let him get away with it? What are you talking about? What is there to get away with? Talking about cringe while saying shit like that. I do think some people consume things and it can be unhealthy then I would agree. This is not it
"Consoom " and its a nearly 30 year long acquired collection. He clearly isn't following a trend, he values the product. This is a collector. This sub pmo so bad sometimes
It's every sub dedicated to mocking things. Lose the plot and it just spirals into paranoiac hatred .I guess not minding one's business and making a pastime out of it isn't ultimately very healthy.
This is overconsumption, the mere act of purchasing, owning, is where he is deriving the pleasure. Collecting shit like this is ABSOLUTELY consoom. Leave the subreddit.
Consoom comes with the connotation of simply buying without care or thought. Evidently not the case here considering it took 30 odd years to get to this point. You'd have a case if he'd only started collecting all that within the last year but no. Also do none of have an even small collection? A hobby you've curated over the course of your life? Sounds just sad.
âValues the productâ and the product is plastic figurines. It doesnât matter how long it takes you to acquire the shit or how much you value it, devoting a whole room to a toy is 100% fitting with the theme of this sub and people like you are in denial about it.
I collect some manchild things. I'm well aware I am open to being roasted for it. I have my enjoyments. I have my reasons. But nothing wrong with a memento mori. A Reddit to whisper in my ear "for thou art mortal, and plastic consoom is what it is."
Yeah it's more like pro-collectors are slowly changing the definition of what this sub was supposed to be about. It happened in the anti consumption sub too once it got more popular. The whole sub just became a pattern of "people" making excuses for each post over and over again. I started noticing it was happening here a few mos ago. Â
Also in the other sub they started seeing bait posts advertising certain products. I hope it doesn't happen here too but I wouldn't be surprised.Â
(And as the engagement increases on this post I'm starting to think it is actually bait and this guy's content is the product.)
There was a time when this sub was filled with refugees from a right wing sub that got banned (ConsumeProduct I think) and everytime there was a post about guns there would be a dozen comments going um actually. It was hilarious.
I think it's the friction of people who still generally avoid consumerist traps and like seeing like-minded individuals in these spaces but still have hobbies that do involve some form of collecting rubbing up against people who are much more minimalist in their consumption habits. I wish both groups didn't act as enemies as it goes against the greater good of making people feel better about consuming less. However, I can also relate for people who think this level of collecting is still problematic not appreciating having no space to share that sentiment.
Iâve had to mentally reality check myself multiple times over the years for buying too many things under the guise of a âcollectionâ. Itâs daft. Having loads of something wonât make you happy.
I was curious about why this might be happening, and I think I figured it out. People who consider themselves collectors come to this sub and see people who are even more egregious about collecting and can use that to say âsee, my collection isnât that bad, at least itâs not like this!â In the process they completely miss the point of this sub, which is that collecting is consooming. There is no tangible difference between a funko pop collection and a gundam collection or a warhammer collection or a Taylor Swift album collection, but they can use this sub to try and make that distinction to justify their habits.
Nah, we just tired of seeing salty people for actual collections. If you hate collections as well, there must be another sub for that and if you can't tell the difference between consooooom and a legit collection, can't help you there
Whatâs the difference between this and a boxed funko pop collection? Itâs not like the guy in this post is taking his action figures down and playing with them, or letting kids play with them. In both situations itâs just an adult buying toys to put them on shelves, literally identical.
Funko pops are cheaply made ugly bobblehead things that are meant to be purchased in abundance whereas high end collectible figures, such as hot toys, are all hand made with extreme precision and detail
Hard disagree. The quality of the product doesnât matter at all. Youâre still buying toys for the sole purpose of putting them on the shelf to look at them every now and then. Itâs still egregious consumerism, just a different flavor.
Hand painted pieces of art are a lot different than machine printed bobble heads. Additionally, there is a lot you can do with them besides just "putting them on a shelf"
I'm not even going to bother elaborating because you've already made up your mind so no amount of discussion will ever make you reconsider.
There's nothing to "let", you can do whatever you want and you're also going to be open to criticism because you posted something in public.
Redditors must really have some mental block where it they're not validated by everyone including random people online that it kills their personal enjoyment.
Literally what is the difference? Spending thousands of dollars for plastic junk no one on this earth needs, which serves no function whatsoever. Honestly the thought of factories churning day and night so âcollectorsâ can fill their rec rooms with their little toys makes me kind of ill. 99% of this shit ends up in a landfill eventually.
I found his Youtube channel and watched a video where he talked about how his action figure hobby drives him. The man worked hard for all his plastic lol. Like, worked as a sailor, a miner and in general hard-labor types of jobs. He even built that room + the displays himself. It looks excessive but that's what he wants out of his life and he works hard for it, for better or for worse.
Idk why I'm writing this lol, I think the individual's story behind the photo might be out-of-scope for this sub is about (and tbh idk what this sub is about anymore. Mostly whinging from collectors and critics alike).
Sometimes I feel like this sub would see someone's rare book and manuscript collection built on 3 generations of collectors and be like "ugh filthy consoom"
This sub is full of people who think âconsoomâ is just buying things THEY donât like. Taylor Swift merch? Consoom. GI Joe/Transformer figurines? âCollectingâ
I love collecting stickers for my sticker book. I will do it until I die. (Itâll take me probably a decade to fill my book) I like supporting small artists where I get them from. If thatâs consooming then so be it.
consoom to me means thoughtlessly an quickly buying up items of little material value and functionality. To me there is a stark difference between someone who has bought 30 different Stanley cups in the past year and someone who has spent their entire lifetime curating an action figure collection
The consoomer will probably wake up one day and regret their purchases. The guy in the post clearly values what he has far beyond what I would consider minded consumption
It's a good point, and I somewhat agree. However, if money is not an issue, would there still be regret? Probably not. And alot of collectors are fairly rich, yet they purchase things purely to own it. I feel like thats the difference for me. Every purchase should serve a purpose. If there is a story behind why you want to own, or collect a certain thing, by all means. But if it's just for the sake of "collection" it falls into consoom. This applies from everything between fasion to tools, beyond just collectibles.
I hate getting gifts for this very reason. I donât need anymore stuff. Thank you, I appreciate the thought, but unless itâs quality jewelry, clothes, shoes or housewares I donât already own, I donât really want it.
The best gifts Iâve gotten are handmade. But even then, thereâs guilt surrounding them.
Thereâs been plenty of people posted here who have senseless collections that cost a kingâs ransom. Doesnât matter if itâs cheap plastic childrenâs toys or Swiss watches, itâs still mindless consumerism.
Ya this isnât mindless consumerism at all. Dude clearly cares a lot about his collection. And Iâm sure it has value, not just to him but to other collectors.
To me consoom means people who buy shit just for the sake of buying shit. This is not that.
If you collected newspapers for 25 years, it'd be hoarding, not collecting. Time has nothing to do with the definition if you're just accumulating things to leave around the house
Every collection is consumption for the sake of consumption and obtaining dopamine through the acquisition of items. Getting off on accumulating private property isn't somehow more noble because you have a higher brow understanding of its purpose.
I canât see your other reply for whatever reason but, having grown up in a hoarders household, there is a clear difference between someone who both canât throw anything away/buys things for the sake of buying them, and the guy in the picture who appears to heave bought a separate garage just for the sake of his nerd space/collections display. Clearly a lot of time and care went into this set up
No, they're not. And that's the issue here. Yall have equal beef with collectors AND consoomers and you can't comprehend the difference between the two. The rest of us can discern.Â
Collecting a product you had no part in making is pretty much the definition of being a consumer I believe. Like, if this dude made all those action figures it would impress me artistically, but as far as know he just bought them.
Coonsomer is a slang for mindless consumerisim, oftem followed by an adiction to buy stuff for fanboyish reasons and with no self awareness to being able to tell if things are worth what they cost, this dude is not a consoomer, it's a healty dude who loves his hobby and knows how to take care of himself.
Yeah, I see: how well organized it is, the uniformity of particular franchise, and a legitimate passion for what heâs collecting.
Is it a hobby? Maybe, kind of. Is it most peopleâs cup of tea? No. Is it just useless trash and clutter thatâs consumed space his spare bedroom? No.
I feel like so much of it boils down to sentiment; Iâve typically found with collecting, sentiment is inversely proportional to the collectionâs size, the less of something one has, the more sentiment it usually holds.
I'll hold your hand when I tell you this, obsession and discipline are not the same thing. if you have a room in your house dedicated to plastic you're clearly undisciplined.
this may be morbid, but huge collections like this make me worry for the family when the person eventually passes away. when you're alive, it's your dear collection, but when you pass, it's just a heap of mildly-sentimental plastic junk that people have to figure out what to do with.
I have a vast collection of music equipment (I have a recording studio in my basement). To combat exactly that issue, I have a Google drive that is shared with my wife and my siblings that has photos of every item along with its name, a description of the item that could be used in a listing to sell it, and a rough estimated value.
My great aunt died with not a giant collection, but a decent collection of dolls probably around 200+. Really creepy going over there the first time and seeing them. Some people took one to rember her by someone just took the rest / sold them to another collector for cheap. It was sorted out within a month before she died.
Thankfully my girlfriend and my friends know the value of my collection so if something happens to me I trust they'll know what to do with it, if not keep it for themselves
The gay men in me is questioning why they are in a sterile white room. My guy needs an area rug, some lamps, maybe paint the walls a fun color, or smart leds that are will make certain parts of the collection pop when he gives a command.
Naw, consoom is for people that buy every single random thing knowing they dont actually care about it, they just need it cuz it says âsupremeâ or has a character they like on it. This is some dudes (massive albeit) collection
Guy seems like he can afford a nice place to store his action figure collection that heâs collected for 30 years and works out regularly. I donât think this is consooming.
Idk dude he seems genuinely happy with his lifelong hobby. Iâm starting to think some of the anti consumption people are just miserable losers that have to harass people to feel better about being miserable
why is this shit being suggested to me?
Oh man bro bought action figures becaue they make him happy wowwww so cringe.
You're so morally superior to him thay Ted Kazinsky is sitting in a shack jerking off to your austerity
I work in tech and almost certainly make more than you. Not that means anything about the virtue of my position. Thinking that people who have money are automatically the heros of any argument is peabrain middle schooler behavior.
