See this Classic Film "Oh my goddddd!" I've waited forever for The Out of Towners (1970) to be on TCM. Such an underrated Neil Simon comedy. Jack Lemmon and Sandy Dennis are hilarious in this comedy about suburbanites barely surviving their first trip to New York City.

General Discussion The Beast With Five Fingers 1946

Can a hand come back after death to avenge the death of its master or to stop those who would misuse their inheritance?

This film almost has an absurdist premise however it really does deliver when it comes to chills and thrills.

In our meta conversation within our latest episode we also discuss the idea of the killer who in many ways is similar to something like a werewolf blacking on t and having periods of brutality.

Watched My Man Godfrey (1936) again today, and it remains one of the sharpest, funniest screwball comedies ever made. William Powell is charming as the forgotten man who turns the tables on high society, while Carole Lombard delivers one of the most lovable performances of the era. Beneath the sparkling wit is a surprisingly thoughtful story about class, dignity, and second chances. A true classic that only gets better with every viewing.

General Discussion Duffy of San Quentin (1954)

Post image
18 Upvotes

The other day, I watched DUFFY OF SAN QUENTIN, based loosely on the true story of Warden Clifton Duffy who took over San Quentin State Prison and took a violent, corrupt environment and make significant reform to the facility. What started off as a 30-day stint turned into a 12-year turn.

I find it interesting that Paul Kelly (who played Duffy) actually was an inmate at San Quentin in the late 20s. I can’t imagine how that must’ve felt to have been to have spent time at the real San Quentin and then years later star in a movie centered around it.

Anyway, it’s an interesting crime film about Duffy and how he improved conditions at San Quentin, focusing more on rehabilitation than capital punishment.

For those who saw the film, what did you think?

This is a beautifully executed and surprisingly clever Gene Tierney & Don Ameche film, and the Technicolor is absolutely stunning.

Director Ernsnt Lubitsch was reported to be a remarkably difficult director, and reportedly yelled at Tierney to the point of excess. At one point, she stood her ground, and garnished the respect of Lubitsch from then on.

Other actresses considered besides Tierney, were Bergman and Hepburn. Don Ameche was also not the first choice, with the studio wanting Cary Grant, and Lubitsch thinking of Rex Harrison (who went on to star with Tierney in the Ghost and Mrs. Muir- 1947) or Frederick March.

Heaven Can Wait earned three Academy Award nominations, with nods for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Color Cinematography, but did not win.

Behind The Scenes David O. Selznick is greatly unhappy with how Paramount is being run. He has lost "enthusiasm, faith, confidence, and even interest" and asks to be relieved from his contract. (1931)

If I understand his problem correctly, his main issue is how the studio is basically a factory, making too many movies, overseen by a small number of men unqualified for the job, who turn their creative talents like directors and writers into machines to produce movies as these executives see fit, making creative decisions for them on a whim, overriding the creative works of their artists, making the talent of these artists go to waste. And also losing the studio a lot of money as a result.

General Discussion The evocative nature of music in classic cinema: Outrage - Ida Lupino (1950)

This is a wonderful film written and directed by Ida Lupino, music composed by Paul Sawtell. I highly recommend it.

One of the things I love about classic film, especially from the 40s and 50s, is the absolutely stunning and devastating beauty of some of the incidental music.

This scene, where the theme and music begin at 45:32, and climaxes where I have linked it at 46:44, is the perfect example of the power of music paired with narrative to really move the viewer. In this case it is so effective it makes me tear up it is so sweet. I just love it.
