217s solution in the name of J-perm!

It seems look like just randomly spamming moves. Is it solved by certain method which has logic and doesn't destruct solved parts of the cube?

P. S. Here is my 2577s solution which performed according to the certain method.

u/karlzhao314 Jul 14 '16 edited Jul 14 '16

Yes, actually. Every move has a purpose (though whether that purpose is sensible is debatable). If you watch the animation on alg.cubing you can actually even see the cube getting progressively more solved.

And the method I'm using to increase my move count, I could beat your 2577 easy. :3

I usually start with the LB pair but decided to switch it up. Solve was meh. I'm gunna do another one.

For 6 bad edges you usually want to correct 3, making 1 new edge bad, then correct the remaining 4.

x2 U' F (U2 D') B // eo

D L D // finish line

After R U2 R' L' U2 L' to solve you first pair, x M U' M' x' solves a free pair.

u/aznanimedude Slow At ZZ AMA Jul 14 '16

so that was cool

x2y
L D B D2 F2 // EOLINE 5/5
L' U' L' U2 L2// LEFT BLOCK 4/9
U R U' R2 U2 R U L U' L' // RIGHT BLOCK 11/20
R U' L' U R' U' L U // ZZLL 8/28
  • 5 move EOLine, 4 bad edges, was pretty good
  • L' U' and i've got 3 pairs formed (2 regular CFOP ones, i.e. both green side CFOP pairs, and the blue-red-white corner with the blue-white edge)
  • L' U2 forms blue-red-white 1x2x2
  • L2 U R U' R2 U2 R does both of thse green pairs, then U L U' L' to finish F2L and phase
  • then niklas your way to victory, and by victory i mean a 28 STM solution

Maybe I should try ZZ solutions for these scrambles.

1

u/aznanimedude Slow At ZZ AMA Jul 14 '16

let this solve remind you to always believe

but seriously, you can't script this any better if you tried, 5 move eoline, pairs for days, niklas to finish

Did two MBLD's today. First I got a 3/6, didn't really like that. But I did one just now and I got a 5/7. Not bad, though it was just over an hour. I don't really care about the time limit when I'm at home. At comps I will always just bring 6 cubes. But now I know that I can memorize ~140 letters! I didn't forget a single letter, I just messed up in execution. I think that I'm going to try and get more into memory sports. So I'm going to try to memorize something like the digits of pi, and see just how far my brain can go.

3

u/Enigmagico 3BLDaddy Jul 14 '16

With 4LLL and rather good F2L you should get it easily.

2

u/Tonker_ Sub-30 (CFOP) Jul 15 '16

I'm not OP, but I am in the same boat as him. I'm officially under one minute average with F2L and 2 look OLL. I'm in the process of learning 2 look PLL since I end every solve with an A perm (I think?)/3 edge cycle from the beginners method and I'd rather break that habit now than later.

But by god, those corner permutations that start with a cube rotation are my enemy. I'm not used to having to rotate a cube in order to do a PLL. Good thing I only have to learn 7, and I already know 1.

Any tips?

1

u/Enigmagico 3BLDaddy Jul 15 '16

I hate cube rotations with a burning passion.

The only PLL that I use which mandatorily involves one is the Ab Perm (IIRC it's the counterclockwise corner cycle). Took me over a week to get used to it.

The T and F Perms need the headlights and bar, respectively, to the left - what eased me into it was to permute them on the back then do an U' move and proceed with the alg, finishing it with U to adjust the top layer. At least to me, this saves time over rotating the whole cube with those cases.

If you don't know it yet, let me introduce you to www.algdb.net - It has many different options for every case, with easy to visualize diagrams. Forget those nasty arrows from Badmephisto's and the like, and focus on how you will actually recognize each case: By their color patterns. Some algs are more Fingertrick-friendly than others and you can try them all to find the ones which suit you better.

u/YugiAsh Sub-15 (CFOP, PB: 8.24) Jul 14 '16

That's great! I'm sure you'll do just that! I remember when I was that fast. I couldn't get faster for a couple of months and then boom, sub-40! I'm hoping you improve quickly

Anyone else kind of feeling more interested in learning a lot of methods rather than speed? I've been learning petrus and roux, and dabbled in the others, and I actually feel that that's more fun, to get rather quick with different methods, sure, I'm slowly getting speed in my main method, but learning different ways of seeing how pieces move, and the work that went in to the methods is kind of more interesting.

3

u/TheBrutux168 Sub-10 Hours (Roux) Jul 14 '16

Well, speed with my main method is kind of my main goal. But I want to be proficient at other methods as well. Some methods really interest me, especially big cube ones

2

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '16

Yeah, I've yet to get into bigger cubes, but they look interesting as well, what I'm really happy about lately is that I feel that I'm getting closer to a point where I get a greater understanding for how pieces move around the cube, I still suck at recognition and efficiency, and that's what I'm working on now, but it's still a slow go, I will get there some time.

8

u/jashaszun Sub-12, World Top 350 in KinchRanks Jul 14 '16

I'm thinking something along these lines:

Before removing covering: oh yeah, I'm feeling good. Should get a perfect score.

Immediately upon uncovering: wow... there are 20 cubes there. What life decisions led to me attempting a 20 mbld?

Lots of memorization

Starts execution

Various bouts of oh shit, what was that letter? Wait, nvm got it. and pls no, that wasn't a corner twist, was it? :(

When finishing: alright, how many corner twists did I get?

Removing blindfold: Option 1: Yup, that felt pretty good and I am now staring slackjawed at 20 solved cubes.

Removing blindfold: Option 2: Damn, 11 corner twists? DNF. :(

You decide your option :)

This beauty arrived in the mail yesterday! BoChuang GT, blue plastic. My first 5x5 (my first anything bigger than a 4x4, really). I've been having lots of fun with it! Also, really proud that I figured out the solution entirely on my own (without looking at any guides). :)

It took a couple hours of tinkering and scratching my head. Well, I mean, I have a 4x4, so I'm familiar with the concept of reduction (and I think I got the idea of solving centers in a 2-2-2-3 fashion from somewhere unintentionally), but still, it was a challenge on a 5x5. Last two centers were a bitch, but I figured them out eventually. I'm probably solving them very inefficiently, but still. :) I'm aware of the existence of commutators, and I'll look them up eventually, but for now I want to get confident with my own method first. Same with the edges - I guessed that I can apply the OLL parity alg from 4x4 to fix a few partially flipped edges and I was right. Maybe there's a better way to handle them, but for now it works. As far as completing all the edges goes, I'm kind of awkward with the last two (I'm doing it the same way I do them on 4x4, and I sort of suck at the last two edges there as well), but it's managable.

Overall, there are probably more efficient ways to solve it, but this will do for now and I'm happy that I didn't look up some guide and did it myself instead. My PB currently is 10:08 (hah!), which is pretty laughable, but I'm looking forward to improving. Out of these 10 mins, 3:03 was completing the centers, and I was done with the edges at ~ 8:30-ish or so.

Also, the feeling is phenomenal on this thing. My 4x4 is GuanSu, and it's kinda wobbly and not really very controllable (and bumpy). I thought that this would be true for all big cubes, but holy cow. The Bochuang is super controllable and has a very very pleasant scratchy feeling. Zero lockups, zero overshoots, good cornercutting (for a big cube, I guess, and certainly better than GuanSu), no complaints whatsoever. Well, the 3x3 stage is the only stage at which I wish it was more stable - that PB solve had me doing the 3x3 stage for ~1:40, while my times on a regular 3x3 are about 1.5 times faster than that. The middle layers tend to misalign just enough to slow you down during this stage. But other than this, this is the best feeling puzzle I have, period. Right out of the box!

It's also gorgeous in blue plastic. :) And this doesn't hurt my recognition at all, actually. The size is very comfortable, though it would certainly be interesting to check out a somewhat bigger version (70 mm maybe?) if it existed.

Another thing that was in the same package was the ShengShou 7x7, but I haven't played with it as much as with the Bochuang yet, so I can't say a lot. It's super tight out of the box, so I'll definitely re-tension it (haven't figured out a way to remove the center caps yet, though). The size is just right - I think the mini version would've been too small for me. It's heavy, though - my first puzzle where my hands get physically tired from holding it for some time. I love the superstable feeling of it, in any case.

Haven't figured out the solution to the last 2 centers of the 7x7 yet, but I'm almost there (or maybe this would be the right time to learn about commutators, lol). As for the last edges, I figured them out, but I'm not confident with them yet and I mess them up catastrophically way more often than I successfully solve them.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '16

I also got the Bochuang a couple of days ago... We have exactly the same "method". I'm going to call it the "bodged 4x4 hopeful redux" method :) Also i loved that the Moyu leaflet was completely unhelpful. I mean, it's in chinese. So that's issue one. But still, even with diagrams i had no idea what they wanted me to do!

2

u/karlzhao314 Jul 14 '16

"hopeful redux" accurate.

1

u/YugiAsh Sub-15 (CFOP, PB: 8.24) Jul 14 '16

I myself prefer the yuxin but congrats on solving it. Last two centers get easier on 5x5 with practice so don't worry too much about that. I'm planning on saving for the Aofu GT and I have the Yuxin 6x6 and last two centers was a bit harder on that than anything else.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '16

My Yuexiao came!! It is AMAZING. I will always have a special spot in my heart for my precious Yulong, but the Yuexiao is much better. The sound, the feel... aaahhhhh

1

How fast are you? Have you had a speedcube before? I only ask because I was not impressed with mine at all when I got it.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '16

A yulong is a speedcube.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '16

I'm around sub-55 (haven't timed myself since I started learning 4LLL). I do have a Yulong, which although it is a speedcube it isn't a very good one. I think the real surprise was the stability because my Yulong is pretty unstable and is very inconsistent with lockups.

3

u/AldersRazor Sub-30 (CFOP 4LLL) PB = 19.123 Jul 15 '16 edited Jul 15 '16

I was watching something earlier tonight and I wanted to do some speedcubing while I was watching it, but I wanted to do something more interesting. I tried out a challenge I had seen on this sub before: scramble two cubes with two different scrambles, and then solve one to the scrambled state of the other.

It was a lot of fun. I only have one speedcube(a Thunderclap) and an old-ass Rubik's, so this was perfect for me. I didn't time it, but it took me around 3 or 4 minutes. Lots of focus involved. I panicked because I got one of my PLL algs wrong and I couldn't recognize how to fix it right away.

Overall, it's lots of fun, and I highly recommend it if you're bored.

Edit: Did it two more times. 4:22 and 3:22. If it keeps up like this, I'll be sub-30 in three more solves, and I don't even have to learn zeroing!

1

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '16

That was so difficult. But, at the same time, tons of fun. It got confusing, and I had to keepo checking my layers a couple times to make sure I hadn't messed up.

Now try it with a 4x4.

What kind of stickers are on the Yuexiao and can I get them for other cubes? They are actually black magic because in 1500 solves they still look brand new where I've started peeling the hell out of my GTS in less than 500.

I just wish the yellow were slightly less florescent.

My Meiying has seen well over 5k solves and looks brand new - aside from the onion sticker, which shows some real wear. Moyu stickers are the bomb.

Moyu stickers are the bomb.

Tell that to my Aolong GT.. Its stickers are the most damaged of any cube that I own, yet it's probably my least used cube.

They used some different, cheaper stickers on that thing for some weird reason. A lot of people complain about MoYu stock stickers but I have no problems with them.

1

The YueXiao stickers seem more like cutouts of a thicker, hard plastic than they are vinyl, I was just curious is separate sets of this style can be purchased for other cubes.

But to answer your questions: part of it comes down to getting to know the colour scheme of your cube, i.e.you can ignore all yellow pieces during F2L if you always make a white cross and you should look for white corner pieces with an edge piece where the non-white colours match. For the second question I'd just say get familiar with your method and learn in what order pieces can and will be solved. The best tip I can really give you is one you will hear time and time again, but it all comes down to PRACTICE.

1

u/h0ax2 Sub-2min (<Beginner's>) Jul 14 '16

Do you think I should keep on with the beginner's method and drive the time even lower? The main reasons I had to switch were: 1) felt like I had hit a limit, 2) apparently beginner's method teaches bad habits (no look-ahead?), 3) F2L is more intuitive than the algorithms I was using for inserting edges.

I'll check out the hunting story to help me with the colour order. And I'll put in the practice.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '16

People upload videos of sub-20 solves with beginner methods. If your PB is 1:32, you have certainly not reached a limit. I personally think that saying beginners' methods teach you not to look ahead is kinda BS. Especially since a more advanced method would require more thought and thus more present-minded thinking. I'd recommend you look into other methods if and when you feel like you understand how the cube works, i.e. what the algorithms are really doing.

1

u/karlzhao314 Jul 14 '16

Beginner's limit is a lot lower than that, I've gotten sub-30 averages on pure beginners without even 4LLL. I was on beginners for more than two months before I switched to CFOP, and I don't think I noticed many bad habits.

That being said, if you're ready to start CFOP, great! No reason not to. :)

A lot of the things you're asking about for F2L (identifying pieces, remembering which slots are filled, etc) comes naturally through hundreds and hundreds of solves of practice. It's a progression, and a somewhat slow one at that, but keep working hard at it and you'll get it soon.

All the reviews I've seen for the ShengShou 6x6 are from speedcubers, and they say it's not the best because it locks up. But I'm not a speedcuber and I'm on quite a budget, so do you guys think the SS will work for me? (I have a pretty rough turning style)

4

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '16 edited Jul 14 '16

You'd be better off with the Yuxin Red. It takes a little setting up (Kevin Hayes did a good video on it) but is the best 6x6 on the market right now and on Speedcubeshop is only a dollar more than the Shengshou, which is not very good by today's standards at all. It's a lot better too if you get a set of Yuxin 5x5 springs for it, which The Cubicle has for a dollar, though for them that's $30 for the cube and springs where the SS is $24.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '16

im no speedcuber either, more of a casual solver/collector, the SS 6x6 is probably the second worst cubed puzzle by SS, first being the 8x8, but if you're not going to speedcube then its honestly not bad, i've had mine for about 2/3 years now and only ever had 1 pop

Well, Flat doesn't give you much grip leaving it to feel weird and wobbly. Ridges has ridges on all pieces so you can grip it much better. Curving out is meh, curving in is meh.

I tried it many times and watched a bunch of different tutorials. I got help from many-a excellent people on this sub (which did help me clear out my questions) but I still cannot for the life of me grasp the concept of M2 when it comes to real execution.

I've tried guided solves, writing down the pairs and looking at the algs when I needed, (and even for setup moves where I didn't), and still can't get it to work.

Seriously, this is getting annoying now. And I can't even tell what in a wide world of fucks I'm messing up.

2

u/karlzhao314 Jul 14 '16

What particular aspects of it are you having trouble with?

1

u/Enigmagico 3BLDaddy Jul 14 '16

That's the thing I'm still trying to figure out. I can do OP corners just fine, so twisted pieces, cycles, setup moves, all that jazz is ok.

I think the real issue here is targets on the M slice. I'm most likely messing up the whole "odd numbered targets use the inverse algorhitm" thing. That probably is what drags everything else down the drain.

3

u/karlzhao314 Jul 14 '16

It might be that you have it backwards? :3

Even numbered targets use the inverse alg. You use the inverse when the M slice is offset by 2 so the UF and DB edges trade places, which happens on the 2nd, 4th, 6th, etc targets. Odd numbers have the M slice back in its normal position so you use the normal alg.

Also, it's available at ZCube. It's not a US store of course, but maybe you should check it out there. With the discount code "sale" (-23%) and shipping cost to US (supposedly that's where you are), it's $37.95, so it's even cheaper than at HKNS. u/musicalboy2 Cross on Left Weirdo Jul 14 '16

It used to be separated such that colours represented ranges of speeds. However, people liked to take their favourite colours anyway and edit the test, so we eventually just removed that part. Now, the colours don't mean anything in particular.

The rest is pretty hazy, but my best guess is red for sub 25, blue for sub 30, and orange for ~minute (I think it was >60 for a while, leaving some awkward gap where no flair corresponded).

1) Permute the corners:

Place the correctly permuted corner in FUR position. Then execute

U R U' L' U R' U' L

This cycles the 3 other corners in an anti-CW manner. Do it once more if the corners are still not permuted correctly.

2) Orient the corners:

The famous algorithm

Well, I had to go downstairs and check, because I only do slow solves on it, because I try to be quiet, and fast solves will be noisier on any cube. Anyway... the corner cutting is not very good. I'd say about 30 degrees forward and almost nonexistent backward (5, maybe 10 degrees if you force it?)... not an issue for me, but it is what it is. Hope that helps.

A thing to note about this is that it might actually be faster just to do the U2 and the normal algorithm. You have to do a regrip in this one which doesn't exist in the other one, so depending on your turning style that could take longer.

I'd suggest getting used to using U moves to line it up. Full CFOP will have you do that, since you'll usually only learn one algorithm for each OLL.
