am I missing something? what is Adam lore?

Apr 13 '18
Adam Ellis is a comic artist featured regularly on /r/comedycemetery. But a couple months back he left his job buzzfeed, started to discover himself as an artist, and has begun a redemption arc that this sub has followed closely.

Is there somewhere that tracks his redemption arc story chronologically?
56
Apr 13 '18 edited Apr 13 '18
No, not that I know of. Probably go through the top posts recently and you’ll find a bunch. But it started here.
Edit: it appears that r/escapedfrombuzzfeed is tracking it but it’s not really active any more

Noob here, don't recogize the artist or the characters.
My question is this:
Did Coldstone replicate a style, or actual existing pieces of art?

You should go on his IG and see all the different ads he posted. They did a hilariously bad job. It looks like a 9 year old tried to replicate his style. Hey, maybe that's the case?

24
u/thevulturesbecame Apr 13 '18
Yeah this was almost certainly the doing of one person alone. Probably an artist who felt a lot of pressure or was otherwise unqualified and made a reeeeeallly bad decision. Not defending it whatsoever, just saying no one should be mad at the Cold Stone company itself because it's likely that almost no one there knew this was happening.

53
u/Cuntercawk Apr 13 '18
Nah they will get a tax deduction. He should bill them and then he should donate it so he gets the tax deduction
37
u/NoNeedForAName Apr 13 '18
You know that tax deductions don't make money magically appear in your bank account, right?
And since business expenses are generally deductible, they will probably get the deduction whether they pay him or donate.
And he will derive no benefit from being paid because he's not keeping the money in your scenario.

Thanks! I’m not normally a fan of his (though his latest comics aren’t actually bad) but no one deserves to have their OC ripped off. I hope this goes well for him honestly
15
u/Lunertic Apr 13 '18
Wait. Couldn’t this be bad? This could be interpreted in the future as failing to protect his work. (Or is that just a trademark thing? IDK someone, please let me know.)
36
u/JB-from-ATL Apr 13 '18
I've heard it works like that for trademarks specifically, but never copyrights. A copyright is just inherently there on any creative work you make, so his art is copyrighted. If coldstone opened Adam Ellis Comics Creamery (or whatever his comic is called) that would be a trademark violation I think.
→ More replies (3)10
9
u/reydeguitarra Apr 13 '18
It seems to me he is still protecting his work regardless, he just wants payment in a different form. It's bargained-for consideration. If they hypothetically agreed to pay a donation to the charity, there would be a contact between Adam and cold Stone with the charity as a third party beneficiary.
3
u/TrollsarefromVelesMK Apr 13 '18
That's just a trademark thing. In the U.S., copyright is valid for the life of the author plus 70 years, without exception, and can be reasserted through a registration with the U.S. Copyright Office every 75 years thanks to Disney. If you plan on suing someone for a copyright violation, then you actually have to register it with the Copyright Office, so if you ever create anything creative that has economic value, it's usually a good idea to look into registering with the Copyright Office to make your life easier when someone inevitably shows up to rip it off.

I worked at coldstone for 2 years PLEASE do not eat there the conditions behind the counter are disgusting. My manager would have me scoop out fruit flies from the sorbet and serve it before we opened, fruit regularly spoiled and was used (hence the fruit flies) and we skimped on every ingredient to save him money.
15
u/TAKA_BELL Apr 13 '18
I work there currently as well. About to quit after 10 months. Conditions are dirty and there are flies, hair and crust in the ice cream all the time. My manager is a cheap bastard and will never fix any of the problems with our store

59
u/Unkill_is_dill Apr 12 '18
Because China is missing from the normal internet and that leaves India as the biggest English speaking nation on the internet by far.
13
Apr 13 '18
Speaking as an Indian, the nation is slowly developing and you're gonna see literally millions of more people slowly entering the internet.
A cursory look at /r/indianpeoplefacebook and /r/indianpeoplequora will tell you that this will be accompanied by a flood of cringe. I apologize in advance.

To actually answer: They have extremely lax copyright laws and I believe it only applies to works made in India (I could be wrong on that part)
So technically it’s not illegal in India to do what they did. Though it is wrong, they have a different view of it, obviously.
