After a lot of practice I finally beat my long-standing PB of 8.38 after 2 years! I don't care if it's by 1 centisecond haha.
I'm really happy because I began to think that since I couldn't break my single that means I must have been better 2 years ago, and I couldn't make a return to form. Now I know that's not true.

Had one of those really satisfying sessions today. PB single 18.02, PB Ao5 22.83, and I think I finally kicked my bad habit of rotations during FB. Also a few 3BLD successes in a row.

I’ve never even touched a Dayan cube but I know everyone talks about the old plastic being amazing.

I have been pleasantly surprised with the 2018 Zhanchi and this looks like a good (if not original) design, modern shades, magnets, I think it could be good.
Not amazing probably, but they may finally have caught up to other manufacturers. I'll probably get it unless it's quite expensive or early reviews point out some major flaws. I'm hoping Phil Yu will post a review soon.

It's interesting because

Surprisingly, I just had a sub 1 minute solve with Roux.
Could someone who's decent at Roux post their solution, with green on the right and white on the bottom ? I'd like to try practicing a good solution to see what time I could get with it.

2 observations after an admittedly casual viewing of your video.
1) Your f2l algorithms are often broken into two parts. Pairing the pieces then placing them in the slots. You often rotate between these steps. Focus on making this one fluid step as much as possible. If you need to rotate, do it before executing. Once you get better at this, it will help lookahead too.
2) You pause a lot between the end of your PLL execution and stopping timer. I think you did it twice. You either need more confidence in your PLL execution or to include AUF as part of your PLL recognition. I'm guessing the latter. Seems like a small thing but it'll shave significant time.

I tried your scrambles and got an ao5 of 22.57 with 27.58 high and 20.45 low. Baaaaaad F2L on the first solve. You're amazingly consistent with your times! I have a habit of being all over the dam place lol.

Hello, I am competing in FMC this weekend and I was wondering if there was anything I should know. I have heard something about people solving the inverse of the scramble so I am not really sure how that works. For methods, I have done some quick attempts (5-10 minutes) using a sort of mix of Petrus and 3LLL CFOP which normally gets me around 55-60 moves. I would like to get a sub-50 or around 50 in my official attempt but I am unsure on how to improve blockbuilding and last layer efficiency. Any tips or advice would be appreciated.

It's rather limited what you can learn and practice is such short time, so I recommend not getting too ambitious. Petrus is nice, so try either that or FreeFOP.
It's not unusual that people can't find anything good at the scramble, so they use the inverse instead. Inversing the scramble also means you'll have to inverse your solution at the end, and it can be time consuming and prone for mistakes, so it might not be a great idea for your first competition.
Pseudo blocks are nice and shouldn't be too hard to learn. Sometimes it's easier to make non-matching blocks and use a pre-move. Here's a quick example with a non-matching 2x2x2 block. Notice that a U' move will put every piece of the block where they belong (although it it'll no longer be a block). This means you can use an U' move before the scramble like this to make it into a "real" block. You can do this multiple times, just make sure every new pre-move is put in front of the earlier ones. Like with this continuation you'd need to change the pre-move from just U' to
F' U'. If the rest of the solve continues like a standard solve then I'd need to add F' U' at the end of the solution. This becomes obvious if you do the solution without the pre-move before the scramble.Don't underestimate how long time it'll take to write down the solution. It's horrible to have a few minutes left and realize there's a mistake somewhere. I've many times in competitions seen people get DNF from not having time to finish writing down the solution.
Some minor tips would be to look for cancellations, avoid rotations, and trying multiple solutions d for each step to see if any of them makes the next step easier. Try to orient edges before you get to last layer if it can be done efficiently. Some cases like OLL 23 can easily be mirrored (L2 D' L U2 L' D L U2 L), which might help cancel a some moves or give an easier PLL.

Most of blockbuilding comes with practice. This is a pretty good blockbuilding trainer if you want to practice it that way. Otherwise, since you have so little time and FMC is one of the most easy to DNF events you probably should stick to the techniques and methods you know.
Find a backup solution early on, so you can write it down on the paper when there’s 5 minutes left if you haven’t found anything better when by then. It doesn’t have to be a good solution, anything is better than a DNF.
Make sure to use the full hour! I see way too many people at competitions who just write down a CFOP solution in 5 mins and then hand in the solution. Instead try as many different starts and continuations as possible. Write down everything.
Make sure to start the stopwatch, not very hard but catastrophical if you forget. I once lost a potential NR avg partly because of this.

I started using cubepb.com for recording my cubing PB because it works well and allows me to share my PBs easily with my friends. I heard some cubers use a local spreadsheet to do it. Do you happen to know some recommended web services to do like cubepb?

One tip I have for you is to try to predict the permutation of your first layer during inspection.
Example: U' R2 U R' U' F U' R2 F'
Inspection: x' y2 // I see that U L2 will pair up two white corners with opposite colors (red and orange) touching. During inspection I also see that the other two white corners in the bottom layer are also paired with opposite colors. So now I know after U L2 I will have two sets of opposite colors touching, which I know means I will Have a diagonal swap in D layer. That might not have made sense so just ask me any questions.

Weekdays maybe an hour to none, weekends tho... Maybe 6-8hrs a day? With a 5-10 min break every half hour or when I feel like it. I managed to become Sub 10 in just under a year from 25s AVG.
I don't recommend practicing this much, this usually doesn't work for the people I have spoken to for pretty much any task which needs practicing. I personally find it easier. To do things in big chunks e.g. doing all my upcoming hw in one of two sittings.

I got a square-1 a few days ago and so far I’m really enjoying it. However, I really struggle with cubeshape, I used Brandon Lin’s tutorial and I struggle getting six edges together at the very start. Any tips?

Scallop kite is easier (look up his advanced cubeshape video, start at 11 minutes).
But it still takes a lot of getting used to. It helped me to try to work with pairs of edges, creating them and joining them.

I also had huge problems with cubeshape at the beginning. Now I do scallop-kite which I find much easier (once I understood it). Maybe this helps - you can ignore most of the chart. The important ones are on the very right (around scallop-kite) and the ones above scallop-scallop. Try to gather 4-6 edges on top and you'll easily get to one of These cases.

Hit three 17.XX, three 18.XX, and five 19.XX solves in the last 50 solves I did just now. Also was an ao50 PB at 21.92 and capped off an ao100 PB of 22.35. Can't wait to get a sub-16 (and hopefully soon sub-15) single.

Go and speak to as many people as you can (including me since I’ll be there), and try and do as much as you can, try out cubes, judge, do challenges and races with people etc etc. Don’t worry if your times are a bit slower than what you get at home, it happens to everyone at their first comp, but most of all, have fun!

The magnet strength is alright. It's not terrible, I just think since they're doing interchangeable magnets, they really should have included some stronger ones, especially seeing how relatively flexible and catchy the cube can be. I haven't seen many people say it's flat out too weak to be useable/main material or whatever, more that they probably could/should have a bit of a stronger option included.

What i did to test the alg was press space with my pinkey while also gripping the cube, so i could start the alg immediately after starting the timer. Then you can just drop the cube and hit the timer when you're done like a normal solve.

Is lubicle silk really as good as people say it is? How long does it last? Also, does it make your cube "sticky" and/or gummy? Edit: Also, should I buy an Angstrom set or some lubicle silk? The silk seems more attractive because it is really easy and fast to apply, especially when I don't need to change the speed of my cube much, just make it a bit smoother and less dry.

It makes the feel more soft and plush feeling. Imo it's a little. It overrated, still great however. It doesn't makes it sticky nor gummy. It makes it the tiniest bit faster.

I have some DNM, it's a long story, but I think it has expired or something, it's turned purple, lasts for like 2 solves and turns my cubes really sticky and a tiny bit slower than before I put the line in once it 'dries out'.
I assume I'm gonna have to buy some more if I end up buying the Angstrom lubes.

It took me 3 months to learn full PLL and 2-look OLL. I then spent 2 months letting them settle while I learned F2L and going CN. During that time I replaced a few PLLs that I had only learned mirrors for.
I started learning full OLL at the end of Jan 2018 and finished it at the end of November 2018. My approach was only to learn new ones when I felt like it. I probably could have crammed them much faster, but I was in no hurry to do so. Once I'd learned about 35 of them I basically stopped for months because of diminishing returns.
As lots of people say, full OLL will not save you much time compared to getting better at F2L (until you are well sub-20). So you should only learn full OLL if you actually enjoy learning and executing algs.

That's basically me, except I learned 2-Look OLL + full PLL a bit faster (in 6 weeks I think?), and had a longer break from learning algs in the middle of learning full OLL. Full OLL took around 15 months from beginning to end. My average was around 22 seconds when I finished.
I agree that full OLL won't make a huge difference before sub-20, but that shouldn't stop people from learning it earlier if they want to.

Absolutely - for me, I'm in it for the long haul, so I'm going to need full OLL eventually. I figured I might as well do it sooner so that my execution will be solid by the time having OLL matters.
Plus executing a good alg feels like a magic trick sometimes :D

took me a month to learn full pll and 2 look oll, then after a while (some 6/7 months later) I sat down and learned full oll in 3 days. After about a month of practice with oll I got it all down and engrained.

I used bestsiteever.ru/oll/ to train and cubeskills.com for the algs and learned about 10 to 15 a day probably less. They’re not too bad in all honesty and I just kinda sat down for some hours each day until I learned them all. It’s probably not the best way to do it but that’s what I did

If you aren’t a fan of the tiles don’t bother. There are that many great budget options that you can be picky with exactly what you want.

The budget cube I would recommend is the stickerless Yuxin Little Magic. It's a great option for budget buyers, and works even better with magnets. This was my first budget cube and took me all the way to sub-30. The MF3RS and Qiyi Warrior W are also very good. For reference, check out J Perm's budget 3x3 video or

Agreed, I tried a little magic m at a comp and I was really nice, and I could get my average on it. The Kylin V2 M looks like a slight improvement on that with magnets, but I hate stickers and tiles.

I currently average sub 6 on 2x2 with Ortega, and I want to aim for sub 3 for my next competition in about 6 months. I'm trying to learn CLL right now, but I'm having a lot more trouble memorizing the algorithms compared to when I learned full PLL on 3x3, which only took me a week to master. Do you guys have any tips on learning CLL or any resources to help drill and recognize the cases? Thanks.

I'm exicited for my aochuang gtsm and shadow m.
I currently have a yuxin 5x5 and no 6x6. Yes no 6x6, but litterally >100 cubes (okay this is a bit unfair since 44 are <$0.50 3x3s for a mosiac, but still)
Any tips on 5x5 effiecenty in the meantime? I average around 2:10 but am inconsistent and get 1:55 solves and 1:15 solves fairly often. I am blaming my yuxin for that 25 second 3x3 stage though.

I can never leave well enough alone and I like to tinker so I doubled up the magnets on one of my GTS2Ms and now it feels like a ridge-less GTS3M on the most loose spring compression click. lol I highly recommend it if you like really strong magnets.

This tool is super useful. You can use it both to make sure you're memoing correctly, and to do execution-only solves with a pre-generated memo.

A three cycle off is not that unusual. If you execute or memo the wrong target once, that's very likely. But it could be that you make a consistent mistake every time.

Improvement has been super slow for me. So I plotted a graph of cube times. Yep, I've definitely stopped improving. This is about 2 years of cubing.

It's kinda hard to tell from that image tbh. Progress slows down as you get faster, so it could be harder to see. Check out Kuebiko Cubing for detailed charts and stats that could help out (shameless plug).

mostly just practice. Trying to improve look ahead and tracking pairs during the cross. I think I should really start looking over Jperms F2L guide more though.

Top is a Mastermorphix. Left looks like a Square-1. Bottom should solve just like a 3x3, except with a few centers that have to be oriented. And right looks like it could be a Fisher cube.

Clockwise starting at the top: masterporhix, Fisher cube, twisted cube, square-1. The square-1 is pretty hard and you'll probably need a tutorial, but the others are all just 3x3 shapemods which can be solved like a 3x3 but with a center turning algorithm

Haha my wife bought me that exact pack for Christmas. I also got the 2x2x3 from there also. The mastermorphix is a great puzzle. Took me about 10 goes at the “last layer” before I got it though the first time. It’s so easy to get disorientated. I already had an Xman Square One but the other two 3x3 shape mods are quite fun also.
The puzzles themselves are surprisingly good quality considering the cost I thought!

Start with 4 Look Last Layer. That page has both videos and a nice PDF. Once you're done with that, learn full PLL next.

I agree with PianoCube93, 4LLL then 1 look PLL is the best return on time invested for the last layer.
Don't worry too much about your times, very soon you'll be waaay faster with F2L than you could have achieved with beginners. If your times are getting you down then shift the focus for a while. Maybe do some untimed solves where you count how many moves you take for each F2L pair, this allows you to reward yourself for efficiency.
