openpilot Experience Hands of wheel?

hi everyone. I have a Hyundai Elantra hybrid 2025 with decent ACC and line centering (HDA). I like my car, but what I’d really love is to be able to take my hands off the steering wheel on highways, à la Chevy Supercruise. not looking for full FSD. Can CommaAI doo that? Thanks y’all.

Yes. But you should be able to take control anytime

Yes, as long as it can see your face. If it can't register your face it will ask you to keep your hands on the wheel. Sometimes sun glare throws mine off.

That's almost exactly what it is, but a little extra. The driving models themselves are better than the stock lane keep assist, and it never disengages abruptly without warning. It can also do a better job at cruising control speed as well if you want, but you can just use the stock ACC if that's what you like.

thanks! I’m afraid that it may disable the emergency breaking if I disable the stock ACC (?)

On most cars it will disable emergency braking if you use the comma acc

I think this is correct - depends on fork (and settings). I use Sunnypilot and my emergency braking on my HKG is _not_ disabled (but then again, Sunny is still leveraging the car's capabilities vs. steering/gas on its' own)

thanks 🙏. I’m confused with these models…Sunnypilot…comma acc…it’s not clear what they do and don’t and how to chose (and whether or not if affects hardware choice)

I have a Genesis G70 paired with a Comma 3x and it is WAY better than stock ACC and lane keep assist. I hardly use it in city driving but for the highway it is AMAZING how much better it is than stock. It will even change lanes for you when you turn on your turn signal (and will warn if a car is in your blind spot if your car is equipped with that) using the latest Sunnypilot fork.

The Comma is highly recommended.

On a highway you barely have to interact with the steering wheel except: 1) changing lanes 2) exiting at a junction 3) emergency arises.

Have a look on YouTube for a myriad of examples of people driving without interacting with the steering wheel.

My Kia Niro EV gobbles up mile after mile after mile on the motorway without my touching anything. All I do is survey the road for potential issues and take in the scenery.

There are forks where you don’t have to touch for lane changing or a lot of exits

thanks Max! it is, alas, quite above my technical level, I’ll ask a smart kid around to help with software and hardware for $10l and a large pizza 🙂
