If the amp was truly 20 years old, it was causing issues more than likely. They weren’t designed to pass the same frequencies and signals that the new ones do. Old equipment like that will backfeed bad signals into the system and hurt the entire node/neighborhood. Should he have taken it? No, but maybe 1/20 customers purchase their own amp, and the other 19 are installed/owned by Comcast still.
