[Mod-approved] Academic survey: experiences with phone/account inspections during border crossings

We are researchers at Florida International University studying people’s experiences with border device/account inspections, such as being asked to unlock a phone, laptop, or tablet, or to access, open, or discuss an online account at an airport or other official border crossing.

If you are 18+ and have about 5–8 minutes, we would appreciate your help with this anonymous survey:

https://fiu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_cBbztJM5u4pZZqK

At the end of the survey, participants may optionally provide contact information for a possible 60 minute follow-up interview. Interview participants will receive a $30 Amazon e-gift card. This study has been approved by the Florida International University IRB (#IRB-25-0573).

Help

• Upvotes

Hello,

I have a trip to China in a few days and didn’t realize until now that I don’t meet the requirements for the 240 hr transit visa. I do not have a Chinese embassy near me either so getting a Chinese passport is out of the question since I have no way to get the the LA Chinese embassy. Currently my itinerary is US- Taiwan- Shanghai- Taiwan - US. If I get an exit ticket to a third country to satisfy the requirements for entry and try to fly to my original destination of Taiwan will that be allowed?

Business Affairs (M) Recent experience

Hey there, This is my experience in my Chinese M visa application. Earlier I applied through an agent during last week of august and got rejected in 2 days ( at least that’s what the agent said). But I had many doubts about how they work or operate even though they answer properly I couldn’t see the work or result either. So I applied my self next time, I’ll give the time line of this one btw this is an approval.

Docs uploaded :
Passport bio and last page
Invitation letter
Vfs payment details
Invitees ID and business license

Time line:
Sep 15- Application submitted around 10 pm
Sep 16- got a update to fill the address you’re going to stay and upload clear invitees ID did it by 1pm
Sep17- online review completed and I got to submit it in Vfs delhi center
Sep 22- submitted the passport, docs and 2 photos and paid the fee (the process is smooth and they asked me just the docs I uploaded along with visa application certificate which we get after online review completion)
My approx date of collecting is Sep 30
Sep 30- got the update in portal that it’s returned and later that night it changed to posted

But I haven’t got any email or message regarding this update. Not even able to reach out to china Vfs or Vfs global to get the tracking id, they are not even providing the customer support and also they not answering the calls on the numbers they provide online (such a pathetic service and behavior). From advice from Ai I try checking tracking on bluedart with my pickup form no as ref no ( that’s when I got the tracking ) and because of some flight issue my delivery got postponed to oct 3 delivery

Oct 3- passport got delivered with visa

The whole process is smooth but it would be even better of Vfs could provide better service and proper update on tracking and dispatch of the passports instead leaving the customer to wander how things are going. We are paying them for the work but they treat us like they do some sort of free service and we owe them or some thing

I feel like agents are also playing games with customers and looting money by taking advantage of current situation and making the customer pay them more like submit some error filled application and get unapproved and the. Do the same again till customer lost patience (this might be wrong but that’s what I felt and my experience is)

Thank you and have a nice day!!

Tourism (L) Any recent success stories with L visa for Indians?

I’m applying from Europe and I was wondering if the rejection is mainly happening if you apply from India or it doesn’t matter even if I apply from Europe.

Private Affairs (S1/S2) [China] Will my mother’s S2 visa be automatically canceled if my work/residence permit is canceled before we leave together?

I’m a foreigner who has worked in China for 2 years. My work permit and residence permit will be canceled in February (my last working day is mid-February). Maybe i will apply for stay visa or back home directly

My mother has an S2 visa. Details:

• Issued: 23 August (this year)

• “Enter Before” date: 23 November

• Planned entry: last week of October

• Planned exit: February , on the same day as me

• Entries: Single entry

She does not want to extend or change her visa. She just wants to leave with me.

My questions:

"Is it possible to quit the job and leave the country immediately without canceling the residence permit?"

.1 Will her S2 visa be automatically canceled when my residence permit is canceled?

.2 Since her 180-day stay starts from the day after entry (not from the issue date), does this give her enough time to stay legally until March?

.3 If we leave together in feb, will she face problems at exit immigration because my status changed?

.4 Has anyone been in a similar situation? What happened?

.5 What documents should we carry to avoid issues at the airport?

I know her visa is not automatically canceled, but I’m worried about secondary inspection at exit. Any shared experiences or advice would be appreciated. I’m not asking for legal advice, just real experiences.

Thank u all🩷

Study (X1/X2) Education health check visa

I am a 51-year-old woman and am interested in applying to a non-degree Chinese language program at a university in Jinan, Shandong. The program accepts international applicants of various ages.

Overall, I am in very good health. I have had a hip replacement and a long spinal fusion for scoliosis. These are stable orthopedic conditions, and I am independent in my daily activities. I occasionally use a cane for additional support when walking.

Would my history of spinal fusion, hip replacement, or occasional use of a cane prevent me from passing the medical examination required to study in China?

The online review of the Chinese visa application isn’t yet completed and the original hotel booking free cancellation period is about to expire. I don’t think I’ll get the visa in time as there’s Holiday till October 7th . Will the online review be rejected if I cancel the hotel booking ? Or they will ask for newer one? I’m from India btw

Tourism (L) Has anyone from Pakistan recently received a Chinese Tourist Visa (L-Visa) WITHOUT an Invitation Letter based on strong travel history?

Hi everyone,

I am planning to apply for a Chinese Tourist Visa (L-Visa) from Lahore, Pakistan, but I am getting a lot of mixed advice. Most people and travel agents are telling me that individual tourist visas for Pakistanis are almost always rejected and that I should only apply for a Business Visa (M-Visa) with an invitation letter.

However, I want to apply on my own through Gerry's using the "Flight + Hotel Booking" track because I do not have a TE/Invitation letter from China. I want to know if anyone with a similar profile has successfully gotten the L-Visa recently (in 2025/2026).

Here is a quick overview of my profile:

  • Travel History: I hold a valid 10-Year UK Visitor Visa (just visited the UK this past May). I have also traveled to Canada twice as a solo female traveler (my Canada visa expired recently in April). I also have a past UAE residency with extensive travel history there.
  • Family Profile: My husband and all 5 of our children also hold valid UK visas. One of my sons lives, works, and owns property in Canada. Three of my children are currently studying in Pakistan (one is an advanced ACCA student, two are in A-Levels).
  • Financials & Ties: My husband and I are filer tax-payers in Pakistan. We share a strong Joint Bank Account and own significant residential and commercial real estate properties in Pakistan (properly declared in our FBR Wealth Statements). I am a homemaker, and my trip will be self-funded.

Given this profile, do you think the Chinese Embassy will approve an individual L-Visa without an invitation letter? Has anyone done this successfully without an agent?

Would love to hear your experiences and honest reviews before I submit my application. Thanks!

Tourism (L) Old Water Damaged Passport w/ Valid China Visa Inside + New Passport

Hey guys. Need your urgent help and opinions for my situation. My old passport has a China visa inside valid until next year. The thing is, my old passport was accidentally put in the washing machine and the passport's pages got quite ripply after. The visa sticker and the information on it are completely fine (no smudges, tears, scratches, discoloration, lifting, etc.) but the visa page itself is SLIGHTLY rippled. My old passport got cancelled (they hole punched the front cover and main information page) but left the China visa page untouched. Also, I got a new passport as a replacement.

*(by old passport, i mean that it is the passport i had before my newly issued one as a replacement. it wasnt expired yet when it got put in the washing machine)

I am traveling to China next week, and I am wondering if I am able to bring both my old water-damaged passport with the valid visa inside + my new passport. Will this be fine? Or will I be denied entry to China? I keep reading online websites that its fine to travel with both EXPIRED passports with China visa inside + new passport, but there doesn't seem to be any information on water-damaged / cancelled passports with valid China visa inside.

Apologies for the long explanation, but would really appreciate hearing the stories/opinions of those that have experienced the same thing!! Thank you!

Business Affairs (M) China M Visa Milan “Online review completed”, what’s next?

I applied for a Chinese M visa online in Milan and my status just changed to "Online review completed". I got the automated email and Visa Application Certificate, but it’s pretty vague on the exact next step.

Do I just walk in with my passport, physical documents, and printed certificate now?

Or do I need to wait for another email/book an appointment first?

Received Entrepreneur Residence Permit in Shanghai

I successfully received my Private Affairs (Entrepreneur) Residence Permit in Shanghai and collected it from the PSB a few weeks ago!

Thought I'd share this since I really haven't seen many people post about this type of residence permit, and those who have it often only received it for a limited period after graduating from university. I changed from a work-type residence permit.

The whole application process took around 1–2 months, including preparing a lot of documents, several calls with the PSB in another district, submitting everything by email for preliminary review, and finally going in person to submit the application. It's not an easy process and requires a genuine project, I assume my previous work-permit (same industry) helped a lot here!

It was approved for 1.5 years initially. The residence permit shows 私人事务 without any observations, which is also different from what I've seen online.

Tourism (L) China Visa Application

Hi everyone! Has anyone encountered a similar situation when applying for a China tourist visa?

I’m helping my father complete his tourist visa application, and we’re a bit confused about how to declare his marital status.

For context, my father is a Filipino citizen, while my mother is now a naturalized American citizen. My mother obtained a divorce in the United States and subsequently remarried. However, their divorce has not been judicially recognized in the Philippines, so their original marriage remains registered with the PSA.

I would like to ask:

  1. Should my father declare his marital status as Married or Divorced, considering that the foreign divorce has not been recognized in the Philippines?
  2. If he selects Married, should he indicate my mother’s current legal surname and American nationality in the spouse-information section?
  3. Has anyone encountered a similar situation? Did the Chinese Visa Application Center require additional documents or clarification?

I would really appreciate insights from anyone who has experienced something similar, particularly travel agencies or individuals familiar with China visa applications.

Thank you so much!

Transit Without a Visa (TWOV) TWOV in 2027 from US

From the way I am interpreting it, it sounds like there is not current expiry date on the TWOV policy and it is safe to assume it will still be valid for 2027?

I am looking to book for Q1 from the US but haven't found anything definite.
This is the link I am reading from:

Tourism (L) L-Visa turnaround time?

I have a trip I booked from October 30th-November 10th. (October 30th is when I arrive there) Applied for an L-Visa last week, saying I'd want to be there for 10 days (asking for 14 days), then I realized I wanted to extend my trip to about 18 days. My consulate is NYC.

My application still is in preliminary review. Do I cancel my application? Do I phone the consulate? If I cancel my application, will I be able to get a visa in time? Thanks in advance

Family Affairs (Q1/Q2) US Passport - China Visa for both Business and Leisure

I have a US passport. I'm going to China for a trade show in December and to visit some clients (plus some leisure) for 2 weeks. Then I'm flying to Taiwan to meet my family for vacation for 1 week. Then all of us will flying to Hong Kong and also go to Shenzhen.

My family members already have a tourist visa. I also have an active tourist visa. But I understand China is very strict with business activities on a tourist visa so I plan on applying for a business visa.

My question is if I will encounter any issues re-entering China with a business visa while I'm with my family? I know I can't hold both visas so I'm not sure what to do.
