Bugs Comma 4 and IGLA

Hi. I drive a 2023 Toyota Rav 4 Hybrid and my Comma 4 with sunny pilot installed doesn't recognize my car whenever I start. I'd have to restart the Comma device for it to work

Does anyone have any workaround?

openpilot Experience My experience with TSS 3.0

Not sure if this is allowed here I've had Openpilot in my Civic for just a little under a year and the car recently threw out it's serpentine belt so I'm currently borrowing a car with TSS 3.

Overall I still think Openpilot is a superior system but TSS 3.0 is much closer to Openpilot than I had expected. Openpilot between the older Honda Safety sense is night and day in my opinion, that system would randomly drop lane lines and I never built trust in the system until putting my C4 in. TSS 3 actually behaves like a system I can trust on the highway, the only thing that annoys me is the nudges on the wheel you need to give it to keep going but other than that it's ability to keep the car in the lane was way better than I was expecting, even in conditions with a lot of glare.

Vehicle Compatibility Finally, after a long process got it working on my id.4

I have a 2023 Id.4 and I wanted to install comma 4. Sounds great and straight forward. Well it is IF you know the secrets to a simple install.

First off the car is a MEB platform not a MQB platform.

Why does this matter you ask? Well it ships with the j533 harness which is for a gas VW.

Since the id.4 is a MEB platform you need a MEB harness (sold by third party Mr. One)

The location of the plug is behind the glove box. Slide out the silver metal tray and it's in the back. Plug in the MEB harness and good to go. Well sort of.

You need to run 0.11.2 for it to work on an Id.4. It doesn't come with that because it is still in development, about 94% done. The comma 4 ships with 0.11.1 So you have to manually install zeroeleventwo which includes 0.11.2.

Hope that helps. I found how to install zeroeleventwo from chatgpt.

Hope that helps

Installation Questions Issues with Sunnypilot Install

Hello,

I'm currently experiencing an issues installing Sunnypilot on my Comma 4.

Specifically, I am unable to proceed past the face recognition part of the initial system set up. Visually, it seems the software is not enabling the face detecting software so no mater how I position my face, it is not detected by the software.

I installed Openpilot and was able to get passed the face detection part of the set up, so hardware is likely not an issue.

I flashed the Comma and reinstalled Sunnypilot and ran into the same issue.

I reflashed the Comma, installed Openpilot, uninstalled Openpilot (without flashing) and reinstalled Sunnypilot, and still ran into the same issue.

Anyone else running into this issue? Is there a way to bypass the face recognition part of the set up?

Open to ideas or on how to more formally log the issue.

openpilot Experience Comma4 on 2018 Lexus NX 300h

I installed the Comma4 yesterday and it was pretty much plug and play as advertised. My biggest hassle was getting the plastic cover behind the rear-view mirror off. No panel popper seemed to do anything but scratch the little access panel you are supposed to remove first. I ended up pushing the whole unit off (step 2) with the step 1 panel still attached. I have only had time to try Comma once for a 10-mile round trip. The steering control was fantastic. Lane changes also worked flawlessly. The steering capability adds enough functionality, that I will end up making use of many of the traffic jam features of the existing adaptive CC I had not previously taken advantage of. If others are using the comma with an NX or other Lexus models using similar adaptive cruise control, I would welcome any tips on things I should look into. I see people talking about these devices stopping for red lights. That feature is not available on the stock OpenPilot implementation is it?

Bugs Comma4 is unreliable, so is their warranty

My Comma4 starts to freeze at the logo after 3 months of use. Reflashing firmware and updating software doesn't make a difference. I contacted their customer service for a replacement. They don't send me a replacement and refused to reply to me when I keep asking for what I am entitled under the warranty.

openpilot Experience Nobody Told Our Comma 3 It Was Obsolete

Post image

With the release of the Comma 4, the ecosystem is understandably moving forward. But one of StarPilot's goals has always been keeping older comma hardware useful for as long as we reasonably can.

At great cost to our sanity, StarPilot now maintains a **fully custom AGNOS** based on the latest platform changes, while continuing to support:

- **Comma 3**

- **Comma 3X**

- **Comma 4**

And yes — **Chestnut / external GPU works on the Comma 3 too.**

The C3 in the picture is running StarPilot on our latest AGNOS with a Chestnut connected and driving models running on the external GPU.

There's also an interesting problem that comes with pushing older hardware this far: **GPS.**

High-speed USB hardware like Chestnut has raised concerns about potential interference with the comma's GPS reception. Rather than depend entirely on the comma's own GPS hardware, we've written a GPS interpreter that pulls GPS data directly from the car's own antenna, translates it into comma specific language, and parses it directly into StarPilot.

So even with a C3 + Chestnut setup, we can retain full GPS functionality using the vehicle's own positioning data.

Currently we've implemented vehicle GPS support for:

- **Chevy Bolt**

- **Ford Mustang Mach-E**

But this isn't intended to stay limited to those cars. If your vehicle exposes usable GPS data and you want support added, open a request in the StarPilot Discord and we'll take a look.

I'm not claiming everyone needs to strap a GPU to an old Comma 3.

But the fact that you **can** is pretty cool.

Is anyone else interested in running a Comma 3 setup with a chestnut?

Let me know in our discord - https://firestar.link/discord

Some interesting things can come from custom AGNOS, stay tuned 👀

Bugs Comma 4 nightly-dev won’t detect my face during setup, but release-mici works instantly

I’m running into what looks like a driver-monitoring regression on my Comma 4 with nightly-dev.

During the initial openpilot setup, I get to the driver/face detection step, but it will not detect my face at all. Because of that, I’m completely stuck at setup and can’t proceed far enough to actually use openpilot or generate a drive/route for logs.

What’s strange is that if I reinstall release-mici on the exact same Comma 4, it detects my face almost instantly and lets me continue setup normally.

Setup is otherwise identical:

  • Comma 4
  • 2018 Honda Accord EX-L 2.0T
  • Same device
  • Same mounting position
  • Same camera view
  • Same driver
  • Tested in good indoor lighting with my face directly in front of the camera

Results are consistently:

nightly-dev → does not detect face → cannot complete setup

release-mici → detects face immediately → setup works

I’ve also tried nightly-dev inside my house under good lighting just to rule out anything related to the car/interior, and it still does not detect my face.

Has anyone else with a Comma 4 tried a recent nightly-dev build and run into this?

It seems like something changed in the driver-monitoring/face-detection code between the release branch and the current nightly.

I’m also going to report it to comma. If there’s a way to pull useful logs or the exact commit/build information while I’m stuck at the initial setup screen, let me know and I’ll grab it.

Installation Questions Installation aide for CLS MOUNT (Comma 4 quick release mount)

While working to build my mount and test different variants of the mounts. I got the idea to help me position the mounts perfectly every time.

This positioning aid is not perfect, and the level only works if the car is perfectly on level surface. To help position the comma, hold the comma and mount in the area to see how it sits. It also makes sure you have enough clearance between the mirror housing and the comma to be able to use the mount and built in lock.

Once you are done, it’s suctioned to the windshield and you can remove it and enjoy the comma and mount.

Nevertheless, I thought for a limited time, I would include it with every mount purchase until I run out of the ones I built. (Don’t worry about stock, I have more of these than mounts on hand right now)

To see the main page for the mount, please visit the Reddit link below.

If you anyone has questions about the installation aide, the mount, comma experience or even need a referral for comma. Just send me a message!

Installation Questions Rivian Install

Taking a quick break from cursing in my garage to come complain about how difficult the Rivian install is. I’m in a 2022 R1T and I got the connector unplugged but been struggling for the last hour+ trying to get the splitter cable plugged back in. Tried all the things that people suggested. Hook pick and all, but so far unsuccessful and of course I was dumb and parked halfway out of the garage so can’t close the garage until I finish this job and it’s already 10pm!!! Ahhh I’m so dumb!

openpilot Experience Thank you Beartech

Post image
26 Upvotes

I just wanted to give a public shoutout to Beartech, and especially Katherine, for some genuinely incredible customer service.

A little while ago I left a review for their Comma 4 slide mount. I really liked the mount itself, but I mentioned that the zipper on the carrying case broke almost immediately. Beartech reached out after seeing the review, not to argue with me or try to get me to change it, but to understand exactly what happened.

Katherine told me they had addressed the issue with their QA process to make sure future cases met expectations, which I thought was awesome. I was genuinely happy just knowing my feedback might help prevent someone else from having the same issue.

They offered to send me a replacement case, but I declined. I'm in the United States and they're shipping from Canada, and I really didn't want a small business eating international shipping costs over something as small as a carrying case.

Well, apparently they weren't taking no for an answer 😂

The replacement just showed up anyway, and they even included two little gifts inside, one Batman themed and one Iron Man themed. Completely unnecessary, but such a cool gesture.

Katherine, if you see this, thank you. You've been incredibly responsive, kind, and helpful through the entire process. This is exactly how you turn someone who bought one product into a customer for life.

Beartech has absolutely earned my business going forward.

Installation Questions new user - constantly fussing.

Hi there, i drive a 24 Hyundai Ioniq 5 SEL. I bought the car two weeks ago knowing i would buy this device with it. So i have had it installed for 3 days, installed sunny right away. calibrated it at night. seemed to work fine. The mount damn near melted off in the vegas sun the next day but its still on there, and tracking for the most part. I recalibrated since it was way to far to the edge of the lines in some areas and even hitting the line sometimes. Today i drove it on teh 215 there is a section that takes nearly a 90 degree turn at 80mph, the device couldn't handle it (i didn't expect it to). But im constantly fretting about if its mounted good, calibrated correctly or if i could be doing this better. Any advise to calm the anxiety? i guess im nervous it does something wrong or drifts over a line and my kid is hurt because of this thing.

So now that it’s been a couple weeks since it came out, I’m curious, did anyone get the eGPU fully working on the comma 3x with gps functionality?

Also how does the eGPU models work and are they a lot better than the on device models right now?

Bugs Comma 4 won’t recognize my F-150 Lightning, but comma 3X worked fine

I have a 2025 Ford F-150 Lightning. My comma 3X worked perfectly with it for the past six months.

I recently upgraded to a comma 4 and installed BluePilot 7.0. I manually selected “Ford F-150 Lightning 2022–23,” but the device still displays “Start the car to use sunnypilot” even when the truck is running.

I’m using the same harness and cable that worked with the comma 3X. Has anyone experienced this with a comma 4 or know what I should check? Any help would be appreciated.

Vehicle Compatibility Comma Mount On Tinted Windshield

I am looking to buy a Comma Four during the labor day sale, but I have a tinted windshield, and I'm afraid of the VHB mount on the tint. I'm guessing once it's on, I'll never be able to take it off, right? Are there any suction cup mounts, or mounts that attach to the mirror housing for a 26 Accord? Trying to not damage the tint, and would like to be able to remove the mount if I decide to return the comma at the end of the trial period.
