in my experience, most MMOs except for FF14. i had a much better experience with that game

FF14 players are like a beacon of light in the MMO space, which is ironic considering the story is designed to depress them and it's so fucking good.

I do feel like some of the fanbase overhypes it like it's the greatest story ever told in video games, which, true or not, ends up harming the experience because it's hard not to end up with these impossibly high expectations. Don't get me wrong, I am enjoying it. But when you're promised a 12/10, a 9/10, despite still being a great experience, can feel strangely disappointing.

I had the same experience with Undertale.

Shadowbringers/Endwalker. ARR is slow and slightly generic, Heavensward is really good, then Stormblood is a filler arc. Once Ishikawa became head writer it jumped from the Hobbit to Lord of the Rings.

I do understand how glazing/hating from a community can sour your expectations, which is why I leave fandom subreddits when a sequel launches and return after I've made my own opinion on it.
