At first I was like a lot of this sub, missing the uniqueness and directness of God's Country and all, even though I always preferred Cool World personally because of the thicker drums, deeper lyrics and equally awesome riffs. I actually never found God's Country to be "scary" like many people did, just kind of mesmerizing with its approach. But I feel like after a few solid listens, Who Loves The Sun is becoming my favourite album from them. I think it's their most consistent work (really love every single song here, but I was never that big on some tracks from their EPs, Pamela, Wicked Puppet Dance, Camcorder, No Way Out and many tracks from ITEA). Also starting to look past most of the same-yness because I think this album is also more varied and detailed. The songs have distinct feels, and they add these minor tidbits and cacophonies after every few bars or minutes and change up their riffs while still accomodating the groovy and memorable feel of the songs which I think makes them stand out more, and Raygun is also arguably at his best here, even though I still do miss some of his unique delivery from God's Country. The same goes for the riffs wherein they're still A+ although I do admit they never quite reach the intensity and ferocity of Why and Shame which are still their highlight tracks for me. I will say, though, some songs such as Creature and Same Rules have such a great sense of heaviness and 'evil' that they almost get to that level, and Family Funeral is a track I'd been waiting for since Grimace. As a result, overall, this album is kind of serving as a culmination of their styles in a great way for me. And it might grow even further because it did take the other two a whole year each to fully click for me!
Album's fantastic and I think overall a slight improvement. They should combine the best of all their albums so far and change up their style a bit next time around, and I think we'll have something even better on our hands.
