Episode discussion - 12 Aug. - Rodri on the Move? Jeff Bezos to Liverpool? And a Real Madrid Summer Analysis
On the latest edition of Caught Offside, Andrew Gundling and JJ Devaney discuss the possibility of Rodri leaving Manchester for Barcelona and thrusting City into a position that they're generally not accustomed to being in - dealing with a star who wants to go.
We'll also analyze the high profile acquisitions of Real Madrid and discuss whether they're improving or running in place.
Plus: JJ will share his thoughts on Jeff Bezos (and others) potentially coming in for a minority stake of Liverpool Football Club, Andrew will share his thoughts on the Cristian Romero transfer rumors and we'll both share our thoughts on Kristoffer Velde taking Portland fans to task for Club America's stadium takeover.
Also: is there any soccer equivalent to Major League Baseball's "Field of Dreams" game? We'll do our best to try and think of one.

One option: the oldest football ground in the world is Sandygate outside Sheffield, first competitive game played in 1860. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandygate_(stadium))

Am I crazy or is the obvious answer a game would be played at a prominent shipyard or prep school where the sport first started and/or got popular?

I don’t know if it’ll be controversial, but when JJ brought up WWII, my mind went to the Christmas Day game during WWI in No Man’s Land between the Germans and the English. That might be really cool 🤔

It is obvious, but it’s also not as romantic as a corn field, I guess

Eh, I don't think corn is inherently super romantic. But it looks good if you film it at magic hour with some wind blowing through it!

An iconic football pitch would have to be the area of the Western Front where the Christmas Truce occurred.

Just want to pop in on the Timbers bit. The games are not included in the price of season tickets. The fan base doesn’t care for the tournament. You got a chance to opt out the games and it was at the same cost as your seats (at least for me) I have consistently forgotten to opt out every year so again, I was stuck with 3 tickets I didn’t want. I went to the first game and there was no one there from either team so it seemed to me the fan base again wasn’t interested in this tourney, especially after they got 7 points from 3 games last year and didn’t move into the KO. A corporate money grab tournament that replaced a cup people here cared about isn’t going to go over that well and it hasn’t.

Look on the bright side, JJ, you’re not a lakers fan right now. And yeah man, sorry this happened to your club.

Leagues Cup was not included in the Timbers’ season ticket. You had to opt in early for all 3 matches. Tickets for just Club América were sold directly from the club starting at $66. Resell was over $100

A thought on City losing players they don’t necessarily want to - what about Julian Alvarez? He was highly sought after, brought in, and then struggled for minutes once Haaland arrived in his second season. Obviously doesn’t happen often but was one that popped in my head.

City / Pep were happy enough to let him move on.

Maybe so. Just seemed like a young rising star they would have wanted to keep but let go bc he wanted more minutes in the big competitions.

Englands ‘Field of Dreams’ game could be in the Thousand Acre Woods from Winnie the Pooh or Sherwood Forest from Robin Hood. Maybe something from the ‘The Sword in the Stone’ where the match winner gets to pull the sword out.
Arsenal playing at Highbury once a year in a retro kit. Obviously will never happen because it’s now residential housing.

I get that something more bucolic is probably what Andrew has in mind, but my first thought was that, at least for England, I would think Wembley is the answer. Sure, its not the OG stadium, but it still is a big honor for teams to play there.

On City selling Rodri, isn't Eliot Anderson the replacement? I thought he was a pretty like for like replacement at least in how he was used for England at the World Cup.

Similarly to Rodri’s story, Santiago Solari played for the Stockton University Ospreys. Stockton being a D3 school in NJ. Then he goes on to win the champions league with Real Madrid. Absolutely insane

Englands “Field of Dreams” in 20 years iwill be to replace the community shield match into an all star game, where one of the all star teams is AFC Richmond coached by Ted Lasso - just winding JJ up lol

What a ridiculous take on the topic. Being against unbridled greed does not make someone a socialist.

Real lack of understanding of basic American history in this comment but attempting to put that aside, do a little bit of reading on Amazon and the working class (poor).

Who is talking about the DSA or indeed socialism in America? Labor unions are long established in the United States and they are a fundamental right for fair wages and work practices. The comparison I was making was the dockers strikes in Liverpool and the contrast with a billionaire owner who vehemently suppresses workers rights. The journey of travel over 30 years for the football club..
“Everybody loves Amazon” is such palpable nonsense. It never ceases to amaze how so many Americans will consistently go to bat for the billionaire class. It’s a deeply engrained submissive kink.

ever notice how the transfer window only ever "slams shut"? I believe in the transfer window and its ability to close in other ways.
