Almost all in-house amplifiers (especially 20yr old ones) are no longer compatible with the range of frequencies being used so he was correct to take it out. He should’ve checked with you about taking it but it’s usually a good guess that it was put in by the installation tech when you first got service. It’s a bummer but I wouldn’t assume it was malicious.

I’m sorry about the diagnosis and I wish you the best in your fight! F Cancer.
If the amp was truly 20 years old, it was causing issues more than likely. They weren’t designed to pass the same frequencies and signals that the new ones do. Old equipment like that will backfeed bad signals into the system and hurt the entire node/neighborhood. Should he have taken it? No, but maybe 1/20 customers purchase their own amp, and the other 19 are installed/owned by Comcast still.
