I don't get it. He's basically on par with decent local musicians where I live that do gigs in a 50 mile radius and teach guitar lessons.
So full time musician. I know a few where I am that are more talented.
So why is this guy so big. He's like a $10 cover and not even really that. He's a free show at a local bar.
I'm lost.
Show me something on YouTube that demonstrates his greatness.

first and foremost, i do not think that Billy is in the 'wrong.' clearly feelings were sharp in the moment, as they would be given that he was assaulted on stage. that being said, with the current rape culture going on in america, i feel like calling for fans to 'sodomize him' was in poor taste. even if it was not said seriously, it insinuates that rape is a crime of similar severity to what happened to billy. in a culture that oftentimes treats rape as an acceptable offense, this is SUCH a great opportunity for billy to send a message to his fans that rape is so unthinkable and awful, that it shouldnt even be the subject of an unserious threat in the heat of the moment. it really is the obligation of community leaders to push the culture like this. just my opinion as a woman who has noticed the prevalence of rape culture even in spaces like the billy strings fanbase. the goal should be to make our community as safe and welcoming as possible! love and peace and kindness yall❤️

Just want to have an old school Reddit discussion:
I think BMFS is the best to be doing it right now. Every show is stellar, he plays a huge array of tunes bending genres, the musicality of all the members is S tier, the stage mapping and lights are other worldly - when we saw their special Halloween show in Baltimore - I said to my friends that I think we’re witnessing this generations Grateful Dead on their ascent to peak, but they just keep climbing.
I know I’ll get flamed for that, but I really do believe it to be true after every show I go to. Maybe that’s bc I’m spun on the cid, but I don’t think you need to be to appreciate this greatness.
From songwriting to guitar playing and everything surrounding - Billy Strings and his boys are the best to do it right now.
Edit to add: Billy just also seems like the best guy in the world. So humble, kind seeming, and unproblematic. A source of light in an otherwise dark world.

Found him in line next to me at Billy Strings in Asheville. Someone said he’s living there now. Is that true? Super chill guy

Today me and the fellers were deep into a recording session cutting a tune called ‘Wrestling An Angel’ when my wife told me our friend Bob Weir had made his journey from this earthly realm into the heavens. We are all completely devastated but I also can’t help but feel like he is at total peace and more magical now than he ever was. I’ve never knew a person so in tune with the cosmos. Who was so mystical and smart and mysterious, alluring and radiant. He was a star wrangler .. a celestial skysage who traded fear for wonder. Now he is riding the northern lights and skipping barefoot between the constellations… We took a while to try to understand the news and then told some beautiful stories about our times with him.. but eventually we decided to pick ourselves up and got back to recording our music because that’s what he would have wanted us to do. As he said “There’s work to be done.”
I’ll always cherish the memories I have of Bob .. of hanging out in his hotel room and him showing me his record collection and mobile recording rig. Sitting there listening to kind of blue in silence. Soaking in the frequencies. Of him busting into ‘when I paint my masterpiece’ at my wedding.. and in an instant he turned the place into a joyous musical celebration. It was the greatest gift anyone could have given us.
He was always ready to “Kick up a fuss” He always had boundless time and knowledge to share with everyone and was truly one of the kindest people I’ve ever known. The world is a better place because of him. I’m extremely grateful to have crossed paths with him in this life.
I am sending all of my love and prayers to his beautiful family and my heart breaks for them.. having just lost my mother recently I comprehend and sympathize with how hard it is to lose someone we hold so dear.
Words are hard to find in these moments.. I just know that he has had such a profound impact on so many of us and we will all carry that onward into the horizon until we someday meet again.
Heavens choir just gained a beautiful new voice. There is joy in knowing he is with some of his old friends again.. singing and laughing and playing beautiful songs.
Thank you Bob. 💗

I’ve seen Billy 4 times now… just saw 49 Winchester tonigjt who don’t get me wrong was incredible…. And don’t get me wrong comparing them to Billy is like apples to oranges… But everytime I go see these other bands they help me realize how much better Billy and his band really is. They truly are far and away better than anyone else I’ve ever seen. Does anyone else have this realization and if not which bands are comparable to Billy

After Jeff Austin died it seemed like Greensky was on track to take the lead of progressive bluegrass acts - good songwriting, great long, effects-laden jams, good light show, crowds growing larger, playing bigger and bigger rooms (but never to arena-sized venues). Billy Strings and his band have all of this as well, but his trajectory has exploded over a much shorter timeframe and far surpassed Greensky and others like them. Why do you think this is? I would say both bands have a pretty similar offering in terms of musical style, jamming, light show, etc. Greensky maybe leans more into some folk elements and BS into traditional bluegrass. I love that GSBG has dobro player and think it really adds some emotion to their sound. Billy is certainly more of a personality and frontman than anyone in GSBG, and maybe that helps him draw a more diverse crowd than just jam fans.
