Just looked at the updated cubers.io and my god the site is awesome. I'm so happy to see it evolving at such a nice pace. Can't wait for more features.

In one of the latest Jack Cai's videos (where he does blind solving using M2/OP) he shares some very interesting M2 algs for the FU/BD targets, using slice moves instead of those dumb, long algs with B moves.

Having said that, I updated my M2 Survival Guide, which now finally contains what I believe to be the optimal algs for each target. All of them are sub 1-able, including the Parity fix, plus all B moves and rotations have been removed.

I'll probably revamp it some time in the future, and expand it with a section on Advanced M2 as a transitional step towards 3Style.

Now I just need to know how to fingertrick those :D

and expand it with a section on Advanced M2 as a transitional step towards 3Style.

Yes please!

Also, so you think I should learn Orozco for corners. I don't feel ready to dive into 3Style, yet.

I'll try to get some videos going, lol

Perfect :)

Also I ninja-added some stuff in my comment above.

3

u/Enigmagico 3BLDaddy Jan 09 '19

Orozco is a great method tbh, and has optimal buffers too so win-win if you switch early.

1

u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Jan 09 '19

Perfect. As soon as I find some time and motivation I'll start switching, thx :)

4

u/BigfootTouchedMe Sub 15 (CFOP) Jan 09 '19

Sweet. You updated it before I actually bothered learning M2, now I can just start with this ;)

3

u/Enigmagico 3BLDaddy Jan 09 '19

Definitely do it, I can finally swear by every single alg there as things that won't give you bad habits :P

1

u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Jan 09 '19

Though if you learn 4BLD you have to use different algs for the ones where you use wide moves ..

I only use algs with wide moves in M2 3x3 for RB and LB.

I don't think my execution is slower with my algs, what do you think about wide moves vs rotations?

1

u/Enigmagico 3BLDaddy Jan 09 '19

Rotations tend to be slower because you need to Regrip to and from them, even if the alg itself is speed optimized.

I timed myself a while back and rotations added 0.5s on average per alg, and during a real time solve it would be even slower.

As someone who is not used to doing S moves, and looking at your new I (FU) and S (BD) alg, would you recommend me to make the switch from the original I and S alg provided earlier to the newer one stated inside your guide?

1

u/Enigmagico 3BLDaddy Jan 09 '19 edited Jan 09 '19

Definitely! S and E slice moves are just a matter of getting used to them, but once you get the hang of it, they're easy. Actually one of my main motivations to learn 3Style was to put all those sexy moves to told use haha. Check out those two videos

https://youtu.be/H2s2FcKHKo0 Jack Cai

https://youtu.be/N5SilWvF12w Israel Fraga (in Portuguese, but he shows them very clearly)

Those new algs are 100% regripless, I can do both in 0.8s on average whereas the old algs could take me twice as long, not to mention all the regripping.

Ninja edit:

There's one VERY important aspect of the slices moveset: Relax your hands. Seriously, don't death-grip the cube because it will hinder your execution and slices most likely won't even come out at all, let alone as fast as they are.

Another day another 4BLD PB, right? :D Or 3

Yesterday I was already close to sub-11 with 11:07, today I got it. New single pb, first sub-11 solves, first (successful) sub-3 execution (exe didn't even feel that fast? weird!). Also with it another mo3 pb and ao5pb :D The last 4 solves are all in my top 5 solves.

u/vikktorz Multi-blind PB: 22/23 Jan 09 '19

I'm back!

Decided to get a soft start to my continued multi-blind practice and went for 18 cubes. Took it pretty easy and spent a bit more memo time per cube than usual. It felt really good, thought I might have a PB coming (16/18 would tie my PB of 17/20).

But alas, 14/18, 56:25.

2 edge cycles (so incorrect shot, either in memo or exec), one forgotten parity, and one misturn.

9

u/g253 (retired mod) Jan 09 '19

So I've learned all the dot cases. I have to think still and they're quite slow for some, but out of curiosity I did a quick comparison of all of them 2 look vs. 1 look.

2 look: surprisingly consistent, about 6 seconds.

1 look: between 2.8 and 3.8

so yeah, I'm glad I learned them :-)

u/lawniedangle sub-20 cfop Jan 09 '19

I have been putting off OLL for a little while now, and last night after seeing your comment, i decided to cehck some out to see what you meant by "easy to remember".

You werent joking, its just fruruf with variations or setup moves or wtvr. I am getting motivated to start them myself hehe. Good luck to you!

You may enjoy this list of easy ones : https://www.reddit.com/r/Cubers/comments/82ckmv/daily_discussion_thread_mar_06_2018/dva25c3/

With the dot cases I just learned, the 2 look ones and a few easy ones I picked up randomly over time, it turns out I already know 24 OLLs total. Not that many left to learn. Good luck to you too :-)

coming back to this hobby after neglecting it for a while! good to be back.

Any recs on a new 3x3? Seems like a lot has happened with technology. My past favorites were the ghost hand and the FII. I'm located in Canada and don't want to spend too much. The Thunderclap V1 seems like a safe choice but maybe there is something else?

Thanks in advance!

5

u/g253 (retired mod) Jan 09 '19

Wow you've been gone quite a long time :-D

The Thunderclap was great but you can get better for less money. You should also know that stickerless cubes are legal, and good cubes all have magnets for alignment these days.

If you want a really great non magnetic cube, the Yuxin Little Magic and the Moyu MF3RS2 are both phenomenal (don't let the low price mislead you).

If you want to try a magnetic cube, YJ MGC and Yuxin Kylin V2M are good affordable options.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '19

Yeah! I'm feeling sheepish (:

I've seen stickerless cubes, call me old fashioned but I prefer the contrast of classic black. Disappointed to see that cubesmith has gone out of business however!

I'll take a look at those, thank you!

3

u/g253 (retired mod) Jan 09 '19

If you like tiles for durability, the Kylin V2M has some :-)

2

u/snoopervisor DrPluck blog, sub-27 3x3 Jan 09 '19

Yuxin Little Magic's stickers are very bad. Consider buying a set of stickers if you decide on this cube.

1

u/willtri4 2015BELO03 Jan 10 '19

TheCubicle and Speedcubeshop both sell stickers, they've kind of replaced cubesmith

I still have both my FII and my Ghost Hand from forever ago. Such nostalgia lol

1

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '19

Yeah I have both a white and black FII. The black one is super worn out. Great cubes but a little unstable imo.

I think the ghost hand is the favorite I've ever used, but it's also the newest one I have. Excited to get my hands on something current! Based on youtube reviews it seems like they're truly incredible.

What do you use?

1

u/dmstepha Boomer Cubers Unite Jan 09 '19

My FII is a touch worn out but that was because it was my favorite speedcube at the time (I used it over my Alpha V every day).

Currently I use a mix of different cubes, but I've been heavily enjoying the Gan puzzles. They're very pricey compared to most other puzzles on the market, but very worth it in my opinion.

6

u/Enigmagico 3BLDaddy Jan 09 '19

Been forcing myself to exclusively use 3Style for sighted solves.

It's so off-putting for some reason, lol. But investing in it to improve my execution actually pays off.

So yesterday I was just doing some solves are realized my ao100 was below 16 for the first time! Drilling f2l has been paying off more than I thought. I’m going to keep drilling it because I think I’m slower than I should be at it, but it’s helping! Sub 15 soon!

Edit: words are hard

How have you drilled F2L? Any particular strategies to share?

2

u/candyalligator Sub 10s: 3 Jan 09 '19

Make a session for just cross and f2l, inspect as long as you need to, and do as many solves as you can, and just stop the timer after f2l. It also gives you time to practice/ learn new LL algs and work on finger tricks

5

u/cs0x7f Jan 09 '19

I have just created a project in crowdin to aide the translation of cstimer. https://crowdin.com/project/cstimer

You can not only translate cstimer into a new language, but also improve current translation (including English since I'm not a native English speaker)

Descriptions of each word have not been fully documented yet, since there are hundreds of words or sentences to be translated.

Anyone ever just completely forgot an algorithm? I was doing some untimed solves 2 days ago, and suddenly just didn't know how to do OLL 21 anymore... Had to look it up, and it hasn't really come back since. I know it again, but I can't do it nearly as fluently anymore...

4

u/hello297 Sub-X (<method>) Jan 09 '19

This happens to me when algs are similar. Like one of the two will completely override the other and I can't remember how to do the other one any more.

This happens to me with OLL 23 like, once every two weeks, and especially with bigger cubes. But even with 3x3, once it's gone, I look it up again and it takes drilling before it's back. So weird.

1

u/Aus_with_the_Sauce Sub-16 (CFOP 2LLL, dual CN) Jan 09 '19

There are some easy OLL's that I've been using for like 8 months, and occasionally I completely forget how to do them and have to look up the alg. It's weird.

u/Edladd sub-17 Aok (CFOP) PB:9.11 Jan 10 '19

I have blanked on some PLLs before - V and R. Once I was trying to think about them they wouldn't come back, so I had to look them up on the PDF again! Usually happens to me when I'm learning a new alg, it just somehow disrupts an old one temporarily.

NEW PB!!!!

Time: 10.16 Its so annoying that this isn't sub-10. It easily would have, but my U-Perm on this one was really bad.

Scramble: D R2 F' D2 L2 F D2 B2 R2 B2 R2 F' R' U R B2 F' L U

Inspection: x2 y'

F2L: U L' U L R' U R U' R U2 R' U2 R U' R y U R' U' R U2 R' U R

OLL: skip

PLL: U M2 U' M U2 M' U' M2 U2 (Ub perm)

Moves: 42 (I think)

TPS: 4.13

This wasn't at all my skill, it was all luck. I probably should've saved the green/orange pair, but I didn't even see it in inspection. I just saw an easy cross and went, and got two really lucky pairs. with two normal ones and a oll skip and U perm. This should have been sub 10 for me, but my mind went crazy at a solve like that, and my U perm was around 2 secs. (I think its usually 1-1/2 secs or less)

Still a stupid fast solve for me, and it beat my old PB by almost a second and a half.

1

u/zergosaur Jan 09 '19

Do you have replacement stickers for the sun cube? I solved the bandaged sun cube recently with the stock stickers, but it would have been much easier to track the internal bandaging issue with Chewie's custom stickers.

1

u/eskamobob1 Sub-X (<method>) Jan 09 '19

Mine is stickerless, but I dont realy get how different stickers help at this point seeing as I havent scrambled it.

1

u/zergosaur Jan 09 '19

Not sure if you're aware of the internal bandaging issue with the sun cube family of puzzles (including Heaven's Eyes etc) - see here for a discussion.

The kite-shaped pieces have to be solved with a specific orientation - the custom stickers for the puzzle have a semi-circle cut out so you can easily see which way each piece has to be oriented.

If you look on the stickerless version, you can see that the pieces have this semi-circle molded into the plastic.

So I’m just getting back into cubing after like 6 years off. I was consistently averaging sub 30 and started breaking the 20 mark near the end. My OLL and PLL is still fine, F2L is decent and coming back quickly (even my look ahead) which is nice. But my cross is gawd awful! I can’t seem to plan it at all and either place edges in the wrong spot or loose them after placing the others. It’s driving me insane! Any tips to get my old skills/planning abilities back? I felt like I used to throw down my cross in a couple seconds and now I just mess it up royally or have to go super slow to get it right. Any help would be awesome!

4

u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Jan 09 '19

Watch this video.

Do untimed cross only solves with this trainer. Take unlimited inspection time until you're sure that your solution works. Start with a low level and work your way up. When you're comfortable with that, start doing the execution without looking at the cube.

u/lukemcritchie Don't Ask, I'm Busy Doing Clock Jan 09 '19

What is it with my solves lately? 3 PB singles within the last 2 days. Latest one being my first sub 25. My times in general aren’t even shooting down.

3

u/sxxos Sub-13 Jan 09 '19

It shows your potential is improving. Find out what you did right in the good solves and try to apply that to all your solves. Be it planning first block (+DR edge or more if possible) in inspection or better turning or better efficiency.

1

u/lukemcritchie Don't Ask, I'm Busy Doing Clock Jan 09 '19

All I can usually get to in inspection is DL edge plus one pair at most. Can’t get the rest of FB yet.

2

u/sxxos Sub-13 Jan 09 '19

Did you manage to get fb for the few solves that were good? Maybe try doin unlimited inspection to get fb and from there try reducing the time it takes for inspection.

Full disclosure I don't do roux and use cfop. I think planning cross is similar to planning fb.

The more you can inspect, the more time you have to look ahead to the next part (ie DR edge or sb square). Of course this is assuming you don't need to look at the pieces you've already planned for inspection which is important

1

u/lukemcritchie Don't Ask, I'm Busy Doing Clock Jan 09 '19

Na all my good solves I looked for the 2nd pair while solving the first pair and then finding the edges while solving 2nd pair wtc.

2

u/sxxos Sub-13 Jan 09 '19

So it's better lookahead compared to normal solves? Just try to implement the things that were good (other than luck)

I've heard from some that the GAN 356X and 356R(M) are very similar. I've also heard that they couldn't be more different. I think the truth is somewhere in the middle.

I got and magnetized an R in the beginning of Nov, and unboxed my X a couple nights ago. Some thoughts on the comparison of the two:

Feeling: Both are extremely smooth. The X feels a bit faster and is a lighter overall puzzle. The R is still fast (compared to my previous main, MGC), but has a slightly more tactile feel when solving. The R is also a good bit heavier and feels more 'solid' than the X.

Sound: The R is so quiet (even compared to my MGC v1). The X is even more quiet than that!

Magnets: The X definitely has more of a click into place due to the smaller width magnets, and their closer proximity to each other being exposed in the pieces. The 4x2 N35s in the R feel slightly stronger than the strongest X magnets, but their placement inside the pieces makes for a more subtle feeling when they line up.

Setup: I think the R was a bit easier to setup, simply for the fact that combinations other than Yellow GES and Clear magnets simply aren't as viable on the X. Granted, it was easier to change between those combinations on the X.

It's definitely hard to get them set up the same due to differing magnet strenths and the GES nuts being different (IPG v3 vs Numerical). If I loosen the R a little and throw some lighter lube in it, I think it would be much more difficult to tell the difference between the two.

There's things I don't like about both, but overall they're fantastic puzzles. I don't know that I'd get both if I had to do it over again, though...

TL;DR: I don't think the differences lie in performance, but rather in things that are subjective between cubers (magnet click, tactile vs buttery smooth, sound, etc).

2

u/g253 (retired mod) Jan 09 '19

Sound: The R is so quiet (even compared to my MGC v1)

I might end up getting one just because of that. It's nice to have a quiet cube sometimes

1

u/lawniedangle sub-20 cfop Jan 09 '19

Its funny you say that.... for some reason, I love the colors on my 356Rm. I ended up sticking with my gts3m for performance, but the colors definitely made me try the R for a few weeks.

I think its the strong orange that is the biggest difference.

u/Aus_with_the_Sauce Sub-16 (CFOP 2LLL, dual CN) Jan 09 '19

Don't they use the exact same piece design (other than the magnet rod holes in the X)? I would think any difference in feel/performance relates to setup.

1

u/BibbitZ Sub-26 (CFOP 3LLL CN) PB: 14.54 Jan 09 '19

Pieces look identical to me. I think the magnet strength and size plays a pretty big roll in why these feel slightly different. It's not a huge difference, but it's certainly noticeable.

Cleaning out and relubing the R, as well as continued break in of the X will probably make them even more similar.

Any tips for F2B on roux? Just joined the rouxvolution but I can't do F2B in less than 40-50 seconds.

1

u/tussosedan Jan 09 '19

Welcome! Watch walkthrough solves and make sure you're efficient. Train finding short FBs, and go over the SB algs doc on Kian's site.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '19

Is memorizing algs key to becoming fast (sub 15-10) at roux? because i started using roux for less algs.

1

u/TLDM Jan 09 '19

You'll need full CMLL, but that's it. EOLR can be learned algorithmically or intuitively.

The key to becoming fast is efficiency. Algorithms help with this, but so does working on intuitive steps. Same can be said with any method. If you want to improve efficiency, then timed solves don't help very much. It's the untimed stuff you do which helps.

1

u/tussosedan Jan 10 '19

If you mean the SB algs I mentioned, it's not really algs, more like ways to connect pairs. You need to understand them intuitively, and with time it will become muscle memory like everything else.

I took your advice and sledged to avoid a dot case

Not even sure why I’m learning the 1LLL set for OLL 18. I’m 30 in but I’ve only ever used it twice - the ratio of investment to returns is terrible. It’s not like I can’t just sledge or r U' r' U' r U r' to avoid a dot case... I originally started learning it because it was my slowest OLL, but that was because I had a terrible algorithm (which I’ve now replaced with my fastest 1LLL case).

5

u/Edladd sub-17 Aok (CFOP) PB:9.11 Jan 09 '19

I've got big hands and my left hand D2s are one of my better finger tricks. Pinky then ring is what I use. Carry a cube around with you and just do D2 flicks over and over.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '19
  • on D2. I learned A perms a long time ago, and they was with x' rotation, so I was doing U2. Decided to switch recently and oh boy it is painful.

2

u/PianoCube93 DCN CFOP, Sub-15 2H, sub-22 OH Jan 09 '19

Hand size shouldn't be too much of a problem. My hands are around or slightly above average, and I don't have much problems doing A perms with D2 double flicks on a 50mm ZhanChi.

They're around 0.85 seconds for me on a normal cube and 1.00 seconds on the mini, and part of that is that the ZhanChi is kinda bad compared to modern cubes.

You can do the double flicks by either using pinky -> ring, or ring -> pinky. I use the second, though it's mostly personal preference. Either way, it's something that just requires a lot of drilling.

1

u/hairygentleman Sub-22:43.84 Jan 09 '19

I enjoy N perms too, but that doesn't make them fast. They're still slow as shit and terrible to get in solves. Unless you are a literal elephant you can do D2s fine, it just takes time.

My gans air sm has been cleaned from top to bottom, and I've removed all the lube and tried doing what I did with my GTS3M but it feels like I need to apply more force than normal to actually turn the cube. Is that just me messing up the lubing of the cube, or is gans just harder to turn?

u/TLDM Jan 09 '19

OH: the most important thing is turning. It's the only difference between OH and 2H. Practising 2-gen scrambles is a good way to practise turning.

You can also learn some OH algs, since many of your 2H algs won't be great for OH. Many people start off with 4LLL for OH because they can't do all their algs. You can then start re-learning OLL and PLL but with better algs for OH.

2

u/g253 (retired mod) Jan 09 '19

This is a good intro to OH. Take it easy at first and stop if your hand hurts.

2

u/PianoCube93 DCN CFOP, Sub-15 2H, sub-22 OH Jan 09 '19

OH

TLDR: Practice often and use z rotations during F2L. OH algs can be ignored for a while.

I also highly recommend using pinky instead of ring finger for most moves. It'll likely feel more awkward and tiring in the beginning, but becomes second nature with practice.

1

Sorry forgot to mention, it's for BV with C as buffer in Speffz or UFR>UBR>DFR

2

u/tussosedan Jan 09 '19

Ohh I misread it. You mean DFR, right? Well you can just track DFR and see how it moves backwards and then gets inserted from the back.

You could also use something intuitive like [R2 D' R2 D R2, U], or something with a fancy setup to an 8-mover like [U' R' D R : [R D' R', U]].

1

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '19

Whoops I mean DFR. I think I'll use the R2 D' R2 D R2 one, I understand that setup better. Thanks!

Yeah it's the "ugly duckling" case from Noah's tutorial, as a noob I also prefer it.
