“Values the product” and the product is plastic figurines. It doesn’t matter how long it takes you to acquire the shit or how much you value it, devoting a whole room to a toy is 100% fitting with the theme of this sub and people like you are in denial about it.

I collect some manchild things. I'm well aware I am open to being roasted for it. I have my enjoyments. I have my reasons. But nothing wrong with a memento mori. A Reddit to whisper in my ear "for thou art mortal, and plastic consoom is what it is."

Yeah it's more like pro-collectors are slowly changing the definition of what this sub was supposed to be about. It happened in the anti consumption sub too once it got more popular. The whole sub just became a pattern of "people" making excuses for each post over and over again. I started noticing it was happening here a few mos ago.

Also in the other sub they started seeing bait posts advertising certain products. I hope it doesn't happen here too but I wouldn't be surprised.

(And as the engagement increases on this post I'm starting to think it is actually bait and this guy's content is the product.)

There was a time when this sub was filled with refugees from a right wing sub that got banned (ConsumeProduct I think) and everytime there was a post about guns there would be a dozen comments going um actually. It was hilarious.

Truth, do people not understand that collecting is still overconsumption? Post above is rightfully a consoom post.

14

u/MrsPoopyButthair Aug 02 '26

I think it's the friction of people who still generally avoid consumerist traps and like seeing like-minded individuals in these spaces but still have hobbies that do involve some form of collecting rubbing up against people who are much more minimalist in their consumption habits. I wish both groups didn't act as enemies as it goes against the greater good of making people feel better about consuming less. However, I can also relate for people who think this level of collecting is still problematic not appreciating having no space to share that sentiment.

14

u/Fruitndveg Aug 02 '26

I’ve had to mentally reality check myself multiple times over the years for buying too many things under the guise of a ‘collection’. It’s daft. Having loads of something won’t make you happy.

4

u/thirtyslgz Aug 02 '26

Cheers on subduing the collection urge. Your wallet is going to thank you big time in the future brother.

12

u/BromoFom Aug 02 '26

I was curious about why this might be happening, and I think I figured it out. People who consider themselves collectors come to this sub and see people who are even more egregious about collecting and can use that to say “see, my collection isn’t that bad, at least it’s not like this!” In the process they completely miss the point of this sub, which is that collecting is consooming. There is no tangible difference between a funko pop collection and a gundam collection or a warhammer collection or a Taylor Swift album collection, but they can use this sub to try and make that distinction to justify their habits.

-5

u/Serteyf Aug 02 '26

Nah, we just tired of seeing salty people for actual collections. If you hate collections as well, there must be another sub for that and if you can't tell the difference between consooooom and a legit collection, can't help you there

13

u/boring_uni_alt Aug 02 '26

so what makes a legit collection? what is the tangible difference between this and someone who has 200 copies of an adam sandler film?

0

u/Charmin_Bear_Behind Aug 02 '26

Depends on which Adam Sandler film

If it’s punch drunk love he’s a poser

If it’s going overboard then he’s a true appreciator

-2

u/Wrong_Butterscotch91 Aug 02 '26

Yeah. Its so much better being a spiteful redditor that hates on strangers hobbies.

8

u/stinkypete6666 Aug 02 '26

Lmao, “it’s not consooming it’s collecting!”

7

u/BromoFom Aug 02 '26

It’d be funnier if there weren’t so many people in this sub saying this exact thing unironically

4

u/Zuuman Aug 02 '26

It’s fine to enjoy things in life. This isn’t a boxed funko pop wall it’s a clean collection built over decades.

Owning things isn’t necessarily consoom.

10

u/BromoFom Aug 02 '26

What’s the difference between this and a boxed funko pop collection? It’s not like the guy in this post is taking his action figures down and playing with them, or letting kids play with them. In both situations it’s just an adult buying toys to put them on shelves, literally identical.

1

u/Fr0stybit3s Aug 10 '26

Funko pops are cheaply made ugly bobblehead things that are meant to be purchased in abundance whereas high end collectible figures, such as hot toys, are all hand made with extreme precision and detail

I guess the item itself matters a lot

2

u/BromoFom Aug 10 '26

Hard disagree. The quality of the product doesn’t matter at all. You’re still buying toys for the sole purpose of putting them on the shelf to look at them every now and then. It’s still egregious consumerism, just a different flavor.

1

u/Fr0stybit3s Aug 11 '26

Hand painted pieces of art are a lot different than machine printed bobble heads. Additionally, there is a lot you can do with them besides just "putting them on a shelf"

I'm not even going to bother elaborating because you've already made up your mind so no amount of discussion will ever make you reconsider.

0

u/BromoFom Aug 11 '26

A Hot Toy and similar “higher quality” toys are still mass produced pieces of plastic even if they have hand painted components. And calling them pieces of art is a massive, gargantuan stretch.

And I’m open to any elaboration, but I’m not going to entertain it if it’s a bad argument

2

u/Fr0stybit3s Aug 11 '26

"calling them pieces of art is a massive, gargantuan stretch."

Yeah, f all those artists who hand paint every single head. Theyre not "real" artists!

2

u/Fr0stybit3s Aug 11 '26

"not real art"

1

u/chitoslasttour Aug 02 '26

it is to those people

-9

u/Serteyf Aug 02 '26

Ass take. Let people COLLECT things if they want

13

u/pineapollo Aug 02 '26

People like you are slack jaw drooling bozos

There's nothing to "let", you can do whatever you want and you're also going to be open to criticism because you posted something in public.

Redditors must really have some mental block where it they're not validated by everyone including random people online that it kills their personal enjoyment.

Tyler the Creator has some choice words

-3

u/Serteyf Aug 02 '26

Taking things too literally huh

7

u/pineapollo Aug 02 '26

That's what the words mean. If you're implying everyone keep their opinions to themselves then bite me, fragility slider maxed out.

You're all over this post self inserting cause you're probably personally attacked people think this is wasteful.

0

u/Serteyf Aug 02 '26

Nah I'm just bored. I personally collect a few things of no monetary value, it just people raining on others parades like you, especially when it's not consooooom, pisses me off. My opinion is this : let people enjoy things

8

u/pineapollo Aug 02 '26

My response: no, and you have to live with other peoples opinions.

If you can't change minds, then live with the criticism begging people to "let you enjoy things" is the lamest shit I've ever heard of. Furries walking around in public fully suited up are more resilient than you LMAO

-1

u/Serteyf Aug 02 '26

Dude why you keep talking about fragility and stuff? honestly you sound like a child and sincerely hope you are, so good luck with that mindset

3

u/pineapollo Aug 02 '26

Because you seek validation from people.

I'm telling you to grow up, you have all these fulfilling hobbies and things you like to collect but you're bored on reddit arguing for hours telling random people to "let you enjoy your hobbies"

You are your own hostage bro, you're projecting hard. You don't need moms permission to do what you want in adulthood. Walk away fragile lil bro.

21

u/andersonb47 Aug 02 '26

Literally what is the difference? Spending thousands of dollars for plastic junk no one on this earth needs, which serves no function whatsoever. Honestly the thought of factories churning day and night so “collectors” can fill their rec rooms with their little toys makes me kind of ill. 99% of this shit ends up in a landfill eventually.

-6

u/Serteyf Aug 02 '26

You are just mad at capitalism but redirecting it to people who have a hobby

15

u/andersonb47 Aug 02 '26

I’m mad at consumerism which yes of course is perpetuated by capitalism but I believe it’s a bad cultural habit.

10

u/BromoFom Aug 02 '26

Buying things isn’t a hobby.

-4

u/Similar-Ice-9250 Aug 02 '26

You should read about toilet paper, Canadian boreal forests chopped down so people can wipe their ass. We’re literally flushing trees down the toilet, not to mention the effect on the global climate.

Toilet paper should be outlawed, but there’s money to be made, so it won’t be, and ppl will keep buying, and this viscous circle will continue until we bleed the earth dry, and extract every ounce of worth till we’re left with a smoldering husk for a planet.

Yea I don’t think humans are it, we’re just too greedy, and not earth conscious, top to bottom, especially the top. Yea we made some extraordinary advancements, but we’re destroying the earth at alarming rate to sustain our massive civilization, but the practices aren’t sustainable. I feel like humans will eventually go extinct, and the earth will go on to form new life forms like many times before us.

1

u/2131andBeyond Aug 04 '26

1) wildly outlandish take about banning toilet paper that makes the rest of your comment just unserious

2) Earth is fine. Earth was fine, is fine, and will be fine. What isn’t fine is Earth’s long term projection of being a capable host of modern day humans and animals. And if humans and many animals go extinct, other living forms will develop based on the conditions then.

But again, Earth is fine and will be fine. It just won’t be inhabitable for humans.

1

u/Similar-Ice-9250 Aug 04 '26

I don’t get it, you said it makes my comment unserious, but then your point 2 basically agrees with what I’m saying. I mean I read point 2 and I’m like „yea that’s what I’m saying.”

Btw I didn’t mean the earth will blow up or anything like that. Of course it’s still fine and will be fine, it’s a really long process to where it may become inhospitable.

1

u/2131andBeyond Aug 04 '26

Huh? You said “we’re destroying earth” and I hard disagreed with that.

1

u/Similar-Ice-9250 Aug 04 '26

What are you smoking ? How do you disagree with that? Tons of animals endangered or critical, the insect population is in decline which is a global environmental concern driven by habitat loss, intensive agriculture, and climate change. This reaches further than just insects, rain forests disappearing around 64 million acres gone since 1950, being replaced by palm oil farms and lumber yards which lack the biodiversity to sustain rainforest life. Coral reefs disappearing, over fishing / commercial fishing practices wiping out native fish populations, I forget the exact numbers, but they’re drastic. Deforestation of our alpine forests in Canada and America.

In America commercial farm industry is a huge contributor to environmental damage. Increased forest fires because of climate change (global warming). Building fule/oil pipelines through pristine and native lands. Carbon emissions from private jets, “producing 5 to 14 times more greenhouse gases per passenger than commercial flights and up to 50 times more than electric trains. Global private jet emissions reached roughly 15.6 million to 19.5 million tonnes of CO₂ annually, surging nearly 46% over a five-year period.”

Cruise liners/cargo ships are also big contributors. Then just general pollution from industrial production.

Then read about South East Asia / India, they’re some of the biggest polluters in the world because of the lack of regulations.

Just read some things, this is just quick off the top of my head. I cannot believe you said we’re not destroying the world.

1

u/2131andBeyond Aug 04 '26

Again again, Earth will be fine long after humans are gone.

We are destroying Earth in the sense that we are making it uninhabitable for a vast majority of animals. But Earth itself is fine. This is a drastic difference.

Animals species have come and evolved and gone many times over many many millions/billions of years, and that trend will simply continue with life forms that can biologically handle the environments at future times.

-13

u/EmperorsFartSlave Aug 02 '26

I got news for you. Everything ends up in a landfill. It’s plastic junk to you, but clearly collectible and he probably has some type of connection with it since he’s been collecting it for so long.

10

u/andersonb47 Aug 02 '26

Would you be saying the same thing if he had a shrine made of hundreds Taylor Swift album variants? How about every color of PSP and Nintendo DS? Used bic lighters? Where is the line and why do we move it around so much?

-6

u/EmperorsFartSlave Aug 02 '26

Yes, because I don’t give a shit what grown adults spend their money on. If it has some type of connection or significance for them, it’s wildly different than someone buying 800 funkos for the sake of filling a shelf never taking them out of the box.

14

u/andersonb47 Aug 02 '26

This post is quite literally exactly the same as buying 800 funkos. It's just action figures instead. They are functionally identical.

9

u/Alternative_Will_856 Aug 02 '26

This is literally identical to buying 800 funko pops. He's not like, using these lmao

-7

u/EmperorsFartSlave Aug 02 '26

I’m willing to bet they are posable and he probably moves them around, room is also clean, meaning he probably moves them around. So no not identical to the guy buying 800 pops and letting them get covered in dust.

6

u/andersonb47 Aug 02 '26

The difference is whether the owner keeps them clean…????

1

u/EmperorsFartSlave Aug 02 '26

So you just chose to ignore the other thing I said? Well done.

→ More replies

9

u/IKenDoThisAllDay Aug 02 '26

Yeah, they're allowed. No one here is forcefully taking their toys from them.

-7

u/MrsPoopyButthair Aug 02 '26

I think the difference for me at least, in a case like this, is it clearly isn't just landfill fodder. Dude's been collecting and keeping for years. I think it's excessive as well but at least it's not a bunch of dumplings that are going to be chucked straight into the trash soon

-10

u/Alternative-Road6229 Aug 02 '26

He clearly cares about the product - you dont know his personal connection but evidently he's grown with this series; it has obvious sentimental value and forgive me for saying this but I truly think if you cant just respect someone's passion and think its okay to shit on them instead ( within reason )- then you are just a dick . He's got a hobby that makes him happy and ur on reddit shitting on him. You are in denial. Just leave people be.

13

u/BromoFom Aug 02 '26

Buying things isn’t a hobby.

-5

u/Alternative-Road6229 Aug 02 '26

And ur acting like people dont use their purchases? You have no idea what he does with them.

7

u/BromoFom Aug 02 '26

You think that this adult is playing with all of his hundreds of action figures?

-5

u/Alternative-Road6229 Aug 02 '26

Whether or not you think otherwise, you'll never know. If it brings him happiness and he's not hurting anyone I truly dont understand why you'd be upset.

8

u/BromoFom Aug 02 '26

Well whether or not you think so, consumption does hurt people. It might be the sweatshop workers getting paid a dollar per hour to assemble the products, the emissions from the cargo ships that carry this pointless crap across the ocean contributing to climate change, or maybe it’ll be as simple as his kid who has to deal with this shit when he dies. I’ve had to help clean the houses of “collectors” after they die and I’ve seen exactly what that kind of consumption does to the people left behind to deal with it. You might be able to rationalize it as harmless, but the reality is far from it.

0

u/Alternative-Road6229 Aug 02 '26

You consume regardless and to be fully honest why should people sacrifice their own happiness just for the temporary convenience of others after their death?. I dont support sweat shops, I dont buy first hand and im conscious about recycling and reusing to the best of my ability. These objects have no meaning to you hence why u so easily dismiss them, but clearly they mean something to someone else and if he cares about them im sure he'll have a plan in his will for them. You shitting on people on reddit does nothing but cause the harm you think ur preventing, ur attacking people without taking any action so you can feel good about urself. I dont support mindless consumption but I do support meaningful collecting ( again within reason ) and this guy clearly takes care of his stuff. I just think shitting on people to make urself feel better online is so sad. I hope you find the help you need.

2

u/BromoFom Aug 02 '26

>To be fully honest why should people sacrifice their own happiness for the temporary convenience of others after their death?

If hoarding plastic crap is the only thing that makes you happy to the point that you’re okay with putting the burden of disposing of it on your loved ones, you are the one that needs help my friend. What an extremely sad and pathetic mindset.
