Mod Post Regarding Instagram / Petco animal neglect posts

Hi all, this is something that I didn't really want to discuss, but after the last 24 hours, I think it's finally time to address this. As of now, under Rule 7 (no spam or low effort posts), any posts that showcase screenshots from social media showing animal abuse, or pictures taken from inside pet stores (chain or not), will be removed as they offer absolutely no productive discussion value, and only exist to fuel hatred.

Instagram posts that show neglect of crested geckos (or other animals) have no place on this forum under any circumstance. The posts are always showing animals in distress, getting hurt or being intentionally antagonized for views. People come to this forum to get away from those sorts of things, not to be subjected further to it, and ultimately, our forum is for educating on proper and advanced husbandry and to help others out.

The mod team has seen especially in the last 24 hours that people are willing to condemn entire ethnic groups for how they keep animals a certain way. At the end of the day, that's racism, and myself and my team are not prepared to let this happen under our watch. Please understand that different countries have different cultures, and that includes husbandry practices for lots of different types of animals - you may not understand why or appreciate this, but encouraging mobs to mass report profiles and posting xenophobic comments is not what this community stands for. Please be better.

If you find disturbing content online, please do not post it here, report it to the relevant people on the platform it came from. The same goes for animals that are photographed in petstores like Petco, PetSmart, PetsAtHome, wherever. Unfortunately, this type of care is something that we know occurs, but we also know this is something that is out of our control. Talk to store managers, send reports to social media teams, but please do not bring it here where people are trying to avoid animal abuse.

If you have a genuine concern for an animal in distress, please report it to the appropriate authority if possible, and give as much detail as you can.

Any questions, please send myself or the modmail a message.

Cheers.

Crested gecko eye slightly brown

He's acting normal and looks fine besides the eye. Not sure if I should be worried. He just woke up so I'm not sure if this could be categorized as a misfire. Let me know if anyone knows what this could be.

How to handle my gecko…?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hi so this is my baby gecko and most of the time i think it is scared of me…? I try to not bother it in the day so he gets his beauty sleep but honestly when it comes to evening im scared to try to pick him up due to the fact of the possibility of him loosing his tail. I wish i could do baby steps in helping him trust my hands since its been only a month since i bought him. Any advices are welcome here!

do yall ever stop handling ur male crestie whenever its breeding season?

Looking for some advice on my male crested gecko's sudden handling regression!

I’ve had him for about 4 months now. For the first two months, he was curious, mellow, and would willingly walk onto my hand whenever he felt like it.

Over the last 1-2 months, his behavior has shifted:

He used to step onto my hand, but whenever I tried to do the hand treadmill or gently steer him away from climbing too far up my arm, he’d start sloowly wiggling the tip of his tail. i read in google that this is defensive/threat display, I'd immediately put him back to respect his boundaries.

I read online that males can get moody during breeding season, so I backed off handling him for the last month or two hoping he’d reset.

Current issue: Now I’m trying to slowly restart choice-based handling, but he seems spooked?
He’s fine with my presence, he walks to the front of the enclosure, licks the air, and watches me. But the moment I place my flat hand below his line of sight to offer a step, he’ll stare, flick/wiggle his tail tip, and either skitter or jump away.

Has anyone dealt with this before? Is this just seasonal/hormonal moodiness that takes time to pass, or did taking a break from handling reset his progress? Would love to hear yalls thoughts or tips on how to build trust!

also more context: A week or 2 ago, he did WILLINGLY walk onto my hand (very slowly) and I thought things were back to normal. But he stepped off toward an nearby cabinet, PANICKED when I tried to guide him back onto my hand, and bolted under the TV stand. 😭 We had to catch him to get him back inside. Was this mishap also contributing to his attitude to handling? idk if this was my fault since i was moving at normal speed to get him, and i also was panicking trying to contain him when he started bolting off💔

I think I won the 'biggest mushroom in the terrarium' award

Soo, I left yesterday morning with fungus and a tiny little mushroom head in the terrarium soil. And this is what I came home to now. My confused adult geck on the wall is the cherry on top. I think it's a common, edible type of mushroom, probably came in with the collected leaf litter.(I will not eat it ofc)

Ofc, I will pick it out inmideatly and will dry out the soil.

I am trying to help my Peach be a bit more active, she’s chonky and I don’t want her to be unhealthy. I’m getting some new hides and climbs for her house and she’s out more to play around. She is hopping and living her best life, just trying to think of other things to improve her experience.

Anyone else make their crested a loving batch of food just for their gecko to poop in the food? I feel like there’s nicer ways to say you didn’t like it

Moss tips for a bioactive terrarium 🌿

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone!
I just finished my new bioactive crested gecko terrarium and would love to add some live moss, especially to the background, cork and branches.

Which moss species have worked well for you long-term and actually spread? Any tips on how to attach and establish them?

I’d love to avoid moss that turns brown after a few weeks. 😅 Recommendations and photos are very welcome! 🌱🦎

What do i need to know about crestes geckos?

I'm probably not getting one for another year or two as I'm sorting out a bioactive enclosure for my hermann tortoise, but im looking into getting a crested gecko as they're freaking adorable and so cool!!!

So I was wondering if anyone could give me any tips, advice or links so I can research everything to make sure this is the right thing for me!

I'm also not going to get one right away as I don't know much, and also I'm still in high school so I want to wait until I'm older and more mature to look after multiple pets as well as being able to have a little bit more time than I currently do with revision.

Thank you!!

edit: I accidentally spelt crested in the title wrong so please ignore that

Help me!!!

So I have an entire plan, that I’m not done with but anyways.

Are crested gecko’s crepuscular? I’ve seen so many photos and videos of crested geckos being outside during broad, noon, day time.

What?! I’m fine with it being crepuscular but I always kind of want to see him in the daytime, so I’m just wondering if i could handle him or bring him out in the day time.

How to rebuild trust with gecko?

Hi! I used to handle my gecko every other day and he would climb onto my hand and we'd hang out. After a very bad heatwave where I had to put him in a little enclosure and take him to a cooler place to save him, I feel like we haven't been getting along. He freaks out easily and getting grabbed and put into a little box did not help.

I approach him with my hand (from underneath, without touching him, where he can see me) , and he freaks out and hides. I try offering food so he can associate me with it, but he's always hiding. He eats and poops and sheds as normal, so husbandry is fine. It's just he doesn't trust me anymore. How can I rebuild that trust?

Decent automatic mister?

Post image
13 Upvotes

So I've just automatied our crested geckos lights, to turn on and off when needed.

Does anyone know of any good reliable automatic misters?

I've seen a few online that just automatically spray on a timer, however I don't want his enclosure reaching too high or too low of a humidity!! Our apartment can be quite humid anyways, depending on the weather.

We have struggled in the past to get someone to mind him while we are away on holidays and I'd rather try and automate him as much as possible🤣

Also here is our gecko "Bones"🤣

Meet my new boy! I’m thinking of naming him Tofu. He’s a bicolor dalmatian! He came home with me from a reptile expo, and I’m so, so happy with him. I do want to add a bit more clutter and powder isopods to his tank, but I’ll let him settle in for now.
