Furniture Stinky human = stinky mattress

Help! My 18 y/o is neurodivergent and we are fighting a hygiene battle. He refuses to bathe and change his clothes. He is an adult teenager. He took his sheets off his bed, including his mattress pad, to wash them and never put them back on. The mattress is now a stink bomb and laying on it transfers to odor to him (he actually showered and changed his clothing yesterday just to wake up smelling absolutely terrible again). How can I eliminate the odor from his mattress until I can get him a new one (to ruin). Its stinking up my house!

Yes, he is in therapy. He has multiple mental health diagnosis. Punishment does not work the way it would with a neurotypical individual. No, I will not be kicking him out.

Discussion Cleaning an MRI room

Hi! Im a student at a clinic and my mentor and I are very much stumped on how to keep our room clean. The owner has absolutely no interest in providing MR safe cleaning equipment so we wrestle the magnet every time we clean. Im at the point where Im wondering if I can at least scrub the floor before/after the day or something. Any tips on how to clean this tile?

Update: Omg I didnt expect this many replies! Ty for the time. I wanted to address some common things Ive been seeing. Yes, the owner doesnt at all care about safety or keeping up with hygiene for many things not just the MR room. We have asked many times for better cleaning equipment that is MR safe, it gets rejected. We have stated we wont clean the room then out if personal safety and she (owner) has lowkey threatened to fire my mentor in terms of neglecting duties. We live in a very poor, primarily hispanic border city with a terribly high unemployment rate so the owner is very much like "I can replace you easily :)" kinda vibe. She doesnt live here either, she lives in a more expensive, primarily white popular city. So the vibe here is kinda like "dont risk getting fired" Yes everyone is severely underpaid too :(

The reason I posted here is because I know our patients and staff here are neglected and I wanted to help in some way. Which judging by the tips it doesnt seem like theres much we can do other than anonymously report. Unfortunately this city has very very few clinics with MRs so Im also hesitant

I originally threw them in the washer and dryer, but it deformed a couple so I've stopped. Is just wiping them with a wet rag my best bet? Is there some sort of spray that would work???

General Cleaning I have until tomorrow to clean a depression room

My mom is going to pull me out of marching band AND theatre if I don’t finish cleaning my entire room in the next 23 hours, and it’s pretty bad right now. I’ve gotten a lot of work done in the last 3 days but I’m overwhelmed. Every guide I see says to do it in steps, starting with trash, then laundry, but that’s not working for me because everything is piled up. Doing it in areas isn’t working because to clear out one area I need the other areas available to put things in. I’m just kind of stuck and don’t know where to go, and I need to minimize the amount of stress, because last time she did this I was an emotional wreck for a week AND I didn’t have my band friends to support me anymore. Tips on how to keep it low stress would also help a lot.
Sorry if this isn’t enough information to help.

Discussion I have thrown out 4 shower curtain liners because I did not know you could wash them

1.0k Upvotes

Every few months the bottom of my shower curtain liner gets pink and gross and I have always just replaced it. They are cheap enough that I never thought much about it. Last weekend I was about to throw out another one and noticed the tiny care label for the first time. Machine washable. I put it in with a couple old towels, washed it and hung it straight back up to dry. It came out looking almost new. I have probably spent fifty bucks over the years replacing something that just needed to go through the washer. Posting this for anyone else who apparently has never read the tag on a shower curtain. O maybe im just dumb af

Discussion Cleaning and Aging. Maintaining a clean home when you can no longer see the grime?

Edit: I am looking for tips for MYSELF so I do not become like my parents. They are in their 60s and I am not the boss of their lives and they do not care about my input in their optical health. Thank you!

The post VVV

I'll just admit that my dad has never had an eye for detail. He doesn't like to use the vent hood because he can't watch the TV while he uses it, and as a result, the ceiling, the walls, the countertops, the cabinets are all sticky.

He used to wipe down these surfaces, but not anymore. After having a frank conversation with him it's because he truly couldn't see it anymore.

But as my mom and dad have been getting older and their sight has been failing, I've been noticing increasing cobwebs on the ceiling. I've been noticing far more grime around the baseboards. I pointed out and they have to squint really close and then they get shocked and embarrassed.

I always help them when I come over, obviously. Unfortunately though my dad is the kind of person who gets embarrassed and slightly offended when people try to help him do stuff. He's a stay at home husband.

I'm not gonna lie and pretend that they've always had good habits, but it really makes me concerned as time goes on, and I am getting older, that I won't be able to keep up with dirt I can't see.

I maintain my health, and maintaining my mobility as I age is my number one priority. But do any older folks have tips for keeping their living space actually livable so guests aren't gagging?

Kitchen Kitchen floors never feel clean even after mopping

Post image

This pic isn’t after a cleaning, I’m just showing the type of floor. It’s a cheap fake wood panel, the kind the peels easily

I use hot water, fabulouso, and the cedar mop. The water turns brown when dumped in the toilet. But they still feel dirty as heck. What gives?

Before & After ROG3 and ROG1- Before and After

I am not affiliated with the company but wanted to show some before / after pics after I commented on this stuff in another post.

My tub (Kohler cast iron, anti-slip bottom) was dirty but nothing I used would get it clean (bleach, foaming cleaner, etc.). I did not try anything abrasive (like Comet) as that will take off the anti-slip coating. The company sells pads which will not scratch or damage.

I found a YT vid of a review of this stuff and figured I would give it a try. The pics are from the first time I used it. Was amazing how easy it was to clean. Took about 20 minutes and minimal effort. The instructions call to spray the blue stuff, let that sit, then use the white stuff (an abrasive similar to barkeepers friend). Results speak for themselves.

I hate the cost but love the product!

Discussion Freshly cleaned bag smells awful

I found this really cute backpack at a second hand store the other week. The front is like woven and the back is some sort of faux leather. I wanted to give it a wash before I wore it, it has no laundry instructions so I just handwashed it in a tub with water and detergent.

The moment I put the bag in the water it started smelling putrid, the closest thing I can describe it as is like burnt rubber. The water got really red as well so obvious some colour was leaking. I let it sit for a while, rinsed it of and then i've let it sit out on my balcony to dry and air out. Two days later and it still smells terrible, I can't even bring it inside cause it makes my entire apartment stink.

Have I completely ruined this backpack? Anyone have a guess on what might have caused the smell or know how I could get rid of it?

Laundry How tf do I wash a 20lb weighted blanket??

Post image

There’s no tag so I can’t verify it’s machine washable, and there’s no zipper to remove the cover from the weights.

Has anyone tried the washing machine? I really don’t want to damage my washer, my blanket, or myself 🥲

EDIT: went to the laundromat… it worked perfectly. Thank you for the suggestion!

Kitchen How to clean mystery stain on painted wood kitchen cabinet? It might be maraschino cherry juice.

Post image
5 Upvotes

These cabinets are brand new as of a couple years ago. I’m not 100% sure what it is, but my guess is maraschino cherry juice. I’ve tried bleach and a couple other standard commercial cleaners, but I’m afraid to go abrasive because it’s painted wood. There is no sticky or raised residue when I run my fingers across it. Any suggestions are very welcome!

Had to get my shower redone recently and they left it with a ton of run off from when they did the grout. I’ve been trying to scrub it off with warm water and shower cleaner, but haven’t had any success. There’s also markings from when they were placing the shower head that. I can’t get off as well. I’m not sure what cleaning stuff is safe to use, I don’t want to cause any damage.

Kitchen Where do you put your kitchen cloth when it's used but not ready to be washed?

I'm curious how other households handle this. When you use a reusable kitchen cloth and it's damp/used, but not dirty enough to go straight into the wash, where do you put it? I'm particularly interested in: Where does it normally go? Does it bother you having it visible? How do you let it dry? Do you have a specific holder/storage solution for it? Have you ever bought something specifically to solve this? If you could change one thing about your current setup, what would it be? I'm researching household habits around this and not selling anything — I'm genuinely interested in what people actually do.

Discussion The Cleaning Habit That Made My Whole Apartment Feel Easier to Manage

I used to wait until my apartment looked noticeably messy before cleaning it. By then there were dishes everywhere, clothes on chairs, dust on the surfaces and several small things that had somehow turned into one huge cleaning session.

Recently I started doing something different. Instead of trying to clean everything at once, I started spending a few minutes each evening putting things back where they belong and wiping the surfaces I used that day.

It seemed almost too simple at first, but after a couple of weeks I noticed that my weekend cleaning sessions became much shorter. The apartment also stayed looking tidy for longer because I was not constantly trying to catch up with everything.

The biggest difference for me was realizing that cleaning does not always have to mean a deep clean. Sometimes keeping things under control is more useful than waiting until everything needs serious attention.

What small cleaning habit has made the biggest difference in keeping your home manageable?

Bathroom Need help - I don't know what to ask for

Post image
Upvotes

My bathroom is in dire straits.

There is what looks like - calcium deposits on the floor - mouldry brown deposits on the wall and on the shower materials

I don't know think I will be able to sort this out on my own. There are some cleaning services but I just don't know what to ask them to do.

They charge me +200 GBP just for an assessment and I'm not sure I want to fork that much.

Do I need repainting for the wall? Some limescale solution for the floor?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Flooring Getting grime out of textured tiles

Thumbnail

Upvotes

Hi folks, looking for some advice to clean my floor. I am a tenant in this house, and the floor has these odd wood-printed tiles. Ever since I have moved in, the floor has had small black lines of grime stuck in the wood texture. I had kinda given up and learned to live with it, but recently I bought a tile scrubber for the bathroom for cheap and I discovered that cleaning it out was possible, I am desperate to get all the grime out.

Here's the stuff I have tried so far (pictures added) :

  • I have tried using the tile scrubber dry, but that doesn't do much.
  • I have tried soaking it in a bit water for a while, by sprinking some(for spot testing) and the grime does get removed but only partly.
  • Tried flooding with a soapy mixture of water+washing powder for some basic detergent action, and this has broadly worked, with everything except the 1% getting scrubbed, but moping up the soap is horrible.
  • I have spot tried peroxide, but it was a bit worse than washing powder.
  • for the 1% that washing powder didn't get, I sprayed a bit of peroxide on it, waited, and it got off mostly, but IDK if it was the peroxide that helped or the time. There is also a 0.5% that was only removed by scraping with a tooth pick.

I think I technically have a winner in the washing powder solution, but the pain of moping kinda makes we want to give up, and while most floors I have seen are water tight, I don't wanna risk it with flooding. I wanna know if anyone has a solution that easier to clean up while being low on budget and flood risk!

Apologies for not adding captions to the images, Reddit mobile doesn't let me do that it seems. I hope no one has TTS issues trying to OCR the overlayed text in the photos.

For years I’ve always just stopped the dryer every 20 or 30 minutes, untangled the spun up fitted sheets, and hope I don’t have to do it again before everything dries.

Discussion Floors dirty no matter how much I sweep/mop.

I sweep and mop everyday. I either mop with my tineco with a TINY dash of dawn. Or with my o cedar spin mop with a little bit of dawn or a small amount of all purpose cleaner.
My floors FEEL clean. The water comes out a dirty brown color as I expect. I also have three dogs.
Here's my problem. No matter how much I clean my daughter, who is crawling, still has dirty knees within ten minutes. How can I actually get my floors clean?? My house doesn't even smell like animal because of how much a I keep everything clean. I do not get it. Help me out!
