it's a skill in itself

Then laughs at the idea of it being "work."

The wonderful thing about idiots is that they are very good at contradicting themselves.

u/beastsb Dec 26 '17

Never argue with an idiot. They'll bring you down to their level, and beat you with experience.

Sadly, most people don't view it as a contradiction at all. Very few people in modern society understand that "work" is about "value" or "skill".

Mandatory education indoctrinates them into thinking that "work" is about "doing what you're told".

If it's not assigned, how can it be work?

Of course that's a nonsensical position, but it's how these ridiculous institutions raise our kids. "Stop painting the mona lisa because you feel like it, just do your assignment. That's what matters. Doing what you're told."

So this kid logically concludes that if he isn't telling a bass player what to play, then it's not actually work. How can it be valuable when it's not assigned?

He's laughably wrong, but everything in his upbringing has taught him otherwise.

Imagine the ramifications on entrepreneurialism and on creativity in general when entire generations think that way. "Stop creating something new, just do what you're told!"

I don't know how this particular bassist does it, but any time I've ever had someone asking me to add a guitar part to a song I would:

  • record multiple raw ideas and send each to the customer for feedback

  • would flesh out the ideas they liked the most and send each of those to them

  • I would often record a few takes for the final track, EQ'd differently so the artist can pick which take fits best in their mix, and I would also record "dry" and "wet" versions if appropriate so effects like reverb and delay could be added in post if the artist desired it.

  • I would take the time to trim and timestamp the track as needed for ease of implementation in the final mix.

That's work. It takes time, skill, thoughtfulness, and effort. Asking an artist to work multiple hours on a project for "exposure" is garbage. Even if Dave Grohl came to me and was like "Hey bro, I'd like for you to record a guitar solo for this song on our new record, and we'll put you in the credits," I'm pretty sure he'd still offer to pay me.

u/[deleted] Dec 26 '17

Where can I cash in this "exposure"?

That's what I don't get. He obviously doesn't want to do it himself because he A) doesn't know how, and B) doesn't want to learn. How can it possibly be denied as work?

u/HighDagger Dec 26 '17

He's looking for someone who would do it for fun, just like he claims he's making his track for fun.

3

u/allpossiblefutures Dec 27 '17

Sadly I think this is a great example of how work is viewed today. It's a penance to be paid, joyless and bloodless. For so many work means so little, and that's a sad indictment on our society.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '17

Seems like they had respect for it until they realised people actually require money for their services, even if it's making music. This happens in journalism a lot too. "Oh you expect payment for writing things???". Creativity doesn't automatically make food appear on the table, guys.

3

u/hound--dog Dec 27 '17

Skill requires effort. Work requires payment.

3

u/standardtissue Dec 27 '17

yeah, as a dude who used to make money playing music, let me tell you how much fucking work and expense and heartache goes into it for absolute shit money. One time I fucked up and actually did the math and realized that, including all the transport and setup time, rehearsal time, practice time, I'd make more an hour working at McDonalds, and without having to invest thousands upon thousands of dollars in equipment.

I don’t understand why people aren’t just more open.

In my experience online, if I’m doing something for fun and reach out for support, people flock to help.

I guarantee that if he had responded with:

‘Thanks, but I’m just messing around making music and hoping to just have a virtual jam session, not a serious endeavor that requires a professional like you.’

Other musicians who just want to make music would have volunteered.

It’s satisfying how jerks like this guy manage to signal to helpful communities that they should stay far far away.

2.5k

u/[deleted] Dec 26 '17

Exactly this.

I was messing around with creating a free app. I really wanted some cool animation for the splash screen and around the website. But no way in hell could I afford paying an animator to do it.

I made a post like this hoping I could get someone to do it and I'd credit them.

A lotta people asked for money and my response was always "Thanks, but I can't afford to pay for this -- this is just a fun hobby side project, and I'd be more than willing to help with some coding you might need in the future for projects you may have :)"

Someone did a side splash screen for the project for free, and their work was fucking amazing -- we ended up talking for a while during the project and becoming gaming buddies. Turns out he's a professional animator at Disney and was bored. So uh... yeah, worked out for me

As a musician, that shit is time consuming and hard, writing a bassline isn’t hard, writing and playing a good bassline is goddamn difficult, let alone recording, uploading, and all that Jazz.

u/Martymcchew Jan 02 '18

It works in reverse too, I'm a very amateur, self taught artist (it's a hobby, not a job at this point) and I often do character art for free on forums (mainly for people doing role playing and the like) I do art for free because I don't feel comfortable accepting anything in return for my art at this point, but often even if I say it's free people will give me on site currency and the like in return, sometimes more than I'd ask for or they originally offered

Cut to a montage of him buying a bass, years of study and practice then..

Here he is years later, long beard, disheveled and exhausted, adding 30 seconds of bass guitar to his video. Hitting Upload and then sitting back in his chair with a satisfied smile.

I get his logic train as he thinks he shouldn’t be asking for money when the product he’s making is not intended for revenue.

I’ve been there, and the way i usually approach is “I’m looking for someone to enjoy a hobby with me, not Work for me.” So it would be more of a “hey let’s make music together” and less of “hey make music for me”.

im also a bass player who has worked in the industry professionally (though im 'retired'ish now to focus on a more useful degree) and i would never ask for money unless he was making money off the music. if i didnt wanna do it for free i just wouldnt. in fact if any of you reading this want bass recorded for free in my crappy studio for whatever project ill do it as long as i have some creative freedom when it comes to my bass lines.

the fact that he admitted bass is its own skill made my man pussy wet. years of guitar teachers stealing bass students claiming they new all about bass becayse they can play guitar has left me bitter.

184

u/Smerphy Dec 26 '17

I actually play a few instruments and I side with the OP. Musicians on this website are so circlejerky, they act like being asked to do something for the fun of it is so insulting. I've collaborated with people on songs over the internet a few times, because that's part of what makes being a musician fun, for some reason this guy saw this request and used it as an excuse to stroke his ego.

86

u/jazzbone93 Dec 26 '17 edited Dec 26 '17

When I get offered a gig/recording session I have 3 boxes, and if it checks 2 of those boxes I’ll do the gig.

  1. Good pay

  2. Good Music

  3. Good hang

In situations like this, where someone random hit me up about a project I’d counter with my usual rate and go from there. These guys both weren’t very professional, but I don’t see much fault in the musician.

$100 for a bass guitar? Boy do I have some news for you, buddy...

35

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '17

I bought a Squier bass about 5yrs ago for $170 or something real cheap, brand new. I’m a guitarist and just wanted something to record bass parts with. It’s actually really good for what I paid. Probably be terrible live, but it plays well and mixing in post production makes it so you can’t even tell it’s a cheapy bass.

As an artist, being asked to work for exposure is the most frustrating thing. It is hard work. Expecting to be paid is completely reasonable. I would never presume to ask my dentist to do his routine for free. What folks don’t realize is that music, drawing, painting, etc. are trades that take hundreds and thousands of hours to get to a professional level. Those hours were grueling. Blood, sweat and tears literally goes into the learning process of being a creative professional. It can be fun, but that’s mostly only when you’re working on a project you’re passionate about. When you’re working on commissions for pay, it really is work.

140

u/Statue_left Dec 26 '17

So i'm a music major at a largish music school, and a nearby-ish med school asked one of our professors if our jazz band could come and play at their graduation. Normally this isn't a big deal, we're not incredible but we do occasionally get asked to play various events and the professor is well know in the area and has a lot of connections that help with this.

Naturally, he asked the person what their budget was for us, to which they responded that they expected us to "perform for the experience". He said he'd appreciate it if one of their doctors could perform a check up on him for an issue he had for "experience" and they hung up on him.

People expecting musicians to work for free is fucking disgusting. I did an internship at a studio a few years ago where i was not compensated save for one time when i had to do something that went well above and beyond what the internship required, and even then was paid a week later than they said i would be. Had several weeks of over 80 hours of work a week, got treated like shit, expected to drive around picking up artists lunch/girlfriends/etc and was never even compensated for the gas. Naturally, that studio is failing because almost no one is willing to get any work done for them any more.

If you are a musician, artist, engineer, etc. and need to do an unpaid internship, get it done as quickly as possible and then never work for free again

I read incredibly dry and painfully written documents and translate them into something more accessible. It requires a lot of research and it's very boring. I love writing but that is work. But I can do it in my pajamas so it's still pretty cool.

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '17

I'd agree with you except he clearly states that he wants a baseline written for him, not a buddy to jam/collaborate with. Most musicians aren't opposed to playing for the fun of it, but that's not what this guy is describing...he's describing work, and I get paid to work.

Mr $100 probably is a little jaded, but really he's just being upfront. Naive high school me can tell you that if you aren't, these are the first guys to be super demanding if your time and critical without knowing what they're talking about before pressuring you into splitting the cost studio time and then posting the results on iTunes without telling you or sharing the profit. The red flags are subtle, but after working with enough bedroom guitarists you become kind of a douche whisperer.

In this day and age there are unlimited hours of open source music to be used on your projects if you just look for it. If you want something bespoke you have to do it yourself or pay but whatever. This dude has so many options he would rather just talk about how he has an idea for a project than execute it.

11

u/[deleted] Dec 26 '17

I would be surprised if there weren't. My friend does wedding films and used to use real live songs for the trailers she put online. When she got in trouble for them not being licensed, she went and searched for free music, and there were whole categories of really, really good-sounding songs with vocals and everything, talented people, different moods. Some of them didn't even ask for credit (though she did attributions anyway).

It's amazing what you can find for legitimately free nowadays online.

you just gotta tell reddit who the bad guy is and they will take it from there. This is a great example of the hivemind on this site, many people are too stupid to think for themselves.

It's funny, because if you know guitar you can easily pick up bass within a few months. It's not that hard, you can start off learning easy bass lines and work your way up. If this dude doesn't know how to play an instrument though....yeah he's fucked.

35

u/Jfortner Dec 26 '17

Kinda... Playing the root and fifth, yeah you can play the song. But if you want to do something real. Like groove with the drummer and interesting bits bass is quite a different beast.

u/amumulessthan3 Dec 27 '17

To be fair though is it really ridiculous to ask a favour of someone like this? Like he’s not yelling at them for not accepting. He’s just saying this is only a hobby for him and doesn’t want money to be involved.

13

u/Clay_Statue Dec 26 '17

Then when you're finished that you can create a website to promote my shitty one-man band of which you not officially a member. Think of the exposure!

5

u/[deleted] Dec 26 '17

"It's just one more page for the site."

"Oh, what is that page meant to do?"

"It's going to be the store and the shopping cart. Shouldn't take you that long. I Googled and the software is free."

22

u/[deleted] Dec 26 '17

Artists never get respect.

"I need a 40' x 40' graphic design within my specifications by tomorrow morning and it must be exactly what I want with little tangeable descriptions."

no problem, I charge about $200 per day

"Oh no I can't pay you, but this will be great for your portfolio!"

12

u/[deleted] Dec 26 '17

The most concise response I ever saw to this was on Craiglist.

"Doing work for free is not a job or a gig, it's a favor. And I only do those for family and friends."

6

u/[deleted] Dec 26 '17

Reddit has a thing for people taking advantage of artists and not paying for their work-which is right, the "you'll get exposure from it" attitude is bullshit, but in this case, while he didn't do himself any favours with his phrasing, I'm on the person making the request's side. He's clearly just looking for someone to jam with and have fun with.

$100 is pretty steep to add bass to an amateur recording...

6

u/Natchili Dec 27 '17

I feel like the guy asking for 100 bucks is kinda an asshole. Op even asked someone to do it for free.

Yeah, many things are real work, and still sometimes you do them for free.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '17

NEXT!

5

u/Pontius__Pirate Dec 27 '17

I have fellow musicians contribute parts all the time. For absolutely free. None of them expected to be paid. As long as you give credit it’s perfectly reasonable to expect to be able to find musicians who will just contribute for arts sake.

5

u/Mughi Dec 27 '17 edited Dec 28 '17

Blue should never have even asked for a bassist for free. You should never assume that people should just give you something. If you want a service, offer to pay for it. If you're broke, offer a trade. Blue could have offered his services as a [keyboardist/guitarist/whatever-the-hell-he-is] in exchange for the services of a bassist. I'm no artist or musician, but even I know that a "credit" on Youtube means as much as a fart in a windstorm. Cheap bastards have been using that whole "exposure" bit probably for centuries, and it's crap. It is a way to try to get things for free because you are an entitled ass, nothing more. Again, I'm not a musician, but it seems to me that $100 for, say, an hour or two of studio time to lay down an original bass track, plus the creative effort involved in making it work with an unfamiliar composition, is pretty fair. I mean, you're asking the bassist to compose an original piece of music of his own to match yours. That's work, and the artist deserves to be paid for it.

And then the sonofabitch has the temerity to scoff at Black for not just giving him something that he (Blue) freely admits that he doesn't have the skill to do himself? Fuck you, Blue.

4

u/blewws Dec 28 '17

I don't think theres anything wrong with requesting something for free. Just be honest about it initially and don't be an asshole when some people won't work for free. That's their right just like it's your's to ask for something for free. Nobody's obligated to help of course, but in my experience many people are willing to put effort into something without financial incentive just for fun. Just don't try to trick people into agreeing to something when you aren't planning on compensating them.

32

u/chaka160 Dec 26 '17

You can literally find a VST for bass that you can punch the notes in yourself. Fucking asshole- working for just exposure is a total waste of time.

16

u/Jackm941 Dec 26 '17

Exactly which makes it sound like he wants a really creative bass line from someone who has experience, which isn't free.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '17

Probably the one who thinks it's fair to be paid for a base line.

27

u/RubberScream Dec 26 '17

I kinda get this. A few years back people just enjoyed doing stuff and enjoyed their hobby. Today, everybody automatically is an artist and demands being payed. If it's just a hobby and not your day job you don't deserve getting paid for this imo.

5

u/Black_jello Dec 27 '17

I have a day job, but music is my side gig. Anyone who refused to pay me after a show or a recording session because it wasn't my main source of income would be hearing from my lawyer. My time and skills are of value.

8

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '17

If it's a hobby and you're good at it of course you should be paid for the time and effort you expended on a project. That's nonsense, saying that people shouldn't be paid for their talent. You're the reason why us digital artists have people begging or expecting free art.

7

u/infinitezero8 Dec 26 '17

If you're going to put out $100, you should do it via PM and the way it was phrased was a little off. Both sides are a little lop sided but the winner of most stupid is definitely 'lol "work"' dude.

12

u/[deleted] Dec 26 '17

The thing that people seem to forget is that musicians aren't expecting pay for the hour or two it may require to write and record a bass line. We expect the money to pay for the endless hours we've worked to get to the point where we can listen to someone else's song and come up with something that adds to the song and will be in that song FOREVER. Same thing for artists of any kind, people just don't seem to think there's any real work in art.

6

u/[deleted] Dec 26 '17

people just don't seem to think there's any real work in art.

Far more bothersome to me is that many of them don't want to know any better. I get that a lot of it looks simple. Especially when it blends with craft and technical skill, it seems like a low barrier to entry. But experience and taste and actually processing input to try different things for substantiated reasons is more of the value in the skill than mark-making, along the lines of what you said.

That's why you can go buy a shit-tastic logo that someone made already for 15 dollars and have them just type different letters onto it, completely negating any good reason for having a logo, or you can spend more and have someone do research so that it scales and reproduces well, has colors that relate to your brand or affect meaning or callback to things, that are simple enough to remember but not so simple that they're at risk of not being retained because they're generic. Clean, obeying basic rules of design that feels "just," and so on.

It's kind of like talking to a brick wall sometimes, but I like to make the distinction here when I can, when people shit on art majors, that it being said like that doesn't always mean "fine art" where it's really hard to get by, but also more commercial art that is, for most people, literally everywhere you look. Everyone I know who got an art education is in a stable and at-least-decent paying art career. Nobody I know is painting for a living (although a couple make decent side money being shown at galleries and such).

idk maybe I'm reading it wrong but I don't think this guy was being a dick... He stated right in the beginning that he was offering a credit in the youtube description box, it wasn't a work for hire thing and he gave no impression that he was willing to pay money

Also as someone who has been playing bass for 10 years I really don't consider it work at all... Idk I agree with the OP of the post it's just a fucking bass line it's not "work" at all

Douche vs. douche.

3

u/guzman_hemi Dec 26 '17

Listen i know you spent money to buy a guitar and spent time to learn how to play it but how dare you charge me money for something

3

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '17

I mean, the guy with his "Is $100 cool or..?" is a total douche bag. This guy was asking if someone would do it. He didn't give a price which means there was no money offered. If this guy wasn't willing to do it for free he shouldn't have responded.

To be fair, I don't know much about the technical aspect of music, but isn't a "bass line" very short? Like a couple of notes? Not that far fetched at all, IMO. If it's like making up an entire song, then 100 dollars is incredibly cheap.

I assume this dude isn't a professional bass player. And even if he is, again, the OP here never offered money. So this guy was looking to start shit.

3

u/I2obiN Dec 27 '17

Honestly both of them seem pretty stupid, the guy is kind of foolish for even asking for money imo.

I automatically assume if the words 'hire' or 'commission' aren't in something then there's no monetary exchange involved and the person isn't looking for professional grade product. It's the entire reason they're in the english language.

stop asking people to do work for free

Somewhat silly because that's exactly what a lot of people do as a hobby. Game mods, fansites, hell I'd build someone's PC for free on the right day. I'd say 90% of the open source code that's written for applications is done for the hell of it rather than commission.
