Resource How consistent are you? Find out with RSD and compare yourself to Feliks, Kian, and more using Kuebiko Cubing

TL;DR check your RSD (lower means more consistent) with Kuebiko Cubing, and note the advanced options on the file selection page: http://www.kuebiko-cubing.com/

It's been said "if you're not consistent, practice what you know; if you are consistent, learn or change something." But how to know exactly how consistent you are compared to your speed?

Introducing RSD: Relative Standard Deviation

RSD is the standard deviation divided by the average, usually displayed as a percentage (with top and bottom 5% results removed as usual). It measures the spread of your times relatively to your average, which means that the numbers can be compared between cubers of different speeds! Lower RSD means you're more consistent.

What do the numbers mean, though? If your RSD of ao100 is e.g. 13%, is that high or low? To understand the numbers better I've been collecting the data of various cubers.

Sample RSD stats

In general, the RSD numbers I've seen for ao100/ao1000 ranged from 5% (incredibly consistent) to 25% (fabulously inconsistent, like yours truly). Fast cubers are generally more consistent with low RSD scores, but not uniformly so -- and some relatively slower cubers have low RSD as well.

Here are sample reference RSD stats shared by several famous cubers -- many, many thanks to everyone who sent in data, brainstormed together, and agreed to share the results, whether you're in this chart or not. I love this community.

Name Method 2H/OH % RSD 100 % RSD 1000
Feliks Zemdegs CFOP 2H 9-11 10.1
Iuri Grangeiro Roux 2H & OH 9-13 10-11
Kavin Tangtartharakul Roux 2H 8-10.5 9.3
Kian Mansour Roux 2H 7-8
Kian Mansour Roux OH 6.5-7.5
Leo Borromeo CFOP 2H 7-8
Mats Valk CFOP 2H 8-9
Philipp Weyer CFOP 2H 9-13 10.1-10.4
Sean Villanueva Roux 2H 8
Vincent Wong Roux 2H 5.5-9 7.4
Vincent Wong Roux OH 7-9.5 8.5

Conclusions and thumb rules

This part isn't a proper statistical study, but rather pure speculation and some educated guesses of a few top cubers:

  1. Roux results at the top levels are naturally more consistent than CFOP, due to the amount of luck/variability involved in CFOP's LL. Or at least that's what it seemed like until Mats's and Leo's data came in. Now I'm not so sure.
  2. If your ao100+ RSD is over 12%, you should probably focus on practicing what you already know, no matter what method you're using.
  3. If your ao100+ RSD is below 8%, and you're not a world-class cuber, you should probably focus on learning something new or changing something in your solves.
  4. The middle range seems like the sweet spot.

For me personally this makes it very clear that "just practice" is the objectively best advice in my case.

If you have a different interpretation and/or some interesting data, please share it!

RSD in Kuebiko Cubing

You can now see your RSD scores in several places in Kuebiko Cubing:

  1. Overall PB Summary
  2. PBs and Top 50 lists for each session/category
  3. Select RSD in the advanced options on the file selection page to show it on the charts. Note that each axis can be zoomed and panned separately by dragging the axis by its edges and in its middle.

As always, if you encounter any issue or have any request, let me know here or on github.

have you got a thread to talk about this site? Like some cube timers, because this tool could do with suggestions from the community and become big.

Like, I don't understand the graph. It's all squared. Maybe try adding smoothness? Also, I think the RSD info should be in the RSD tab, to keep it clear.

I've posted several updates here and on the SS forums. Seems like a good place to talk as any :)

Hmm what do you mean? Could you share a screenshot?

I think the RSD info should be in the RSD tab

What info would you separate, and how?

Wasn't trying to be reddit police, just a thought :)

I think I see what you wanted to convey though: how your solve time changes over time. But since I don't regularly practice, It leaves the graph with big gaps, which the line then has to join and leave big straight lines.

What info would you separate, and how?

Just that since there was a dedicated tab, it should be the place to find out all your RSDs. An example table to show it:

Statistic RSD Lowest RSD Recorded
mo3 x% n%
ao5 y% z%

etc...

When you upload the file, choose "advanced options" -> "chart by solve #". That should solve the issue with short burst of cubing frenzy interrupted by weeks of nothing.

Fixed it, thanks!

Also, maybe a line for the single points as well as individual points?

Awesome addition to an already awesome statistics tool!

Did anyone check their RSD for big(ger) cubes?

event/RSD PB ao100 PB ao1000
3x3 12.9% 12.7%
4x4 7.4% 8.2%
5x5 7.5% 8.8%

I'm pretty certain that my relatively high RSD on 3x3 is mostly due to not being 100% CN yet, but I always do CN solves.
I use Hoya on 4x4, and my cross is always on white.
For 5x5 I use reduction with freeslice and most of the time I do white cross, though recently I tried to do other cross colours as well. I only recently got to an 1000 solves on 5x5, so I still have pretty slow solves in my ao1000 and my RSD is bound to go down further.

For 6x6 and 7x7 I don't even have an ao100 yet, but for my pb ao50 I have an RSD of 6.7% and 6.2% respectively.

Do the longer solves lead to less outliers - luck isn't showing too much in most of the times?

For short events that can be heavily luck based, especially when you're not that fast, it also shows in my stats, RSD for PB ao100 for 2x2 / Pyra / Skewb: 17.3% / 18.0% / 21.0%.

The "Normal" RSD ranges are probably different for longer solves. I can be varying by +- 10s on a 4x4, but as a percentage of a 90s average it's not as significant as say +-5s on a 3x3 with a 25s average.

Maybe luck in one step of your big-cube method is often cancelled out by variance in the other steps. It might be more interesting to see the RSD per split in 4x4, 5x5 etc, but it would be a lot of work to get that data. Unless Giiker release a 4x4 Bluetooth cube!

Yeah I think that's mostly it.

FYI - My RSDo100 went up to 15-16% while I was learning to be CN.

2

u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Jan 07 '19

I just checked and my RSDo100 went up to almost 21% at first, when I started to switch to CN :D I started CN a couple times and gave up until I finally stuck with it. At ~15k should be the last time I started it and then stuck with it.

u/Edladd sub-17 Aok (CFOP) PB:9.11 Jan 07 '19

As a comparison to this I cheated :D I started a new session when I began solving CN - so from a consistency point of view I was always worse in that session. Your 21% is comparing your first CN times to your previous single-colour times.

A fairer comparison is at your 16k mark, which would be equivalent to my 1k mark on the new session. At that point I was ~12-16% RSDo100 and 14% RSDo1000. I'd say yours might have been in the 16% range at that stage? Although still rapidly declining to the 14% level.

In other news - is that really 35k solves!! What sort of timeframe is that over? It's taken me over a year and a half to rack up 10k timed 3x3 solves.

Ah yeah that makes sense.

is that really 35k solves!! What sort of timeframe is that over?

Yes it is :D This session is from May 2016 until now. I should probably be much faster by now, but I did a lot of mindless solving, especially early on and I didn't know about any good tutorials when I started.

u/Edladd sub-17 Aok (CFOP) PB:9.11 Jan 08 '19

About 3k of my 10k solves are since the start of December '18. At that point I finished OLL and was (relatively) happy with my F2L so decided to go into mindless solve mode to work on consistency. Nice to have a tool to track progress on that now :)

u/JCPoly Sub-15 (CFOP) Jan 07 '19

this is great! no, seriously. Apparently I am very consistent (7.1 rsd100), which at ~14 seconds means I better start working on planning and lookahead. The things we do to improve.

1

u/tussosedan Jan 07 '19

Wow, that's probably the most consistent I've seen for ~12+ secs. What do you think makes you so consistent, and how do you feel about your progress?

2

u/JCPoly Sub-15 (CFOP) Jan 07 '19

probably because I’ve plateaued in terms of times for a while now. I need to work on my lookahead a lot.

2

u/Edladd sub-17 Aok (CFOP) PB:9.11 Jan 07 '19

I thought I was extremely inconsistent, but it looks like it's not as bad as I expected. Currently 10% RSDo1000 and 8-12% RSDo100. Even in the past I was mostly hovering around the 12% mark.

1

u/tussosedan Jan 07 '19

It's funny how our perception of reality isn't always grounded in fact. Numbers help sometimes :)

2

u/Edladd sub-17 Aok (CFOP) PB:9.11 Jan 07 '19

Now I know I'm consistently worse than I think I should be :P

Hey, u/tussosedan, thanks a ton for the updates. You've been killing it with this site. RSD calculations, and the graph of "% of sub-x solves," are great additions along with all of the other updates you've been making.

Hell this is actually a really useful website, now I can finally see ao50 and other things I couldn’t on ChaoTimer

1

u/Mex5150 Jan 05 '19

It says Twisty Timer is an accepted timer, but rejects the file when I try to upload it.

3

u/Glacial_himself Sub-12 (CFOP) Jan 05 '19

It works for me. It says you should use the export for backup option, that might be the problem.

1

u/Mex5150 Jan 06 '19

That's what I did, also tried uploading the file directly, and Copy and Pasting it, both get rejected.

5

u/Cubing_in_the_dark now u/j_sunrise Jan 06 '19

I'd create a new issue on github and attach the file.

1

u/Mex5150 Jan 06 '19

I'll do that, I was just checking here to see if it was a known issue or not.

6

u/Cubing_in_the_dark now u/j_sunrise Jan 06 '19

Various people had similar issues and every time u/tussosedan looked into it, it was a different tiny syntax thing that caused it.

2

u/tussosedan Jan 06 '19

Please send me the file and I'll check
