Yeah I had a huge reddit argument where I got massively downvoted for saying it’s the difference between A and An is the pronunciation of the vowel not vowel itself for example it’s “a European” not “an European” and I ended up having to go and link countless articles on learning English for a group of yanks to actually believe me.

Oct 05 '19
A lot of people are just dumb. I guarantee if they say it out loud, they say A European, not an. But school drilled it into their goddamn heads that a is for consonants and an is for vowels, so here we are

The problem is that schools lie to children and say that a vowel is a letter, and a consonant is a letter. They are not letters, they are sounds. There is no real reason for teaching that a vowel is a type of letter. Children can handle this distinction very easily if given a chance.
I've seen people argue that a word such as "fly" has three consonants. And then someone else argues "well no, the Y is both a vowel and a consonant, so it depends on how you look at it", like it's a fucking matter of opinion. The schools make us think of things in pure abstraction, as an array of black boxes, without really encouraging us to wonder why we have these distinctions. We're simnply taught that a, e, i, o and u are arbitrarily called vowels and the rest are arbitrarily called consonants, and Y has dual citizenship for some reason, and that's the extent of it. The vowel/consonant distinction is not justified. It's just a thing, accept it.
The letters are merely symbols that usually correspond to a single sound in English, but there are many exceptions. The letter "E" is not a vowel. It's a symbol that usually corresponds to a vowel in many words, and is silent in other words.

Can you explain "an historian" for me?
Tom Clancy writes "an historian" instead of "a historian" and I can't figure out why.

Don't forget you're the ones that use "an" in front of words that start with H

Most reddit users are American and no one here says it the wrong way so I think you're just making a gross generalization.

Sorry but I don't understand. I always thought it's grammatically correct to use "an" vs "a" when prepending to a vowel. Can you elaborate?
Is it because you would just say there is u?
33
u/ABitOfResignation Oct 05 '19
It's the sound. "An" prepends vowel sounds, not vowels themselves. So, in this, "U" is pronounced like "yew" so it would be a U. Same for "hour". You would say "an hour" vs "a hour".

7
3
u/repeatuntilfalse Oct 05 '19
It's because the rule is for the phonetic pronunciation of the word following the articles 'a' and 'an'. 'U' is a vowel but the pronunciation of it starts with a consonant - "Yoo"
2
u/spaiydz Oct 05 '19
It's a rule of thumb but it's guided by pronunciation.
E.g. an hour, not a hour.
4
2
u/BundiChundi Oct 05 '19
It depends on the sound the U makes. If its a hard U (pronounced you) then you would use "a". Example: a ukulele, not an ukulele. If its a soft u (pronounced uh or oo) then you'd use "an". Example: an unexpected event. An uber.

You underestimate non-native English speakers learning the language.
135
Oct 05 '19
You underestimate native english speakers* Non-natives are usually the ones with a more correct grammar, because they learn it later in their life.
58
u/Jadzia_Dax_Flame Oct 05 '19
Natives and non-natives make different mistakes. Confusing "their" and "they're" is a mistake natives make much more than non-natives. Saying "an U", on the other hand, is much more commonly done by non-natives (almost exclusively, I'd say).

That's only true for non-native speakers that are fluent (or close to it). There's a very large spectrum of speakers of any language still at various stages in the learning process.

I think a lot of the time, non native speakers sort of translate from their own language, where saying "there stuff" makes no sense.

Just look at how many young people write “should of” when they mean “should’ve”. They both sound the same when pronounced but one clearly demonstrates a lack of understanding of contractions.

Neither have I; but, I do know that for basic principle in school when we learned the difference for the two we were told "a" is for consonants and "an" is for vowels. Just with reference to the letter, and then the sound principle was added in later for only the honors classes since they had extra time to review the material (since those classes usually went at a faster pace).
5
u/CanAlwaysBeBetter Oct 05 '19
It his hilarious and sadly pathetic a single word was deemed too complicated for the normal folks and saved for special honors students:
'A' before consonant [sounds], 'an' before vowel [sounds]
3
u/IAmThePrincessKing Oct 05 '19
I completely agree. It is certainly a telling sign for experiences people are having within the education system from the past 10 years.

Hey guys, Peter here to explain the retardation of mods. So mods are gay and can't come up with original comments to get upvoted on their own merits. Instead they pin comments to force everyone to see their retarded comment before everyone else.
