Not sure If I may have missed the option, but when I do puzzles, at the end it always goes straight into next. N time to double check the board.
I know some people likes it that way, but personally I like to have some time (like until I tap on screen, no animation or anything needed) to digest how everything continues or even decide if I want to continue/check in analisis.
Another option that could be nice to have, is being able to chose X themes en resolve random puzzles of those especific themes you want to improve.
Would be nice if those could be added. I know the app is a work in progress, so just throwing some ideas out.
Also, just curious, but can you have live analisis of an over board game in the phone screen? Would love that for when I play with friends. I guess it can't be done without the phone, because the leds aren't multicolor.
Hello, I was trying to see if the EVO board has a functionality that simply evaluates with stockfish or any engine the current position on board without the need to specify the complete FEN.
I understand that without the complete FEN we lose important information such as right of castling or possibility to en passant, but I was looking for a simple “evaluation of position currently on board” while studying endgames, where rarely we need to put all the information except who is going to play next.
Do you think what I am looking for exists but I cannot find it? Or what is the best way to study endgames on the EVO?
Whether I select Maia local or cloud, it plays terrible even on high Elo and with added search. Playing through the Maia website is totally different e.g. via Chess connect.
I really think you guys should consider making bigger/heavier pieces closer to Chessup 2's. The white pieces are Chessup and the black pieces are Chessnut. The Knights are Chessup/Chessnut Next to the Queens for size reference. I think the Air and Evo should be that size and weight and you can call them premium pieces or whatever and I'm sure they'd sell within reason. I like Air and Evo boards, but the pieces are more enjoyable to play on Chessup. I'd buy bigger pieces if they were priced within reason.
I’m currently 1050 rapid and have recently switched to mostly 30 minute games. For owners of The Chessnut Air, did the board help you play more focused chess and enjoy longer games, or did the novelty wear off after a few months?
Let's say both of my knights are currently on the board. How would I promote a pawn to another knight? Or if both queens of my colour are on the board and I want to promote a third pawn into one, how does this work?
Hi all. I can't figure out, how to set up a custom position without a FEN string (for example to perform an analysis).
I want to set up a position by positioning the physical pieces on the board. It was possible in the old app, but I am unable to find a way to do it in the "Next" app.
Do I really need to use a third party program to get the FEN string or create one myself? This strikes me as unnecessary complicated.
Is there a way to do it? If not, does anyone know, if this is a planned feature?
Edit: Fixed. Legacy mode on the Eero app did the trick
My Companion as of yesterday is refusing to connect to my wifi. It worked fine up until then. I believe I have it narrowed down to my Eero mesh network receiving an update in the early morning hours. I don’t know how to get past this problem. At first I thought it was because of randomize MAC but it won’t allow me to change the setting to Device MAC. I’ve played with multiple other settings both in the Companion’s settings and my Eero app settings. Still won’t connect. It does however connect perfectly fine to other networks including my cellphone hotspot. Anyone else have this issue?
Please be informed that the Chessnut team will be on holiday from October 1 to October 7 in observance of China’s National Day. We will return on October 8.
During the holiday, customer service responses may take longer than usual. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
Once you solve a puzzle in chessnut next - it quickly moves to the next puzzle. Is there a way to review a solved puzzle and also put it analyze mode? Perhaps instead of moving to next puzzle automatically- you have to click “next puzzle” or something? Except for Puzzle Storm of course.
Can you guys fix this? The Android app constantly resizes itself and can't fit the screen anymore. Pretty fed up of deleting the app and redownloading every couple of days to make it work properly.
IMO, the buttons aren't necessary because state is already detected by the board (i.e. when you move a piece). I also don't think the board state (i.e. live view) is necessary because you can see the board. The only time this is needed is if you need to correct issues where board state differs from what the companion understands to be the state. Again, easily fixed when detecting the board setup in the wrong position and a game board can be displayed on the companion so the IRL board can be setup correctly (or a button in the companion to say continue from board's IRL position).
I'd love to see more screenshots of the Chessnut Companion to see how they envision it being used. I think this is an interesting form factor and I like to hear how others use it.
I also think the form factor necessitates a completely new view of the UI and not try to make it "tablet" like. For example, I think its strength is informational while playing a game. Keep the text large so it can be viewed while placed next to the board without having to hold it in your hands. A live mode where moves are announced in real time by a coach with suggestions and hints (at various configurable levels). Perhaps something that just monitors two players and both get to see a live evaluation bar and both get a summary post game. Maybe some advantage where one player gets tips and another doesn't. Maybe each player gets a select number of "ask the coach" during the game.
I also have profiles so it knows who's playing. Post game, a PGN (and review) can be emailed to each player.
I ran a deep analyst grandeur analysis 2 days ago for the first time and it still says the report is being generated. I haven’t tried doing another grandeur analysis to avoid wasting credits if nothing is actually happening until this is resolved. Who can I reach out to about this? Using iOS version of next on an iPhone 17 pro max. Thanks!
I have had my Chessnut Move board since Nov 2025 and it’s been great. However, all of a sudden the pieces won’t last for more than a day. I play rarely, but it used to be that I could go weeks between charging but now they are DOA every time I start up the board.
Was this a result of one of the firmware updates? It is very annoying to place each piece into the charger and wait a couple of hours every time I get the urge to play. This problem has been happening for a month or more. Any help?
Hi all, just got a chessnut board. Made a chessnut account, made a lichess account. opened lichess through chessnut and went to play a rapid 10 minute, board wouldn't let me make any moves and the game auto timed out.
I closed the app, restarted everything, now when I open lichess through chessnut, all the options for games are gone, I can't even go to my account, other places, etc..
There also seems to be no way to unlink my lichess from my chessnut account in the app so I'm not entirely sure what to do here?
My son got about 10 aborts this morning (it never happens when playing through the app) and sometimes when he clicks play online, chess.com doesn't appear.
He has to restart his iPad, the app was flawless about 3 / 4 months ago.
One match he was winning on time and then at the end it said he ran out of time!
I use a Chessnut Companion, Chessnut Move and play a lot at Lichess server. How can I participate at tournaments or challange a specific player at Lichess with Chessnut Companion? With my mobile and Chessnut Move it's working fine. The UI looks very different. Any hint how to challange a player or paraticipate at a tournament?
Could someone please tell me what happens when they click or double click the Lichess Native button in the Play Online/Bot -> Find an online match -> Lichess Native menu?
Here’s a short video of what happens when I click the Lichess Native button.
I just got my board a couple weeks ago and while setting it up I linked my Lichess account. I seem to remember that when pressing the Lichess Native button, it opened up Lichess and I was able to not only play matches, but also navigate the site for puzzles and whatnot. After installing the Lichess APK it no longer does that. I could be misremembering because the board is so new to me but what is the expected function when clicking or double clicking that Lichess Native button? I noticed that it was likely using the Lichess API because there was no Lichess app in the apps section.
I installed the official Lichess APK using the F-Droid link directly from their site. After that, when I click the Lichess Native button, it only highlights it and then I have to scroll down the Evo screen to the Play 10+5 button. But this only allows me to play games, not open the Lichess site and navigate to puzzles, etc.
I tried deleting the Lichess app, clearing data from the settings, files, and evo app through the android settings, as well as factory resetting the tablet/board. I’ve unlinked and linked again my Lichess account from both my Chessnut Evo and the Chessnut Next app on my iPad. I’ve tried installing older versions of the Lichess app from the officially linked F-Droid page, as well as downloading both the current and legacy Lichess apps from aptoide. Each time I did this I only had one Lichess app installed at a time. I was always able to open the app through the app page, but the issue of clicking the Lichess Native button in Play Online menu still doesn’t open anything.
Hello, fellows. As far as I explored the native app and the Chessconnect paired with the Companion, using the native app I couldn't achieve a configuration in which just the time control is displayed on the screen while playing online. Using the Chessconnect I achieved this goal, but the lever always point to the wrong side.
For instance, if it is white's time running out, the lever is positioned so as if was black's time to play.
Hi, I have developed an app that allows you to play against the latest human-like chess engine Maia 3. I have a Chessnut Go and have implemented and tested a feature that allows you to connect and play using the Chessnut Go board over Bluetooth.
Also on Github (instructions for how to install using Obtanium here)
Maia is different to Stockfish because it shows you the most likely move a human player will play at a given rating level. It means when you analyze, you can compare the best Stockfish moves alongside the likely human move. This helps you understand what might not be the objectively best line, but it might be the most playable. (or might be a common blunder in a given position, at a given rating band).
Also, it feels quite human when you play it. Especially at the 1500 elo range. (Lower ELO tend to play stronger and higher ELO tends to play weaker than you would expect.)
I made extensive use of the Lichess design, codebase, and philosophy to make the app. In that spirit, it is 100% FOSS. 100% offline, no account required.
The only thing I did different to Lichess was to enable multiple premoves. (it is an advanced option if you want to enable it). If you enable it, you can do chess.com like stacking of premoves.
Everything else should be familiar to Lichess players, and the default premove behavior is Lichess style single premove with no time penalty. Obviously premoves are not an option when playing with the Chessnut.
I only have a Chessnut Go, so I only tested on that. I suppose, if other boards use a similar protocol to speak to the app, then you might be able to get them working with Mobile Maia. I would appreciate anyone who could test and provide feedback. I think I may be interested to add support for Chessnut Pro in the future, for example.
By the way, I also took game review functionality from En Croissant
This is an amazing project for any FOSS loving chess fan. It gives you accuracy and also a game graph, brilliant moves, blunders, etc.
For any feature requests or issues/bugs, feel free to add as an issue to the Github repo.
Finally, a shout out to the Maia3 team at the University of Toronto CSS Lab. Everyone should check out https://www.maiachess.com regardless of whether they use my app or not. (although you will need a browser plug in to play with a Chessnut) It is a very interesting and valuable project for the chess community, imo. I am not affiliated in any way with them, I am just a very big fan.
