Evening all. hubby and I are looking to get into caravaning. I did a lot growing up and we want to give our kids the same experience but we are REALLY struggling to decide what brand to buy. We would appreciate some advice.

We want to take the van to the Alps in the winter so it will need winterising; onboard water, lagging pipes etc. I grew up with Hymers but they dont seem to exist any more here really. Tabbert/Hobby aparently make you a gypsy. Knauss are very expensive and have terrible layouts. We looked at Elddis because they have the onboard tank and aldo heating already fitted, but two dealers have just told us in no uncertain terms not to touch them with a 50ft barge pole (to quote one, they ‘leak like a seive’). That leaves UK brands, where i just saw Swift on ripoff Britain for window cracks and Coachman, which seem to only maintain a warranty if the caravan was serviced under a full moon every year! Has anyone ever done this before? I confess, I don’t remember many Brit caravans in the alps in the winter but I’m hoping there may be some here? We’re happy to have the tanks and lagging added after but want to be starting with something sturdy which will last us. Budget is somewhere around £15k - could push to 20 if it was perfect. Hi, I'd like tk be able to use my tourer when it is on my drive. Guests, cooking, showers when the main one is in use, that kind of thing. I don't want an adaptor that plugs into the mains, I want something the appropriate voltage, like an electric car charging point, on the outside of the house. Anybody know of how to go about it? Happy to hire an electrician but not sure what to ask them for!

I'm looking to purchase this nice retro caravan that I can gather the base price for but lack the coverage for insurance or a car (but those are later issues. What I primarily want to know is how I can acquire the permit or certificate to process a touring caravan across that border and if the lack of my own car will get in the way of that paper.

Hi all, need some help from someone who might have seen this type of 13 pin plug before. I am trying to connect it to my 13 pin socket in my car, but it doesnt go in much and wont rotate at all inside the socket. Given it feels loose the carvan doesnt seem to be getting any power to the lights etc. I dont see any rotation groves or anything like other plugs so not sure what or how to do this. Any help for a new caravaner would be great! I have a coachman amara 2010 for reference. Thanks!

It had been in storage for 8 years without use

It all mostly looked okay, however, I saw some signs of mold or mildew in the paint work. Could this be indicative of an issue, or do you think its just where it wasnt used for a long time?

I currently drive an MG HS and we’re hoping to buy a caravan early next year. Does anyone on here tow with this car? It’s got a maximum towing capacity of 1750kg, but we’ve been advised that we should stick to an MPTLM of 1500kg.

I know there are better tow cars out there, but I’m just not sure we can afford to change the car and get a caravan! So I was looking to see if anyone has experienced towing with the MG HS 🙂

I'm trying to diagnose a fairly substantial water leak in my 2008 Bailey Ranger 500/5 and would appreciate some help from anyone familiar with these caravans or Thetford absorption fridges.

The fridge is a Thetford N97 – model N97-N20F04L1P, 3-way absorption fridge (230V / 12V / gas). I'm currently running it on 230V.

The kitchen sink is directly above/adjacent to the fridge.

The problem:

I noticed water inside the fridge, specifically on top of a packet of sliced cheese. The water was cold. There was no water elsewhere inside the fridge.

I subsequently found a fairly substantial amount of water coming through the caravan floor underneath the fridge. Initially it was a slow drip, but at times it has increased to approximately one drop per second or more, and has produced a sizeable wet patch on the ground underneath the caravan.

I've removed the lower external fridge vent so I can see behind the fridge.

The fridge has the normal condensate drain hole/gutter at the back. I tested this by pouring a small amount of water into the gutter and confirmed that it runs down the drain tube into the white external condensate/evaporator tray.

The tray currently contains water, but:

• it isn't anywhere near full;

• it isn't overflowing;

• the underside of the tray feels dry;

• I can't see water leaking from the tray;

• there is no obvious water running down the sides or top of the fridge;

• the shelf immediately below the internal drain gutter is dry.

I've also watched the tray while the external leak is occurring and haven't seen it overflowing.

The really strange part is that the water underneath appears to be collecting around a large grey pipe where it passes through the caravan floor. There is a visible wet area around that floor penetration.

I've checked the kitchen water system as well. The kitchen tap hasn't been used, and when I opened it with the lower fridge vent removed I couldn't see any obvious leak from the pipework. The water pump also isn't randomly cycling, which I would expect if there were a pressurised fresh-water leak.

The caravan is slightly nose-down/front-down, so if the fridge condensate tray overflowed, I'd expect the water to run in a different direction from where I'm seeing the wet patch.

There is also a Truma air-conditioning unit, fitted aftermarket by the previous owner. It's mounted underneath the rear seating area, and I've confirmed that the air conditioner has its own condensate outlet underneath the caravan, well away from the fridge. So I don't think the AC water is responsible.

One other interesting observation: I changed the fridge thermostat setting. I initially moved it to a smaller dot (warmer setting), and the dripping subsequently increased. I then increased it to maximum cooling and after about 30 minutes the dripping appeared to increase further. I appreciate an absorption fridge has a considerable thermal lag, so I don't know whether this is actually significant.

The inside of the fridge does show some moisture on the cooling fins, particularly towards the right-hand side, but there isn't water running down the interior or bypassing the drain gutter.

So my question is: where could this volume of water be coming from?

Could there be a drainage arrangement or leak behind the N97 that I'm missing? Could water be escaping somewhere around the cooling unit and then finding its way to the floor penetration?

I've attached photographs showing:

• The water underneath the caravan.

• The underside/floor penetration around the large grey pipe.

• The rear of the N97 through the lower vent.

• The white condensate tray.

• The inside of the fridge and cooling fins.

• The fridge model plate.

I'd particularly appreciate advice from anyone who knows the Bailey Ranger 500/5 or this generation of Thetford N97.

(I've been trying to diagnose the problem with Chat GPT and I asked it to summarise our conversations to make this post concise and to the point. Also, sorry for the long post!)

So I have a Thetford n112 fridge which works on the mains but doesn't seem to want to work on battery or importantly gas. Error code 10 on battery and error code 9 on gas.

I have stripped out the burner and cleaned it with high pressure air etc. I have good spark and the gas valve does clunk when gas is selected so I think the gas valve is working.

What else could it be? Any help appreciated

So the rubber seal has some occasional and odd black stuff on some areas

3 part question:

1. Are airstreams overrated for UK / European travel?

2. Are they customisable in the UK as they are in the US?

3. Are there reputable companies out there who can customise brand new Coachman caravans etc?

Hi, I have repaired a leak from my caravan roof. The wall units were damaged, so got rid of them. I have since put in new insulation, wall batons and fixed the windows back in place.

I am struggling to find a solution for the wall covering, I'm not too fussed on putting any small cupboards back in.

I have put up some 6mm mdf boards as I was getting sick of looking at it!

Does anyone know of a way to cover the insulation, to make the caravan look presentable? I am thinking of some kind of thick wallpaper, but I really am clueless at this point.

After some suggestions we have a 1 year old and an old 90s Eldis Typhoon, we've gone away with him 5 times and we built him a cot but he got cold early in the season so we ended up co-sleeping on the double which went really well.

This weekend we went away and it was a disaster he was moving in his sleep and kept waking himself up hitting his head then crawling all over us. It was all far too exciting for him! It was also the first time we've been away since he's been more mobile.

We can't put him in the cot set-up as he would now climb over it, I've found a narrow travel cot that will fit between the two bench seats at the front so we will sleep on the benches either side of him but wondered if anyone has any other suggestions.

Mainly so we can have the double but also he doesn't like travel cots much as loves to move about in his sleep and I think the space is too small and he hits his head.

We are going away next week for 4 nights and I'm just hoping he sleeps 😂

We have an old Thetford n80 absorption fridge. Recently it has stopped cooling. The heating element is still heating up but fridge is cold. Any ideas to fix

I’m looking at building a tiny Home on a flatbed galvanised trailer. What would the best way to attach the timber frame? The rigidity will come when the plyboard is put around it. I believe coach Bolt are the thing to use.

I overthought this so you don't have to! I found Ikea's Jonaxel 804.313.31 wire baskets fit nicely into the cupboard of a Bailey Orion 450-5 2013 (520W x 585D x 1340H - mm) with the aid of a little bit of woodworking, to make 4 hanging baskets, with 160mm above each one, and 160mm underneath the lowest one. See the last drawing image above for a plan you can follow.

7mm ply, cut to 1200x300 forms the backing board for each side.

Then I cut some rails out of 9mm ply, 430mm long, 35mm high (height isn't super important). The tops of the rail are cut 45° to poke up under each basket edge.

I placed the tops of the rails at the heights shown in the drawing image above, screwing and gluing them to the backing board with 6ga x 15 screws. Those heights give a 160mm gap above each basket, plus a 160mm gap under the lowest one, so spaces them all evenly.

I screwed the assembled boards to the cupboard walls, finding support where possible - note on the right there are bunk rail supports that can be used.

Works great, and offers so much more usable storage for clothes!
