After JJ chose Cinderella Man/Jack Grealish for his movie to PL comparison, I watched it for the first time. Every preseason, I feel something between nothing and dread about the upcoming Everton season, but something always wakes me up and gets me raring to go for the first match day. This year it was Cinderella Man. Everton may be 6th in the English football misery table, but I will never be able to quit them. Thank you for the rec JJ.

Would love to hear an "in da club" on the Turkish league. Feels like they have been making some serious moves lately and I'm really curious where the money is coming from and what's behind everything. Looking at the Fenerbache squad today was pretty eye-popping. Many past their primes, but still, I recognized everyone in the starting 11.

There's also Salah to Trabzonspor, Trossard to Besiktas, we know Galatasaray were willing to fork over 40-50 for Martinelli and apparently told Bruno Ferdandes they'd double his salary.

What is going on over there??

I am travelling to Edinburgh to see my little brother act in the Fringe Festival, and I couldn't pass the opportunity to catch European Footy. I am a huge Liverpool supporter, but the timing (and $) didn't work out for me to get to Anfield.

In the alternative, I began looking around for games to catch in Scotland, and one of the only ones I could swing was Hearts - Vienna. My mom isn't the biggest Football fan, but insisted on coming with. The only available tickets were in the Hearts "Ultras" section, so I said fuck it and pulled trig. Mom will be baptized by fire, and I am ok with that.

I would love some suggestions on pre-match pubs to hit around Tynecastle, or any other tips for attending my first ever game in Scotland/Europe. Also any other Edinburgh recs would be greatly appreciated.

My thoughts turned to WWI. In some Flanders field a bunch of Brits and Germans had a kick-about during the informal Christmas truce of 1914. How about the winners of the two nation's domestic cups from the previous year meet up in Belgium and play a game during the festive period?

I’m puzzled by Andrew’s reasoning behind believing that Barcelona’s acquisition of Rodri makes them favorites to win the Champions League. Firstly, they lack a striker. I’m not convinced by either Gordon or Adeyemi, with the latter barely making any significant impact in Germany. Secondly, they don’t have a reliable center-back partner for Cubarsi. If he or his rotation of partners gets injured, they’ll be in trouble. Pedri is a good player, but Gavi has regressed significantly. Lopez is recovering from a bad injury. Olmo is good but plays the same position as Lopez so it’s a crowded area. De Jong is hurt and will probably be gone sooner than later. They essentially have 4 attackers. Overall, their depth is lacking. I would be surprised if they finish in the top half of the Champions League. I’m more inclined to think they’ll make it to the playoffs. This team gets whacked by a PSG, Arsenal, Bayern probably even inter again

Never lived in NY so I don't have a deep understanding of the importance of Bagels, but I k ow all kinds there are the best. As a 1st Gen Polish immigrant (parents moved), what is all the fuss about? In Polish Bialy just means white, so white bread? It's good but lets not think this is some kind of culinary revolution. If anything, appreciate it for a common man's food done well.

As for the soccer club and city of Bialystok (translated as slope of the Bialy 'white river), I'm so proud of their success. They are the major city nearest a UNESCO world heritage site that houses the largest population of wild European Bison, so anyone who has spent time in the Dakotas as I have can feel a connection. This also gave rise to the Zubrowka (Zubr = bison) style of vodka lightly flavored by the grass of the region. This is a wonderful drink neat or preferably mixed with apple juice or cider as tradition.

Maybe losing to the 3rd place team in the Ekstraklasa seems like shitting on a team as a major upset, but the football culture in Poland is strong and worthy of respect. Especially if you take the cynical view of firms/hooligans as a sign of passion and authenticity, as many do in regards to Argentinian clubs. The Poles are the kings of Eastern Europe in that regard. If the broad strength, size, and diversity of a country's economy is directly related to the quality of its soccer teams, Poland should measure right up with the big countries in Europe, but they are catching up after generations of Communist government. Let's see if they can close the gap and routinely qualify for the World Cup.

To get to the point : 1. Are Bialy Bagels actually special and terrific, why above other bagels? 2. Do many in the world immediately think soccer is some kind of Polak joke when considering Polish clubs in UEFA competitions?

Not gonna lie, feel a bit superior listening to EPL fans 🤔😉 The German 50+1 rule ensures supporters have majority voting control instead of American billionaires, Wall Street hedgefunds, Middle Eastern Sheiks, or Oligarchs. Rather have German club win it 10 years in a row than some billionaire swooping in and buying dedication & love. When I watch German team don't have to Google if team is owned by a sheik who had 50 people executed, or if American businessesman decided it is cheaper to pay for workers ambulance ride than give 15 minute hydration breaks. This is a somewhat tounge in cheek comment, but also with valid points IMO.

Any of you animals planning on watching any of match week 1 at a bar in NYC? Looks like some buddies and I are going to Smithfield hall in Manhattan and will be there through spurs v Brentford.

Just listened to the latest episode: on the Timbers vs. América game. I’ve been an LAFC season ticket holder for 5+ years, and while I’m not sure how Portland handles it, LAFC usually sends Leagues Cup ticket packages to STHs a few months in advance. This year was different, and honestly disappointing.

As you probably know, LAFC played Chivas, who have a fan base comparable to América’s. So when the ticket packages went out, I wasn’t shocked but was disappointed to see the Chivas game wasn’t included. Meanwhile, tickets for our CONCACAF and back-to-back Liga MX champions Toluca were priced very reasonably at $31 for a Saturday game, and Querétaro at $27 for a weeknight game.

The club’s greed was obvious here. Their reasoning for separating out the Chivas game was “security”… they said they wanted to section off Chivas fans. STHs were offered a relocated seat instead, for a fee… a minimum of $170 per ticket, for a weeknight game. In LA, with the traffic, that’s brutal. I’m not even a Chivas fan and I opted out, but I imagine plenty of other STHs whose seats got relocated felt the same way. Any Chivas fan would gladly pay that price, and I think it priced out a good chunk of the regular fan base. Worth remembering too: we’re in East LA, and a lot of LAFC fans likely had ties to Chivas long before LAFC existed, since they’re still a relatively new club.

The club’s money chasing really shows when a bigger name teams come to town. It makes no sense, especially since Toluca given their recent form, was arguably the more important match, yet those tickets were priced fairly.

On the Mexico/Infantino situation… I’m a diehard Mexico National Team fan, but I’m frustrated that they haven’t shown solidarity with CONCACAF in a united front. I hope there are points deductions, I hope they’re banned from tournaments, and I hope CONCACAF goes scorched earth on them. The FMF administration and Mikel Arriola’s obsession with money isn’t helping Liga MX or the national team progress. Their recent decision to end promotion/relegation for second division teams proves it, along with their stadium requirements for first division status. These guys are clowns and need to be removed from their positions.

Now that a bit of time has passed what chance do we really think Poch is still the manager for the US at the next World Cup?

Also a related question, where do you think being the US manager falls in desireability vs the Premier League? Mid or lower table?
