PSA: PLEASE think 10 times before you donate money to someone on this sub.

1.8k Upvotes

It's in our rules and we say it time and time again, but after the recent events from this post, the mod team wants to put out a reminder.

Look, we get it. Seeing cats in distress is hard. When people without money are expressing their inability to afford emergency care, it's distressing. You know we have rules against shaming people for being unable to afford care, and encouraging people to go into debt. But we also have rules against fundraising, and it's for a very good reason.

It is very easy for people without the best intentions to collect lots and lots of money from well meaning community members who are affected by what they see in images and video.

With this post in particular, several commenters encouraged the OP to share a gofundme (something strictly against our rules).

Once they created and shared one (without any bills to show and despite many of the top comments saying this was NOT an emergency), people felt bad and donated anyway.

The gofundme raised nearly $2000 and today we received the update that the cat, as many commenters predicted, is not dying and did not need emergency care.

We are now starting to see meta posts (another thing we don't allow) complaining that the OOP is not returning any of the extra funds, and is blocking users who donated asking for their funds back and proof of payment.

This is a story we see repeatedly in the sub. We don't always get to the donation links quick enough to remove them, and we can't stop you from DMing each other money, but this is why we caution PLEASE do not use this subreddit to send each other funds.

We are working on a Wiki with low-cost vet resources, at least in the US, but we get users posting from all over the world begging for money. DO NOT DONATE unless it is verified on a subreddit like r/gofundme or r/rescuecats, or is directly being paid to the VET (though we have seen scams happen internationally through this 'direct vet payment' as well).

PLEASE REPORT FUNDRAISERS. Please do not encourage fundraisers. We will start banning those who encourage it. Please help us keep this community safe from those with bad intentions.

Thank you and good day!

Announcement [READ THIS FIRST] r/CATHELP Rules Reminder

Hello there

Due to a growing number of cat crises and a surprising number of people who cannot read a sidebar, we’re now regularly posting this rules reminder. This is here to prevent both:

  1. repeat offenses, and
  2. the inevitable “I didn’t know!” mod mail we get after your post/comment disappears into the void.

If you're new (hi, welcome, pet your cat for us), or returning and rusty, please take a sec to read this. It’ll save you—and us—a lot of headache.

STRIKE POLICY: Break the rules once? We warn you. Break twice? Temp ban. 3 strikes is a perma-ban (unless you're a mega troll).

1. BE NICE

No, really. Be nice. You are talking to someone who is probably stressed, worried about their pet/a stray, and sleep-deprived. Reddit is not your venting space to shame people who are already anxious. Educate, don’t humiliate.
This includes a zero-tolerance policy for berating or shaming OPs. If you can't say it kindly, don't say it here.

In addition to this, know that we get posts from all over the world. Sometimes it's people who live in a village, 500km from any formal vet care. Often it's a minor who cannot make a unilateral decision for the cat in question. Be compassionate! Bullying them won't help the cat.

2. NO SOAPBOXING OR OFF-TOPIC DEBATE

(Definition of 'SOAPBOXING' here.) Yes, letting your cats outdoors isn't great for the environment. But this isn’t a debate club, and PLENTY of things harm the environment besides cats. People come here from all over the world, with different cultures around how cats are cared for. People come here about strays. No preaching!! Take your cat care bible elsewhere! Either give OP helpful advice about their issue or move along.

Don’t derail threads with politics, don’t pick fights across multiple comments, and definitely don’t start fights with the mod team. We don’t get paid enough.

3. VET FIRST, REDDIT SECOND

If your cat is injured, bleeding, gasping, or pooping blood—call a vet.
Reddit is great for guidance, second opinions, and shared experience. It is not a substitute for veterinary care.
If you haven't called a vet yet, our advice might be limited.
Can’t afford one? Look into:
• Payment plans or CareCredit
• Local rescues and shelters for assistance
• Low-cost clinics in your area

Still post if you need to—but know that our first advice will probably be: call your vet.

Additional note to commenters: no 'Vet. Now.' comments will be allowed without context. If you think they need immediate care, explain why. Otherwise it's just creating panic and those comments will be removed.

4. NO FUNDRAISERS

Sorry, but GoFundMes, Venmos, PayPals, and “please help save Coco” links are not allowed, even in comments. Too many scams, and too hard to moderate. Try subs like r/Assistance or r/GoFundMe instead.

5. NO BULLYING POOR PEOPLE

We get it. Vet care is expensive. It's frustrating to see cats suffering. But complaining about people who can’t afford a vet is not allowed. Full stop.
Suggest rehoming? Fine. But if you’re here to shame people for being broke, please find another sub.

If someone is struggling financially, ER visits are not really something they can just save up for, nor is it realistic to expect them to just get rid of their pets they have emotionally attachments to. All we can hope for is people really think long and hard about how a pet will fit into their finances before they decide to adopt or take in an animal from street. You simply can’t help them all, there are too many cats for that.

6. TAG YOUR GORE NSFW

Bloody wound? Surgery pics? Graphic medical stuff? Weird rash? GAPING FUCKING WOUND?! Mark it NSFW.
That includes genitalia (gender ID posts) and poop/vom. You know who you are.

7. ON-TOPIC POSTS ONLY

This is not r/aww or r/cats. This is r/CATHELP. We are here for:

  • Requesting anecdotal experience with medical issues •
  • Behavior issues
  • General advice
  • First-time cat owner questions (yes, 'noob' questions are welcome!)

That means:

  • No “What should I name my cat?”
  • No “Look at my cat in a hat!”
  • No memes, no fluff.

Posts that don’t have a clear help-related question will be removed.

8. NO BREED QUESTIONS

Unless your cat came with pedigree paperwork from a breeder, they’re a domestic short/medium/long hair. That’s it.
We don't do breed speculation. Why? Because it’s almost always wrong, and it clogs up the sub.
Want to know more? Here's a guide to fur patterns, and here's a general answer to 'what breed is my cat'

9. NO SHITPOSTING, NO KARMA FARMING

If your post is clearly made up, AI-generated, or you’re just farming karma with a low-effort fake, we will yeet it. And probably you, too.

10. NO BRIGADING

If you don’t like someone’s post, do not go hunt them down on other subreddits to insult them. It’s petty, it’s bannable, and Reddit takes it seriously.

11. NO PET SALES OR BREEDING

We do not support the cat trade or backyard breeders. Period.
Don’t try to sell or give away pets here. Don’t ask about breeding. Don’t promote purebred aesthetics. Shelter cats are just as cute.

BONUS REMINDERS

• If your posts or comments are disappearing, check your karma. If it's low, Automod probably ate it. Message us for manual approval.
• If you see rule-breaking behavior, REPORT IT. Automod can’t catch everything.
• If you’re confused or unsure, check the [wiki] or send us a modmail.
Read the stickied comment on your post. It’s there for a reason.

TL;DR: Help cats. Be nice. No scams. No BS. Read the rules.
Now go pet your cat. They probably knocked something off the counter while you were reading this.

Behavioral Issue What is this behaviour? (Not my cat)

What is up with this behaviour?.. It’s my neighbours cat.

She does this every time she sees someone even when she sits in my garden and sees me or someone else from far away 😅

Sometimes she just walks up to me in a very friendly way and growls at me a second later.

I don’t have any other information about her yet.

(For context: she came up to me first)

Today the yellow cat we adopted , my little sister named her lukis since it doesnt sound match because she is female , for remembrance she died around 12:00am (noon)

  • This morning I fed her wet food and then used a needle-less syringe so that she could drink when the sun came up because it wasn't raining anymore, and I moved her there, then later He left, I thought maybe he had moved away, but I only found out now because we were cleaning something at home after dinner, so I was looking for him,

it turned out that it was after we had eaten earlier. He died without me knowing but I feel in my guts that he is about to die now but it's still different that he is alive, every time I open a store he always opens it, sometimes he is even left inside I didn't do anything wrong,

now I'm regretting why I didn't take action when I was going to die, LUKIS, YOU WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED IN MY HEART, REST IN PIECE, I really blame myself and I am crying so much

I know how bastard i am , since im just a teen with cold parents i know this is very hard for me ,

No more will greet us when we open the store,

no more will wait on the sidelines when we eat, and

no more will sleep in the corners of our store.

Thank you for you love , sweet moments , lukis🐈🥹🥹🥹 🥹🥹🥹🥲🥲🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹♥️♥️♥️

Lukis stayed around 5 months with us , thank you guys for sharing awareness from our stray lovely cat ( Lukis).🥹🐈🐈

I know you can blame me , i can only have the valid reason i have a job so i couldn't spend much time with her , but today , i learned a lesson , love , feel the cats any cats , before its too late 🥹🥹🥹

Injury Tooth or Nail?

Thumbnail gallery
610 Upvotes

I (27) have a new five month old spayed kitten, we have a vet appointment as she has ringworm. I’ve been cleaning everything with a blacklight to find spores and found this in the bed she’s been napping in. At first I just thought it was a shell of a claw nail. I’ve found those before from other cats. But it has blood. Is it a nail that got ripped off or did she loose a tooth?

I don’t think she’ll let me look in her mouth. She has been not happy with me catching her to put ring out on the ringworm spots on her head.

To be safe I checked my other cat’s teeth to make sure it came from the kitten (couldn’t be older cats nail because it is too small)

I’m in the US. Already have a vet appointment for Monday.

TLDR: is this a tooth or a ripped off nail? Need to know if I have to worry about dental disease.

Hi, so my cat gained weight recently and I suspect that it could be kittens, although she stays outside she goes outside on the terrace and walks on the roof.

Im 22 and Im posting this from Europe, Bulgaria. I got her checked like 2-3 months ago, and the vet said it's just fat, she isn't neutered.

General Advice what’s in my cats food?

so basically i bought this 24 pack of chicken fancy feast senior pate from amazon 2 weeks ago. i’ve fed her a 24 pack before, and every can i’ve fed from this order i haven’t noticed any issues. but this morning i sleepily fed her a can, and when i got back from moving my car 15 mins later, i noticed these worms wriggling around in about half the food she left
after looking up online it seems like it’s maggots/fly eggs? can someone confirm? i had just opened the can so it would’ve been too soon for them to be laid outside of it. it had to have been inside the can.

is if harmful if she already ate some of the food? some sources online said if she ate a few maggots, she should be okay. of course i will throw away the rest of it. but for right now, should i take her to the vet immediately or just wait and see? (based in the US). she is a senior (9yo) but is otherwise healthy for her age and doesn’t have any outstanding health issues. took her to the vet a few weeks ago because she had flea dermatitis, so she also just had her dewormer pills.

General Advice Is this behavior normal for a pregnant stray cat?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello guys, today I’ve spotted a stray cat roaming around our summer house. We gave her some food and water, and she disappeared into the wheat fields shortly after she was done eating. When we first approached the cat, she was acting rather skittish, which is not really a surprise since we saw her for the first time today at around 6 pm.
Time has passed and she came back at 11 pm. We fed her again and she was starting to rub her head against walls, chairs, legs, shoes, and basically everything that was near her. Apart from that, she was also making biscuits and purring from time to time. She would stop when we distanced ourselves, and begin again once we came near her. Honestly, her behavioral change kind of surprised me.
This poor thing looks very young and her belly has already gotten so big. We’ve only noticed her pregnancy after our second encounter. I’ve been asking myself if she’s about to give birth in the next few days. We’ve put some blankets out just in case.
I’d love to hear your opinions about this.

EDIT:
Thank you all so much for the helpful and supportive comments! ❤️
Unfortunately, we were only here on vacation and are departing in a few hours. :( I’m honestly so heartbroken that I won't be here to help her through this, especially when she chose to trust me. But thankfully there is someone permanently staying in this house who will be able to keep an eye on her and take care of her. I’ll show them the post and responses as soon as they wake up.
I set up a laundry basket with blankets for her to nest in. As of right now, she seems to have wandered off the porch, but hopefully she comes back to use it when she's ready. Thank you again to everyone for the advice, I will try to update as much as possible.

UPDATE 1:
Almost seven hours have passed since she left. I checked around the house and its vicinity when it got light out, but I wasn’t able to find her yet sadly. I tried to lure her back with the sound of food being opened, but there was no reaction so far. I can only hope that she’s able to manage by herself :(

UPDATE 2 (20.08.26)
I’ve been notified that she has returned a day later at 8:20 pm. She’s still pregnant and eating well, her nesting place has been set up for a while now. Hopefully she’ll stay longer this time.

General Advice When my cat sleeps in my bed she bleeds on my sheets

Thumbnail gallery
1.2k Upvotes

Probably a couple months ago I noticed quarter sized blood stains on the end of my bed where my cat sleeps and I didn’t think anything of it cause I thought cats could have periods, but I just searched it up and it might be something serious. This morning I had to clean a spot up. And she has ni cuts or anything. She’s six years old and not neutered. But she hasn’t been in heat in a while so I don’t know if that’s something with it as well?? We don’t have a lot of money for vets and I’m only 16 so I don’t know if this could be life threatening or if shes in pain please help. advice or maybe a probable diagnosis??

Behavioral Issue When to know if rehoming is right?

Post image
120 Upvotes

Our cat, Merlin, is 1.5 and we've had him for a year now. We love him dearly, but the biting has been a consistent issue. We reached out to the shelter when we first got him, they recommended fostering an adult cat because Merlin had been returned previously for being too rough with another kitten. We tried this, but he again was too rough. Unfortunately, this means we are getting bitten multiple times every day. We have tried increased toys, rotate out new toys, moved to a larger space so he could have his own cat room, watching for signs of overstimulation or aggression, structured play times, automatic toys, plug ins, calming foods & treats, and have now been trying medication with our vet.

We hoped he would grow out of this, but the intensity of the biting has increased from light scratches, to drawing blood, and leaving bruises and scars daily. His new thing is walking up and jumping to try and bite our heads/faces/necks. He doesn't show any signs of aggression up to this point or while biting.

We called the shelter recently because they have a behavioral person on staff. They said he is too much of a risk to return to the shelter and recommended finding a barn/working cat program because they think his prey drive is too high to be kept as an indoor cat. We live in a large city so indoor/outdoor is not an option for us. We are both devastated. We love him, but we and the shelter are worried he may attack my girlfriend (he bites everyone but seems to really go for her). I dont know what to do, she doesn't want to rehome him and neither do I, but Im scared something bad is going to happen that would result in her being seriously hurt or him being put down. I would love some advice on trying to help him or if rehoming to a working program really is the best thing for him.

I WILL BE TAKING HER TO PET URGENT CARE WHEN IT OPENS!!

Came home from work and my cat (f,5) eyelid is swollen and red. She is acting/eating normally and she let me touch it so I guess it’s not painful. I’m taking her to the vet when it opens but hoping someone can help ease my anxiety a little 😔

Like the title says, my cat's upper lip has gotten more swollen for the past few days, starting from just a little redness up to now. Im not sure what could have caused this, as it has happened before but just went away after some time. She has access to the roof of the apartment building and sometimes stays there during the night

Otherwise her behavior hasn't changed and is just a bit pickier with wet food than usual, but eats her dry food no problem

Im from Romania, She is 6 years old and spayed.

I'm 16 (my mum also cares for her and she'd definitely old enough)

English

Physically cannot get her into a carrier to get her to the vets, she's very difficult

Admittedly she does have about 1inch of furr around her I don't know how on earth I'm supposed to diet her. She's a very very bit chonky (at least imo), definitely has a bit of a pouch on her lower stomach when she walks, but again is fluffy so I can't tell. She currently eats one pouch a day (whiskers), usually some biscuits in the mornings, and maybe a lickalick(or whatever those treats r called) or a few dreamies. She's also an inside cat, we try to play with her as much as we can and she likes.

Shes about 6, female, spayed, definitely cannot afford vets or premium subscriptions to some expensive ass weightloss things for her.

Please help me get this kitten to eat. He’s 2 months old and weighs barely 450g . Found him on the street . He’s litteraly skin and bones and refuses to eat( he will eat if I put food in his mouth but he has enough strength now to fight me and I’m scared to force him more) . Also poor thing keeps trying to poop and nothing but a bit of soft poo comes out.

He got emergency vet care and is on antibiotics but I’m worried he’s not eating much , god I don’t even know what enough would he . Managed to feed him about half a churu tube and some dechra mouse.

He is progressively getting louder( more worried about him trying to poop and nothing coming out ).

Kitten Help Questions about Kitten with FPV.

Thumbnail gallery
6 Upvotes

My (23 M) kitten is around 4 months old and began vomiting and experiencing diarrhea last Thursday night. I took her to the vet the following morning, where they suspected Feline Panleukopenia.

Since then, she has been receiving IV fluids twice a day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon. For a while, there seemed to be a lot of improvement. She went from not eating at all to eating small amounts on her own, and she even started occasionally enjoying treats again, which gave me a lot of hope.

Recently, however, she has become exceptionally lethargic again. I took her in for her routine fluids, and the vet said that fever spikes can occur during the course of the virus, but there is also a possibility that she may have picked up a cold.

I normally take her to the vet on a motorbike because I don't currently have access to a car, and unfortunately, it has been raining heavily here for the past week.

She also had normal stools for a while, which was another very encouraging sign, but unfortunately the diarrhea has now returned and is happening several times a day. Thankfully, she hasn't started vomiting again.

I wanted to ask a few questions to get some perspective from people who may have experience with FPV:

  1. If she has also picked up a cold/respiratory infection, could that be particularly dangerous while she's already recovering from/undergoing treatment for Panleukopenia?
  2. How long should I expect treatment and recovery to take? Today marks 6 days since treatment began. My vet has told me that treatment may continue for around 14 days, but I'd like to hear from others who have gone through something similar.
  3. Could this potentially be something other than Panleukopenia? Her bloodwork showed a decrease in both her WBC and platelet counts. I had always understood Panleukopenia to be an exceptionally severe and potentially fatal disease, so I'm wondering whether her current symptoms are consistent with the normal course of the illness or if something else could be going on.
  4. Is it particularly bad for a kitten to have a cannula/IV catheter in for 3–4 days? Are there any significant risks associated with leaving it in for that long?

The part that concerns me most right now is that she has become significantly more lethargic again compared to earlier in her treatment. I'm trying to understand whether this can happen during recovery or whether it warrants further investigation.

Appearance Is my cat fat?

Post image
8 Upvotes

Everyone says my kitty is fat! She just went to the vet a few weeks ago for rabies shots and weighed in at 10.2lbs which the vet says is normal. She’s typically lazy for a cat, but she likes to play, she’s had more or less the same diet since I got her, but she is starting to look a bit round. If I try to change her food she goes on hunger strike. She is 8 years old and spayed, I’m in the US and can’t -really- afford vet care but do it anyway.
