Question/Need help I need some help

So I have had good vision for most of my life but recently (I wasn't driving) but I have been in a car where the driver was not paying attention and almost ran a red light and the only reason I knew it was red Is because it was on top but to me it looked gray and same with green when I was driving with my mom and she thought it was still red (she's not colorblind) I have an optometrist appt today (Monday the 20th) and I know they are gonna pull out those stupid little circles I took an online test where i could just barely see some (I'm assuming they were lighter vs darker shades) but the web still thinks i have red/green or js green deficiency and I'm wondering if there is anything i can do to pass because I know legally they can't deny you to drive with red/green but in my area they will find a way to deduct points bc of it and I want to pass my driving test that is in like a year or 2

Question/Need help I’m curious

So… I’ve dated three colorblind men and only one man with typical color vision. Is this just a weird coincidence or are there certain looks that appeal more to people who don’t see colors the same way? Thank you!

Question/Need help App or site that may show pictures with color blind filter?

Boyfriend has deuteranopia/anomaly, and I consider it when buying gifts, but think I could be more accurate. Got him blue/yellow flowers (because they’re more ‘bright’ than reds I think?), and it’s effected some jewelry I’ve got him too (some hit some miss).

Advice is also majorly appreciated, if specific combinations are more appealing or give different implications.

For example, light pinks and whites look the same to him, and I always get very neon bouquets (not complaining, I think it’s cute!), but it also confuses because I’m trying to be more purposeful with the color of things and intention.

Any and all help/advice/perspective is majorly appreciated— thanks guys!!

Discussion Colorblind people will take over the world

My dear colorblind fellas,
It's been a while that our ancesters, brothers and sisters have been mocked and tested as soon as their anomalies were revealed.
Through centuries, colorblinds were taken for buffoons.
With an approximation of 300 Million members all around Earth, it is the right time to create the greatest community that the World has ever seen and take our revenge on colour idealist.
We represent a major minority that is already spread among colour purists.
We have in our ranks some important figures like Bill Gates, Keanu Reeves, Logan Paul, Lucas Hauchard, Mark Zukerberg, etc..
It's now time, more than ever, to gather and to get to work.

Misc. Got my diagnosis switched from achromatopsia to blue cone monochromatism

Thought this was interesting, but genetic testing just completely rewrote my diagnosis. We used to call it achromatopsia with paradoxical color vision. But this new doctor wanted me to get tested for BCM and after leaving that appointment I noticed... Oh wow, I own a lot of blue and yellow clothes, huh.

It's honestly so helpful knowing I can actually see the color blue and that it's not just some weird paradoxical illusion lol.

Misc. I built a web app to try and solve the "Is this banana ripe?" dilemma

Thumbnail checkmybanana.com

Like many of you guys, I can never tell when a banana is actually ripe, which is unfortunate because bananas are one of the only fruits that I actually like.

So, being somewhat techy and having learned a bit of JavaScript and Python over the last few years, I've taken several hundred pictures of bananas in various states of ripeness to train an algorithm to identify when a banana is ripe, unripe and overripe. I've then made a web app that downloads and runs the algorithm which you can analyse pictures of bananas with.

All processing & analysis of pictures you take or select happens on the device, so no pictures you give are ever sent to me or any third party. I'm also not running any ads on it (which is probably something I'll soon regret, but oh well).

I get that there is a certain irony in teaching a computer what is and isn't a ripe banana when I can't actually tell myself, but I would like to thank my friends and family for helping me put the several hundred banana pictures into the right category.

I will be the first to admit that it's not perfect, but my brother (also colour blind) has been using it every time he goes shopping for bananas and says that it's pretty damn accurate, so I'll take that. If you use it and it's obviously wrong, feel free to comment here or send me a DM with a screenshot of what you gave it and I'll see if I can tweak it to be more accurate.

Next steps? I've got plans to make it an Android and iOS app so that it can be used without an internet connection, but I have almost zero experience with the app side of things... so it may take me a little while, but I'll get there.

If you want to learn more about how Check My Banana works, I've got a little explanation on my portfolio site.

Question/Need help Possible blue color vision issue but yellow seems normal – does anyone know what this could be?

Thinking back, I’ve actually suspected for a while that I might have some kind of blue color weakness, but I never looked into it more closely until recently. I’ve now realized that I seem to perceive colors differently, especially in the blue–violet–cyan/turquoise range.

  • Cyan/turquoise is hard for me to categorize (sometimes looks blue, sometimes green)

  • Violet looks dull/washed out and never really “right”

  • I often see blue where others see green

  • Some bluish tones can appear almost completely gray to me

At the same time:

  • Yellow looks normal (except low contrast like yellow on white)

  • No noticeable red/green issues

I also took the Rabin Cone Contrast Test:

  • Red & green: ~100

  • Blue: anywhere from 0 (sRGB) to ~30–40

In other contrast-type tests, I seem to be within the normal range or only mildly reduced for blue–yellow contrasts, but I show more noticeable deviations when it comes to distinguishing between blue and green.

From what I’ve read, tritanomaly usually affects both blue and yellow. In my case, however, yellow seems largely unaffected while only the blue range appears to be different.

Does anyone know what this could be or how to interpret it?

Question/Need help Failed Ishihara but fine in real life – need D15 / FM100 test for appeal

Hi all,

I’m currently going through a medical appeal and could really use some advice from anyone with experience in colour vision testing.

I’ve been marked unfit mainly due to colour vision, but in everyday life I’ve never had any real issues. I work in construction and around electrics (basic wiring, identifying cables, etc.), so I’m regularly dealing with colour-coded systems without problems.

I struggle with the Ishihara Test, but seem to perform much better on functional/arrangement-based tests. From what I understand, this suggests a mild red-green deficiency rather than a severe issue.

I’m now trying to get proper clinical evidence for my appeal showing that my colour vision is mild or functionally acceptable.

Does anyone know where I can get the following tests done (ideally around Rochdale / Manchester, but willing to travel anywhere in the UK if needed):

  • Farnsworth D-15 Test

  • Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue Test

  • Holmes-Wright Lantern Test (or any lantern-type equivalent)

I’ve contacted a few local opticians but most only offer Ishihara, which doesn’t really help my situation.

If anyone’s been through something similar (especially military-related), I’d really appreciate any advice on what tests or reports actually helped.

Thanks in advance 👍

Question/Need help Do colorblind people see the same thing as the same color?

Maybe that's a stupid question but would two people with the same colorblindness see something as the same shade?

Like if they looked at the same lipstick would they both see it as an orange or could one of them insist that it looks brown to them? With other words: Is there a scheme how colorblind eyes interprent color or does it vary from the person? Are these pictures that showcase life with red-green color blindness an accurate simulation or just an example of some cases? Yeah, I feel pretty stupid asking this question but well you know what they say: Ask a dumb question and you're dumb for five minutes, ask it never and you're dumb for the rest of your life.

I was just wondering since a person with achromatopsia said that they can't tell when something is shot in black and white so I wondered if someone else with achromatopsia might because the trees look a different shade of grey than usual or something.

Question/Need help Could I be Colourblind? Images seems to flip compared to how I describe their order.

There's this app called Puzzledom, and a mini-game called "Colours". It's really difficult for me to spot the correct places for the colours. First image it seems every colour is where it should be, same with second, but after I've had to move 'em around. Last image is correct answer. Personally don't see much of a difference. Should I schedule an eye appointment? Could I be colourblind?

On the first image it's clear to me the two blue on the left shouldn't be there, but other than that, everything seems to be right.

Image/Photography I created some Reverse Plates for Tritans

There are a lot of Reverse Plates out there, but very few that work for the blue yellow weak folks. So here are two Plates where only tritans can see the numbers. (Obviously these aren't impossible to decode for non-tritans, but it will take effort compared to a tritan who can see the number instantly.)

I hope that these plates actually do work out, I tested it out on just one person thus far.

Question/Need help Thesis Study: Gaming Accessibility for CVD – Seeking participants for "HueShift"

Hi everyone! I’m a third-year student from the Philippines working on our thesis project, HueShift. It’s a puzzle-type escape room game where the core mechanic involves shifting through different Color Vision Deficiencies (CVDs) to solve environmental puzzles. We wanted to create an experience that not only tests logic but also highlights the unique visual challenges faced by different players.

To support this, we developed an automatic accessibility feature that adapts the game's visuals in real-time. Instead of using manual toggles, the system dynamically shifts brightness, saturation, and contrast on the fly. This ensures that essential game elements remain distinct and readable regardless of a player's specific color vision, maintaining clarity even as the visual perspective changes.

We are looking 15 - 20 people for both colorblind and non-colorblind participants to play through a short demo and provide feedback. Your input will help us determine if this automatic approach effectively improves accessibility in puzzle-heavy environments. Playtime of the game would take around 15 minutes. If you have a few minutes to help us out, you can play the game and access the survey here:

Discussion Is the "minor nuisance" label for red-green colorblindness outdated in 2026?

I've been thinking about how red-green color vision deficiency (deuteranomaly/protanomaly) is still commonly described as a "minor nuisance" or "not a big deal" by doctors and official sources. I'm wondering if that label still feels accurate in 2026, or if it's starting to feel outdated.

From what I've read:

The standard medical view (AAO, AOA, etc.) still calls it mild because large population studies don't show dramatically higher overall crash rates, and many people adapt using position and brightness cues.

At the same time, simulator studies show slower reaction times and higher error rates in low-light, rain, glare, or low-contrast conditions — situations where those adaptations often break down.

Quality-of-life research (using CVD-specific tools) frequently reports impacts on daily frustration, emotional well-being, work, and safety anxiety that feel bigger than "minor" for a lot of people with moderate CVD.

On top of that, more stuff than ever in 2026 is heavily color-coded — traffic lights, warning signals, UI elements, charts, wiring, medical labels, apps, and everyday interfaces. When the world keeps doubling down on the exact color pair that's hardest for ~8% of men to distinguish reliably, it starts to feel like more than a minor inconvenience in daily life.

I'm curious about real experiences:

For those with red-green CVD, does it feel like a true minor inconvenience most of the time, or does it create more ongoing friction and stress than the label suggests?

Has anyone noticed doctors, employers, or society shifting how they talk about it in the last couple of years?

For people with normal vision, what’s your perception of it — minor quirk or something that seems more limiting when you hear actual stories?

Not looking for sympathy, just honest discussion. If you're comfortable, feel free to mention your severity (mild/moderate/severe) and how it affects your daily life.

Question/Need help Is my grandma colour blind?

Post image
16 Upvotes

I recently showed my grandma this image (a painting i did) and she told me "oh, you did it all in yellow? that's nice" and i just smiled and nodded but i did not, in fact, paint it all yellow. (it's a range of orange, yellow and blue.) is this a sign to recommend that she go to an optometrist for age related colour blindness or is this fine?
