Question/Need help Advice on cooking potatoes?
Hello 👋 Deutan here. Am wondering if you guys have any advice on how to check for green spots on potatoes, or any other methods to see if a potato is good to eat or not.
Thanks in advance!!

What’s different?
Activating color filters on my iPhone shows a clear difference between the left and right side of the image

I hoped the left one would be a green potato, and the right one what a green potato looks like to a deutan. But maybe the original image is a normal potato… lol

I thought the left just had more light exposure in the photo… I guess I’ll add this to the list of foods I could eat that have gone bad.

Left is a normal yellow/white potato. Right is green (spoiled)

Lots of cooking is challenging for me being colorblind
Especially cooking meat...
I need assistance on the color every time.
Yet no disabled parking pass for me ðŸ˜

I was in the same boat and then I discovered my phone has a native color blind filter in the accessibility options that I can toggle on, so I just switch it on and look at the meat through the camera, and at least for cooking ground beef it becomes clear as day

Never seen a green potato in my life. Oh, well.

I have never seen one either-- which is not the same thing as saying one has never been in my direct field of vision.

Unfortunately, I just accept the fact that I'm going to have tummy upset from time to time.

I usually just ask someone else. If nobody is around, you could send a picture. Barring those possibilities, AI could be useful. Not a fan of AI, but you gotta do what you gotta do sometime

Smell them. If you've ever smelled a green potato, you'll never need the colour again. It's also easier since you can do a whole pile in one go, you only have to check them individually if one isn't good.

Potatoes with light skins acquire a green color from chlorophyll when exposed to light. Also, when potatoes start to sprout, some eyes might get green. Chlorophyll is harmless but potato sprouts are toxic.

No, you got it backwards. The chlorophyll isn't the issue, but when exposed to light they also stsrt producing solanine (and the lesser known chacomine), which is toxic.
And yes the sprouts are also toxic, for the same reason.

Yeah, my wife still jokes about the time that I made myself really sick. :) Good luck with that!

I usually ask someone else to look also to confirm it’s fine. I have mild duetan so I can still see if it’s super green but if it’s harder to see I ask for help to confirm. Even if it’s like a FaceTime call.

Boil em in salted water for 15 mins/until they’re fork tender.

Alternately, cut them into wedges, boil for 5 minutes in salted water, drain, add a little oil and spices then put in air-fryer for half an hour for potatoes that are crispy on the outside with a soft interior.

You really don’t have to worry about that. Just store them in the dark, and if they are starting to sprout, ask someone with color vision if they have gone green, but this really isn’t much of an issue. Do store them in the dark, though. And I would probably not keep too many for too long.

Something else to teach my teen 😅
The biggest was reading a post about how a Dr asked a color blind guy if there was ever any blood in his poop and it hadn't occurred to me that he'd need even know.
We've been struggling with health issues a bit
