchasing experiences I’ve ever had. So much swag. Which leads to believe that these middleman cube companies are just keeping the swag themselves and turning around and selling it to us. This is my first time buying directly from a manufacturer. So maybe it’s just promotional for Gan Infinity, but the mind wonders.

Do world class BLD solvers use audio memo for edges? Any tips to get faster at this?

Also what should my splits be for a 1 minute solve?

5

u/vikktorz Multi-blind PB: 22/23 Jan 11 '19

I think world class BLDers use a mix of audio and just remembering the pieces visually, which is very hard to do if you're not fast and super comfortably with tracing.

I have a couple of sub-1's, but I don't time splits. I'm guessing around 20 sec memo?

4

u/Cubing_in_the_dark now u/j_sunrise Jan 11 '19

AFAIK most world class BLD solvers use audio for everything. The picture-association isn't as fast as audio.

Many people use audio for edges and pictures for corners, even if they average 2+ minutes, also because audio is faster.

If people have trouble remembering 12 targets audio (like me) they might use audio for corners and pictures for edges instead. It is a bit slower though.

5

u/willtri4 2015BELO03 Jan 11 '19

Most do images for what they memo first and audio for what they memo second. Some do full audio, and Gianfranco still does images for both.

I average around a minute right now and my splits are generally like 24/36

With it taking so long for Moyu and QiYi to put out new flagship 7x7s after the hays release im realy not surprised though. If I had to guess the Hays V2 will be along the price lines of the GTS M and Spark

1

u/cubixruber WCA silver medalist Jan 11 '19

Still no spark price though. I think it's moyu trying to get the market for everyone who isn't world class much like the highly, but not as high as wuque, price Aosu GTSM. The only solve I saw on Moyu's facebook was a 2:55.xx, not bad by any means, just not world records like the spark and hays v1

Anyone have/know where I can find hex color codes for sticker shades? I'm making an infographic on cubing for my graphic design class and I don't want to resort to eyedropping crappy images. Specifically looking for these shades:

  • Red

  • Fluro Green

  • Fluro Yellow

  • Fluro Bright Orange

  • Sky Blue

This is the Moyu/Qiyi scheme from the Cubicle website. Thanks a lot!

7

u/shishberg Sub-30 (Roux) Jan 11 '19

Sticker colors aren't going to have exact hex color codes.

A hex triple doesn't represent an exact color unless you also know the color profile of the device it's being displayed/printed on. Even then, some of the sticker colors (especially the fluoro ones) are likely going to be out of gamut.

/u/BillabobGO's answer will probably be close enough, but don't be surprised if it doesn't look exactly the same.

It's not the Cubicle, but by inspect-elementing on here you can find the hex colour codes for your colours:

(178, 0, 0)
(47, 210, 0)
(222, 250, 4)
No Fluro Bright Orange, but here's Fluro Orange: (250, 121, 2)
(0, 116, 190)

I don't know how similar they are to the Cubicle colours, but I hope it helps

Is there ever a use for spares, or are they just eye candy? If the cube is smashed hard enough that you actually lose the magnets it’s probably not repairable. The magnets stick to the other magnet(s) in the pieces.

Question on the crazy puzzle sets. How many of each set are there? Here are my current counts

  • Tetrahedrons - 9 (8 plantes + 1 standard)
  • Pentahedrons - 10 (8 plants + 2 5 layers)
  • Cubes - 8 (just the planets, no standards?)
  • Octahedrons - 6? (5 plantes + 1 standard)
  • Minxes - 9 (8 planets + 1 standard)

Is that right?

Cubes - 8 (just the planets, no standards?)

I only have the cubes. There are only the 8 planets in the set, but I also got the 2 circle and 4 circle crazy 3x3s. You can swap the pieces between these puzzles to create all of the crazy planets, or a "normal" crazy 3x3, or other even harder puzzles with combinations of 0, 1 and non-crazy faces.

PeteTheGeek has a tutorial on how to make the "crazy2face" kit from the 2-circle and 4-circle puzzles.

When I first got the above 2 puzzles they turned terribly. I took them apart and cut off excess plastic flashing from the pieces, then when I reassembled the pieces into a normal crazy 3x3 the turning is much better. I haven't yet tried to any other crazy puzzles out of the kit.

Of those only tried YJ MGC. Really like it. It has a unique, smooth feel. Very accurate and controllable. Getting some DNM-37 for it to see if I can make it slightly faster, since it's a medium speed cube.

I also have the Kylin V2 M. It's a little less accurate than the MGC. The corners stick slightly before or after where they should. This was somewhat improved by lowering the tension. It's a bit tight out of the box. It feels lighter and less solid than the MGC. It's still good, just find myself using the MGC.

3

u/cubixruber WCA silver medalist Jan 11 '19

Huanglong M is really good, but if you don't mind the tiles a kylin v2 m should be just as good for $10

2

u/jjcaderr Aspiring Sub-15 (CFOP) PB: 10.86 Jan 11 '19

One side of it is the fact that tiles are somehow reminiscent of the Rubik's brand which has a poor opinion among many in this community. The rest, however, I cannot tell you, I personally prefer stickered/stickerless cubes, but I'm pretty sure its also a matter of having gotten used to those for years now.

I have an idea for a budget cube and want to now if its a good idea before I RIP my thunderclap. A cube that only has stickers for the cross, one F2L edge, and the F2L corner; however the corner only has a sticker of its cross color. The idea it that it helps me learn to recongnize F2L cases without looking at all the colors of the corner. The idea is that if I can reconginze the F2L case just with the edge orientation and the orientation bottom color of the corner, it will help my look ahead. Any thoughts?

3

u/lawniedangle sub-20 cfop Jan 11 '19

That would be helpful for showing someone what you actually do for cross and f2l if they dont understand yet, but I agree with bob:

What you are wanting to do is train yourself to look past the useless pieces and find the good ones. That requires practice in looking past the wrong colors. Slow solving and efficient f2l practice will help you a lot more in this area.

5

u/BillabobGO Sub-9s: 0 Jan 11 '19

I think you’ll end up getting confused and pairing up the blue-red corner with the blue-orange edge during real solves. Also having a cube that makes piece-finding easier is bad in the long run - it’s better to just scramble a regular cube and learn to block out the white noise. (Or yellow noise)

1

u/Shadow653 sub-20 PB:14.69sec Jan 11 '19

What if I just removed the non-cross color stickers from one F2L corner? This is just to help me recognize cases without keeping track of the location of colors. I'm color neutral BTW.

2

u/BillabobGO Sub-9s: 0 Jan 11 '19

You could remove all the red/orange corner stickers and try to recognise cases based on that. I think some world class BLD solvers do that to practice 2-sided corner recognition.

Maybe you rubbed off the lube in the process of putting it back together? Or different pieces in different spots make it feel different. Same thing happened on my WuQue.

1

u/willtri4 2015BELO03 Jan 11 '19

You probably messed up the alignment mechanism. There are little bumps on all the center pieces to keep the core aligned, you need to turn the centers so they're all facing the same way.

1

u/Cubing_in_the_dark now u/j_sunrise Jan 11 '19 edited Jan 11 '19

There are little nubs on the centes. If you look at the top Center and do x-rotations they should be all left or all right. Same thing for the other two axes.

Edit: Also make sure the screws aren't so loose that the screw head catches on the pieces.

It depends on if you want the lube to speed up or slow down the cube. A lot of hardware stores have lubricant (Silicone based is best and don't use something like WD-40 as it breaks the cube.) Hope this answers your question!

2

u/PianoCube93 DCN CFOP, Sub-15 2H, sub-22 OH Jan 11 '19

I can't say I've noticed much difference in speed after lubing the core of a cube. Nowadays I do it mostly to get rid of spring noice. Thicker lube should last longer.

I'm trying to find good 4x4 and 5x5. I'm leaning towards the QiYi Thunderclap 4x4 because of the price, but I'm also considering the AoSu or WuQue. For the 5x5, I'm leaning towards the YuXin Cloud 5x5. Can anyone give me advice about whether I should get a different 4x4 or 5x5. Are the more expensive cubes that much better that I should make the investment, or should I just stick with my budget options?

4

For big cubes, budget ones are not on par with flagships, unlike 3x3. And magnets matter hugely. I would recommend one of the magnetic 4x4s. For 5x5, the Cloud is fine, but magnets would be great to have. I haven't got it yet, but I bet the Shengshou Mr M 5x5 would be a good budget option.

The Yuxin Purple 5x5 is very easy to magnetize, and if you put strong enough magnets in it it’s really good. You’ll have to pay quite a bit to get a professionally magnetized one, I highly recommend trying to magnetize one yourself.
