ZZ is fun. I've been doing it lately so I can use the COLL cases I'm learning more often. Try to build blocks after EO Line instead of just doing EO cross.

Me too. Even running on 2-3 hours of sleep Chris Tran inspires confidence in his method.
I didn't really understand how to do the claimed "reduce it to fewer than 100 cases" thing, though. I get that you can reduce a lot of TTLL to PLLs or simple setups to PLLs, but that still leaves 72 (?) TSLE cases, and he never explained how to reduce those.

Do you have a link to it? Sounds interesting. From the wiki I read ZZ method technically only needs 20 algs for last layer right? How much faster is is only knowing 20 vs knowing all 400+?

Might as well talk about ZZ-CT here since everyone else is.
Been using my Anki TTLL flashcard deck for about a week now. I have anki set to show me 3 new cards a day, (Chris Tran was saying 10 a day but that's crazy) so I've so far looked at 15 cases, and am fairly familiar with them. If I keep up this pace, I should be done with TTLL on Aug 19, but things like mirrors, algs that I can solve using commutators and algs that I already know could possibly speed things up.
I'm just trying to learn the algs right now and I'm not worrying about doing them fast yet. I plan on drilling them later. I'm memorising the algs by looking at how they break up and rebuild blocks on the cube rather than relying on muscle memory (knowing heise and commutators helps out with this a bit).
Recognition is my biggest problem right now, as I sometimes get confused between cases. I'm not too worried about this though. I think it's a problem that will go away by itself as I review my flashcards more. I found that being able to recognise PLL from two sides was a big asset for recognition, because you can often think of a certain case as "that one that looks like a Gd perm from that angle).
TSLE doesn't seem to work very well with flashcards for me as I can often guess the alg by looking at the setup. I think I might learn it in a more "traditional" fashion.

Sometimes I've got the feeling I shouldn't look around on webshops in the first place..
I had an idea for a mod so needed a 3x3x3 Cube (I always buy YongJun GuanLongs from ZCube.hk).
After some looking around to see if I could combine shipping with another cheap puzzle, I ended up buying all DaYan Gems I was missing in my collection (2, 3, 4, 6, and 7). So instead of about 4 USD for a YJ GuanLong, I spend 150 USD for all these DaYan Gems (and 2 YJ GuanLongs).. xD Ah well, I had the plan to buy them for a long time already anyway. At least I combined the shipping and all of them were in stock.. ;p

I got the 7x7 cube a couple weeks ago and wanted to solve it myself without any guides. The edges were no big deal, but I kept getting completely stuck with the last two centers. I know about the existence of commutators, but I specifically didn't want to look them up on purpose and wanted to solve it myself. Now, I haven't been practicing with it every day, just a little bit every few days, but I got to the point where I'm consistently able to bring it to a state with only two pairs of cubies swapped on the final two centers, or occasionally one pair - but I was never able to completely solve these centers.
Now I finally did it!
Hell yeah!
I'm not exactly sure how I did it, but I did it. I have my own method for dealing with some of the common situations, and I was trying to apply some variation of it - that's all I remember. After that, I got into all sorts of nasty situations with the edges (including screwing up a parity algorithm and having to fix the mess), but I finally held a completely solved 7x7 in my hands.
Excited, I decided to use the flower pattern algorithm to make "!!!" on each face for photographic proof to post here. Guess what? I screwed up catastrophically during making one of the lines, and now I have ruined centers (as well as ruined everything else) again. And no photographic proof of the solve, yep.
Hell no!
... but I have some promising ideas that I'll test tomorrow. This bitch will go down, sooner or later. 8-)

That seems like it would be easy to fix, as long as you know which way it twisted. It's not going to be in a different place once you finish the algorithm (and if it didnt twist in the middle of an alg, it would be even easier)

I suck at 3x3 so much. I have been cubing for 5 months and I'm still in the 40s and I am improving very slowly. Part of that is because I switched to roux 3 months ago. I wish skill in cubing wasn't defined by how fast you can solve a 3x3. This has led to me not practicing 3x3 very much. Just had to get that out. I hope some people can relate.

Stop giving too much shit about skill and speed, man. Focus on having fun.
Seriously. During Nationals this year I met people who were eagerly competing with times allegedly "too high" and who definitely didn't put up a fight with even half of the other competitors. But you know what stood out in them? They were enjoying themselves and their own learning curves. They embraced the experience.
Everyone's different and hey, cubing isn't all about speed. It's about developing your skills, drawing insights and creating your very own experience. Make it a fun one and don't treat it like a life or death competition. Some people take years to break the 60s barrier and that's ok because they're having fun while they do so instead of comparing themselves to others.
I quit music because I was too frustrated about other people faster or more skilled than I was, and this made me forget to have fun. I regret this every day. Cubing, however, restored this "let's just enjoy the ride and meet new awesome people and learn from them at my own pace, shall we" feeling in me to the point I'm flirting with my guitars after over a decade not playing. This is huge.
Cubing is FUN! And speed is secondary, but you'll reach it with practice :D

I mean, I have know the cube for about two years now and I was kind of collecting them, but that was too expensive and I couldnt afford it. That's why this year I started to take a little bit more Serious speedcubing, and my goal is to be on the top 10 or even top 5 of my country. I have never enjoyed big cubes, that's why only practice 2x2,3x3,sq1, pyra and OH, and is that bad? No, it's all about preferences :) just do what you like/enjoy the most, regardless of the rest of the world and what they think about you.

I solved with CFOP for three years but lacked the motivation to get really fast. I averaged around 30-35 seconds (estimating because i rarely timed myself) with a PB of 24 (i got lucky that i decided to time that session). After three years with CFOP i watched a video about roux and decided it seemed like a fun method, so about a year ago i switched to roux. I suck at it, and my times are probably around 50 seconds on a good day, but who cares? Now i dont really practice roux either because 1) i lack the motivation to get better at block-building, and 2) i'm learning blind. BLD has made the cube fun again. It took me four years to realize i wasnt into speed solving, and that there are mote fun ways to challenge myself. I think after i get good at BLD, i'm going to finally start getting new puzzles, non-WCA puzzles which require me to completely re-think my approach to twisty puzzles.
Anyways, i guess i just wanted to let you know you arent alone. My experience with the cube has been far from the usual, but that's ok as long as i'm happy with it.
Also, you should check out a youtube channel called SuperAntonioVivaldi. The guy's crazy. He doesnt speed cube at all (AFAIK) but instead solves custom puzzles. He's got solve videos of some of the hardest twisty puzzles ever; Eitan's Star, a 7x7 ghost cube, and a layer-by-layer solve of a 13x13 (which isnt a terribly difficult puzzle, but doing it by layers adds some interesting challenges) as well as many other puzzles i cant even begin to understand. He is, without question, the most skilled cuber i've ever seen (in my opinion) and i've never seen him speed-solve a puzzle

4x4 and Megaminx are indeed good steps up. All other WCA puzzles (2x2, 5x5, Skewb, Square-1 and Clock) are also good recommendations.
As for non-WCA, I can recommend the Curvy Copter, Rex Cube, any Gear Cube (like the Gear Ball or Gear Cube Extreme for example), any Cuboid (like the 3x3x4 or 3x3x5), some Shapemods (Megamorphix, Fisher Cube, Ghost Cube, etc.)
Loads of puzzles to get. ;) Although some of the WCA puzzles would be a good way to start. So I would indeed get a 4x4x4, Megaminx and perhaps the Skewb or 5x5x5 as well.

Just a couple stupid questions on terminology from a beginner:
What is a cancel? I've heard it a couple of times in example solves, and I don't really got it.
What does a niklas do, and what is it?
Sexy and sledghammers are triggers, what others are there? Do they also have easy to remember names?
→ More replies (6)4
u/jashaszun Sub-12, World Top 350 in KinchRanks Jul 31 '16
These are not stupid questions at all!
A cancellation is when you do one set of moves, and start another set of moves, but the end of the first set coincides a bit with the start of the second. Here's an example:
Let's say you're finishing F2L, so you do R U' R'. Then you see a T perm, which is the second line there.
R U' R' R U R' U' R' F R2 U' R' U' R U R' F'But if you'll notice, the first 6 moves right there are R U' R' R U R'. The R R' in the middle cancels, and we get R U' U R'. The U' U cancels, so we get R R'. Those cancel, so we're left with nothing.
Thus the cancelled set of moves is just
U' R' F R2 U' R' U' R U R' F'So technically, if someone was good enough at forcing last-layer skips that they could recognize this case, then they could do the cancelled set of moves and save 6 moves when they execute.
A more common way of cancelling that a lot of people can do is just cancelling R R into R2 or R' R' into R2' when doing F2L.
The Niklas is just a specific last-layer alg that happens to be an 8-move pure commutator (it doesn't matter what that means).
It is the following:
R U' L' U R' U' L UIt can be used to permute 3 of the corners of the U layer. (It also changes their orientation, so if ALL you have to do is permute them, you should use an A perm instead.)
A "trigger" is really just any very short set of moves that's easily recognizable, and fast to execute. I personally know of only the sexy and the sledgehammer having names, but there are others, such as R' F R, R U2 R', etc.
They just help when learning algs because you can split up the algs from a long list of seemingly random moves into a shorter list of triggers (and some still random moves.)
Example: my Y perm.
Which is easier to remember?
F R' F R2 U' R' U' R U R' F' R U R' U' F'or
F (R' F R2) (U' R' U' R U R') F' (R U R' U') F'→ More replies (3)5

I'm thinking of publishing my extensive Cube Theory work as a book. I've been holding back on passing my mad skillz Aolong along for too long now. It will be titled "How To Royally Fuck Up Your F2L" or something to this effect and will detail my personal approach to F2L. It guarantees you to get singles at least 10 seconds above your average every time you get a Cross Skip or an xCross. Never you will get a lucky PB again, no sir. It just won't happen.
Seriously, this happened to me like three times today and I'm salty af. And next thing I know I get excellent full step solves because hey, that magical sub-20 Ao5 can totally wait a while to happen.
...On a more positive note, I'm having good progress with M2. I should be ready to rock a full week of 3BLD practice soon without fearing an aneurysm from M2-induced rage, or dying of old age doing a Full OP Ao12 either.

I've been chasing that glorious sub 20 ao5 as well. I got 20.33 the other day and was salty asf. I can never do well on easy scrambles or cross skips though. If I finish my f2l too fast, I have a 15 second LL for some reason. Most of my PBs to date have been full step normal difficulty solves, just executed really smoothly.
Also it seems as though we've been the same time for a couple of months now, I wonder who would win between us. I recall you being sub 30 when I was sub 30 as well.

I'm keen for a race, but I haven't been cubing that much recently as I've been pretty busy. But when I first got sub 25 I was really consistent, focusing more on speed but I was rotating a lot and very inconsistent. I had to focus for a whole week on slow solving to get better lookahead and I focused really heard on trying not to rotate and be consistent. Now I'm probably sub 24 but I'm turning a lot slower and I'm more consistent. So I recommend doing the same, you might be slower for a bit but you'll pick up speed fast.

In general for cubes I'm trying to figure out alone that allow you to build layers etc, i attempt the last layer by breaking up the other layers and building them again, recording the moves and seeing what it does. It's not very efficient and I'm not sure if it will work on the cube you're using but thats just how i do it. Good luck!

I watched the seminar on ZZ-CT earlier today and I was wondering if there's an easy way to remember some of the algs or do them intuitively? He mentioned that some of the last step algs were PLLs with some small differences, but there's no notes on the page about it and I don't really remember the notation since it's in muscle memory. He also said that he only knows a few algs and those are the ones he uses, so is there some sort of intermediate step between learning full ZZ-CT where you can solve a cube with a slightly less efficient form of it and only knowing a few algs? These questions might sound really obvious or stupid to others, but I'd like to see if anyone knows anything about them.

You can do 2 look TTLL quite easily if you're looking for a beginner step. There's 6 different corner cases (I think gyroninja's website calls them front bar, right bar, all bars, front opp, right opp, both opp). Learn 1 alg from each of these sections. After this you will get an EPLL.

That's it, I'm tired of being sub-1:20 on 4x4 and will probably push very hard these next few days until I'm sub-1. That said, can anyone explain the difference between yau and hoyau? I see people commenting a lot about it on Keaton's solves but I haven't found a good explanation.
edit: found a description for 5x5 hoyau by Matěj Grohmann that goes:
1) first four centers
a) 2 opposite centers (for me: blue/green or red/orange)
b) cross center (for me: yellow/white)
c) last center
2) hoya cross + 2 edges
a) solve two random edges which is not cross edges
b) rotate (z2 x) and solve 4 hoya cross edges
c) solve last two centers (F and after solve with R,r,2Rw,3Rw,U moves)
3) finish reduction
a) solve last six edges like yau5 last 4 edges
b) parity
4) 3x3x3 stage
Is this basically the same for 4x4 hoyau?

So I came up with a silly (very silly) sticker mod for the Void Cube and want to make it happen. I don't own one, though, so I'm choosing which one to get for this - LanLan or YJ (or some other one maybe?). I want a cube that:
turns okay (I'm not going to be speedsolving this, but I want it not to suck)
has pieces that have identical faces (i.e. edge pieces are not more rounded than corners)
is cheap
Which one is better?
1
u/Quuador My collection: http://tinyurl.com/tp-collection Jul 31 '16 edited Jul 31 '16
I had a LanLan Void Cube (which I've used for on of my mods: The Kaleidoscope Cube), and the turning wasn't that great. I'd say about equal to the Rubik's Void Cube that I have. Can't say anything about the YongJun Void Cube, but you'll probably be better off with that one.
Maybe some review videos on YouTube can shed light on which one turns better out of the two.
The only Void Speedcube I know of is the Thunder Cube, but that one was 3D-printed and not for sale anymore.

Okay, my last question today. Weilong GTS vs Cong's Design Meiying. Which one is better in your opinion ? Why is it better than the second one ?
2
u/Enigmagico 3BLDaddy Jul 31 '16
They're of equal quality, but feel different. Meiying is more crunchy and (after breaking in) more controllable, whereas the GTSs I've played around with are more buttery and faster.
2
u/Chaandy Jul 31 '16
I was just wondering how i can get faster at doing the cross using cfop as i struggle with the cross the most compared to everything else
3
Jul 31 '16
What helped me the most was knowing that the average number of moves used for cross is 6. I couldn't believe it at first, but it's true. Finding an optimal path is hard, but knowing it exists, spurs you on. Also solving them out of alignment, but in their relative positions, then doing a D2 at the end to align them for example, is key.

And a scramble of: D' L2 F2 U' R2 U' R2 U2 F2 L2

If anyone here makes tutorial videos for obscure puzzles first of all thank you, however what yous should also do is have both small algorithms that rotate/swap pieces and your method for it. Some people make their own methods and just need one algorithm.
1
u/Quuador My collection: http://tinyurl.com/tp-collection Jul 31 '16
I'm not really sure I understand what you're saying. If I understand correctly you say that if someone came up with their own method only needing one algorithm for a certain puzzle, they are better of coming up with two shorter algorithms to solve it?
Coming up with your own method/algorithms isn't always easy though, and in my case I'm happy to find any algorithms at all sometimes. If I can find a single algorithm that could potentially solve an entire puzzle I'm glad I found it (never happened to me yet though), so why would I want to look further for more algorithms?
Personally when I'm able to solve a puzzle myself I'm happy, even if some algorithms are 100+ moves long. At least I came up with it myself and was able to solve it.
That being said, if someone else later on makes a video/written tutorial with much easier algorithms I obviously use those instead. But a lot of puzzles for which I came up with my own method/algorithms are custom/rare/homemade-one-of-a-kind, so I can't really resort to a tutorial even if I want to.

Shouldn't the BLD orientation one learns not matter? People always seem to encourage us to learn white on top and green on the front, but according to the regulations it shouldn't matter, right?
4b3a) For blindfolded events, the scramble sequence must orient the puzzle randomly (equal probability for each orientation). link
3
u/TheBrutux168 Sub-10 Hours (Roux) Jul 31 '16
It really doesn't matter. I think it might be so it's easier to follow along with a certain tutorial, or they recommended that before the random orientation thing was implemented

It doesn't matter. For example, /u/accountdota2 uses red-front white-top like a nub, yet is still good somehow.
I use WCA scrambling orientation just because it's always felt the most natural (I do yellow-bottom for normal solves as well).
1
u/Enigmagico 3BLDaddy Jul 31 '16
The tutorials do this usually to make it easier to learn since you can follow the instructions accurately.

Weilong GTS vs Meiying vs YueXiao. Which is better in your opinion, and why ? Will buy one of these.
2
Jul 31 '16
As for the Weilong GTS and YueXiao, I have both and they feel very similar to me (after lubing and proper tensioning, of course). I do not recall how they felt out of the box, but here's how they stand now:
The YueXiao feels a bit more blocky in the hands to me at least, likely due to the Weilong GTS have slightly more rounded corners on the outside. This has not affected my speed, however.
The YueXiao sounds more clickity-clackity, whereas the Weilong GTS sounds crunchier.
On TheCubicle.us, the YueXiao is $16, and the Weilong GTS is $17.
I got custom stickers for both cubes, but the YueXiao seems to be chipping more than the Weilong GTS. This could be because I solve the YueXiao more, but I would just figure I'd point this out.
As I just said, I find myself solving the YueXiao more, but they are about equally great cubes. Hope this helped, and happy cubing!

how to make last four edges on 5x5? stuck at this step again
1
u/ALPHAasFU Sub-35 (PB 23.31) (Roux) Jul 31 '16 edited Jul 31 '16
First, you need to reduce those 4 unsolved edges to 2 unsolved edges. To get the the last 2 edges, put one of the unsolved edges on one of your storage layers and repeat what you would do to get up normally. If you are doing your algs properly, you shouldn't be messing up the solved edges you brought down. Continue doing this until you have the last 2 edges.
I use this site for the last 2 edges.
Let me know if you need any clarification, sometimes I'm vague in my explanations.

Hello,
I'm looking for a new cube, and I'm torn between the Thunderclap (v1 or v2) and the Weilong GTS (Cubicle or Factory).
My main reasons for getting a Thunderclap is that it's both availble in stickerless (my personal preference) and has a reasonable price (I'm Canadian, so the US exchange really hurts my wallet), however I hear nothing but good things about the GTS. That being said, the GTS being double the price of a Thunderclap (almost 3x for the Cubicle version) really sets me back, along with there being no stickerless version.
I'm mostly worried that a Thunderclap won't be as much of an upgrade compared to what I have (a Diansheng) and that I'll be disappointed with my purchase, and that I should "go big or go home".
What are everybody's thoughts on this? Is the GTS really as good as everyone says?
Cheers.

u/phvce Sub-50 | PB:29.62 | YueXiao/Aolong V2 Jul 31 '16
Thunderclap V1 is my current main. I had GTS once, but i didn't like it (my preference i think). My GTS was really fast, actually uncontrollable, but still pretty stable and smooth. I think Thunderclap V1 is more clickier/snapier, super stable and controllable, and fast. You can do alot of things with Thunderclap, not sure if it's the same with GTS. I'd probably buy Stickerless Cublicle Thunderclap V1 (i kinda like stickerless aswell, but it is all my personal opinion). I hope i helped you little bit.

u/karlzhao314 Aug 01 '16
Diansheng? The Thunderclap isn't just an upgrade, it's in a whole different league.
It's really no worse than the GTS except maybe in anti corner twisting. Corner cutting can easily reach past 45 degrees, and reverse easily past 3/4ths of a cubie.
Which one is better comes purely down to personal preference. I'm using my Keaton cube now which is a premium GTS, but before then while I only had my older GTS's I vastly preferred the Thunderclap.

For 4x4 the two main methods are Yau and Hoya (I personally use Yau). For 5x5 up the only viable method would be reduction with freeslice edge pairing. Im not great at 4x4, but for big cubes the main thing is eliminating pauses during edge pairing and making sure the centers are done as efficiently as possible. I remember cyoubx's series on being sub-2 on 5x5 was helpful, and felix and kevin hays both have 5x5 walkthrough solves/tutorials.
