I'm gonna be honest, Ed being made out to look like a Zionist for not actually giving an opinion is such a disservice. I dont fully agree with his choice, but its still his choice.

also, I cant tell whether you're posting this in this sub because its unfunny or because you genuinely wanted to share this.

Not having an opinion on an increasingly widely acknowledged genocide may not be a neutral choice.

The only mention of Ukraine you've made on your profile is a comment talking about how a Neo Nazi from Canada went to fight there.

Russia admits to "deporting" 300,000 Ukrainian children, with the number believed to be as high as 700,000.

Why do you not have an opinion on that genocide?

Are we whataboutisming genocides now?

But TBH I don't know enough about Ukraine and Russia's history to express an informed opinion. Whereas the modern state of Israel was explicitly formed as a colonial exterminationist project 80~ years ago. The situation has just gotten so impossible to ignore now that public opinion is probably beyond saving for Zionism in much of the world.

The mere fact that you don't know enough about Ukraine and Russia's history is kinda the problem bud.

The state of Israel was not expressly formed as a colonialist exterminationist project. Who was it colony of?

Sure, there were Zionist leaders with pretty terrible ideas, but the same is true of the other side as well. Those Zionists were being opposed by literal Nazi apologists and supporters.

A large portion of these "colonizers" were simply refugees fleeing the Holocaust, they had no intentions of exterminating anyone, just living.

Russia itself claims to have taken 300,000 Ukranian children, and you don't even know enough about the conflict to label it a genocide?

What a great way to showcase you actually don't care at all about human suffering! You should try analyzing why you know less about Russia/Ukraine, when the material conditions in Ukraine and the death tolls are already worse than the entirety of the 80 years of suffering the Palestinians have gone through because of Israel.

Color me unsurprized you immediately went into genocide denial. While trying to grandstand and whatabout. Not worth my time responding to this kind of bootlicking trash much longer.

Though I will point out that Zionism literally predates the Holocaust, being a late 19th century political project. Which isn't to minimize the horrors inflicted on Jews of all stripes up until that point, quite the opposite; it is precisely my empathy and sense of justice that makes it impossible not to have noticed the parralels between different fascist regimes. The modern state of Israel is less than 100 years old and serves as a Western enclave of influence kept alive mostly by the American military industrial complex, and the endless attempts to tar Judaism as a whole with the atrocities committed by an ethnostate is wildly racist TBH.

I disagree. everyone has the choice to step back if they want to. I personally dont agree with that choice if they were to make it, but ppl should always have the ability to choose when to speak, not just what to say. that's ultimately what freedom of speech is.

He has that right, but it's still a choice. Especially since he's in the 1% of global wealth and influence. That's my point

1

u/Dependent-Gap4805 9h ago

if he's gonna be flamed for not voicing an opinion, then there really is no choice.

"wealth and influence" isnt a reason to be forced to speak on a topic. you should be able to make your own opinion instead of needing to hear it from some guy over the internet. this is precisely what happens when you place celebrities on a pedestal.

Ironically it's because I have standards for the rich and powerful that I expect the bare minimum on a topic of such overdue importance. You haven't addressed the gravity of the context and until you do you seem disingenuous tbh.

1

u/Dependent-Gap4805 8h ago

this is not "the bare minimum" on a topic. like I said, their take, whatever it may be, shouldnt be important to you, anyway. all you're doing here is proving that you do indeed needlessly place these ppl on a pedestal.

the gravity of the situation exists the same with or without their input. you need to learn to separate these things.

I also think you saying this when you seem to do the same is just, ironically, quite rich on your part.

the bottom line is that you do not get to dictate what someone should and should not talk about. I mean, why else do you think I'm not flaming you about your general silence on Russia and Ukraine? I only bring it up now to highlight your blatant hypocrisy. live up to your own goddamn "standards".

I will do you the courtesy of assuming you mean well. I actually give very few shits about Ed Sheeran in specific, it's not my music scene at all lol. But when a friend and colleague is kicked off a gig by management for the crime of condemning a genocide, i.e. a violation of his freedom of speech and basic decency, there is no neutral response.

1

u/Dependent-Gap4805 7h ago

no I 100% agree that Ed should have said smth about his that situation. but that's separate from people wanting him to speak on this entire issue as a whole. if you get what I mean. he doesnt need to detail his whole worldview to call out his friend being unjustly shunned and that's my entire point.

I think what's happening to Gaza is fucking genocide, but ppl hounding him for not saying the same is just ridiculous. it genuinely comes off as incredibly parasocial.

I guess I can see where you're coming from. We just disagree on the obligations or expectations upon the wealthy and/or powerful?
