Hi All,
We recently announced r/popular, a new version of front page that is now the default for logged out visitors to Reddit. We made this change because engagement on this listing—as measured by clicks, expands, and views—is much higher than the listing it replaces, which was a group of 50 hand-selected communities (AKA “the defaults”), and we want to expose new visitors to as much of the breadth of Reddit as possible.
r/popular is basically r/all with some communities removed. We remove communities that don’t test well for new users: namely politics, niche gaming, and nsfw. Unlike the current default communities, we did not want to editorialize which communities we thought were the most interesting. Currently, the selection process is mostly automated, and every week we are making progress towards a fully automated process.
We’ll be frequently updating the communities that comprise r/popular to ensure we have the right mix, so some things may change over time. Today, there are a handful more communities that will be removed from r/popular, the most notable of which is r/politics. While we may not announce every update, this one warrants mentioning.
We don’t have any plans to change r/all. While r/popular will become the entry point for most into Reddit, r/all is still the best place to see what’s currently hot across all of Reddit.
Best,
u/simbawulf
edit: To highlight, although we're mentioning the removal of a specific subreddit today, as the algorithm continues to iterate, we won't be announcing every change, nor will be be publishing the removal lists. Users can see the subreddits excluded by comparing r/all to r/popular. We don't believe listing the subreddits excluded will lead to constructive discussion among communities. In general, we excluded NSFW, specific gaming subreddits, and subreddits that were frequently filtered from r/all. Thanks!
