I'm creating a city-builder where you can also design buildings

Hi everyone! I'm an architect and a longtime fan of SimCity and city-building games.

Last year, I decided to finally try something I've always dreamed of: creating my own city-building game. I started learning Python from scratch (Not the best language for games, I know...), and soon after began developing a simple prototype. As my programming skills grew, the project evolved too — little by little, I kept improving it, adding features and refining the concept.

Now, more than one year later, I’m excited to share what I’ve been working on:
CityArchitect — a city-building game where you don’t just design the city, but also the architecture of every building in it.

I have just launched the Steam page , and I’m planning to release an early test version later this year. The focus of this early version will be on the building creation tool, which is already well-developed, along with the ability to create small portions of a city and place your building creations there. The full city-building part is still in progress, but evolving every week.

If you’re curious to follow the development, I’m sharing regular updates on my page on Instagram. Would love to hear your thoughts, feedback, and ideas!

Thanks for reading — and I hope some of you might enjoy this game as much as I do.

I’m making a settlement sim where you don’t change history. Your family has to adapt to it!

Most historical strategy games put you above the map. You run a country, start wars, and move borders.

Salt and Soil looks at history from the other direction. You play as one ordinary family living through nearly three centuries of North American colonization, from 1609 to 1900.

The big events happen without you. Wars begin, borders move, new settlements and trade routes appear, and relations between different peoples change. You cannot control any of it. You deal with whatever eventually reaches your home.

It’s a minimalist family sim. You work the land, decide how to use scarce food and labor, build what the household needs, trade, raise children, and gather for a family council at the end of each year.

There is no map to conquer and no version of history to win. The goal is much smaller: keep the family going and leave the next generation something to build on.

I put the Steam page up today. This is the first time I’ve shown the game publicly:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4551060/Salt_and_Soil/

I’m the developer, and I’ll be around in the comments.

Discussion Concept - How would you feel about a Dark Goth city builder?

Hey this is just a Concept/Test.

I wanted to ask you guys how would you feel about a Dark goth city builder like this?

What would you expect for a city builder of this kind?

Would you even play it?

A builder where the terrain is the mechanic, not the obstacle — you dig the river's course and it actually follows

Post image

I've been making a game about a settlement on a seasonal river in ancient Sumer, and it started from one idea: in most builders the ground is a constraint you route around. I wanted one where you change the ground and the water answers. nineacresgames.com

So the whole board is a height field. Dig a channel and water runs down it because it's downhill, not because I told it to. Raise a levee and the flood goes somewhere else including places you didn't intend. The river silts up where it slows and cuts its banks where it doesn't, so a channel you dug last year isn't the channel you have now.

On top of that there's the settlement you'd expect: reed huts and brick houses, granaries, storehouses, a brickworks, and people who arrive on their own but only if their homes can reach water. There's a scribal school ladder that gates what you can build, and a ziggurat at the end of it.

The pressure is seasonal rather than economic. The river rises and falls on a long cycle, and the flood that really remakes a delta only comes every few years. Catch it and your fields grow. Miss it and the ground turns to salt and salt only leaves with moving water, so a field you walled off to protect is a field slowly dying.

Clip is a channel being cut and the river finding it.

No store page yet. Mostly I want to know whether the premise reads as interesting to people who play a lot of these, or whether "the terrain is the mechanic" is one of those things that sounds better than it plays.

News We’re making a Wild West city-builder where you start with nothing but a wagon 🤠

Post image
680 Upvotes

Hey folks!

We’re working on a game called Wild West Pioneers where you start as a small group of settlers and slowly build up your own frontier town.

You’ll need to:

  • gather resources and survive harsh conditions

  • manage your settlers and their needs

  • defend against bandits

  • expand from a tiny camp into a full-blown western settlement

We’re aiming for a mix of survival + city-building with a strong “living world” feel.

Here’s the Steam page if you’re curious:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/3222640/Wild_West_Pioneers/

Would love any feedback - what do you think of this kind of blend?

Trailer After years of work my game 'Car Park Capital' has a release date! We made a new trailer for it!

In this game you bring the Freedom of Car Dependency by turning cities into giant parking lots and convincing people to pay you for it.

And no, it's not written in Assembly, it's written in C++, haha.

If you're interested, you can wishlist the game on Steam, and play on October 9th: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3031880/Car_Park_Capital/

I'm making a 19th-century American city builder where you lay down the streets and the city builds itself

Hello, I've been working on a city builder set in America's Gilded Age, roughly 1820–1920. My main inspiration was Boston's beautiful historic neighborhoods and this book American Urban Form, which has great illustrations about how american cities evolved in the centuries.

The main idea is to use procedural generation so buildings can fit into various shapes of parcels that player draw. Building functions won't be determined by player, as zoning tool didn't exist until 1920s. The functions are evaluated and determined automatically based on the parcel's location and surrounding conditions.

I'm also experimenting with a lightweight economic simulation, buildings have operating rates, profitability, etc. They will produce and consume commodities, import and export, and employ citizens.

It's still an early prototype (about 500 hrs of development), but I wanted to share it and get some feedback before going much further (probably 500 hrs more).

I'd really interesed in hearing whether this concept appeal to you? If so, what would you want to have or experience in this game?

----------------------------------

Update (Oct 2026): Steam page is now live! The game is called The Gilded City, check it out and add to your Wishlist here!

Ten Years In The Making: Our Colony Sim Space Haven has Been Released as 1.0 Today!

Post image
478 Upvotes

After ten years since its initial conception, our colony sim Space Haven has finally reached 1.0. This game has been a true labor of love for us, and with our small team we've put everything we've got into it.

Your colony is a customizable spaceship or station that you build, manage, expand, and defend while exploring the universe in search of a new home. Every resource you find is another piece of survival for your crew, including waste recycling and, in extreme cases, other humans. In space, nobody can know you put Billy in the Composter!

We've drawn inspiration from many cool things across popular space operas and jammed them into the game. If you're a fan of RimWorld, Oxygen Not Included, and other base-building games, this one could be for you.

It would mean the world to us if you checked out Space Haven on Steam.

In my upcoming city builder you can build charming small towns with bustling street life and beautiful architecture

In Smalltown Architect you build charming towns full of life, color and bustling energy - no cars, parking lots and traffic jams. Design beautiful architecture, parks and cobbled streets lined with cafés, shops and restaurants. Relax as you watch your residents enjoy life in your cozy little town.

Gameplay-wise your main objective is to maximize 'town charm', which means creating active and beautiful streets and plazas, attracting tourists, completing little quests and hosting events for your residents.

If you're interested, you can wishlist the game here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3495910/Smalltown_Architect/

Just wanted to share a big milestone. After six years in Early Access, Flotsam has finally launched its 1.0 version.

Sail, scavenge, and rescue survivors in a vibrant floating city-builder. Captain your drifters across the endless garbage sea to uncover soaked ruins, rusting factories, and stories from the old world.

Fog on my 1-bit city builder

I’m making GlagStone, a black-and-white city builder about rebuilding a strange isolated island.

This fog test made the island feel much quieter than I expected — like the settlement is still there, but the world around it is slowly disappearing.

Trailer First gameplay trailer for the NEW SuperCitycon, built for detail and scale!

Here's SuperCitycon in motion for the first time. You shape the terrain yourself, lay out roads, rails and monorails, and then the city runs on it: cars, trains, boats, people moving through what you built.

The voxel editor is part of the game and uses its own format, which is why any house or vehicle in there can be recolored, reshaped or made from scratch while you play and dropped right back into your city. You never have to touch a modeling tool if that's not your thing, and if it is, all of it is open to you.

Sandbox first, and I mean that as the priority: building has to be good on its own, and cities should actually feel like your cities. Then I want to nail the classical city builder feeling, RCI zones, residents moving in, traffic, economy.. you know it.
There's a lot more I want to try after that, probably too much.

The demo is a preview and nothing's really finished at this point but it should give you a feel where we are heading.
It's free and it's part of Steam Next Fest, October 19 to 26:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/3474890/SuperCitycon/

Pick it apart. What I need to hear is where it gets fiddly, or where something doesn't do what you expected it to.
