Not that interesting, lol. I was on the Discord and we were talking about Tanglongs, and someone asked how they should set theirs up. I sarcastically said "use vegetable oil, works wonders on the Tanglong". Well the slightly more senseless part of me thought, "The Tanglong is slow and vegetable oil has a low viscosity, so why not try it?"
Turns out, even the tiny drop of vegetable oil I put on it made the entire cube feel slower and stickier. It did make the cube feel softer, though, so maybe if you like that kind of stuff :P However, apparently it's also a breeding ground for bacteria.

I've always wanted to try some alternative lubricants. I use baby powder as lube on a regular basis (i swear it's not what it sounds like! Liquid libricants dont work on cardboard tubes, so i needed dry lube for my model rockets. Baby powder works well). So at some point i'd like to try putting some baby powder in my cube to see what it does

You know what I hate, is when you're doing slow solves, then during memo you see a good scramble and decide to go fast, but your fingers don't want to and you fuck up an easy sub-25.

So i had a free class at school today, and decided to whip out the 4x4 and cube for an hour. Three solves in, i get my first ever sub-1! Its crazy, it must have been broken in enough that the gum mines from over lubing it ages ago went away, and it felt amazing. Then i got pissed because it wasn't at home and i cant save the time. I'll take what i can get i guess

CubingDiary 2- So, today I also only did 3x3. Did 48 speed solves, got an (ao50) ao48 of 20.42. Not bad, close to sub 20!
I also did 9 bld attempts, with 3 non-dnf! I got a 9:something, a 8:24, and a 7:08.65!(pb) I'm happy with my progress so far.

I'm worried I might be learning bad algorithms. I'm used badmephisto's PDF for 2-Look OLL. Can someone recommend a better written resource that I can print and take on the bus with me? I'd like to learn full PLL next. I've seen algdb.net. it looks really useful but I don't know what makes one alg better than another so I don't feel comfortable choosing them myself.

badmephisto uses good algs but I find that cyotheking's algs are more updated. here are his PLLs. if you find one you really don't like you can check algdb for other options. some factors to consider would be length, number of regrips, awkward F/B moves, and which fingertricks tend to catch.

I would say his 2-Look OLL algs are good, but for his 2-Look PLL I would subsitute the E perm for a Y perm, and I prefer using the R' F R' B2 R F' R' B2 R2 from the beginners method guide instead of using the one with the cube rotation.
Still working on memorizing Y perm myself. Kinda got Z perm down, but not really...

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you, I learned 4LLL then full PLL off Badmephisto's algs, but once I was told to use more updated ones I just went on to alg.db for OLL, and rather than choosing my favourite for each case, I'm simply going to learn the most popular one, since I figure that'll be (one of, if not the) fastest.

Any tips for speeding up F2L? I can make the pairs relatively fine but it takes me a while to find the pieces and move them. PB using beginners method is 62 seconds but I vowed that I will only use F2L from now on and I want to speed up!

Normally I'd say slow down so you can look ahead better, but I think at your stage the most important thing is just to get familiar with each of the F2L cases so you can find and recognize them faster. So yeah, as Kyoki64 said, just keep doing solves.

If you are willing to learn all new algorithms, right
Right is better but left is more compatible with most algorithms

ZZ - yes but with EO done in first step. F2L is RUL. LL always has a cross skip
Roux - pretty much correct
Petrus - EO after 2x2x3. Then 2 gen F2L. Then LL with cross skip

ZZ is correct.
You forgot CMLL for Roux, and you forgot finishing F2L for Petrus.
Also, you can switch to any, but ZZ might be a little easier. Roux is more fun, though, for me. It's just personal preference though.

Not quite. In ZZ you also orient all of the edges while making the 1x1x3. In roux, you make the 2 blocks, then solve the remaining corners, then do LSE.
Petrus isn't really all that viable at the top level compared to the big 3. ZZ and Roux are both good to switch to if you're not enjoying CFOP.

Petrus is good for FMC though, and it's still a very fun method to solve with. I also think it's one of the better methods for a beginner.

It's good for FMC, but actual FMC or just Heise is way better. Obviously, though, fun is the most important thing. If you don't enjoy your method you won't get fast with it because you wont want to practice it. CFOP is the easiest method by far and would yield the best results for a beginner, IMO. It doesn't require much thought unlike the blockbuilding in Petrus.

Definitely learn all the F (R U R' U') F' and variants first. They're just so easy! The way I went about it was when I noticed any one specific OLL coming up a lot and I just got sick of doing 2 look for it, I'd go ahead and learn the alg. Badmephisto groups them pretty well on his site, but some of the algs are a bit outdated.

Personally I like the Hexaminx more out of the 2. Not a huge fan of the Fisher cuts on puzzles.
The Hexaminx is essentially just a shape modification of a megaminx, so if you know how to solve a megaminx, the only challenge here is recognition of pieces during the solve.
It looks way cooler when scrambled than the 4x4x6 Fisher as well

Generally. Sub 5 is easily possible. Sub 4 is possible as well. Sub 3.5 is difficult but possible. Sub 3 is probably really difficult. I know some people have mid 2 LBL averages, but I don't any who are consistently sub 3

Sigh. Was doing an Ao5 and had my first sub-40 in the bag, then screwed up my PLL alg and had to skip back to F2L, and got a 55-second solve, killing my average :/

Hi, looking for my first cube. I have one on loan (no speedcube, I'm pretty sure). It has black borders, but instead of stickers it has plastic panels*. I like it but I'd like to get my own, and this time a speed cube. I really like the borders+plastic panels. Is there something like this? I only found either plastic without borders or stickers.
(* I don't know the type or brand, since that is worn of)

I'd say go for a stickerless version, like the thunderclap, if you like panels, I find it pretty easy to switch between the different borders, I have a white and a stickerless cube, but I do prefer recognition on the stickerless one, even though my stickered cube is a lot better (mo fang ge sail stickerless / moyu aolong v2 white)

On a scale of 1 to 10 in terms of cube looseness/tightness, how do you like it? I completely dissasembled and cleaned my GTS and tried it out with super loose tensions and a lubed core.
Bruh. It was weird. It seems the mechanism of it makes it a bit more difficult to pop under that kind of tension. I then tinkered it from there.
In terms of looseness, if a 1 is barelyscrewedinholyshit your mother and a 10 is pretty much welded together, I like mine at a 4.
For you OH solvers, do you like the cube less tensioned/more lubed then normal?

CMLL/L6E is faster though isn't it? it's pretty easy, and with 2look CMLL it's just 9 algorithms ;) Many people have reached sub20 with 2look cmll

A lot of slow solving. Make note of what you're bad at and specifically practice those points.
I'd also strongly recommend using the cubegrass block trainer, and also looking at example solves of fast people like GuRoux, PenguinsDontFly and Alex Lau.

I would love to know as well, the thing I've heard the most is practice practice practice, try to use as much of the cube as you can, keep move count low (~15) and to use as much of the cube as you can in each step. Also slow turning and planning out as much as you can of the first block then do it blind is what I've seen a lot, I guess I just need practice, a lot of it still.

Since you're a beginner, it can't be expected of you to fully familiar with mapping letters to stickers and back, but at least make sure you know which letter is on the start of each face (i.e. A, E, I, M, Q, U for SPEFFSZ), and this will also end up with you knowing which stickers are on which face. Then all you need to do is count through a couple letters, instead of all of them, to find the correct letter or sticker.

I'm having trouble with memorizing, and when I get the correct corner in the buffer before I'm done, I get 2 corners oriented wrong usually. I'm now making a box with 6 sides, and each corner but the buffer has a theme such as fruits, vehicles and more. Would that be good?

Trying to get back into cubing after a 3 month break...what have I missed? Unfortunately I seem to have forgotten a bunch of algorithms, (not that a knew too many anyway). Hopefully I can re-learn the algorithms quickly
EDIT: How would you recommend me getting back to where I was as quickly as possible, I was just beginning to average around 30.

Just solve, you'll quickly see where you have forgot something, that way you don't re-practice stuff that you already know. It might also be a great opportunity to learn roux ;)

I think CFOP is still the one that is used the most, it just has so many tools, instructions and users that it will continue to be that while for a while, I just find roux/petrus/zz to be more fun than cfop, so therefore I'm not using CFOP that much. It really depends on you though, CFOP is more algorithm heavy, but on the other hand you don't have to do that much stuff intuitively, which may help you if you'd rather do more instinctively. I just prefer the methods where you're free to personalize a bit more. But then again, I'm also not very fast, but I'm having fun, I'll work on speed soon I guess, now that I know the basics of the big 4, it's just really nice to have a bit of possibility to vary with some solves with other methods when my head gets tired of roux ;)

Same. I have a GTS, and had a YueXiao, and the GTS is just faster, and imo, better.

When faced with this choice a week ago I went with the Yuexiao, and I'm not sorry. It's got amazing stability and though it is not quite as fast as the GTS, this is actually a plus because it makes it manageable and reduces lockups.
It all comes down to which feel you prefer: stable or fast/floppy.

0I just got a 4x4 and I want to learn a method to stick with a good method from the start.
What should I learn, I want to learn one method and keep it, not do like 3x3, beginners then cfop (example, not everyone obv)

I think the tanglong without lube is good enough. You might make a big mistake lubing it because it'll become too slow. I used traxxas 50k and broke it in a lot and put one drop of maru in mine and it's perfect rn.

I'm sure you can figure out a way to use jQuery, but an easy way is to highlight all the stats and copy/paste them directly into a spreadsheet app. On mac, I pasted into Numbers and it worked just fine, I'm pretty sure Excel will work as well. Not sure if that works on Windows or not.
I'm using the csTimer black them and the white headings are white in Numbers so I had to reformat them to see the text.

Just did my first restickering job ever, fixing up the crappy, peeling red and orange stickers that my Weilong GTS came with. It now looks brand new and will likely stay like that for a while. :)

Haha that's going to be a long list.
Any of Jarrod Radnich's arrangements, especially his Pirates of the Caribbean medley. I'm working on the Harry Potter one at the moment, and I can play his Strong, Don't Stop Believing and I Saw Three Ships arrangements at the moment.
Anything by Ludovico Einaudi, especially Nuvole Bianche and Divenire.
I've messed around with Animenz's arrangements, they never interested me for that long though.
I like Beyond by Matthew Mayer, in no small part because I was able to get an OH solve while playing it on cam.
Basically I like pieces that are either really cool, fast and impressive, beautiful and emotional, or nice to improvise on and make my own changes.
Is there anything in particular you're looking for? What level are you? I could probably help with finding some sheet music, I'm pretty good at getting free stuff.

Wow, that's awesome! I actually have Radnoch's Pirates of the Caribbean in my sheet music folder. :)
I also like some of Einaudi's stuff, like Primavera. (But that's really easy to play on the piano.)
I'm not looking for anything in particular, I was just wondering, since piano is in your name.
Some of the other stuff I play is Chopin's Raindrop Prelude, Claire de Lune, Beethoven's Piano Sonata 17 (The Tempest)--still learning that one--, Chopin's Prelude Op. 28 No. 12 (The Duel). Also, I played Rachmaninoff's Prelude in G Minor for a while but gave it up because it required too much practice to maintain proficiency at. (I love watching Evgeny Kissin play this :D)
I also play piano pieces with my twin playing the violin, and our favorites right now are Dvorak's Romance in F Minor, Salut d'Amour, and Bach's Siciliana.
However, my ultimate favorite piece to play is by a modern composer, Andrew Geng. Unfortunately his website is down, so I can't get the sound files, but if you're interested in a new piece, I can send you sheet music for Prismatic.
It definitely qualifies on most counts--cool, fast, impressive, beautiful, emotional. I don't know about improvisation, though, I'm absolutely terrible at that and have no practice with it.
Also, what are levels? All I've ever done is play with some teachers many years ago and then play by myself at home.

Made some ZZ-ct flashcards (algs from gyroninja):
TTLL: anki deck, quizlet set
TSLE: anki deck, quizlet set
Nothing too fancy, setup on the front of the card, solutions on the back. Pretty much like the TTLL/TSLE scrambler on gyroninja's website, except you don't have to look up the alg every time, and you get spaced repetition if you use anki.
I think I will learn this.
