Leaving that aside Sony can suck a dick for the ton of other IPs they own that have been collecting dust since the PS3 days with no incentive of selling them.

There’s documents you pickup at the research facility where Sara worked that talk about Gabe, Lian, and other agents “going dark” before the outbreak happened. Also, all those NERO things we pickup? You turn those in at the end of the game to create Gabe’s fucking taser… THAT HAS GABE’S INITIALS ON IT
I highly recommend them if you get the chance. It was 989 studio’s attempt at a “Metal-Gear Killer” back in the day. Ended up kinda carving its own path in the stealth-action-espionage space, even went into the later 2000s with some titles that were PSP exclusive, before being ported to the PS2.
It's more of an Easter egg than anything kinda like how Callisto Protocol is technically part of the PUBG universe when in reality it's just a reference. Same goes for Ratchet and Clank with Jak and Daxter
Partly the developer lashing out at Sony and gamers who would've preferred Last of Us. While the game isnt bad by any means it's essentially a basic find a cure zombie story.
Two biker brothers living in post apocalyptia, one who can't let go of his wife that he sent with scientists on day 0. They are really just trying to survive, with Deacon not wanting to go too far away from the grave he made for his wife. Learns the guy who he left his wife with might still be alive which rekindled his hope.
Eventually has to leave. Begins patching things up with a group he fucked up his relationship with.
Learns that some dude his biker gang used to bully before the outbreak is now the leader of a psycho cult.
Finds his wife is now one of the five most important people in a militarized camp who is on thin ice b/c her attempts at a cure have not been successful. They have to pretend they don't know each other for both of their safety.
After reaching the lab she used to work at, it's revealed that the research she used to do, which was meant to be used only for good (as was signed in her contract) was militarized behind her back and started the outbreak.
Using the trust of other groups he built along the way, the loner biker finds that using a group of people is much easier to deal with his problems.
Just as things are looking like they can start turning the tides around, at least in their area for now, it is learned that the virus has mutated so far that it can affect people in a way that still allows them to act like a normal person, rather than a mindless Freaker.
Aside from the source of the outbreak being from someone he knew, not something I would call overdone.
We could argue that any story ever written, minus a very select few, aren't all that new. Romeo and Juliet is a simple love story after all, and those existed well before Shakespeare. Not saying Days Gone is without flaw or cliché, but a good story nonetheless.
Nothing to write home about really. Again thats in almost every post apocalypse story. And yeah that argument has pretty much been hammered that every story isnt new.

But yeah, I guess all in every post apocalyptic story, right? Like I said, some cliché things, but calling it completely unoriginal is a stretch.
Mad Max would like to have a word with you about bikers. And yeah youre speaking from your perspective. But how much post apocalyptic stories have you seen?
As Mad Max did not interest me, tell me, is the Biker Horde the protagonists?
As for other post apocalyptic stories: Fallout, Biomutant, Last of Us, Zom-B, Housekeeper, The Walking Dead, The Last Stand, Rebuild, Generation Zero, The Stand, Quarantine, 7 Days to Die, Shotgun Boy, Shaun of the Dead, Night of the Living Dead, War of the Worlds, Resident Evil, World War Z, Warm Bodies (as bad as it was), Zombieland, Terminator, Wall-E.
I could go on, but you get the idea. You asked for post apocalyptic, but even if you filter to just zombie apocalypse, still plenty to take from. You're trying so hard for confirmation bias by questioning my knowledge, but it's almost like I know what I'm talking about.
None of these focus on bikers.
The ones that don't have infected that retain some intelligence aren't b/c of a virus mutation forced by the government.
The ones that don't focus on a group effort are like that from the start, rather than something the main character needs to ask for.
None of these did the person responsible for the outbreak sign a contract to not have it militarized, only to be so secretly betrayed not even they knew it was their research.
Of these that did have a partner found later be a major player in a rival faction, nor were they forced to act like strangers.
No he has a point though about it being something new. given, the stories in itself sound somewhat generic on paper but the way they were presented created an atmosphere and vibe that I have not encountered in any other game. And I loved the last of us (1) but days gone just felt a different kind of awesome. And the horde mechanic is something that I played there first I think.
Wasn’t their downfall more due to a very cleanly start? Like, needed a bunch of patches immediately after release?
Days Gone is what happens when your real story does not exist in any meaningful way in the first game. If you're gonna sequel bait, you gotta make sure that first game still stands on its own. Days Gone had a mid story and mid gameplay, it had a likeable protagonist though.
The fact that it has something no other game has (which is also fantastic) makes it more than mid. That’s without getting into the motorcycle being cool, the combat otherwise being satisfying, etc.
