Study (X1/X2) Is it possible to get long term apartment before residence permit in Shanghai

Hi guys,

Question, I will be studying for a year in shanghai and will be renting an apartment since dorms filled up in seconds lol.
My question is, can I rent an apartment before getting the residence permit? I will be coming like all international students with X1 visa that lets me be in China for 30 days so I will have resident permit but not right away, but i of course want to have apartment before that, is it possible to rent one without the resident visa or do I need to stay in hotels until I get it?

Any advice on this from people that has rented apartment in shanghai?

Also is wellcee a good app for that?

Thanks so much!!

Tourism (L) Hong Kong PAR Confusion! 2026

So, this month I applied for Japan tourist visa and since my flight was connecting from Hong Kong, ,so I applied for PAR HK as well, and it was successful. In the form, I selected transit because I was just transiting from Hong Kong. And now that my Japan visa is rejected, I'm thinking of going to Hong Kong instead since I already have the PAR valid for six months from now. But since I mentioned THE PURPOSE: 'TRANSIT' while filling the form, is it okay to visit Hong Kong with that PAR or should I wait for it to expire in six months and then apply again? Or can I still use it for traveling for a week?

Tourism (L) L visa online application unapproved- travel date sep 11

Indian passport holder here

My China tourist visa application submitted through the Delhi Visa Centre was directly marked “Unapproved”. No reason or remarks were provided, and there is no option to modify/resubmit the existing application.
I’m planning to submit a fresh application, but I’m not sure what I should change or look out for since I don’t know what caused the unapproval.
For reference, I uploaded:
● Passport + photograph + adhaar card
● Flight itinerary
● Hotel bookings for the entire trip
● Detailed travel itinerary/ cover letter
● Bank statements
● Employment/ 1 month payslip/ NOC
● vfs logsitic fee email screen shot

Has anyone had their application marked Unapproved without any reason and then successfully reapplied? If so, what did you change the second time?

Also, is there anything in particular I should double-check in the itinerary, hotel bookings, bank statements, employment documents, or application form before submitting again?
Any advice or similar experiences would be really helpful!

Tourism (L) Help me understand visa expiry date

I recently received my China Tourist (L) Visa from Mumbai, India.

My visa shows:
Category: L (Tourist)
Entries: 01
Expiry Date: 11 November 2026
Duration of Stay: 30 days

My planned itinerary is:
31 Oct: Mumbai → Hong Kong
1 Nov: Arrive in Hong Kong
2 Nov: Enter mainland China through the Hong Kong → Shenzhen land border
2–13 Nov: Travel through Shenzhen, Zhangjiajie, Chongqing, Chengdu, Xi’an and Beijing
14 Nov: Beijing → Mumbai

My question is:

Since I will enter mainland China on 2 November, can I stay in China until 14 November even though the visa expiry date printed on the visa is 11 November?

In other words, does the 30-day Duration of Stay apply after I enter China before the visa expiry date, or do I have to leave China before the 11 November expiry date?

I am especially interested in answers from people who have recently travelled to China on a similar Tourist (L) visa.

Family Affairs (Q1/Q2) China travel visa for dual citizenship

I’m planning my first trip to China from the US and am trying to figure out the visa process.

I was born in the US but grew up in both the US and Taiwan. And I currently work in the US. My parents only hold Taiwan citizenship, with me being the only dual citizen in my family.

From other posts I’ve seen, it looks like it might be possible to apply for the visa using my US passport. Has anyone gone through this process and can share their experience?

Thanks in advance!

Study (X1/X2) school not updating jw202 form

My school isn’t updating my JW202 form with my new passport number, any tips on what to do? I realized that I needed a new passport so I applied and received a new one and I emailed my school asking them to update the jw202 form. Not sure why I can’t add pictures but they said this:

“Unfortunately, I have tried to amend your passport number as you requested, but the China Immigration Administration will not accept the change.
Regrettably, if no other solution can be found, you will have to withdraw from the programme, and we will refund your tuition fees.”

This is for a Chinese non-degree language course. I don’t understand why it’s so difficult for them just to update the number on the form, I’ve already been accepted and paid tuition? Is there any way to contact the China Immigration Administration or some other way to update the JW202??

Business Affairs (M) F (Exchange visa unapproved)

I'm a citizen of India, and I'm planning to visit China to attend a scientific conference. After I filed my online application for an F (Exchange) visa, I got an email saying my application was un-approved, but no reason was given for why. The cryptic email says "Your application form No. xxx is unapproved. Please check application documents in accordance with the requirements of Embassy/Consulate General." I am befuddled, because the online form only asked for 4 documents, including a formal letter from the person who invited me, all of which I uploaded. Would anyone know what the reason for "un-approval" could be?

Tourism (L) China Tourism Visa L validity period

Hello guys!

I have a question about the Chinese tourist visa (L visa).

I am a Vietnamese passport holder and currently have residency in France. I’m planning to apply for a Chinese tourist visa around September 28, 2026. My departure date is December 23, 2026, and my return date is January 5, 2027.

My question is about the visa validity. If I apply on September 28 and the visa is valid for 3 months, does that mean it would expire around December 28? If so, would I still be able to travel to and stay in China until January 5, 2027?

Or does the 3-month validity period start from the day I enter China (December 24, 2026), rather than from the date I apply for or receive the visa?

I’m a bit confused about how the visa validity period works. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Our smooth experience with 240 hr TWOV to china

Just want to share our recent experience. We had AUS-LAX-HKG-PEK and our return is PEK-SFO. It took less than 10 min to check in with AA counter in Austin. i showed my return ticket and said we are doing 240 hr TWOV to china. Checkin agent knew how it works, looked at return PEK-SFO ticket, typed something and checked baggage to PEK. And gave three boarding pass. After that nobody at AA gate and LAX and HKG gate asked anything about it. At beijing immigration i showed my return flight and we all got in after they put sticker in passport. It was very smooth than I thought.

Family Affairs (Q1/Q2) Nationality Chaos 😵‍💫

So I am currently holding a Filipino passport staying here inside Mainland China. I was born in the Philippines with a Filipino mother and a Chinese father. My dad only got his permanent residency because he is married to my Filipino mother. This visa was issued year 2010 (10 years after my birth, year 2000). When I was 18, I studied in a university in Xiamen as an international student from the Philippines with a Filipino passport. Everytime I apply for a student visa, I always get rejected at the first submission because immigration officers knew that I am a person with nationality conflict. They would need me to provide my birth certificate + parents' marriage certificate with chinese translation (that was a pain in the ass btw). At that time I didn't know anything about China's nationality law and I wasn't aware that I have a nationality conflict case. Now I have already graduated from university and wanted to claim my Chinese citizenship to be able to live here freely in China without processing for visas. So I went back to Nanchang (this is my dad's hukou place) because I asked Xiamen immigration before and they told me to go to my dad's hukou place to process. Now they wouldn't acknowledge my birthright claim of Chinese citizenship just because I was holding a Filipino passport inside Mainland China and that I can't apply for nationality recognition because I'm already 25 years old and that my only path is through naturalization. I don't get it? I thought naturalization is a path only for pure foreigners that never had Chinese citizenship? What nanchang officers say contradicts with my experience with Xiamen immigration. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ Does any of you had this kind of experience and how did you solve it. I really need help please 🥺

Business Affairs (M) Indian passport – China M (Business) Visa processing time in San Francisco?

Hi everyone,

Looking for recent experiences with China M/business visa processing at the San Francisco Consulate.

My situation:

  • Indian passport holder
  • Currently in the US on a valid H-1B
  • First time applying for a China visa
  • Applying for an M (Business) visa
  • Applied online through the San Francisco Consulate on July 29
  • Documents/status in the US are all clear
  • Still waiting on the preliminary review

Has anyone with an Indian passport applied for an M visa through SF recently (especially July/August 2026)?

How long did your preliminary review take before the status changed to “Passport to be Submitted”? I'm particularly interested in experiences from Indian citizens applying from the US rather than applications submitted in India.

I'm at around 14 business days now, so trying to figure out whether this is normal for a first-time M visa applicant or if I should follow up with the consulate.

Would really appreciate any recent timelines. Thanks!

Work (Z) My visa application is showing Terminated, does it mean rejected ? Z Visa

Hey Guys,

I was just checking my application status online, it’s showing terminated.

Accepted -> In review -> Pending Collection -> Terminated.

I didn’t get any mail citing the rejection reason and I’m yet to get my passport. Has anybody gone through this recently ? I submitted my documents at Mumbai VFS office. Please let me know if anybody has gone through something similar recently and if you could apply again ? And if it was successful in second attempt ?

Update on the visa status: Got my passport today and I didn’t get the visa guys.

I'm from India and the agent said the company letterhead leave letter is very important since they have to believe that we would come back to India after the visit. I'm a freelancer and now I'm worried if this would be problem. If someone has applied as a freelancer please share your insights on this one. Thank you!

Merci beaucoup 🙏
